Too Honest for the White House.......2006-11-10
I met Jimmy Carter in 1991, when he and I were in Zambia at the same time. It is hard to meet a former US Presdient, and ironic to meet him in Africa. I was resident in Kenya at that time, working as a linguist designing language and culture training programs for foreigners coming to work with Christian churches.
I happened to be visiting in Zambia at that time investigating local resources for organizing a language programs for the language of the Lozi people, who live along the Zambezi River in Zambia and surrounding countries. Jimmy was there with staff from his Carter Foundation monitoring the elections of the country for a transition to democracy after a long period under the first president, really a dictator, Kenneth Kaunda.
I was invited to attend a meeting of American missionaries he was scheduled to address. He was a wonderfully unpretentious and personable person, a real person meeting other real persons. He spoke formally and then informally at a general reception with us. After the meeting with the gorup, I had a further opportunity to visit with Jimmy personally. I joined the leader of the mission group that had arranged the meeting to talk informally with President Carter as he sat in the open door of his van, while waiting for the final security checks to be finished by his Secret Service officers before his departure.
In this book Jimmy Carter presents his experiences and memories of his one term in office as President of the United States. He expresses himself in the same personal, unpretentious and humble style he exhibited when speaking to us in person. He writes in an honest and confessional style to present his experiences. He writes not in terms of a catalogue of events, but in personal terms of his thoughts and feelings as the events unfolded.
He starts off with the Iran hostage affair, which was not finally resolved until a few minutes after he had already relinquished his office to Ronald Reagan at the January 20 swearing-in ceremony. It was clear to us who observed this sad situation from an overseas view that the Iranian Revolutionary government had conducted this affair over the last year of the Carter Presidency primarily to undermine the US, but specifically as a slap at President Carter.
This in itself is ironic, because the general reaction to President Carter from overseas, and epecially the "Third World," was that now we had a US president who could be trusted, who tried to meet the rest of the world on its own terms, and who wanted to do what was best for the whole world community -- to do what was right.
Carter expresses the same disappointed concept of the Iran hostage affair. Perhaps the Revolutionary government of Iran had already been given some word from the Reagan Republican campaign that they would get a special under-the-table deal on arms if Carter were defeated. Who knows why they thougth this was the right approach towards America and its conciliatory president?
In this book Carter reveals his approach to personal and international affairs. He wanted to be honest, consistent in his moral consideration for both private and public responsibilities and decisions. This approach to life and relationships was proven in the unprecedented success and acclaim he has been awarded in his post-presidential activities of international diplomacy, peacemaking and counseling to many governments, heads of state and the whole international community. These accomplishments and contributions far outstrip beyond what he do with the restrictions and political hobbles inherent in the jealousies of Washington.
Washington, and indeed much of the country at large, could not understand a leader who never hid his sincere, honest and consistent desire to be a moral person as the leader of the nation. They could not understand the approach that decisions were made on the basis of universal principles of right and wrong, not political advantage.
This book is inspiring, informative, endearing and challenging in its presenting of a goal of personal integrity in all aspects of life, expressed by this great man.
Great book by a great man.......2002-05-24
Growing up in the 1990s, I was never familiar with President Carter or his specific policies. This book gives a very thorough and honest review of the major policy issues confronting President Carter in the late 1970s. If you think his presidency was a failure, you should at least take time to read about why he acted the way he did. He explains the seemingly endless energy debate in great detail and also what led him to give his infamous "crisis of confidence" speech. He gives a practically minute-by-minute account of the hostage crisis and how he worked (successfully) to win their release without nuclear weaponry or massive bloodshed. His coverage of the 1980 election was somewhat superficial so I suggest those interested in that election look elsewhere. If you are a die-hard Republican intent on bashing President Carter, this book is not for you, but if you are sincerely interested in knowing more about the Carter administration, then by all means buy it. Carter does try to justify his actions, but what presidential memoir doesn't? This is a great book that some of the other reviewers seem not to have read.
Embarassingly terrible..........2002-02-13
I am one of those people that has to finish a book once I begin, whether it's great or terrible. I wished I wasn't after the first page of President Carter's memoirs.
