4 out of 5 stars The progressive domestic agenda of Lyndon Johnson.......2002-08-08

The Presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson was overshadowed by the assassination of John F. Kennedy that began it and the Vietnam War, which effectively ended it by persuading him not to seek reelection in 1968. This Cornerstones of Freedom volume looks at what LBJ would have wanted his legacy to be, "The Great Society." Leila M. Foster explains how Johnson was able to use his many years of political experience, the lull in the Cold War that gave the new president a chance to focus on domestic policy, and the country's need to regroup after Kennedy's assassination to push through his program. Johnson's Great Society followed in the footsteps of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and while FDR may be the father of modern "big government," LBJ's program probably had a greater effect on American society.

Foster explains how there was opposition to Johnson's plan to have the federal government involved in such a massive "government handout," but that Johnson ignored these critics and passed major legislation having to do with voting and other civil rights, health and school aid, programs like Head Start, VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), financial aid to economically depressed Appalachia, and community action programs throughout America. Foster focuses particularly on the Civil Rights Legislation, where Johnson demanded every American be guaranteed the right to vote and appointed the first African American, Thurgood Marshall, to be on the United States Supreme Court. However, the volume ends with the Vietnam War detracting Johnson from his domestic agenda and his death in 1973, just as Richard Nixon was beginning to dismantle many of the key elements of the Great Society.

The Cornerstones of Freedom series is an excellent collection of books for young readers that focuses on key events in American History, from the Alamo to Watergate. A lot of these topics are covered briefly in American History textbooks, but these volumes provide considerably more details along with historic photographs and illustrations. "The Great Society" has become almost a footnote to the Sixties, given the political assassinations, the rise of the counterculture, and the war in Vietnam. But Foster reminds us that there was a concerted attempt by an American president to fulfill the promise of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Reading this book was a nice reminder of that.

When he was 10 years old, the author watched as his brother Michael lost his mind. High on LSD and screaming uncontrollably because God was torturing him, the 14-year-old smashed everything in his bedroom, his feet red with blood from broken glass. Michael collected snakes and let them slither around his naked body; he beat Greg nearly senseless, then smashed his own forehead into a sharp branch in repentance; he stayed up all night, watching Christian television or "puzzling over his strange and cruel distance from God." Their parents, preoccupied by the ceaseless work that had taken them from a dirt-poor Virginia town to an affluent suburb that they really couldn't afford, thought drugs the problem and throwing Michael out the answer. Not until 1977, when he was 21, did they learn that he was an acute paranoid schizophrenic, so severely mentally ill that he probably would never be healed, although medication might control his behavior. Michael became increasingly dangerous, but could not be institutionalized against his will; when he set their house on fire in 1993, the father's reaction was relief: "This was the best thing that could have happened.... He'll be put away." He was, and, Bottoms acknowledges, "We've all found a peace without Michael that we're not willing to give up." There's no false sentiment in this unflinching memoir of a family that's alienated, instead of united, by tragedy: "We all hid from each other," Bottoms writes with characteristic candor. "We shared a space, a roof, nothing else." There is, however, tremendous sorrow for a blighted life and the havoc that it wrought. Bottoms's finely crafted prose offers no consolation or easy answers--simply emotional precision and the satisfaction of hard truth. --Wendy Smith

                                    Book Description

"My brother saw the face of God. You never recover from a trauma like that."

So begins Angelhead, a taut, powerful memoir of the madness and crime that rips a family apart.

"I didn't see God, of course, but I saw my brother seeing God; I saw how petrified he was, how convinced."

Set in Tidewater, Virginia, in the 1980s and early 1990s, Angelhead documents the violent, drug-addled, schizophrenic descent of the author's brother, Michael. Commencing with Michael's first psychotic break at age 14 -- high on acid, seeing God in his suburban bedroom window -- through a series of petty crimes, bizarre disappearances, and suicide attempts to the shocking crime that landed him in the psychiatric wing of a maximum security prison, Angelhead enables us to witness firsthand, as never before, the fragmenting of a mind and a family.

"I knew, still know, that he saw, in some form, His or Her or Its face."

Bottoms shows, in pitch-perfect prose and with great empathy and dramatic tension, the psychological decline of his brother as he becomes obsessed first with heavy metal music, martial arts, and the occult, and then with the more bizarre aspects of Christianity. We not only see the effects Michael's odd and increasingly violent behavior has on the people around him, but also come to understand how the author, now a successful writer and journalist, used the power of language and storytelling both to save himself and to forgive his brother. With the fast pace and seamless structure of the best crime writing and the moral sophistication and depth of our finest literature, Angelhead will challenge what we know about mental illness and its impact on us all. It is a brilliant work of unusual intensity.

"In his room he was having his first of many psychotic breaks. It came in the form of crippling guilt, ruthless introspection. He was Jesus being scolded by an angry Father. He wore sin, all sin, heavy as lead shackles. God made him look at himself and he was a stone with a minuscule heart."

                                    4 out of 5 stars Compassion?.......2007-10-22

Recently having read "angelhead" in a day by Greg Bottoms I found a few disheartening things.

I had seen this book many times an anticipated reading it, I had hoped it would have been similar to the account of "tell me I'm here" by Anne Deveson.

Instead it was a story showing the tragedy that strikes where there is no compassion or help given in a time of desperation.

