Book Description
Ghana is a vibrant and alluring country, steeped in a rich tradition and a frequently tragic history. Free from the trappings of mass tourism, this former British colony has much to offer the visitor. Tropical beaches abound but there's so much more. Feed the sacred crocodiles at Paga, plunge into the waterfalls of the eastern highlands, marvel at the game-rich savannah of Mole National Park, or relive the chilling story of the coastal slave forts.
This guide has been expanded and fully updated for this second edition. It contains information on where to stay, eat, and how to get around; Ghanaian culture, from social traditions to kente cloth weaving; natural history and national parks and over 50 clear maps and town plans.
Customer Reviews:
An essential Book!.......2004-01-10
Living in Ghana for 7 months would have been impossible without this book (or its predecessor) to help me. Packed with information that is easy to read, set out clearly and in not to small a print! This new edition has accounts by people who have lived or visited these places to give you another take on things. Phillip Briggs writes with enthusiasm and because he has actually been to these places and stayed there for some time he is familiar with the way of things. My book was falling apart by the time I left as it had been used, thumbed through and taken so many places. I will definately be using Bradt travel guides whenever I go away again.
The Bradt guide rocks my world!.......2003-09-03
The Bradt guide was indispensible during my 2 month stay in Ghana. While there were some inaccurate prices quoted, Briggs did explain in his introduction that these prices fluctuate with a currency as weak as the cedi and therefore this was expected. I found the book to be immensely useful and accurate. I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Ghana for any length of time and I eagerly await the 3rd edition.
Travel to Ghana with this book.......2003-08-07
This is absolutely the best guide book for traveling to Ghana. I don't know how I would have gotten around without it. The Bradt guide covers all the regions of Ghana intensively with clear descriptions of transportation, accommodation, where to eat, etc. What makes this book stand out from the rest are the maps of small towns and villages that are detailed and very accurate.
With its tips on bargaining, prices, and cultural advice you can easily just step off the plane and plan your vacation straight from this book. I found while traveling around the back roads of Ghana for 6 weeks that my fellow travelers were constantly borrowing my copy. Even when I was in way out areas I was able to whip out my book and find places to eat and sleep.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who's planning a trip to Ghana, and especially if your trip is away from tourist areas. I suggest traveling away from the cities anyway. The rural areas are so much more traditional and untouched that I found it more enjoyable than the urban areas.
Briggs details an often difficult country.......2003-04-24
In anticipation of my first trip to Africa and more specifically, Ghana, I decided that having a guide on hand would make the trip easier and less stressful. I traveled with a group of eight students from the U.S., none of whom had researched the country or had any idea what they were getting themselves into.
After purchasing Phillip Briggs' book I began thumbbing through and highlighting places of interest. I read his synopsis of the country and learned enough information based on that to educate my fellow travelers. Throughout my six weeks in Ghana, I used his book on a daily basis. From restaurant suggestions to tourist attractions to detailed directions in an often mind boggling setting, Briggs was right on the money and made our trip much easier. While he sometimes failed to emphasize the road hazards (i.e. the Baobeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary whose dirt path stretched for endless miles and whose potholes almost toppled our van.), that was our only complaint. Phillip Briggs definitely made my trip to Ghana an enjoyable one. I'm anxious to get back and see even more of the places he describes.
Some thoughts on Briggs' Second edition, guide to Ghana..........2002-06-26
In that this follows a number of other reviews of Philip Briggs' "Ghana--The Bradt Travel Guide" (second edition), there may be a "coals to Newcastle" aspect to my comments. I found the first edition, recommended by a Ghanaian friend, very helpful on a trip to Ghana in February of 2001. I've since bought the second (updated and expanded) edition, and find it as readable as the first, as well as continuing to give a reasonable level of detail about getting around, places to stay, and things to see. There are some pet items that in my view would have warranted mention, such as the universities in Cape Coast and Kumasi, but it's not reasonable to expect everything about a country to show up in 354 pages. Having worked in Ghana years ago, I was not starting from zero when picking up Briggs' book. I had also been checking with a few Ghanaian friends, and had been looking into websites. Maybe that's the main point to make: No single source of information, even a very good guidebook such as this one, can be entirely complete and up-to-date.
