5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive and updated of all Tibet guidebooks.......2005-02-07

This book provides a more profound insight into Tibet for those interested in Tibetan culture, trekking and adventure travel, than the others that are on the market. It is the most comprehensive guide- uniquely including the vast eastern regions of Kham, Amdo and Gyarong, as well as Ngari and Utsang. The book avoids the traditional steriotypes of Tibet and includes much information directly translated from original Tibetan sources as well as data derived from more than 50 fieldwork expeditions and trips in Tibet. The author, Dr Gyurme Dorje, is a Tibetologist, who has been involved in Tibetan studies for over 30 years, and has authored several books on diverse aspects of Tibetan culture. His handbook has the advantage of being continuously updated.

3 out of 5 stars An indispensable guidebook with great scope for improvement.......1999-11-25

Tibet Handbook with Bhutan, by Gyurme Dorje (Footprint Handbooks, Bath, England, 2nd edition 1999, 952pp plus maps).

The greatest strength of this book is that it is the only guidebook to give a substantial account of all parts of the Tibetan plateau, both inside and outside the so-called Tibetan Autonomous Region. For that reason it is, despite its conspicuous faults, indispensable for the traveller to Tibet whose itinerary extends beyond the familiar lands of central Tibet. The book is not to be confused with "Tibet Handbook" by Victor Chan.

"Tibet Handbook with Bhutan" is a guide to all Tibetan regions governed by the People's Republic of China, with additional chapters on Bhutan and the Kathmandu valley of Nepal. It would have been useful to include the Tibetan borderlands in Nepal and north-west India Ä although it is no doubt expedient politically to imply that no part of Tibet lies outside the territory China governs.

At 650 grams, the new edition (paperback) is almost twice the weight of the first, hardback, edition - a curious development for a travel guidebook.

The book includes useful background information about Tibetan religion, iconography and history. The bulk of the book deals with the regions of the Tibetan plateau by devoting a section to each one of the 158 counties into which the People's Republic of China divides it. This approach turns out to be surprisingly intelligible.

There is extensive information about religious places, and buildings and their contents. There is much less information about other matters such as topography, agriculture, educational facilities, military establishments, and political structures. It is as though, in a way, those things belong to a different Tibet.

The book enjoys the benefit of the author's experience as a scholar and tour guide. It also suffers the limitations of that experience, and is often short on practical details for the independent traveller. It is written in a concise style that betrays no trace of personality.

The second edition has been expanded considerably, mainly with valuable information about counties where information in the first edition was inadequate. Unfortunately, the author has not taken the opportunity to check the much more extensive material carried over from the first edition. If he would make time to do that, he would find innumerable internal contradictions within the text and between the text and the often wildly inaccurate small county maps. Almost any numeral, particularly distances, should be treated with suspicion. The relationship between the county population figures and those in the 1996 edition show impossible fluctuations; they go unremarked, but indicate that at least one of the sets of figures is worthless, and perhaps both. The inherent confusion in the existence of both Tibetan and Chinese names for the same places demands a consistency of usage in a guidebook which this one does not quite manage to attain.

An indispensable book, with the scope to become much better.

                          Book Description

This is the story of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the influence their summer home on Campobello Island had upon them. It is a personal history that examines the Roosevelts' background and traditions and explores their public trials, tragedies, and triumphs, as well as the frustrations and disappointments of their private lives. Campobello played a vital role in the formation of character for both Franklin and Eleanor, and provided them with physical challenges and emotional solace. It was at Campobello that Franklin was felled by polio, the most defining event in both their private lives and public careers. This story is peppered with anecdotes, personal letters, and the reminiscences of the aides, friends, and family who played important roles in their lives.

                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Move Over, Stephen Ambrose.......2001-07-01

This is a well-researched and well-written glimpse of one of the most famous and influential couples of the 20th Century. It reads extremely well while casting new light on two already-much studied lives but from an entirely new perspective. Jonas Klein proposes that FDR and Eleanor were in some measure defined by the Campobello experience and makes a credible case for it.

