Customer Reviews:
Too general.......2006-11-11
I had a bad feeling before I even opened this book. I guess that had to do with the picture of the Maroon Bells on the cover - which are nowhere near Rocky Mountain National Park.
This book talks a lot about bringing pets into the park, obtaining permits, keeping mosquitos away, and what kind of camper I should buy. To me, this is pretty useless information. I need maps and route descriptions for day hikes. This book devotes less than 30 pages to that subject.
I have a camper, I know what bug spray is used for and I don't take pets with me on hikes. If you've never been outdoors, there may be some useful information here, but it seems like common knowledge to me.
Don't waste your money!!.......2004-03-14
This book is a dissappointment. Perhaps it has some value for hickers but not for the common visitor. Much better information is available in the web.
Everything I needed to plan my trip to the Rockies...........2003-08-21
was made simple with the use of this book. Among the sections I found most useful were the trip-planning tips, park highlights, and details on a variety of activities. Whether you stay inside or outside the park, this guide offers ratings for everything ranging from hotels, to restaurants, and even attractions. This guide was all I needed for my week long trip to the Rockies!
Useful.......2001-09-30
A useful and compact guide, focused on Rocky Mountain National Park and the nearby towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. Practical tips. The chapters on day hikes included something for everyone -- trails ranging from 1/2 mile very easy trails to very difficult trails. The maps were a little difficult to read. A useful addition would be a fold-out color map.

Excellent.......1999-01-08
This is an extremely well-written book on a sadly neglected figure in American culture. The most popular newspaper columnist of his time, Adams made "Tinker to Evers to Chance" a national catchphrase and was mentor to George S. Kaufman, James Thurber and other distinguished humorists. I thought the research was particularly thorough--especially regarding the ancestry of Adams' second wife. And someone must have done a lot of work in musty libraries looking up all F.P.A.'s articles for now-forgotten magazines! I hope he got paid well. I would also single out the index for special praise.

Amazing Project By Middle School Students.......2001-05-14
The project of reprinting this edition of Hawthorne's biography of Franklin Pierce was undertaken by students at the Brett Middle School in Tamworth, NH, under the guidance of their teacher, Brian Wiggin (OK, he's my cousin, but that does not diminish the validity of my praise for this project). In doing so the students had to delve into material on Pierce outside of the original text.
They did a most impressive job. For one, this was not one of Hawthorne's masterpieces. His prose is extremely bloated and garrulous. How these middle school students waded through it is a miracle. Two, this book, which was essentially a campaign pamphlet from the 19th century, does offer modern readers some fresh, even though biased insights on Pierce, who is considered one of our worst presidents by many historians. It is quite clear that Pierce neither sought nor desired the position, and was ill-prepared to handle the imminent breakup of the nation he loved.
The best part of the book is the excerpt from Pierce's journal he kept during the Mexican War. Only U.S. Grant's Memoirs contain more and better first-hand recollections of that conflict. Grant wrote his nearly 40 years after the war, while Pierce's were written during the war, so it is quite enlightening to compare the two.
A definitive evaluation of Pierce as a man and as a president, and it is quite damning, is in volume two of Allan Nevins's eight volume work, "Ordeal of the Union." No comprehensive biography of Pierce exists which bridges the gap between Hawthorne's friendly hagiography and Nevins's portrayal of Pierce as weak, lacking conviction, and of small character. Certainly Pierce occupied the White House in a definitive time in our nation's history. Someday a competent historian will undertake the task of writing a balanced biography of Pierce and his administration's role in either delaying or fomenting the Civil War. If the publication of Hawthorne's book has illustrated this need, then the Brett School project was, indeed, quite successful.
Hawthorne hits the Campaign Trail.......1999-11-30
Imagine, if you will, Martin Scorsese directing a half-hour biographical sketch of George W. Bush. What would that be like? I suspect it would the the year 2000 equivelent of this 19th Century book.
Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of 'The Scarlet Letter' and 'The Marble Fawn', was a friend of Franklin Pierce. So much so that he agreed to write the future president's campaign biography in 1852. Here we have an interesting relationship between a man considered by many to be one of the country's greatest men of letters and a man considered by many to be among its worst presidents. What does Hawthorne say about Pierce? It is pretty much standard fair for an antebellum election, and of course it is quite lauditory. But, how many candidates could recruit a writer of Hawthorne's stature to write his campaign literature.
Please remember this is a campaign biography. Its purpose is to help get Pierce elected - to put him forward as the best option (over old Fuss and Feathers Winfield Scott) in 1852. It is a product of its times and an amazing read, but not much of a biography by today's standards. If you want an analysis of the personality and presidency of Franklin Pierce you should look elsewere.
A ONE-SIDED VIEW.......1999-09-30
AFTER READING THIS BOOK YOUR IMPRESSION IS FRANKLIN PIERCE IS THE GREATEST PRESIDENT EVER. THIS BOOK IS VERY ONE-SIDED. I WONDER WHAT THE AUTHOR RESEARCHED: NOT PIERCE.

