    Book Description

This book is the first of its kind to present a comprehensive treatment of the biology of the chrysophytes. The â€~golden algae’, a group of predominantly fresh water microorganisms, have distinctive features that present much information about their taxonomic classification, their place in evolution and their role in the environment. The occurrence of silica scales, identified only by electron microscopy, is a unique characteristic of some members of the group. Paleobiologists and geologists have found the cysts of chrysophytes fossilised in sediments. The ecological significance of the chrysophytes is evident from their abundance in acid bogs and lakes, a condition that has created a new group of investigators concerned with these unique algae and the changing environment. These are just some of the aspects of chrysophyte biology that are dicussed here. This book provides a strong foundation towards understanding today’s living forms of chrysophyte algae and sheds light on the probable aquatic ecosystems of the past. The papers collected here are a result of the First International Chrysophyte Symposium held at the University of North Dakota in 1953.

1 out of 5 stars Worst travel book I have ever purchased.......2001-01-04

This book looks great but is actually just a listing of hotels and wineries that belong to a trade association. I looked for the names of 10 wineries and 5 top restaurants that my wine merchant told me to visit. Not one of them is listed. The ones that are listed are very small and most of them don't even export their wines to the US. No thanks!!

1 out of 5 stars This is only a paid advertisement - nothing more.......2000-12-29

I collect Italian wine and at first glance thought this book would be perfect to plan a trip to the Italian wine regions. Then I tried to find the top 20 Italian wineries - not one is listed. Nonetheless, all the reviews were just glowing - all the wines were great, all the hotels were perfect, etc., etc. Then I read the statement (I paraphrase): "All members of the National Association for Wine Tourism as of XX date are listed in this book." Hey, that's advertisement - no one should be tricked into paying money for that. If I'm buying a book, I want - and expect! - the views of an independent writer.

4 out of 5 stars great for wine tourism.......2000-06-27

this is a wonderful book: beautifully done and full of good information about sampling the wineries of Italy. It also lists golf courses and antiwue shops near the wineries. It mentions associations and websites to learn more about wine, alough it neglects "theitalianwinestore.com"

      Book Description

In July 1998, when Maxine Kumin's horse bolted at a carriage-driving clinic, she was not expected to live. Yet, less than a year later, her progress pronounced a miracle by her doctors, she was at work on this journal of her astonishing recovery. She tells of her time "inside the halo," the near-medieval device that kept her head immobile during weeks of intensive care and rehabilitation, of the lasting "rehab" friendships, and of the loving family who always believed she would heal.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Marvellous Max!.......2002-03-15

Like many of Maxine Kumin's devoted reader/fan/friends, I came to her poetry through Anne Sexton's poetry/life.

However, as wonderful as Sexton's poetry is, and I love Anne Sexton's poetry, Maxine Kumin's poetry and prose can well stand on its own considerable merits.

Inside The Halo is a wonderful, gutsy, thoughtful book.

Having had some "orthopedic trauma" myself, though nowhere as severe as the accident Kumin survived, I can attest to the abundant truth she tells about the frustrations and joys of rehabilitation, and the "tough tenderness" of the best therapists.

Kumin also speaks movingly of how her amazing husband, children, and grandchildren rallied to see her through.

This is a difficult book to write about, because words like "uplifting" have become debased with casual use.

However, I am of the unshakable opinion that all doctors, nurses, therapists, and lovers of great writing would find something real in this fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Inside the Halo and Beyond.......2000-08-19

Putting thoughts into words is the salvation of many, particularly Maxine Kumin, who describes her recovery from paralysis in "Inside the Halo and Beyond." I was recently paralyzed myself, so I keenly identified with the account of her rehabilitation. Yet I felt pangs of jealousy because she walks again and the chances are nil this will happen to me.

Still, this book deserves an all-star rating for Kumin's eloquent and starkly honest description of her connections to poetry, literature, current events, international suffering, nature, equestrian riches, gardening, familial and friendly relations. She evokes empapthy and compassion without resorting to sappy sentiment or references to God. She explains, "My agnosticism eroded eventually to the skeletal remains of atheism and there I still stand. I'm not sure whether I should envy or pity the faith of others. Yes, it would be nice to have, but it seems a luxury of pietism I cannot afford."

Her love of words is eloquent: "I've always been a galloping reader, racing for information, hurtling past intervening advertisements or cartoons, breathless and fascinated with language."

      It's a fine book.

      5 out of 5 stars WHAT NOURISHES.......2000-07-19

Maxine Kumin has given us a gift. "Illness, disability, the specter of permanent damage... are deeply personal, immediate, and terrifying," she writes. Indeed. This chronicle of recovery from a cervical spinal injury sustained after her horse bolted is a courageous foray through the intense first ten months of recovery.