Bottom's facts are clearly not researched. Although a good read for the story value I would not support taking his facts as good statistics as they are poorly researched:

""schizophrenics as a populace have a much higher instance of committing both murder and suicide (just during the writing of this book i have tallied six national news stories about paranoid schizophrenics committing homicide or multiple homicide and those mind you are only the ones making national news like the unabomber) violence against family is most common." -Greg Bottoms

If Bottoms had researched his facts he would not have based them merely on News reports he personally had seen during his time of writing his personal account.

with Homicide rates are typically quoted as per 100000 people per year in the USA.Where as murders by mentally ill are 55-60 per year.

                                    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/248841.stm

I feel Bottoms book should only be looked on as the perspective of one families experience with schizophrenia.

The family lacked compassion, Bottoms noted that they did nothing for a great deal of time assuming he was merely reacting to prolonged use of drugs (even that not being a motivating enough reason to get him help).Even once understood he had a mental illness the family did nothing to help the son even sending him to another state with a one way ticket and a bit of cash until he showed up starving several months later.

I feel the mother is the only one in the book who showed compassion towards her mentally ill son, who really tried. The youngest brother admitted he hated him and Bottoms stated he did deep down wish his brother with schizophrenia had died when he attempted suicide.

I give the book a good rating for story value, I feel a vast majority of his statistics are poorly researched but if You would like an account of how one family dealt then this is one of many stories to take into account.

4 out of 5 stars Dark and Disturbing.......2007-09-15

A harrowing tale of one family's suffering through their son's mental disorder (schizophrenia). Told from his brother's perspective, I found it fascinating, but sad. It was a quick read for me. I would recommend it if you are interested in how mental illness can disrupt an entire family, but there are no real answers here. Parts of it are disturbing.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Angelhead.......2007-07-24

Angelhead was a book that I would read over again.. It came from the heart. I wish I could express myself as well as Greg has done in this book about his brother. The story is powerful and well written. He has shared how mental illness affects the whole family.

4 out of 5 stars Disturbing and dramatic.......2007-05-30

I liked this book. The author and his family went through a lot. I can see the link between criminal statistics and the disease of the mind. It spills out within this family.

4 out of 5 stars very well written.......2006-03-02

My wife got this book for school and I happened to pick it up and read it before she did. While the story itself is rather depressing the insight given by Greg's story is enlighting. We have so far to go yet in truely helping people with mental and emotional needs, yet we continue to throw drugs at people and hope they will just go away. Awesome book!

Wow! I was very surprised. The techniques are simple but very effective. The photos of finished products are classy looking, and not overdone. The colors are subdued. Less is definitely more. The diagrams are very clear. The advice and recommendations are excellent. I've already tried a few of the techniques with great success. Highly recommended if you want to add that extra little something to make your garments stand out, but not look gaudy.

Beautiful edition. The book contains some interesting embellishments' ideas from vintage fashion, but on the whole it describes basic methods of embellishments and finishing garments, as bias binding, piping etc. There is interesting chapter about using bead work as garment trimming. I would say, it's a good guide for beginners in dressmaking.

4 out of 5 stars Well written book but skimped on some sections.......2006-05-16

I bought this book primarily for its section on passementrie but found a wealth of information on beading, bobbin embroidery and braiding. I noticed though that one of the braid samples, the 3-strand with a chevron pattern did not have illustrated or written instructions, which was disappointing as the traditional 3-strand weave, that we know through girl's pig tails, was documented in the book. Another disappointment was that the passementrie section had no pictures. Granted, Ms. Conlon's goal was to allow the reader to create their own designs but an example for a finished piece would have been helpful. It is a technique that's very hard to find material on and I thought this book would have filled that gap to an extent. Rouleau faggotting was a surprise treat and seems easy to recreate. The overall quality of the book is what I'd expect from Taunton press and worth buying. I just wish there was more 'eye candy'. This book could have easily been 200+ pages without tiring the reader with its lovely examples and well written instructions.

                                            Book Description

Gilbert Stuart was probably the most gifted American portraitist of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. He is best known for his "Athenaeum" portrait of George Washington, which is today a national icon. In this book, Dorinda Evans combines a wealth of original insights with revealing new documentation to present a long-needed, scholarly treatment of Stuart's life and influential work.

Evans begins by tracing Stuart's early years and artistic beginnings in Rhode Island. She follows him to London, where he rose to prominence among such artistic luminaries as Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. She then examines his career in the United States, where he became the favored portraitist for the country's leading citizens. In assessing Stuart's artistic importance, Evans argues that his 1796 "Athenaeum" portrait of Washington--the most recognized likeness of the president--was a landmark in the expression of contemporary ideas about moral strength. More generally, she shows that Stuart's painting reflected a genius for interpreting the sitter's personality and a growing awareness of painting's public role in conveying uplifting messages about social dignity and virtue. She challenges the view that his later paintings show a decline, revealing many as concerned with expressing the human soul in a fresh and naturalistic way.

Evans also explores Stuart's private life, discounting recent portrayals of him as an outcast and a confidence trickster. She concludes that his notoriously erratic behavior, which veered from prolonged lethargy to reckless activity and extravagance, was a sign of manic-depressive illness. Evans gathered information about Stuart from a wide variety of previously untapped sources, including unpublished interviews with the artist that shed new light on controversies over his portraits of Washington and Thomas Jefferson. The book presents not only Stuart's most famous pictures--including The Skater and his portraits of early American presidents--but also many paintings never before published. Meticulously researched, elegantly written, and richly illustrated, The Genius of Gilbert Stuart will become the standard account of one of America's most important early artists.