Patterns of abuse.......2001-02-28
For me, this book showed clearly that it is children who are abused (sexually or emotionally) who are most vulnerable, as adults, to suffer similar abuse again--and remain silent. Unfortunately, I know many similar stories of sexual abuse by clergy and counselors who abused power over while pretending to serve those in their care. An example is a psychiatrist in a West European country, running an isolated clinic for women with psychosomatic problems, and "helping" his patients by forcing them into sex!
The most horrible part is that, in all the cases I know, the victims of abuse called for help many, many times before anyone even believed their stories. It is the failure to find even a single suitably "enlightened witness" (in the words of Swiss psychiatrist Alice Miller) that in the end shocks me more than the instance of abuse. (Don't we all suspect that an abuser like Fr. Frank was himself victimized as a child?)
It seemed to me that Fr. Frank's supervisor was also an abuser: he was hardly likely to have reported Fr. Frank. And also Fr. Stamp, before representing Sister Yvonne, had perpetrated sexual abuses on children... The web of abuse is very vast; many people in the clergy have a stake in keeping victims silenced.
Sister Yvonne was deeply troubled that so few people believed and supported her when she finally told the story that had caused her to lose spirituality and optimism. I believe her; I know that her story needs retelling many times before healing can occur. It is for us to listen, again and again, even when the listening hurts us or the story seems old. This is the least we can do to break the pattern of abuse.
For anyone with a similar history, I can recommend the books of Anne Wilson Schaef and those of Alice Miller (in translation from the Swiss German). For the Catholic Church, I wonder when it will notice the harm done in its treatment of women and children...
Why did the cannibal want to eat his wife anyway?.......2000-11-22
If we indeed believe that people "called" to religious service should strive to be paragons of moral vigilance, reading this book will lead one to inescapably conclude that the wrong person, in this case, was compelled to give up their religious responsibilities, in favor of letting a church retain a vain glorious womanizer as priest.
The "cannibal" in this instance -- a priest who sexually and emotionally abused author, Yvonne Maes -- is still a so-called "man of God" while his victim is no longer a nun. Out of an apparent jealous need to squelch whatever in her noble service record reflects negatively on his deficiencies as a priest, Fr. Frank declares his sexual passion for Sister Yvonne, rapes her and then snidely belittles her protests until she is silenced into dazed compliance for a time.
When she finally emerges from years of depressed submission to Fr. Frank's misogynistic take on "God's will" for them, Yvonne next suffers secondary abuse from a kangaroo ecclesiastical court, only convened to respond to her complaints in a proscribed and condescending way. (And fancy finding out later that the bishop acting as the diocesan equivalent of a district attorney is himself a sexual predator)
The charade of justice includes one in-court confrontation between Yvonne and her former tormentor that is most awkward and wrenching for having been played out before moral arbiters who are themselves as much in conflict with their own sexuality as the nun and priest on trial. The priest admits he broke his vows of celibacy, but remains oblivious to the damage he did to Yvonne as a human being and colleague in religious service. For him, ultimate accountability is only an issue of admitting to a moral lapse, receiving absolution and continuing on as a priest. While Yvonne, who tried to take a moral stand, in exposing the abuse done to her leaves the church that failed to back her in that stand.
When I was eight years old, I saw the movie "Song of Bernadette" and became enchanted with the idea of becoming a nun. But after reading Yvonne's heart-rending memoir, I know that as long as the Church retains these wolves in sheep's clothing who call themselves priests, I'd rather take my chances walking down a blind alley at 2 A.M. in a drug-infested part of town than play guessing games with wondering who's really a good priest and who's not!
The Cannibal's Wife.......2000-08-05
I don't generally like nonfiction/biography books, but The Cannibal's Wife is a sensitive, moving read. I only gave it 4 stars because the subject matter made me, well, disturbed. Nevertheless, I recommend it highly. Sometimes we need to be disturbed.

