5 out of 5 stars The real deal.......2005-02-18

This book is the real deal. Not for the faint at heart. Contains phenomenal information about the most beautiful beaches and waterfalls on the wildest coastline in California. If you are coming to Pt Reyes, you must have this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Soul-Filled Collection of Adventures.......2002-04-27

This book is fabulous. Don't expect a "walk in the park." This is a serious wilderness guide that includes beautiful trail and off-trail hikes. Arnot tells us much more than just trail markers - he speaks from the heart about the natural scenes that we pass. A must buy if you are exploring this little known gem of California.

    1 out of 5 stars Be Forewarned.......2001-05-02

Pt Reyes rangers told us that this book makes things seem too easy. We were happy to agree as we had just been rescued by helicopter at 11:30 pm from a small rocky cove, trapped by the incoming tide. The hike had been planned for months, tide tables checked, double checked, and confirmed with the park service that day. We just didn't go fast enough. (Rangers say lots of folks sprain ankles on that particular hike.)

If you decide to take any of these hikes (the one we took was beautiful) double check with the rangers when you get to the park (we didn't), make sure someone knows exactly where you're going (we're thankful we did), and make sure you're prepared for everything (we were, basically).

          Book Description

Children encounter dogs wherever they go: in the park, on the sidewalk, at their friends homes. Sometimes its love at first sight, on both sides-but not always. The right way for a child to approach a dog to ensure that the first connection is a complete success begins with this question to the owner: "May I pet your dog?" Using Harry the dachshund as a gentle guide, Stephanie Calmenson addresses this valuable yet overlooked topic with care and precision, and Jan Ormerods warm illustrations portray a wide variety of breeds and personalities and depict situations that are realistic but never scary. Unique and straightforward, this is the essential guide to bringing children and dogs together-for kids and parents alike.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting concept... very useful.......2007-09-06

A straightforward primer to show small children the safest way to meet and approach strange dogs. Although this doesn't provide much in the way of dramatic storytelling, it does offer very practical information, in a way that may appeal to kids. Ask the owners first; show the dog your hand and let them sniff it before you try petting them; pet dogs from the side, not over their heads; pay attention to warning signs like crouching or growling, and don't make direct eye contact with an angry or anxious dog. As a narrative, this is pretty clunky, but even if you only get one or two readings out of it, the information they impart will be very valuable. Good for parents, too! (ReadThatAgain!)

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2007-07-25

We got this book for our 3-year old daughter (who loved dogs) - and it has been wonderful. There are some great pointers in here about how to approach dogs so that they feel comfortable with you, and you are (consequently) safer interacting with them. She loves the book, and she puts the lessons in there to work with our dogs all the time.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be read to every preschooler & by everyone!.......2007-05-07

The number of children being bit by dogs is astronomical. This could be drastically reduced, by showing children (& adults) the right way to approach a dog. A child's only experience may be with a friendly dog, or her own dog. Many dogs see an unknown child running up & reaching out at them as a threat and become fearful &/or aggressive. Both responses can cause a dog to bite. Dog bites and attacks can leave lasting physical and emotional scars on a child. Please, read this to your toddler, to your kindergarten class, to any child you are in contact with. Tell everyone you know, that dog bites can be significantly reduced, IF when we see a dog, we know to STOP, ASK the owner if you can pet their dog & only then approach the dog in a non-threatening way. This book is an awesome tool to intruct this information.

As a beginner you must have this book. I bought it while taking a Jewelry I class. My classmates were totaly amazed at what I could do. They all started searching for their own copy. I found this book so helpful with techniques and tools, terms and meanings. It covers all the projects that a beginner would take in a class. I also own a copy of Tim McCreight's "The Complete Metalsmith." The small book. It's all that I have needed since I began. I've already made a handful of projects already. See my Pink Tourmaline ring in the user photos above. This book will never be a waste of time and money.

                      5 out of 5 stars Success and Learning-what a comination!.......2007-04-08

I completed the first two projects in this book in a weekend-beautiful rings. Wonderful projects with excellent instruction. I am a beginner and this made me feel so accomplished. I enjoy this book very much and will use it over and over!

5 out of 5 stars It will get you thinking.......2006-03-26

This book is another must have for everybody in the metalsmithing/jewelry art metal area of interest. Covers the tools in depth and also has a number of do it yourself tools and shop helps that once you use them. They will more than pay for the cost many times over. Track this one down if you have to. Clear and concise descriptions, great photo's. I own it and refer to it a lot.It will also get you to start thinking about what other tools or tooling you can make in your shop.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book to get started!.......2006-01-31

I just thumbed through this book in the store and decided to grab it because of the wide scope of information it covered. When I got it home, I read through it more attentively and found a wealth of information on how to get started making unique and remarkable jewelry, well beyond stringing beads! The author covers first the tools, even ways to make your own to start out with to save on start up costs. He then goes into materials. Then starts with an introduction into some very basic processes (like soldering, polishing, etc.). And from then on, introduces techniques and tricks in the form of creative projects. He even talks a bit about the design process and gives tips on things that have helped him (keeping a design journal and a scrapbook of pieces that inspire you).