Before picking up Beloved Island I had just finished reading one more of Stephen AmbroseÕ books on World War II and, quite frankly, had tired a little of the rhythm and predictability in his technique of stringing together many individual Òoral historiesÓ to create a coherent whole. He does it very well, of course, but Jonas Klein does it better. Working mostly from snapshot detail in correspondence, I presume, Klein succeeds in portraying the larger portraits of personality, emotion, relationships, and other intangibles that make figures from history what they really are.

Though not quite a Òone sittingÓ experience, this little book leads us gently to further thought and deeper understanding about Franklin and Eleanor. ItÕs a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally well researched & well-written.......2001-02-13

Beloved Island: Franklin & Eleanor And The Legacy Of Campobello examines how the Roosevelt summer home on New Brunswick's Campobello Island (a remote Canadian location) had a significant physical and emotional influence on their lives and the events of their day. While acknowledging the Roosevelt's' traditions and background, Jonas Klein presents a fresh perspective on their public trials and triumphs as well as their personal frustrations and private disappointments as showcased by their Campobello residency. It was at Campobello that Franklin was stricken with polio, that Eleanor found peace and refuge from a demanding and unsympathetic world, and that their personal and political relationship as formed in a manner that would serve them both to the end of their lives. Exceptionally well researched, well-written, insightful, informative, and totally engaging biography.

I was excited when I first saw this book advertised. Anyone who has studied the Roosevelts knows the fundamental emotional foundation this island provided the family. However, when I began to read the book, I quickly became disgruntled. There was little to no new information, insight or perspective offered. The author seems to mainly cover the same formulaic roads covered before-- early marriage, polio, governor, president, & Eleanor on her own. The only difference was this books focuses on those same paths through the lens of Campobello. The problem, besides offering little new, is this lens is restrictive, rather than encompassing. If you're looking for an introduction to the Roosevelts, this may be a good selection. However, if you have studied this couple with any kind of attention, nothing profound or enlightning is likely to be found here.

                          Book Description

This biography chronicles the lives of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, focusing on the influence of their summer home on Campobello Island. This personal history examines the Roosevelts' heritage and traditions and explores their public trials, tragedies, and triumphs, as well as the frustrations and disappointments of their private lives. Campobello played a vital role in the formation of character for both Franklin and Eleanor, providing outlets for physical activity and emotional escape. At Campobello, Franklin was afflicted by polio, the most defining event in both their private lives and public careers. This story is peppered with anecdotes, personal letters, and reminiscences of the friends, family, and staff who played important roles in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The daily lives of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.......2002-12-08

Beloved Island: Franklin & Eleanor And The Legacy Of Campobello by Jonas Klein is a touching, memorable, biographical portrayal of two genuinely great figures of 20th Century American history. Here presented are the daily lives of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and how their summer home on Campobello Island influenced them, and rounds out an impressive and painstaking recreation of their personal experiences with anecdotes, personal letters, and the memories of aides, family, and friends. A welcome and much appreciated contribution to the growing library of literature dedicated to the life, thought, and achievements of this politically and socially influential (and often controversial) couple, Beloved Island is an informative and insightful study of the often-hidden inner side of these two remarkable American leaders.

                          Book Description

In early 1999, the author was diagnosed with a tumor on his brain stem. Although successfully removed, the operation left him unable to walk or talk. However, his cognitive powers and sense of humor were unaffected, and he could still write using a word processor and hunt-and-peck typing. Utilizing e-mail correspondence and personal reflection, In Dreams I Run details the author's recovery ... his thoughts, feelings, and how faith and humor played a vital role in his ability to cope with this life-altering trial.

For the price, I would have expected to get a CD with form templates. The paper forms alone are good guidelines, but really not as helpful as I would have expected.

The cover says the book comes with a CD that can be used with Microsoft Word. When I received my copy there was a holder for a CD on the inside of the cover but no CD in it. Since I bought the book in order to draft contracts, and I do not like to type, it is useless. I could not even find a telephone number to call to request the CD.

