Book Description
Palynology, the science of fossil and recent spores/pollen grains, is of high importance, both in many pure and applied fields of the natural sciences (e.g. in botany, geology, climatology, archeology and medicine). It is not only an auxiliary science, but can certainly stand for itself. The "classical" palynology subjects, pollen morphology and systematics, are at present influenced by many modern approaches, e.g. from cell biology, analytical electron microscopy, morphometry, up to com- puter-aided-design of threedimensional reconstruction. In recent years fascinating informations have come to light, and new insights have given rise to changing scientific concepts. During the XIV International Botanical Congress, held in Berlin in 1987, a symposium was devoted to important topics of (actuo)palynology. Nine of its innovative, major contributions are presented in this volume. They cover the comparative morphology and the systematic/evolutionary significance of pollen/spores in critical taxa, aspects of pollen development (cytoskeleton), the substructure of sporopollenin, homologies between wall strata of ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms, and important (but so far underrated) physical aspects of harmomegathy and pollen transport (fluid versus solid mechanics).

Book Description
The author and protagonist of this impressive narrative is a man who did not allow his handicap and human cruelty silence the voice of his intelligence and sensitivity. Rubén Gallego was born in the Kremlin clinic in Moscow with his twin brother; the first baby passed away a few days later. The second, Rubén, affected with cerebral paralysis, lived with his mother locked up in a hospital for a year and a half. Soon he was taken away and his mother was told he was dead. This is the story of his childhood and youth, of his survival as a presumed orphan in sinister orphanages and secret asylums.

Book Description
Stretching the imagination with creative color play lies at the heart of this fun-filled, results-oriented guide to producing more striking quilts. A gallery of over seventy lusciously colored quilts illustrates the author's techniques for choosing colors. Sample fabric arrangements make color concepts easy to understand; color scales show the variations of pure hues, tints, shades, and tones and how they affect the mood of a quilt.
Customer Reviews:
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COLORS.......2007-03-08
This product gives us the experience in the use of fabrics and colors in quilts.
I'm a scrapper, not a quilter.......2006-01-24
Regardless, I found the book fascinating. It uses the Ives color wheel, rather than the traditional red/blue/yellow wheel. It is clear and concise in its color theory, spending most of the pages in giving examples of color combinations. It also includes a gallery of gorgeous quilts to increase understanding of what the correct color choice can do for a piece of art.
I used this book as the basis for a scrapbooking class, and held thirty women in thrall. A number of them asked me to repeat the SAME talk, while the rest were ready for more information. This convinces me that the book, though great for quilters I imagine, is wonderful for anybody interested in color and, well, colorplay.
beautiful book .......2005-07-20
This is a lovely book~ Joen Wolfrom begins with her magical color book and progresses to Visual Dance ~ and now she has presented this book on color.. one builds on the next.. all lovely books to learn color from nature and use it in quilts.
All are lovely books! And now C T Publishing has taken the colors from this latest book Color Play and made a portable collection of color cards ( like a color wheel ) to carry along with you when you are picking out fabric.. so handy !
Buy any of these books by Joen Wolfrom it will make your color choices so much better, so much easier.
Whilst a tremendously colourful book..........2005-04-15
no novel ways of combining different-coloured fabrics (other than shown in the very few photographs) are presented . The 3-in-1 color cards pack by this author is preferable due to its portability.
Terrific Book!.......2005-02-03
I can't add anything more than was already posted!! It is true "eye-candy" for the Quilter's (Artist's) soul! :o)
5 star worthy

Customer Reviews:
Balanced between reality and optimism.......2003-01-31
Reading this book affirmed for me that we were doing the right thing by not adopting an infant. This book is chocked full of in-your-face warnings, but also celebrates your choice to adopt. Very informative. Easy to read writing voice. Great buy! :) I would also reccomend Waiting for You: An Heirloom Adoption Journal for My Future Child. It is an expectancy journal that works well with older children. If you're adopting, God Bless your adoption journey!
Maskew gives good suggestions and explanations.......2001-08-06
I have adopted an African seven year old and I found Trish Maskew's book very very helpful, together with Adopting the Hurt Child you can be prepared for anything.