Fabulous book! I would recommend it as a perfect starting point to anyone looking to begin artisan jewelry making!

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-04-22

This book is really excellent for a beginner (and others) - it shows complete jewellery making projects (wearable jewellery!) and all the steps necessary to make them, with lots of pictures, everything well explained.

                          Book Description

This book examines the literature on red clover since about 1985. In each of the 17 chapters, an effort was made to summarize the earlier literature and to integrate the recent findings into this background. The timing is appropriate with the present interest in sustainable agriculture, in which red clover was so prominent in the past. This is the first book to be published which deals solely with this important forage species.
Audience: Primarily scientists and scientifically trained technicians who will appreciate an up-to-date summary on red clover.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Guide for Parents.......2007-09-19

Having read a number of books on parenting, this book was found to be the most inspiring in terms of causing us to reach to God. As Christians we are called to walk by faith in every area of our lives. This book shows us how to be loving and strategic in our parenting whilst reaching to God in faith believing for our children also to walk with Him.

                                5 out of 5 stars Teenagers.......2007-08-09

Reading parenting books takes time of which parents have little. This book has been encouraging and convicting- well worth the time. I highly recommend Age of Opportunity to any parent!

                                GREAT BOOK.
If you enjoyed "Shepherding a Child's Heart" and desire to train your children to be thoughtful and caring of others in their heart - not just training behavior - you will love this book. It looks at the great opportunity we have in the teenage years to help them see their self-centeredness and trust in Christ to be transformed.

5 out of 5 stars Get to the heart of the matter.......2007-01-30

This is the best book I've read on parenting teens from a Biblical perspective. Tripp helps parents think about what the heart issues are, not just control the external behaviors. If you're interested in taking the time to use the trials of life to point your child to the gospel of Christ, this book is for you.

                                5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-01-19

As a young pastor who does not have any teenagers of my own, this book has been a great resource to hand out to parents. Tripp's book has really helped open many of our parents' eyes to the wonderful opportunity for discipleship through the teenage years.

Ricardo's text speaks for itself and is truly a classic. In Sraffa's careful and patient hands, this great work finds an editor who is the peer of its author. This is extraordinary value for money - this is a 6-star book.

The USA Patriot Act may be the most complex and controversial federal statute in American history, argued to undercut American civil liberties in countless ways, including a dramatic extension of domestic surveillance. Under this act and new FBI guidelines, libraries and bookstores--long subject to FBI surveillance--are more vulnerable than ever before. This timely book addresses the important topics of:

                                • The FBI's Library Awareness Program
                                • The passage and general provisions of the Patriot Act

This is a thorough history and expose of the fine print in the Patriot Act, with the consequences for libraries, librarians and students in universities. The author details the history of the earlier attempts in this line, such as the FBI's Library Awareness Program, which were shot down, but obviously 9/11 gave some people the green light to try again.

                                      Book Description

Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, is the most important Elizabethan woman writer and patron outside the royal family. By astute use of the genres permitted to women, she supported the Protestant cause, introduced continental literary genres, expanded opportunities for later women writers, and influenced seventeenth-century lyric and drama by such writers as John Donne, George Herbert, Mary Wroth, and William Shakespeare. This scholarly edition in two volumes is the first to include all her extant works: Volume I prints her three original poems, the disputed `Dolefull Lay of Clorinda', her translations from Petrarch, Mornay, and Garnier, and all her known letters. Volume II contains her metrical paraphrases of Psalms 44-150. The edition also provides a biographical introduction, discussion of her sources and methods of composition, textual annotation, and a detailed commentary.

                                      Book Description

Brother Men is the first published collection of private letters of Edgar Rice Burroughs, the phenomenally successful author of adventure, fantasy, and science fiction tales, including the Tarzan series. The correspondence presented here is Burroughs’s decades-long exchange with Herbert T. Weston, the maternal great-grandfather of this volume’s editor, Matt Cohen. The trove of correspondence Cohen discovered unexpectedly during a visit home includes hundreds of items—letters, photographs, telegrams, postcards, and illustrations—spanning from 1903 to 1945. Since Weston kept carbon copies of his own letters, the material documents a lifelong friendship that had begun in the 1890s, when the two men met in military school. In these letters, Burroughs and Weston discuss their experiences of family, work, war, disease and health, sports, and new technology over a period spanning two world wars, the Great Depression, and widespread political change. Their exchanges provide a window into the personal writings of the legendary creator of Tarzan and reveal Burroughs’s ideas about race, nation, and what it meant to be a man in early-twentieth-century America.