From the U.S., at least, your visa application may be your first encounter with Ghanaian bureaucracy. Unless you live close to the embassy in Washington or the consulate in New York, get started at least two months in advance. Once in Ghana, you'll need to get adjusted to some third-world realities. Those used to North American and European infrastructure and scheduling efficiency may have to remind themselves that things really will typically take longer, that power and water outages can be frequent, that transportation will not always be fully predictable, and that breakdowns should not be a surprise. Get on the road early whenever possible, make sure that you fill that bucket in the bathroom promptly on arrival, and keep a flashlight handy. Ghana is not, in short, the sort of "autofocus" vacation area that we may tend to expect, but instead qualifies as your "grittier, more economical, more authentic African experience". Keep in mind that if you have travelled all day and arrived somewhere hot, sweaty, dusty and grimy, that your initial impression of a destination will probably not be as favorable as it will be a day later, once you have had the chance to clean up, rest up, and get calibrated to the place. Ghanaians pointed out to us, and our experience verified, that transportation functions more efficiently in southern and central Ghana than it does further north, and one should plan accordingly. Philip Briggs' guide to Ghana will definitely help in that planning.
Book Description
No issue is more hotly debated than how, or even if, a politician's private life affects his public competence. In
A Question of Character John F. Kennedy's two lives—public and private—are examined to answer this timely question. Respected historian and biographer Thomas C. Reeves reveals discrepancies between JFK's public persona, which has reached mythic proportions, and his scandalous private behavior. Most illuminating is the constant theme or Joe Kennedy's almost total control of JFK's behavior and politics throughout most of his son's career.
"The John Kennedy who emerges from these pages was not a man of good moral character. He was reared not to be good but to win." — Los Angeles Times
Reeves has provided the most truthful and balanced assessment of John F. Kennedy to date. Written more in sorrow than in anger, A Question of Character explores the sensitive and difficult question of how people, and history itself, ought to judge the relationship between personal character and national leadership.
Customer Reviews:
A hatchet job on one of our most courageous & revolutionary presidents.......2007-06-09
Too bad there is so much money to be made by trying to assassinate President Kennedy's character. Authors like this guy and Sy Hersh won't get a penny from me.
This book starts with an incorrect statement of a fact.......2007-04-02
This book starts with a totally incorrect statement. JFK took the oath of office on Jan 20th, 1961. This is dictated by the 20th. Amendment
John F. Kennedy was not someone to look up to.......2006-03-21
Thomas C. Reeves' fine book lays bare the myth of "Camelot"-which the Kennedy family and its sycophants have tried to perpetuate since the day he was shot-as well as the myths surrounding the entire family, which is perhaps the most dysfunctional family ever to achieve significant political power in American history. Fortunately, for America, the Kennedy family's last gasps of any political significance are being uttered by Ted Kennedy, who would probably be finishing his prison term now instead of serving in the U.S. Senate, for having been responsible for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne in 1969, just as she was about to celebrate her 29th birthday.
Today, few young Americans even know who John F. Kennedy was-or care about him-because less than a handful of his positive accomplishments had any lasting significance. Like William McKinley, the fact that an assassin cut short Kennedy's life and presidency might be all that Americans recall about him 50 years from now. More than 40 years after Kennedy's death, the full extent of his life-long medical problems is still being withheld from the American people and conservative scholars, and Reeves recounts many of those problems.
Kennedy launched this nation into Vietnam; and his secretary of defense, Robert McNamara, was the architect of that lost war and the enormous suffering that it produced. More than 50,000 brave Americans died, and it impaled this nation's honor on the horns of a tragedy that still haunts policy makers and citizens alike. Even before Vietnam, Kennedy was responsible for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, where Fidel Castro humiliated him completely. This led to more than 40 years of enslavement for the Cuban people. The Cuban Missile Crisis, or Kennedy's confrontation with the Soviet Union, might have given rise to a nuclear winter.