I purchased the book with the intent of being able to easily draft contracts for various types of horse owner activities. I was not pleased with the example contracts. The book is very poorly done.

For example, the partnership agreement was missing words and apparently sentences, and was missing major partnership points. Essentially,I determined that the writer never read the agreement once in print or ever drafted a useable business partnership agreement.

A beginning law student not knowing anything about the horse business could do a better job drafting the example agreements than the person who attempted to write this book.

                          1 out of 5 stars VERY Disappointing!.......2004-03-19

I bought this book because I needed to have access to different types of contracts associated with my horse business. In the ads it states that the program works with Win 95 all the way up to Win XP. NOT SO! It ONLY works with Win 95 and Win version 3.1. To make matters even worse, the technical support number listed in the back of the book for problems is NONEXISTANT! Some of the tear out blank contracts are OK, if you have the time to tear them out perfectly then scan them into to your computer. In short, this product does you no good if you have a good computer. Find another source for your equine contracts!

To the point with great explanations. Black and white photos are just fine for contrast clarity. This book is a great cover to cover read. Each page has an illustration. He explains the advantages and disadvantage of different type of joinery (for example) and how to accomplish each task by hand or machine and various machines (eg. dovetails on a band saw, by hand, by table saw.) Best woodworking book I have ever purchased and I have purchased dozens.

This Tage Frid fellow knows a thing or two about wood. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent with lots of great information.......2005-12-02

I haven't always been as much of a fan of Frid as others but no one can question his command of woodworking. I think that his stools are some of the nicest designs anywhere. His technical knowledge of woodworking shines here in this book. He is an obvious master of his craft. His books are much more oriented toward 'doing' than James Krenov's books and many people will find it much more useful. There is a wealth of information here, not only in brute technique, but in tips and hints that make shop life a little more pleasant. I learn a bit more each time I read it. Good book.

This is, quite simply put, a fantastic book that every woodworker should own. I highly recommend this book for many of the reasons that others have already written about. Trust their impression...this is a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for Beginner to Intermediate Woodworkers!.......2003-12-16

Tage Frid presents a book that is well organized and insightful. I thought I had a good working knowledge of wood movement and joinery, but Frid offers some points that will help you make furniture that will last generations. The text does contain black and white pictures that can be hard to see, however, if you follow along in the text it will be clear what is being depicted. To address an earlier comment, this is an instruction manual for people interested in the finer points of woodworking and IS NOT a book for "crafty" people who think it would be chic to have a book about woodworking. Frid has been working wood for more than 50 years and his experience and expertise show through in this well written text. If you are interested in making fine pieces of furniture, then this book is a must read!

                          2 out of 5 stars Very b&w.......2003-05-17

In view of all these rave reviews just a cautionary note. This is a reprint of two c 1980 books when b&w pictures were still acceptable, and the book uses very many. Maybe this will grow on the reader after a while, and there are also some illuminating line-drawings but the initial effect of this volume on the unprepared reader is depressing: all those hard to make out greyish b&w pictures. This is not helped by the fact that many feature an elderly, out of shape gentleman. Definitely not a coffee-table book!

Newport, Rhode Island-celebrated 'City by the Sea' and home to America's elite-has a deeply rooted history, both architectural and otherwise, that makes it a perennial destination, with more than 3.5 million visitors each year. The famous properties of the Preservation Society of Newport County, the annual Flower Show, the Jazz Festival, the Tennis Hall of Fame, and corporate retreats all bring a steady stream of tourists to Newport each year. Featuring 275 full-color photographs, this is the first book to reveal the privately owned mansions and gardens of Newport that are closed to the public and not part of the tours given by the Preservation Society. Never-before-published photos of these homes, which have been designed by distinguished architects and landscape designers, are stunning examples of Newport's 375-year old-world architectural heritage.