My opinion of Jimmy Carter as a President aside, this book is an exhaustively boring collection of boring anecdotes, embarassing international incidents, and cowardly Presidential acts and statements. I'm too young to remember the Carter Presidency in any detail, but I can only imagine how truly miserable a time that must have been for our nation with the author of these memoirs at the helm.
I've read many Presidential memoirs and autobiographies, particularly those of the last half century. Interestingly enough, I'd skipped right over Carter's, jumping from Ford to Reagan without much concern. The historical void that doing so created left me feeling better off than having now read "Keeping Faith." No other work authored by a president or past president has left me feeling more insecure at the thought of that man having been the most powerful in the world for a time.
A good man but a bad president.......2001-01-27
Jimmy Carter is like Herbert Hoover in more ways than one. Hoover's memoirs are among the most lucid and insightful that any president has ever written. So are Carter's. Hoover was one of the most intelligent presidents we've ever had. So was Carter. Hoover translated Christian charity into concrete action all his life. So has Carter. But Hoover's presidency was one of the century's worst. Regrettably, so was Carter's.
The Camp David Accords and the Panama Canal Treaties were his only notable successes. These were grievously outweighed by his failures -- double-digit inflation, double-digit interest rates, the ill-considered "crisis of confidence" speech, the fall of Nicaragua to the Sandinistas, and the fall of Iran to medievalist radicals. On this last point, Carter's refusal to let the Shah come to the US to die was motivated by a desire not to offend the Islamic militants who hated him. (Don't take my word for it; read Carter's own explanation in "Keeping Faith.") For all Carter's moral courage, this episode is one of the most despicable examples of moral cowardice in the history of the presidency.
The message of American weakness was not lost on the rest of the world. Our allies in Europe, doubting America's commitment to them, proposed to base intermediate-range nuclear missiles on their own territory, which led to so much danger in ensuing years. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan. And the Iranians seized the US embassy and held the hostages for 444 days. That they were released at the very moment of Reagan's inauguration was no coincidence.
Carter's book is not very candid. It lays much heavier emphasis on the few successes than on the areas of weakness and failure, and has a flavor of rationalization and self-justification. And his discussion of his meetings with Reagan during the transition after the election of 1980 is bitter and petty.
If he could rewrite his memoirs today, I suspect Carter would do it differently. His life since then has been so exemplary that he no longer needs to worry about history's judgment of his failed presidency. For that judgment will be eclipsed by history's judgment of him as a man.
Well Written - Insightful.......1999-11-23
Jimmy Carter was a unique individual among recent US Presidents. In the wake of Watergate a man unknown outside of Georgia stunned the pundits by taking both the Democratic Nomination and the Presidency. He brought to the Oval Office a habit he shared with two of his 20th century predecessors, Nixon and Truman - that of writing dailiy entries in a diary. This he maintained, thankfully, throughout his presidency. It is from these entries that his memoirs are constructed.
The book is refreshingly open and honest abount the man's objectives, triumphs, mistakes and regrets. The problems that Jimmy Carter faced in the White House were tremendous. His solutions were thoughtful and long term. Thus we are left with the perception that Carter was a failure. He did fail in making Americans feel good, and he failed in the image game. He never came across well on television and came across preachy.
Had Ford won in '76 he too would have faced the same crises, and, perhaps would have managed them as well as did Carter. Ford would have done so with a Washington savy that smacked of competence. Carter won essentially because he lacked such Washington savy - I honestly believe he lost in '80 for the same reason. The This book succeeds where President Carter failed - in communicating his ideas.
Ironically, The Great Communicator's book fails where Reagan was most successful. 'Keeping Faith' is well written and worth the reading - this cannot be said of Mr. Reagan's memoirs 'An American Life'.

De Vinck's true account of his severely handicapped brother's life is a powerful, inspirational statement on the value of life.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful testimony to the power of love.......2007-10-10
The Power of the Powerless is a beautiful testimony to the power of love. It includes true stories of four individuals whom society would consider to be disabled and shows how they brought growth and joy to their families and others. The book is a reminder that we ought not judge the worth of others by how much they can do, but rather by how much they can cause us to grow. We are the ones who benefit from the power of the powerless.
My Powerful Powerless.......2007-06-18
My daughter is Special Needs and this book is so heart warming. It is always a pleasure to read that other people see the love and joy that I find in my daughter's eyes in others. If you are just looking to open your eyes to the Special Needs community this is a great start. Happy Reading!!
