If you love wildflowers and live in the D.C. area get it!.......1998-07-14

This book is a neccesity for anyone looking for fantastic wild flower sites within driving distance of the D.C./Baltimore area. It is co-written by Chris Fleming, field botanist with the Maryland Natural Heritage Program and popular teacher of Wild Flower I.D. at the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, MD. Each site is described by the wildflowers you can expect to see in every season and directions are given as well as any info needed about gaining access to the site. Learn where to see one of the largest stands of Giant-flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) you will ever see or visit the only known site in Maryland to observe the beautiful Fringed Gentian (Gentiana crinita). This book will keep you busy for many weekends of wild flower exploration.

Delightful and full of insight on God's handiwork.......2005-05-03

Come and walk through "fields of wonder" in MEET ME IN THE MEADOW, 36 short essays by Deborah Hedstrom-Page about wildflowers.

Beginning with "anemone" and moving through her list of 36 wildflowers alphabetically (including a few "noxious" weeds!), Hedstrom-Page introduces each entry with a short essay. She offers a little lesson in floral anatomy, including the wildflower's coloring, its Latin and common names, plus its medicinal, historic, artistic, or culinary uses. Sketches by artist Kevin Ingram accompany the text.

Some of Hedstrom-Page's descriptions are lovely: "The columbine flower is shaped like the head and neck of a dove, and the spurs of the flower look like a quintet of doves bent down to drink at a fountain." On the pond lily, she writes, "This aquatic wildflower often adds a yellow ruffle to mountain lakes and marshes." Even those who know a wildflower well will see it through her eyes in a new way.

A section in each chapter called "My Wonderings" offers a short devotional thought related to the flower (On the viciously deep-rooted bull thistle, she ruminates, "Worry can get a choke hold on me..."). Occasionally, she overstretches spiritual analogies to make them fit a particular wildflower.

Following the devotional portion is a section, "Your Wanderings," in which she tells the reader when and where to find the wildflower, and what to look for. At the end of each essay is a boxed portion, "Aftereffects," in which the reader is invited to engage in some activity involving the wildflower. There are craft ideas (weaving with split bear grass leaves) and fun things to do with kids (making dangly earrings from bleeding hearts). Some delicious-sounding recipes are offered, from coffee made from chicory root, fireweed tea, to three dishes involving dandelions. There's even a poem and a gardening tip or two. Several lined pages for "reflecting on your growth" end the book.

Like any budding naturalist, Hedstrom-Page soon finds that her love affair with wildflowers turns to a bit of an obsession. It's not enough to know the name of the trillium --- she finds naming one wildflower leads to a desire to know its uses and its habitat. Naming things causes her to buy a field guide, and one field guide leads to another...and another, and another, and soon a whole library. A tripod, camera, and close-up lenses begin a photography series. Her affection for her topic is irresistible.

Hedstrom-Page's love for creation is reflected back in gratitude during her quiet times with her creator: "I imagined him as a glassblower or cabinetmaker carefully designing each flower, drawing from his eternity of beauty, purity, and knowledge --- divine resources beyond my comprehension," she writes. Wildflowers, she observes, provide a glimpse of God.

One of the few missteps in this beautifully designed book is the informational yet intrusive footnoting. It's also a little confusing that the activities involve picking wildflowers, yet a cautionary note at the end of the book advises readers to think before they pick: "Only in the wild do they look their best."

However, this is a delightful book to expand your knowledge of flora, to give to a friend as a gift, or to use with children and grandchildren to open their eyes to the beauty of creation. Even those readers who already love and have a working knowledge of wildflowers will find new information and insights into the wonder of God's handiwork here.

Not worth the money............2004-04-10

We are enjoying a wondeful week in Iceland and bought the book as useful pocket guice. Not worth the money. Any of the free guides available at the airport or hotels have more accurate info. For example, the guide on p106 mentions an angelica schnapps, Hvannarotar which is not available at any restaurant or liquor shop in the city of Reykjavik.

A much
better buy to learn about the country is "Waking Up in Iceland" that weaves < marvelous tale around the music industry while giving tourism advice, history and a good read.

In the future, I will stick with Frommers, Lonely Planet or other better guides.

Better Biographies Elsewhere.......2006-09-13

I found it rather difficult to finish this rather long book. (422 pages not including endnotes and index). Length, however, was not what made it difficult. For some reason Alf J. Mapp believes it necessary to use difficult language at nearly every turn when such language is not necessary. I consider myself an above average reader and I must say that I struggled all the way through. The book would have been far more enjoyable had Mapp conversed in a style more acceptable to those of us who aren't quite up to his education level.

His use of language, quite frankly, makes his biography quite boring. Unless you're a collector of Jefferson books as I am, I would recommend getting your biography elsewhere.

Jefferson's Life Explored In Depth.......2006-02-22

This volume is the first of Mapp's two volume biography of Jefferson. It concludes at the time of Jefferson's first election as President of the United States. The author has done extensive research on the events of Jefferson's life and the circumstances of the days during which he lived. He benefited from access to materials at the College of William and Mary, Jefferson's and Mapp's alma mater.