His reckless affairs with women were only outdone by his irresponsible and dangerous relationships with mobsters such as Chicago crime boss Sam Giancana. These two character flaws merged when both Kennedy and Giancana had sexual liaisons with Judith Campbell Exner, who was used as their go-between. Indeed, it is doubtful whether Kennedy would have become president in 1960 if the Mob had not helped him in Illinois and West Virginia-and Giancana claimed credit for that. Kennedy was the son of a bootlegger, and the apple did not fall far from the tree, with respect to the three Kennedy brothers who entered national politics.
John F. Kennedy was not someone to look up to, much less deify. Many of us came to that conclusion reluctantly, years ago, with a sense of sadness rather than anger. Like the potentate in Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, "The Emperor's New Clothes," the myth about Kennedy and his feet of clay have become clear for all to see with the passage of time. Greatness is often achieved in times of war, and Kennedy never won the war with Cuba, much less the Vietnam War that he started, nor did he win the Cold War-which Reagan won. Kennedy was a tragic Shakespearean figure who may be forgotten and consigned to the dustheap of history, in no small part because of the question of character that Reeves described brilliantly in his terrific book.
crud---avoid.......2006-01-03
As the leading civilian authority on the U.S. Secret Service (and President Kennedy's interaction with the agency), I was much interested in this book by Thomas--not relation (thank God!) to Richard---Reeves. This is, quite simply, a hatchet job on JFK, and not a very good one: a better one (!) comes from the poison pen of Seymour Hersh, who at least had better sources and a keener insight. Avoid.

Informative, objective work undercovering the real man.......2004-10-06
A very pleasurable reading, well researched, a work that brings Kennedy to his real light of man and politician and this is a useful deed because the judgement of his political action should NOT be influenced by the sad way in which his life ended. To the author's credit, Reeves begins describing how the truth in every field was distorted to promote Kennedy in the political arena, but in the end he can recognize too the cases in which the President acted effectively. Advisable to read.

Book Description
She invites the reader into her life and into the questions raised by a crime with no obvious solutions or easy answers. We see the dimensions of a human struggle often kept hidden from view. While there are an estimated twelve million rape survivors in the United States, rape is still unspeakable, left out of our personal and cultural conversation. In Telling, Francisco has found a language for the secret grief carried by men and women who have survived rape.
Customer Reviews:
An Unforgettable story.......2003-12-10
This is an absolutely unforgettable book because of Francisco's honesty and openess, as well as the clarity and beauty of her writing. I read this book a year ago, and have read many books since then, but the author's story of perserverance has stayed with me.
A masterpiece - a precious gift!.......2002-03-28
This was the 1st book I read on my road to recovery 35 years after having been a victim. It helped give me the courage, strength and hope to move forward toward on my own journey towards healing.
Compelling and Well-Written, Struck Me Right To The Core.......2000-04-21
As difficult as it was for me to read this book, due to it's similarity to my experience, I found it to be so extremely compelling--I couldn't put it down! Ms.Francisco has an incredible command of the English language and was able to communicate in painful detail, her inner-most thoughts and feelings, before, during and after the rape. As I read this book, I went through and highlighted many many many passages that I felt pertained directly to me.....so that my husband could read it and gain better insight into what I was and still am thinking. This is a wonderful, amazing book, that both rape survivors and non-rape survivors can benefit from.
Inspiring and truthful.......2000-04-05
This was truly a great book. I could identify so well with all that was said. I had all the members of my family read it and have recommended it to many because it is of such high quality.
A work that touches the heart of many........1999-09-15
What courage to share this experience for the benefit of many. As more women share the experience of rape and the devastating affects on the lives of the victims the more we can do to help. Another great story is Ultimate Power Enemy Within the Ranks by a woman officer in the Army. Both are telling and offer hope for the many victims who need help.

Book Description
Bestselling author Kumiko Sudo creates 45 exquisite handmade gifts in fabric, each with a flair that is uniquely Japanese. Easy-to-follow patterns, beautiful photographs, and colorful step-by-step drawings help the projects come together quickly--many in less than an hour. Whether they are created in kimono silks or in contemporary cottons, these tiny boxes, purses, decorative toys, incense pouches, and good luck charms all make delightful gifts.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, fun crafts.......2007-05-14
Kumiko is a master of her craft and her book shows some of her cutest work. While the patterns are fairly simple. she leaves out important hints that make recreating her projects difficult if you aren't paying attention. Pay close attention to the weight and type of fabric that she uses but does not mention in her directions. If you use a heavier fabric than what she used, you may need to adjust the pattern to make it work. I wouldn't recommend this for a complete beginning sewer. Otherwise this is a great book full of fun projects.