That's what this book is for any dollhouse collector. If it is true that dollhouses are addictive and you can't have just one, Vivian Greene lives up to that ideal. Her rescue of antique dollhouses from the dustbins of Britain sparked a dollhouse revival that spread to the US and around the world. Yet the book is not full of the grandious rooms of Queen Mary's Dollhouse or Colleen Moore's. It is full of objects and ideas that are well within the reach of the serious and even not so serious collector, as well as period design authentic to each era. Mrs. Greene's dollhouse collection begins with a 17th century dollhouse and continues up to when dollhouses began to be commercially produced. Each is a one of a kind historical artifact. This is my favorite dollhouse book bar none.

I bought this book because my boyfriend is clueless. I thought I had a better chance of communicating some important needs if I read a book that was written for men. Page 70 alone was worth the purchase. enjoy

I recently bought this and its companion, "Light His Fire: How to Keep Your Man Passionately and Hopelessly in Love With you".

The advice in this one has started a few conversations. My husband has enjoyed heckling it, and that has caused a few hurt feelings. It is just close enough to the truth in many ways that I feel heckled too, but not close enough to the truth to help. This reminds me of one of those articles written with the help of gay men to help women understand the men they love. It seems like a good idea, but it doesn't work.

Its companion made for women trying to please their man made, me feel pretty good- brilliant in fact. I had thought of most of the ideas, but they never really worked for my husband. He doesn't seem that impressed by having cookies sent to him at work. It is something a woman would like to have done for her, but the problem is men and women aren't the same. That is why would buy a book like this- right?

In conclusion- If you are a man who wants to get even more confused by women, buy this book. If you are a woman with no creativity, buy, "Light His Fire: How to Keep Your Man Passionately and Hopelessly in Love With you". Otherwise, try something else. If you find something that really works, please let me know!

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding in Some Ways ... So-So in Others.......2005-01-31

The product description for this book reads:

"Whether your marriage is in the doldrums, your relationship is on the skids, or you're single and looking for love, Ellen Kreidman shows you how to become a world-class lover..."

This book delivers on the first two promises, for reasons already explained by other reviewers. I believe, though, that the author should have paid more attention to the importance of being a challenge, rather than an ever-willing romantic. Lack of challenge is at least as deadly as lack of romance. I would suggest using these ideas once in a while, giving your partner a glimpse of what you can be, rather than constantly showering her with this approach (as the author seems to suggest).

As far as her "single looking for love" promise is concerned, which is what made me curious enough to read it, this book doesn't offer as much as other works that are exclusively focused on that particular subject. This book is targeted more for men who are already in relationships and trying to keep things lively; not so much for those wanting to attract new romantic partners. For that, I suggest:

                                            1. "How To Make Anyone Fall in Love With You" by Leil Lowndes, 2. "The Art of Seduction" by Robert Greene (if you dare!)
                                            3. "...The System" by Roy Valentine

The last one is especially recommended if you are the type who frequently hears "You're nice," soon followed by "I think of you as a friend."
Bottom line is, "Light Her Fire" is great (in moderation) for long-term relationships, IF your partner is already sincerely into you, needs more evidence of your romantic feelings for her, and you need ideas to accomplish that (but you probably won't get to that point in the first place simply by "being romantic" -- you have to "create attraction" before it is time to "be romantic"). If you are single, especially if you're the type of man who wants to attract new partners, you would be better advised to read something else; but this book is quite good if your circumstances call for it.

5 out of 5 stars A must for every man........2003-07-16

This is a masterpiece and should be read by every man. Since ancient times, men and women have their roles. Men the stronger one to hunt while women to nurture. As such, nature has allowed a women to "sense" a men whether he is a safe or dangerous to her while a man cannot get how a woman feels (a man can sense how other man feels).

The lack of this sense development leads to men not able to recognize how women (lovers, sibiling, colleagues) in their lives feel. They act, at times without realizing, in such a manner that is so distressing to the women.

This book totally changed my thinking. Kudos to the writer.