More than a story of pluck and resilience this book delivers joy in its reaffirmation of what nourishes us: loving relationships. Relationships with husband, son, daughters, and friends--both old and newly formed in recovery-- and relationships to the land, to its bounty. It seems impossible for someone so connected to life to ever give up on it easily. Kumin narrates, in journal form, her struggles and how she didn't quit.

Kumin's life unfolds in this book. We see the stoic formed when her adored father "hovered in the doorway" when she was ill as a child; the horse lover who takes "deep pleasure" in seeing her horses in action; the gardener describing cauliflower and broccoli lovingly planted in May from seeds started on living room windowsills; and the poet who says of her farmhouse, "All of my doors are held open by stones."

The mother and wife are here, too. Kumin's daughter, Judith, spends months with her mother. It is comforting to read of a supportive, caring, daughter/mother relationship that flourishes during a time of great stress. Kumin is not afraid to tell us about moments of guilt and despair: "How I feel about my accident is quite simply that I screwed up everybody's life by living through it."

All this is written within a flowing narrative style that is groomed by this writer's cumulative knowledge of what is important in language and life.

Maxine Kumin is one of my favorite poets. I cheered when this well-paced chronicle led to a spring when this writer was finally back in the "peaceful kingdom" of her farm in New Hampshire. I am grateful the author has offered a book that allows us to witness her struggle as she looked inward and reached out.

5 out of 5 stars Wise, upbeat, gorgeously written and utterly inspirational.......2000-07-16

Pulitzer prize winning poet-naturalist Maxine Kumin chronicles a period of nine months, from the horrible horse-and-carriage accident that left her with a 5% chance of survival, and an even tinier prospect of ever walking again, to the time she is once again able to scramble up steep hills on her farm in New Hampshire again, albeit with difficulty. Hers is a statistically improbable recovery brought about not just by discipline and determination, and certainly not by faith (she is an atheist), but by love -- her family's love of her, and her own love not just for husband, children and grandchildren, but for horses, dogs, birds, vegetable garden, the seasons, and above all art and her craft. A passionate biophiliac, Kumin's love of nature can not be separated from her love of others, or her will to survive. This is an inpsirational book at so many levels. I completed it within hours of getting my hands on it, with my husband (a medical doctor) urging me to keep going, because I was reading it out loud to him and to my thirteen year old son. Inside the Halo... is wise, upbeat, gorgeously written and utterly inspirational. Someone you know scheduled for an operation? Had an accident? Run into some discouraging news? Forget the card. Book Description

What makes a piece of jewelry special isn't the cost--it's the creativity, novelty, and originality that go into the design. And this imaginative and informative compendium of jewelry-making techniques, packed with more than 700 color images and written by the noted jeweler and instructor Carles Codina, features a range of contemporary alternative materials. From paper, wood, and polymer clay to glass, new metal formats, and plastics, each material receives detailed attention, with the key techniques demonstrated in a single, finished project. Mold and embellish paper clay to create a whimsical brooch. Fold rice paper into a sculptural bracelet. To finish in style, there are six additional items to make that build upon earlier skills, including a necklace of hollow ceramic orbs.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your library.......2007-01-07

Well done Carles Codina, this is a great "one stop shop" book that gives you a clear taste of many of the myriad of media available to the multi media artist. Resin, Polymer,Paper Clay, Enamelling, Glass, Wood, ceramic, PMC and many more. I had never used Egyptian Paste before and this book gave me the confidence to try it and use it in a few designs. The photos are top quality, incredibly easy instructions and photos to assist you. All in all one of the best project based books I have purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Expand your jewelry skills with new materials.......2006-12-12

This is a valuable book for any jewelry making enthusiast or professional, looking for ways to expand their skills and explore new design horizons.

To my knowledge there is not another book available that addresses so many alternative materials so clearly, with step by step projects and fantastic gallery photos by contributing artists. See what you can do with polymer, paper, glass, resin, wood and more!

I'm a bit picky regarding eye strain I abhor books with dense type and small pix... I like open clear pages high contrast and sharp images- this is my kind of book! It's oversized with well laid out text and loads of photos of projects and gorgeous gallery pieces.

There is a great section on various glass beadmaking techniques for those curious about the craft. The section on making molds for resin bangles alone is worth the purchase.

This book covers a lot, but is not an in-depth exploration of any one subject. I feel that the purpose it serves is one of inspiration with plenty of information for a jeweler to get started working with any of the materials featured. Where you go after that is up to you!

One important thing to note: the author refers to products available in Latin America or Spain. Some products may have to be searched for a bit, but with Google I think it should be easy enough to do. However, if you're a person who has to be able to get all your supplies at Michael's you may want to skip it.