Omiyage: Handmade Gifts from Fabric in the Japanese Tradition.......2007-05-14
I like Kumiko Sudo's criations and this book is not an exemption.
Great gift idias and easy to follow instractions.
Beautiful Book.......2007-03-20
I love looking at this book. The paper used, photos and layout are all very attractive.
I've only started working on one project but the instructions are clear and the illustrations helpful.
Beautiful Book, Beautiful Art, Shoddy Editing.......2007-03-03
Ms. Sudo makes Exceptional gifts and notions, and this book is a Delight to read! Her thoughts on Seasons and Gifts are educational and inspiring, especially to one, such as myself, who has not been steeped in Japanese culture. As an Art book, I would have given it five (5) stars.
Having said that, I've made several of the projects (five to date) and found substantial errors in pattern measurements, inadequate or missing directions, and misleading diagrams. It's such a shame that Ms. Sudo's inspired artwork was giving shoddy treatment! I do agree with "A Reader"'s opinion that the directions must not have been proofread. I muttered more than once "The Editor should be Flogged!"
Beautiful items/difficult to reproduce.......2007-03-02
This woman is an extremely talented artisan. She grew up in Japan. She started as a child making these beutiful trinkets. This book is for someone with PRE knowledge of Japanese artistry, its terms, and practice on small things throughout her entire life. Its much more complex than what I expected. I sure do wish I had just a fraction of her talent. It was very hard for me to give the book a number to measure its usefullness, or directions its just way out of my league. But for someone who posses this talent I think the book would be treasured.

Earthly Pleasures.......2007-05-14
Anyone growing up or living on a working farm in Ohio (or any other small family farm location) should relate to this book if for no other reason than picturing a dairy cow, floating with inner tubes around each leg, happily munching on duckweed. Each of the short essays, originally found in Horticulture Magazine, entertain and educate. Mr. Swain's easy writing style holds your attention quite easily. It is possible to read the entire book in one sitting, however, it is equally possible to put the book down after each essay and think about the intracacies of nature and living. If you can find the original hard bound book with the marvelous illustrations, it is well worth the effort to do so.
Light reading for gardeners.......2005-07-22
This book is a collection of essays by Roger Swain, biologist and gardener. The essays all originally appeared in Horticulture magazine during the late 1970s and early 1980s. They are loosely arranged around the gardening calendar year, from maple sugaring season to ripening of tomatoes to mistletoe. Other topics covered include parsnips, classification of species, insect seed dispersal, tree bark, shade-loving plants, roadsalt, woodchucks, dung beetles, attracting wild bees, duckweed, lightning, night-blooming plants, fungus and roots, sauerkraut, squirrels and nuts, fungus and food rot, and snow cover. End material includes suggestions for further reading and an index.
The essays are short and written in very informal style-in fact, the entire book can be read cover-to-cover in a few hours. Mixed in with Swain's personal experiences in the garden are some tidbits of useful information, like how to maximize the sugar content in one's parsnips, or the nutritional value of duckweed. Altogether, it makes for light yet worthwhile reading.
A good book to recommend to others or give as a gift........1997-11-17
An excellent book! Short chapters about the biological happenings in and around a garden, yard, woodlot, etc. A good book to recommend to others or to give as a gift. Easy to understand, even for a total non-biologist, but not condescending to someone who knows something about the subject. Interesting, new, and informative.

Not enough descriptive sex.......2000-05-02
It was Ok, but a bit boring. Only a step above a romance novel. I was looking for something more along the lines of The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, by Rollaquare. The other reviews were a bit misleading. The descriptions were good, but not long enough...