5 out of 5 stars Useful book for improving ALL relationships.......2002-04-08

Heard the taped version of Ellen Kreidman's LIGHT HER FIRE
and got a lot of useful advice from it (or at least I hope it is useful advice? laughing here--somewhat) . . . Kreidman, also author of the best-selling LIGHT HIS FIRE, presents many ideas about how to have a passionate, fun, exciting relationship . . . most if not all of what she writes seems to make a great deal of sense, and I believe it can apply to other situations as well; e.g., basic communication with friends, coworkers, children, etc.

Here were just a few of the many concepts that caught my attention:
We all have 10 vaults and 10 virtues.

When asked if you want to do something (such as go to the movies),
don't just say "OK." Respond, I'd love to go the movies with you!

Send personal notes, rather than preprinted greeting cards.

Ask what the other person wants and give it to her. If she tells you
without asking, make sure you note it!

Very romantic: A guy who has roses pout on his wife's bed for their
35th anniversary. (He has the thorns removed.) He tells her, "I've
always wanted to make love to you on a bed of roses."

Once a week, make a date night. Every three months, go away for
a weekend. Once a year, take a vacation with your spouse or
                                            significant other.

Women need something to look forward to; e.g., a trip in six weeks.
For men, it doesn't matter as much.

Plan a special evening at least once every few months. Tell your
partner that everything has been taken care of by you.

Give kids a hug whenever you get the chance. Kiss your partner
like you mean it; i.e., a 7-second kiss.

Don't ask, "What are you doing on Saturday?' Instead say, "I'd
like to go out with you Saturday night . . . are you busy?" Use
                                            "I" statements.

If you're together, hold your partner's hand, give her a kiss, put
your arm around her shoulder. Show the world you enjoy
                                            being alone with her.

Schedule a lunch date, and tell your partner you're putting it in
                                            your book.

Send a no occasion gift of flowers to her office.

Compliment your mate in front of another couple. It has three times
                                            the impact this way.

                                              Book Description

From Denali to Mt. Everest, from the Grand Canyon to the Alps, mountaineering legend Bradford Washburn has explored, climbed, mapped, and photographed some of the most beautiful and challenging landscapes on Earth.

Bradford Washburn: A Life of Exploration is the first book to detail Washburn's multi-faceted life and achievements. In his career of over forty years as Director of the Boston Museum of Science, Washburn wrote numerous books and articles, many for the National Geographic Society; created groundbreaking maps; and photographed breathtaking vistas.

Washburn is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of London's Royal Geographic Society, and an authority on Alaska's mountains and glaciers. A licensed pilot since 1934, he was an early advocate of air-dropping supplies to high-altitude mountain camps. He urged the use of high-frequency radio for communication between such camps, and researched wireless communications, aerial film, cold-weather survival techniques, and cold-weather search and rescue operations for the U.S. military.

Michael Sfraga's engaging biography recounts Washburn's adventures and accomplishments as a mountaineer, photographer, and scientist. In examining this rich life and work, Sfraga links Washburn's achievements to significant changes in our scientific and geographic understanding.

                                                    Book Description

James Joyce remains a mysterious figure, and yet his books concern his own life: his friends, loves, and, above all, the city of Dublin. Professor Chester Anderson here examines Joyce as one of the great modern writers, but also explores his life, visiting all the places where he lived and worked, and showing how closely these biographical details are related to Joyce's four great books: Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake. This unity of work and life is illuminated by passages quoted from these masterpieces and from Joyce's letters and other writings. The photographs of Joyce, his family, and surroundings cover every phase of his life.

I was looking for a biography on Joyce and was pleasantly surprised by this one. I picked it up for a very cheap price. Despite the fact that it is brief, it offers the basic outlines of the great man's life and is an excellent introductory work. There seems to be pictures on every page which was a wonderful side benefit as the visual images tell a story of their own. Before reading this, I really had no idea as to how autobiographical Joyce's fiction was. That so many of characters parallel people he knew was unexpected given the unbridled level of creativity he possessed. Upon finishing it, I immediately wanted to read more about his life in Trieste and Paris which I will do in the future.