What her book had which I haven't seen in ANY OTHER adoption book is a CLEAR explanation of the different types of hepatitis B and other illness/test results (there are different positives which mean different things). None of my adoption counselors understood this and I gave them my copy of the book when I was through with it. I was worried about positives but realized there is a big difference between "exposure" and actually having the disease.
For that reason, I'd recommend her book to anyone adopting kids with health problems. Trish is also online on an older-child mailing list and she frequently answers questions there. A very wise, practical, clear-writing woman!
Excellent resource.......2000-09-06
I read this as we were matched with a sibling pair - 10 and 12 yr olds and it was a godsend! We're 3 months into the adoption, this book was on the mark so many, many times! It is excellent and I've been reading many books on adoption - this one addressed what we needed - older children - not infants, not international. I highly recommend it to anyone involved. Some of the info may scare you, but it's worth knowing!
Informative and Honest.......2000-07-24
This book was purchased along with Adopting The Hurt Child byKeck. My husband and I are planning on adopting older siblings, andwe were looking for resources to prepare us as much as possible. Unlike Keck trying to make a statement about the system our children find themselves mixed up in, Trish Maskew provides a realistic approach to the actual adoption and parenting of older children. She gave us a realistic perspective on the children in a positive way. She informs you of many possibilities in a way which does not scare you into changing your mind. Surprisingly, after having read her book, we are more determined that this is what we want to do. We also feel confident that we are fundamentally educated and prepared. She provides many up-to-date resources in Appendix form, and also gives real-life examples of how to make a not-so good situation better. She provides numerous examples of problem solving ideas, along with very informative reference information about many of the problems Our children face. Many of her comments about sensitive comments people can make hit home with me, and I appreciated her down-to-earth language. I found this book a very easy read, and finished it in a couple of hours. I highlighted numerous points throughout her book to share with my husband. I also noted numerous suggestions she makes for us during the journey to adoption. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this book to anybody considering adopting older children. I am extremely glad that I found her book amist the scarce up-to-date resources.
A must read - realistic but positive.......2000-03-15
I love this book. I have 6 kids, 2 born to me and 4 older child adoptions. One set of sibs came home three years ago, the other last August. This books makes me laugh and cry at the same time. I read so many stories that were just like mine - and I've never found this anywhere else. The book is well organized and covers at least briefly almost any topic that could come up during an older child adoption. The balance betweeen domestic and international experiences is also helpful, as info on international older child adoptions is really scarce. The author also does an excellent job describing and putting into realistic perspective the emotional issues these kids come with - although I think a lot of the material is probably most relevant to school aged children as opposed to toddlers and preschoolers. In my opinion, throughout her book she remains positive and encouraging. I don't understand the previous reviewer's comment that this book is depressing - far from it to me. It was inspiring and realistic, but also reinforced the truth that the joys of parenting older adopted children are beyond measure. Seeing a hurt child heal and truely smile with joy from the bottom of her soul, perhaps for the first time in years, is an experience that makes all others pale. Having this book available is like having a personal coach at your side. Thank you Trish Maskew!
Book Description
A House of Her Own is the first full-length biography of the American Surrealist painter Kay Sage. Born in 1898 to wealthy American parents in upstate New York, Sage spent most of her childhood and young adult years in Italy and France. In 1937 she moved to Paris, where she became a member of the Surrealist group surrounding André Breton. She returned to the United States in 1940, settling in Woodbury, Connecticut. Her most productive years as an artist extended from roughly 1938 through the late 1950s, when her health began to deteriorate and she withdrew gradually from social contact. She stopped working on her oil paintings in 1958 but continued to forge her increasingly nihilistic poems until she shot herself in the heart in January 1963.
Along with her eloquent chronicle of Sage’s life, Judith D. Suther presents subtle, revelatory views of Sage’s artistic accomplishments. She takes us into the artist’s elegant, dreamlike paintings, connecting them to Sage’s complex inner life and to the artistic and intellectual worlds in which she moved. Suther also shows how the raw language and iconoclastic themes of Sage’s poetic works were related to Sage’s lifelong revolt against social and artistic convention.