Prepublication endorsement.......1999-07-09
The Cannibal's Wife is a searing, self-revealing, and frightening book. On a personal level, it is about sadomasochism, gender asymmetry, and abuse of power. On a social level, it is about institutional blindness and complicity. It is ironic that the church may be one of the last locations in which sexual harassment can be practiced without serious repercussion. It is a riveting read.

Old Sailor.......2007-07-27
Not quite what I expected. Some of the diagrams were difficult to follow. Some of the animated on-line knot sites were more useful.
Not "Complete" But Good.......2007-02-02
Very user friendly. For someone just getting into decorative knot tying, this book, although far from "Complete", gives you enough variety to whet your appetite for more. The instructions are easy to follow, and the diagrams are extremely helpful. Practice these knots to get the techniques down, and then you'll be ready for something a bit more comprehensive.
Outstanding tutorial.......2006-08-25
Clean, easy-to-understand illustrations make this book perfect for those who want to learn to tie these beautiful knots.
Awesome How-to's.......2005-10-23
This book is written by a member of the International Guild of Knot Tiers and is quite extensive. Not only does it give the basics of knot tieing but it moves into the the more advanced portions in later parts of the book. Very good images make tieing the knots very easy, but as always skill comes with practice. Excellent book for the beginner.
A timeless resource.......2005-10-11
This is the first book I reach for when I begin a rope working project. If you are a dedicated seaman, this should be one of your collection of books on knot tying. If you are just a hobbyist, this is the only book you will need.

Customer Reviews:
As a new Strait fan, I enjoyed this book very much........2005-10-26
Some of the information in this book I have seen elsewhere, but some was new and interesting. It's nice to have so much about Mr. Strait in one concise book. I liked his music before I knew who he was or that he was the one singing so many of the songs I liked on the radio. I know he is a very private person, and doesn't give out many interviews. Yet I didn't feel like the book pried too much, or that I was reading speculation or gossip. Much of the facts are from news already in print and stories from people who knew him only casually. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to any new Strait fan, or even an old one.
A Real Legend In Country Music.......2000-06-04
I cannot say enough about this book,George is my all time favorite and the book says it all.How George got started and how he kept on going even after the death of his daughter,it had to be so hard for this man to sing some of the songs he does,George to me is real country and I am so glad I purchased this book.
I love George Strait, so when I saw this book I got it........1999-09-14
It is so hard to find memoribilia of George Strait, so when I saw this book I knew I had to have it. The only way you can get other stuff of his is to join his fan club, and that is expensive after awhile.
I loved the book as much as I love George!!!!!!!!!.......1998-09-30
I thought the book was very interesting. At times it is dry reading but it was very factual and I learned alot about George.
IT WAS HORRIBLE.......1998-09-23
This book is a complete and total embarrassment to anyone who, like myself, personally knows George. Half of the content is pure filth, while the rest is easily available in the box-set and/or in some of the CD covers.