I found myself in the Power of the Powerless.......2006-07-08
I was 6 months pregnant with my first child when I received a prenatal diagnosis of a potentially fatal and severe brain malformation for my unborn son. On the slim chance that he would be born alive, I was warned that he would have severe cognitive impairments, would never walk, and would never talk.
Within a week following that diagnosis, I was given "The Power of the Powerless" by the father of a five year old child living with the same diagnosis as my unborn son. The story of Oliver and Christopher de Vinck helped me to find hope for my child and the deep impact that he would have on my life, and the lives of others.
My son is now 3 years old, and all of those warnings from my doctor came true. My dear son cannot walk or talk, and he is severely impaired; however, just like Oliver, he is touching lives, stirring emotions, and bringing meaning to the lives of those who are willing to see the power of the powerless.
The value of suffering.......2005-12-21
To me this is a story about the value of suffering. I wish I could have given this book four and half stars. It is truly a beautiful book with many profound statements, and I will read it again. Christopher De Vink is not shy about sharing the presence of his Catholic faith in his life with Oliver. That being so, I kept hoping Mr. De Vink would use the long standing teachings of the Catholic Church on the value of suffering to make his point. Instead, the author only skirts around theological arguments (Catholic or otherwise)that I think would have made the book more solid. For those who have made their peace with suffering through a theological understanding of its value, this will be a beautiful book that will affirm their faith. For those who have learned to embrace suffering through experience, this book will be encouraging to say the least. But for those who insist on avoiding suffering at any cost, this book will be eye opening, life changing and, frankly, necessary.
if only there were more than 5 stars..........2005-05-14
Honestly, this is the best book I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It sent me through a whirlwind of emotion, discovery, and affirmation. I cried through the whole book, sobbed even. The messages of human value, compassion, love, and hope are so inspiring and real. Each story is artfully tied into de Vinck's goal of writing about life and purpose. This is a book for everyone. I couldn't recommend a book more strongly than this one. It's astonishing really, pain is part of the process.

Great Quilting Technique & Book.......2007-09-08
I have never made a quilt before but I used the 2-for-1 design to make 2 twin size quilts for my grandsons. I modified the front side w/ my own design & used the author's design for reverse side. It took me 8+ weeks to complete 2 beautiful quilts that totally impressed everyone. The book is well written w/ clear & easy instructions. I am already planning my 3rd quilt. The only fault I found w/ this book was the number of projects--I would've liked even more inspiration. I also bought this author's followup book -- More Reversible Quilts. I highly recommend these books.
quilt book review .......2007-07-07
Book arrived...good service. It was what I was searching for. Lots of new ideas for me. PS...Amazon provides a great service. Thank you.
Easy and very quick.......2007-04-08
I found the details well written and easy to understand if you have knowledge of rotary cutting and machine piecing. If the quilter has no knowledge I would suggest using scrap fabric and not their best craft fabric. The tips given are worth following no matter the quilters skill level. The projects could be cut down in size especially for a beginner.
Great person to deal with.......2007-03-12
Very happy with the book I received so quickly. Was happy when I looked at the book and it was new.
A clear helpful quide to the reversible quilt........2007-03-09
This book is very useful. It provides helpful hints, as well as clear and easy to follow insructions with illustrations. It also has beautiful completed quilts to look at to provide inspiration. Because it is so clearly written, it would be suitable for novice quilters as well as those with quilting experience who want to try a reversible quilt. I have just completed a quilt using it and would thoroughly recommend it.

Book Description
"How To Manage Your Child's Life-Threatening Food Allergies: Practical Tips For Everyday Life" provides the step-by-step information you need to create a safe and enjoyable home, school and social life for your food-allergic child. The book includes hundreds of easy-to-read tips and numerous real-life examples, checklists and sample forms.
You'll learn the nitty-gritty details of how to handle common situations, and be warned of potential dangers you may not have considered. The book answers all of your questions, including: How do you determine which foods are "safe" for your child and which are not? How do you teach others about your child's allergies? How do you turn your home into a "safe haven"? What do you need to know to create a safe school and day care environment? How do you handle children's birthday parties, family get-togethers, guests in your home, etc.? How do you safely travel? Or go to a restaurant? What potential hazards are lurking at the playground, the movie theater or your child's best friend's living room? What about sports, camp, Scouts and other extracurricular activities?