A great book of sex and sf!.......1998-12-11
It is hard to find a well written fantasy book that is erotic: This one is hot! Although I am not a fan of short stories, each of these has a nice twist, while the sf holds well together and the sex is present enough to interrupt your reading frequently. At the same time, it is respectful of the characters involved. Don't think it is less sexy for that! As an occasional amateur of sm, I was happy to find a well written book that is neither sm or plain gay (or both as the enjoyable Beauty novels are). In brief, a thoroughly enjoyable book, that stimulates both intellect and lower parts! A full-fledge novel of the same author would definitely be on my priority list!

In this unique synthesis of Eastern and Western healing approaches, Gabriel Mojay combines the practice of aromatherapy with the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine. Mojay explains the esoteric and energetic healing properties of 40 essential oils and shows how they can be used to manipulate qi, the body's vital energy, to stimulate healing from negative emotional and mental states. Some forms of nervous tension, for example, are caused by stagnant qi energy, which can be released with essential oils.Â
Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit provides help for a wide range of common emotional and mental complaints--including depression, low energy, lack of concentration, poor memory, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Easy-to-reference charts and full-color illustrations teach simple aromatherapeutic massage and acupressure techniques that restore balance to the body and psyche.
Customer Reviews:
something different about essential oils.......2007-03-17
There are three main sections in this book. The first gives an overview of Traditional Medicine principles. The second part gives a detailed description of the most common essential oils and their effects, not like any aromatherapy book because it incorporates the Chinese Medicine principles as heating, warming, cooling, yin and yang...There is an indication on how to use the oils on some major Chinese acupuncture points. The third part deals with some ailments related to the mind ill health
It is a very different book indeed, and as an Aromatherapist working with cases of stress and anxiety , I am very glad to have added it to my bookshelf.
I already knew that the same oil work differently on different people, now I know why!
Thanks for Amazon, their fast delivery and their huge choice
Gem of a book.......2007-01-07
This is one of those rare books that surpassed my expectations. This is not your typical aromatherapy book and this book contains practically no recipes (it has just a few). What you'll find in this book is about 40 of the most-popular aromatherapy essential oils brought to life. The author does this successfully by looking at the essential oils from the perspective of the Chinese five-elements, and by juxtaposing the essential oils with archetypes from mythology, religion and astrology, helping you to experience the "personality" of each essential oil.
The author goes over some common psychological and emotional issues that people experience and suggests which essential oils may be most suitable. The book also contains a couple of illustrated pages related to applying massage and accupressure.
aomatherapy for healing the spirit.......2006-11-01
a lovely book and a deep look at how aromatherapy can heal emotions
beautifully written
i would recommend this book highly
One of the most unique books on aromatherapy available.......2006-03-21
This is definitely one of my favorite books on aromatherapy, as it includes not only fairly exhaustive information regarding a variety of essential oils and their effects on mood but how these EOs relate to astrology, mythology and Chinese philosophy. The book also discusses various techniques employed in using oils and offers clear verbal and visual descriptions of massage techniques. All in all, I think it's a fascinating and lovely book (there are quite a few full color photographs and drawings). My only complaint, which isn't much of a complaint, is that Mojay covered "only" 40 oils. His descriptions of the oils were so intriguing that I would love to see him publish a completely comprehensive work.
Well-written.......2006-03-03
This book was well-written, and gives a nice overview of the Chinese view of the elements and yin and yang. It uses this information as a basis of how to achieve balance and determine which oils will have the best effect. The book covers a wide range of commonly available essential oils in good detail, including the elements that rule them and both physical and psychological applications. The book's biggest shortcoming was it's index. I feel that it should have been more in-depth and have included more of the physical conditions that are listed in each oil's description so that it would be easier to find which oils treat which disorders.

Book Description
Salvador Dalí (1904-1988) was one of the most popular and most visible artists of the last century, known for his provocative works and his larger-than-life personality. He created an astoundingly diverse body of work, including paintings, drawings, prints, book illustration, films, and stage sets. Whatever the medium, his works were filled with dreamlike, fetishistic images rendered in a precise, hyperrealist style. In this fascinating account, art historian Jean-Louis Gaillemin focuses on the intimate details of Dalí's life, especially his intense relationship with his longtime partner Gala, and how his psychological views and state of mind influenced his work.