Book Description
Squire Terence and Sir Gawain are off questing again, but this time their journey is overshadowed by their ultimate destination: Gawain is to meet up with the Green Knight in a contest that could easily lead to Gawain's death. Along the way the two have a slew of hair-raising adventures and encounter the usual odd assortment of characters, including the plucky Lady Eileen. Sparks instantly fly between Terence and Eileen as she joins the squire and his knight on their travels. As they weave their way between the world of men and the Other World, Gawain and Terence discover much about themselves. The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady is the sequel to Gerald Morris's debut book, The Squire's Tale, about which the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books raved, "This Arthurian road trip will have readers wondering why there aren't more books like this one and hoping that Morris will do it again." And so he has.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful Retelling!.......2007-08-03
I borrowed The Squire, His Knight and His Lady from my public library. This is a wonderful book! I like it very much because it is based off of Arthurian Legends, but goes into greater detail about each of the characters and their own challenges and personalities. I read this before I read The Squire's Tale, which is book one, because I was unaware that it was a series, but was satisfied enough to read it in backwards order. It would have been all the more exciting, however, to read it in the right order. I am still reading The Squire's Tale, have the next book waiting, and hope to find the next few books at my library as well. It might not be the most fast-paced book, but still I enjoyed it very much.
The main character is Terence, who becomes squire to Sir Gawain, one of King Arthur's knights. It also involves several battles, and lovely Ladies. I really did like this book a lot.
Sassy characters and a new adventure around every corner!.......2007-04-03
After reading one book by author Gerald Morris, we were addicted! Now my husband (43), my son (12), and myself (37) are fighting over every book in the Squire's Tale series that we can get our hands on! We bought this book because we heard it was "good literature." We had no idea HOW good until we read it. It is clever, witty, sarcastic, adventurous, and inspirational! My husband laughed so hard he cried! It is a very entertaining retelling of the King Arthur stories and Canterbury Tales, complete with knights, castles, princesses, magic, fairies, herbs with healing powers, and quests! The characters as sassy and full of spunk, and there is a new adventure around every corner. We recommended these books to our local library, some of the librarians read one of the books, and they ended up ordering a bunch of the books from The Squire's Tales series for the library. (This book is the seventh in the series but, personally, it's my favorite. My husband and son each have other favorites from this series, though, so you'll want to read them all.) It is easy to recommend such a charming and entertaining book!
Yet ANOTHER Book to Get Lost In!!! jmeascsKeinnon .......2006-12-29
The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady is a good book. O.K, it's a great book. FINE!!! I'll admit it! It's one of the best books I've ever read!
Starting with a deadly challenge from an other-worldly knight, the book takes off on a series of cliff-hanging medieval adventures. In this book you'll enter a totally new world, brimming full of enchantments, magic, dimwits and more! The characters are interesting, witty and realistic. Although there's some romance in the end, this is a tale any one from 10-101 can read and enjoy. A sequel to The Squire's Tale, The Squire, His Knight and His Lady is a GREAT book to get lost in!
GREAT!!!!!!.......2005-01-30
I am a King Arthur, And his knights of course, FREAK!! With this book I couldn't put it down! I really enjoy the twist that Gerald Morris put on Gawain. Terence and Eileen are the perfect couple and are both fun to read about. I didn't really like the way he portrayed Lancelot, but I really favor him, cause he is my favorite. Of coarse other charecters that he portrayed extremly well, ALMOST made up for it.Over all he did a great job with this tale that spins off A Squire's Tale.
Can't wait to read the next book!
Pretty good.......2003-09-13
This book is really funny. It only reminded me a little of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, though I have heard it called almost the same. The style of writing is extremely funny, and anyone looking for a similar style of writing should read P.C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles and Sorcery & Cecelia.
The characters were well done, and I found the attitude towards Guinevere, French Knights and Lancelot very funny. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Book Description
`Very fine collection of essays - a rich feast of scholarship with many discoveries and new interpretations of greatest value for Anglo-Saxon history.' SPECULUMSt Cuthbert is known to many as the the saintly bishop of Holy Island inthe 7th century, but he was also a figure of great political and territorial power. The book is divided into four sections, each dealing with different aspects of Cuthbert and his milieu. Among the topics investigated are the early Livesof the Saint, two by Bede himself, and his cult; Lindisfarne, its scriptorium and of course the famous Gospels; the sumptuous treasures gathered round the coffin, such as a portable altar and elaborately-worked silks, many of which are still preserved at Durham; and St Cuthbert's community at Chester-le-Street and Durham.Contributors: J.