The Burroughs-Weston letters trace a fascinating personal and business relationship that evolved as the two men and their wives embarked on joint capital ventures, traveled frequently, and navigated the difficult waters of child-rearing, divorce, and aging. Brother Men includes never-before-published images, annotations, and a critical introduction in which Cohen explores the significance of the sustained, emotional male friendship evident in the letters. Rich with insights related to visual culture and media technologies, consumerism, the history of the family, the history of authorship and readership, and the development of the West, these letters make it clear that Tarzan was only one small part of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s broad engagement with modern culture.

3 out of 5 stars A window into friendship and life.......2005-10-30

I picked up Brother Men not knowing what to expect, but figuring it would be a quick and amusing read. What I found was a window into life as it was passing for Weston and Burroughs, not as it was remembered. This collection of letters spans the birth of two generations, two World Wars, and the trials of profit and loss. The conversation is friendly, comic, insightful, and random! At times I had to remember that the characters were real and that the letters existed. I actually was sad to end the book knowing that in a few years after the last letter this friendship would end. I think the book is great if you are a Burroughs fan, interested in history, or just enjoy how human relationships evolve. I highly suggest reading the introduction BEFORE and AFTER reading the letters.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Taxonomy Of A Friendship.......2005-10-28

Reading the personal correspondence of the great US author Edgar Rice Burroughs, you feel like a voyeur, for his detail is almost astounding and sometimes you are taken back to a day far removed from our crazily sped up world.

His correspondence with his prep school pal Herbert Weston isn't especially shocking, but it's affectionate, like looking into an old yearbook and seeing the silly inscriptions. It sounds to me as though they kept up writing to each other for nearly thirty years just for old times sake. If you were looking, as I was, to get more insight into Burroughs' writing process, you're out of luck; mostly it's him trying to cheer up Weston, whose business goes through rough times, and also, rather charmingly, he tries not to show off too much when the success of the TARZAN and JOHN CARTER novels makes him into a world famous personality--and a whole city, Tarzana, named after his creation. Meanwhile in Nebraska Weston just bumbles along, stumbling across "Ed"'s name constantly whenever he picks up the newspaper or reads a magazine at the barber shop. The most exciting part of the whole book comes when Weston proposes to buy "Ed" a Lincoln in Nebraska and drive it out to Tarzana--this scheme will save Ed about 1,000 in sales tax. I won't give away the spoilers, you'll have to read the book yourself to see what happens.

Outside of the Lincoln caper, the only thing that really lights a fire under Weston's ass is the death of Teddy Roosevelt, a lion among men I suppose. It was like the way some people here in the 21st century cried when Reagan died. Also intriguing is the unfolding account of the ways both men coped with the influenza epidemic of 1918-19, and how they quarrelled and didn't speak for ten years, then started writing again before the 2nd World War. Time speeds on by, doesn't it?

Editor Matt Cohen provides helpful and informative notes; the volume is nicely illustrated with vintage photos of both families. Cohenis the great-grandson of Weston and relates, amusingly, the story that he came home from grad school and told his grandma that he was looking into cases of emotional and homosocial friendship between American men of 100 years ago and out of the blue she said, "Well then, why don't you go up to the attic and pore through Dad's old letters from Edgar Rice Burroughs?" Talk about buried treasure! The Westons had kept these letters in perfect condition, and happily enough when it came to it, young Cohen found that the Burroughs estate was willing to cooperate fully.

                                      Book Description

The Murphy book gives strong emphasis to completeness, conciseness, consideration, concreteness, clearness, courteousness, and correctness in business communication. These "seven Cs" guide student-readers to choose the content and style that best fits the purpose and recipient of any given message. Pedagogically rich, most chapters in this paperback text include checklists, mini-cases and problems, "Communication Probe" boxes which summarize related research, and sidenotes that isolate significant points that should not be missed. Two new chapters are devoted to ethics and technology respectively.

                                            Book Description

This volume offers a rich sampling of correspondence from the Dutch Immigrant Letter Collection at Calvin College. Sent from immigrants to friends and family in the Netherlands, the letters describe the writers' new lives and the daily experiences of becoming American.

"Dutch American Voices is a wonderful scrapbook that should be a part of every library in the Midwest and every home of those Americans of Dutch ancestry. Brinks should be commended not only for this volume but also for a lifetime of collecting and preserving this precious legacy in the Dutch Immigrant Letter Collection at Calvin College. His work is a labor of love as well as a service to scholarship."--Michigan History Magazine