For those who live outside the U.S. - or are planning to travel outside the U.S. - the book also includes information particular to food allergy management in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Easily identifiable "International Perspective" tables with country-specific information are found throughout the book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent - even for moms experienced with food allergies.......2007-09-19
I've been living with a severely food allergic child (milk, eggs, nuts, soy) for eight years, and have subscribed to the FAN newsletter all that time, so I am hardly a newbie when it comes to food allergies. And I just LOVE this book. I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of completely practical information it contained. She has excellent ideas for traveling with a food allergic child. Her recommendations about making your home a safe zone and letting your child play at other homes are spot on. Her comments about school and outings are great. She doesn't miss a thing. And I gained lots of ideas, like having a separate section of the freezer for "Becca-safe" foods, that are making my life easier.
I love her tone, too. She is clear and easy to understand. She is so realistic, and so calm, "Don't expect too much from other people" is so true, because even well-intentioned people just make mistakes. Unfortunately, you always have to be on guard.
One option she did NOT mention regarding school lunches is for your child to sit at a tray table placed at the end of the cafeteria table. This is what my child is doing, plus they do not let children drinking milk or eating yougurt or "spillable" dairy products sit near her. So far, this has worked well for our daughter.
My daughter is now eight, and she is starting to seem depressed about her food allergies, and I would have loved more information about how to help her deal with the emotional aspects of food allergies. And perhaps more information about what to expect when she reaches puberty, the age when some kids start to be rebellious and to take risks. Although, the author was writing from personal experience and her son outgrew his dairy allergy at age 11.5 (so there is hope yet, dear Becca), so perhaps that is why the book ends where it does.
Anyway, this is the number one book I will recommend to parents of children who are newly diagnosed with food allergies - and even those who have been dealing with it for a while but want some new ideas or advice about specific problems.
Best Advice for Mothers of Food Allergic children.......2007-08-08
Of all the allergy books I have read, yours is the only one that advised us as a Mom! So many tips and information that are so very important, but not so obvious. I am delighted to tell you we have had a safe, accidental exposure-free experience thus far with my son's life threatening allergies, and I feel this book is the main reason. My allergist is great, but he doesn't give all the day to day hints and information you have provided. Thank you for your book!
Scary but informative.......2007-05-10
The book does provide some good information and some other things to consider as you deal with your child's allergies. However, I do find that it tends to a bit extremist in some cases.
Great resource.......2007-03-11
Very helpful tips for someone that has just had a child diagnosed with allergies.
Not just for the parents.......2007-01-20
This book should be purchased by every parent who lives with a severely food allergic child, that is a given. What Linda Coss's title doesn't tell us, is that her book is a must read for any friend, teacher, family member, or caregiver who may also be in contact with their child.
This may seem like a tall order, but this book is actually quite interesting to read. The chapters are to the point. Linda Coss addresses every detail from how to use an EpiPen to grocery shopping and "play dates." Plus, to really send the message home, she includes stories and testimonials from dozens of parents throughout. These are fascinating eye-openers. Parents share their troubles and triumphs in dealing with their child's allergies and with the public. Any disbelievers will quickly be quieted when they realize the lengths that these parents must go to. The stories also provide some common ground and real world examples for parents of food allergic children.
It is essential for anyone who spends time with a food allergic child to understand how to create a safe environment and how to handle an emergency. Linda Coss's book frankly and thoroughly addresses the subject, and is certainly the best introduction to child food allergies that I have ever come across.

I have read Yelena Khangaýs story several times in the past several years. Leaning something different each time that I read it. Her wit and her humor are outstanding given the time she was writing about. It was a time of great history for both nations as well as both cultures. She looks through the eyes of an individual of great wonder. A person ho looks around and sees a world change. Meeting her new ýfamilyý that under given circumstances would have been the enemy was a great delight to read.
I encourage her to write a sequel to the book. I hope to meet her one day. Sit down in a café and drink Chi.
A story that would have much interest to anyone........1997-12-17
Really learned a lot about a subject that I knew nothing about. All history is family history. A fascinating story that puts you inside a Russia we never hear about.