Suther Delivers on Multiple Fronts.......2006-08-09
If you're not into art, namely the movement known as surrealism, I'm not sure if you'd like this book; perhaps you would. This biography is about the bizarre life of early 20th century American surrealist oil painter Kay Sage. In describing Sage's life, author Judith Suther delves into feminist issues, aspects of European and American artists during the WWII era, privilege, and a not too shabby psycho-analysis of Sage's work and surrealism overall: in fact you might like this book if you're not into surrealist art, but in that case it would be a very esoteric book I imagine.
If, on the other hand, you're into art, and are not put off by surrealism, then you'll probably like this book a lot. I did. It's well represented by:
A) Presenting a passable biography of artist Kay Sage.
B) Presenting a passable psycho-analysis of Kay Sage's art.
C) Exploring contemporary feminist issues in the context of an early 20th century woman artist, who achieved some acclaim in a predominately male dominated art world.
D) Presenting fairly legible B&W and color plates of Sage's interesting art.
E) Presenting a passable history and definition of the surrealist school of art, and its transalantic American shift during WWII.
These aspects, not necessarily in this order, made the book enjoyable. Admittedly, I paint, and I place substantial significance on the philosophy of art, especially on the sub-category surrealism. On the one extreme, if you are oriented toward these criteria, this book is highly recommended; on the other, it might be an interesting read about an obscure early 20th century senator's daughter turned princess turned surrealist artist. The fact that Sage drilled her heart out with a pearl handled .32 at the bitter end lends a Hemingway-esque twist to this pseudo-lonely artist's tale; she apparently was a brassy broad inside (revealed in her poetry, which is also showcased in the book), with the exterior of fine French antique: which Sage was not, she was a good to great American artist, an individualist, and a pioneer (of herself, as well as her genre of art). Some of her finest works look frankly into the abyss.
In the final analysis, what kind of artist Sage was is ambiguous. She was a surrealist, yet she wasn't quite. She followed this school of art, yet created her own trademark icons. She really seemed to create a unique niche of her own within a genre. There's an enigma here that isn't easily defined. Were her works powerful, or subtle? That's up to the interpreter to decide.
A Remarkable Achievement.......2003-10-24
About 25 years ago I bought a used edition of a fairly comprehensive history of surrealism. While looking for references to Yves Tanguy, my favorite artist, I saw a small, black and white reproduction of one of Sage's paintings and became equally intriqued by her work. There has never been a biography of Tanguy in English, so I was amazed and delighted when Philip Horowitz told me about this book. Judith Suther's research and writing would do any art historian proud. She has reconstructed Sage's fascinating, tragic life with remarkable detail and immediacy. I have only two minor reservations with this book. Suther adopt's some feminist art hstorians' cant that Sage has been denied due recognition because of her gender. But Tanguy himself is only somewhat better known-note the absence of even one English-language biography. My other reservation is the paucity of color illustrations. I know this book is from a university press and the attendant economics, but for the rather high price, there should be more color illos here. Still, I'm grateful for the miraculous existence of this invaluable book.
Kay Sage 'A House of Her Own' by Judith D. Slater.......2000-10-16
This isn't the saddest life story I've read, but it is sadness at a most unusual point in the scale of melancholy. Riddled with irony, too. Almost 50 years to the day after Andre Breton commented that Sage's work 'must have been done by a man' Sage was not even listed by name in the surrealist art catalogs and none of her work was to be found in galleries or museums. Only a couple of solo shows and one painting at the 1958 World's Fair. Being the wife of a major surrealist such as Yves Tanguy did not bolster Kay Sage's career in art to say the least. Sage was already well-schooled in art before she met Yves and she came from a wealthy family. The images of her art shown in this book is well worth the money for the picures alone. It will show you 'unofficial personal surrealism' that Women and American Artists from all walks of life have had to face and overcome. Sage's work stands on it's own, yet the enigmatic energy of her ill-fated life and career are revealed in "A House Of Her Own".
The book has several illustrations of paintings, drawings, and early photos including interior/exterior photos of the home Sage and Tanguy shared in Woodbury, Connecticut.
For the Tanguy fans out there, this is a 'must read' book. Anyone that has sought out literature on the life of Yves Tanguy knows there isn't much to be found. A House Of Her Own reveals many details of a well-researched and authored biographer in Judith D. Suther.