5 out of 5 stars Tips on using alternative materials to produce professional-quality results.......2006-07-09

A range of modern alternative materials are used for producing the works in The New Jewelry: Contemporary Materials & Techniques, differentiating it from other jewelry-making books which focus on old standards. Here are jewelry creations made from rice paper, paper clay, wood, polymer clay and plastics. Here too are tips on using alternative materials to produce professional-quality results. Step-by-step color photos accompany finished product photos to review every step of the process.

5 out of 5 stars Another must have winner.......2006-04-13

This is another must have art metal/jewelry book. Covering in depth the use of contemporary material and with just enough of the techniques. That will allow you to do the project you are trying out to a fine conclusion. It is done in the visual learning style with short descriptive texts along with the clear concise pictures.I think this is another instant classic that will rightfully be around for a long time to come. I own it I have used it and plan on keeping it

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good, but not recommended for beginners.......2002-02-06

The photos are the finest I have seen in many of the macreme books. The instructions are left open, permitting you to add your own personal touch, which at times can be difficult if you are used to concrete step-by-step instructions. I would however suggest that if you are a beginner you should start with a more basic book such as Hemp Masters. The New Macreme is a book for intermidiate and advanced, due to its very open ended intructions and the materials used. But all in all it is great book to further yourself, and try new ideas and help expand on old ones.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough "new" to make it worth buying........2002-01-01

When a book is called "The New Macrame," a reader has a right to expect either entirely different knotting techniques or totally different projects. What is new about this book is that it contains many more color pictures than previous macrame books. It also has several updated looks in jewelry--for example, there is a "Y" necklace style, a ring and earrings made of wire instead of hemp, and an aroma therapy bottle necklace.
However, if I squinted a little, that aromatherapy bottle cover could have been a plant hanger of the 1960s. And the "Y" necklace still has it's roots in the 1960s hairy hemp and big ol' E beads. And that's my main objection to the book. It's not really new.
The square knot, half knot, lark's head, and half hitch aren't new. Using wire is new, but one ring and one set of earrings doesn't qualify the book as "new." Showing the old knots with new materials--Conso, Stringth, or colored art wire would have given the reader a useful comparison. But that isn't in the book.
The descriptions are shown, both with a line drawing and a photograph, and for the person with experience, that's enough. But for someone new to macrame, each knot diagram could have had one more stage, half way through, shown. This book makes the mistake many user's manuals make--the writers don't pay attention to the needs of the audience. If it's a book for beginners, more steps are needed. If it's a book for advanced knot-tiers, give us advanced projects.
The titles of the projects are also off-putting. Who wants to make a "Yuppie Puppy Leash and Collar"? And why would you call an earring pattern "Take Two Earrings and Call Me in The Morning"? or a belt a "Fringe Benefit Belt"?
Beginning macrame students would do far better looking for help in "The 'knotty' Macrame and Beading Book" by Wendy Connor and advanced students will be happier with "Braiding and Knotting Techniques and Projects" by Constantine A. Belash.

3 out of 5 stars Good photos, needs more directions.......2001-06-25

I liked all the color photographs for ideas, but I agree with the other reader that when I went to try a project, I had a hard time understanding the knotting directions...could have used more pictures/instructions in the "how to knot" section. If you already know the basic knots, this might be a good "idea" book.

1 out of 5 stars The New macrame.......2000-05-27

I found this book to be severly lacking in good instructions and illustrations. I began the Rainbow Card Caddy project but I could not make my project look like the one in the book based on the instructions given. The book has illustrations of the knots but they are not enough to complete the project as written.

2 out of 5 stars Why the embarrassment over being known as a grandparent?.......2002-09-23

I didn't like the book's emphasis on being embarrassed about being a grandparent. There was a lot of stuff about being humiliated about seeming old when the child calls out "grandma." But the author goes on to assure her own kids that this doesn't mean anything, she loves the grandchild, just doesn't want anyone to know it's her grandchild.

This is hurtful to the child, no matter what the author says. The grandparents' vanity is more important to the grandparent than the child's feelings.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book for baby boomers.Extremely good ideas,funny & fun.......1997-09-07

              Book Description

The lifetime of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) coincides with the most tumultuous period in the history of France and much of the Western world. And David's life was closely bound up with the changes that were taking place in French politics, society, and culture. Although most other scholars have focused either on David's artistic activity or on his political career, Warren Roberts examines the connections between these two aspects of his life. Using a historical approach, Roberts provides an interpretation of David's art that illuminates David the man.

Roberts presents David's art as a personal record that is an extension of his inner life and a product of historical conditions. David's art, like his character and his actions, cannot be fully understood without understanding the changes that led to and then flowed from the French Revolution. Roberts here considers these changes and their impact on David from the perspectives of the historian and the art historian, and he comes to conclusions that are important for both.