The writing style is academic in nature. This is not a book written to be widely purchased by the book-buying public. Many will find the writing style to be burdensome. But, the depth of detail on Jefferson is enough to satisfy the most ardent Jefferson-phile.

The last chapter of this volume is a discussion of whether Jefferson is a liberal or a conservative. Mapp has written a very enjoyable and enlightening discussion that highlights the contradictions of Jefferson's life. For example, slavery versus "all men are created equal" or his purchase of the Louisiana Territory without Congressional approval versus his antipathy for a monarchial President and his leanings toward very limited government action. All of this forms the framework for a discussion that is on point with political ideologies of the current times. The suggestion by Mapp that Jefferson's contradictions are born of his great intelligence and the ability to see every side of every issue is a very intriguing notion. If you were to read no other chapter of the book, this last chapter would be worth the time and may even stir the reader to start at the beginning and read the whole book.

Have a good dictionary ready.......2003-07-11

This is a decent book. I was truly excited about reading it. I was particularly fascinated by the author's use of the paradoxes of Jefferson's words and deeds.

However, I found it hard to read due to the author's needlessly pretentious word choice. My appetence for consummating the reading of this tome was stymied by a repetitious exigence to avail myself of a dictionary due to polysyllabic profundity. ;-)

Artist and Intellectual as Founding Father.......2000-12-19

Alf J. Mapp, Jr.'s biography of Thomas Jefferson, A Strange Case of Mistaken Identity, successfully conveys the unique personality qualities that resided in one of our most influential and least understood Founding Fathers.

Rereading this biography on the heels of the Clinton Presidency one is struck by the similarities and differences between these two politicians. While Jefferson's intellect and accomplishments will never be equalled by William Jefferson Clinton, the outgoing incumbent shares certain characteristics with his namesake which the Mapp biography lucidly described five years before Clinton ran for office. The major difference between these two men may be that Thomas Jefferson did not hunger after the public's love the way a modern politician must in order to succeed. It is also highly doubtful that the American Public today would ever vote for an intellectual of such obviously of artistic temperment and intellect as the 3rd President. The "Elvis Presley" folksy charm of Bill Clinton is probably why he succeeded in his quest while Al Gore fell short in the Electoral College. Mapp's book succeeds in bringing forth what eluded many biographers before him, and that is the intensity of the passion and animosity that Thomas Jefferson stimulated in his politican adversaries. In this he clearly brings our outgoing current President to mind.

There are other parallels between the Jefferson legacy and the Clinton White House, the commitment to internationalism for one, and an egalitarian commitment to popular access to higher education for another. But the times and the men are ultimately different, and understanding this basic fact is made most palbable by Mapp's major contribution to a considerable trove of already existing Jefferson literature.

Must Read.......2006-07-11

This book is a must read for anyone who has had a family member suffer a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and I wish those who don't deal with TBI's to read it so they have an understanding of those who do have one. I have a son who suffered one and even though his wasn't as severe as Rachel's, there were parts of Rachel's problems that he also dealt with.

This book is also a wonderful story that miracles do happen. I think Rachel's mother was the driving force in her recovery.

Great Book

smartest memoir of the year.......2002-06-18

Atop all the courageous acts in this story, the final and most lasting one is Karen Brennan's commitment of her story to print. In her turmoil's depths, she attests to uncomfortable truths and confesses her impassioned dismay that love is sometimes mixed with guilt, that hope is a hairsbreadth from dread, that the cruelest and most unjust penalty is in another light a largesse with unending rewards. Most impressive is the revelatory presentation of an active mind (or perhaps two minds) learning, reformulating, performing. In her new role as caregiver researching her daughter's brain injury, Brennan confronts anew terms she had understood as fiction instructor and critical theorist: reading this, you'll come to know that what you appreciate in your favorite author or in your best friend's letters is your own innate complicity in a good act of perserveration or confabulation or dissociation. The gradual reunderstanding of memory and narrative is a thrill to experience.

Notwithstanding her publisher's marketing strategy, this is far more than a story of survival; and though she may share with Mark Doty or John Bayley a life marked by caregiving and loss, Brennan authors a far finer literary memoir, imaginatively and unsympathetically crafted, with a style more akin to the radical sincerity of J.R. Ackerley or Annie Ernaux or Herve Guibert.

These are your best friend's letters. Karen Brennan is your favorite author.

A moving story of rebirth and courage.......2002-05-07

Karen Brennan's Being With Rachel ... tells of a family's changes when a 25-year-old daughter is gravely injured in a motorcycle accident. Her mother's account of her daughter's slow recovery, determination to walk again, and lasting brain injuries makes for a moving story of rebirth and courage.

A must read for anyone.......2002-03-14

This is a wonderfully touching story of brain injury survival that hasn't been seen much. Instead of from a survivors voice, it's from a parents voice. What a couragous and strong woman Karen is. This book shows you what daily life is like living with a survivor. This story reads alot like my own. I identified with Rachel on a very personal level and put me in touch even more with perhaps what my mother went through with me. This is such good writting that I feel I know Karen and her family personally. And not becuase I have brain injury. Read this book! Even if you don't know brain injury, this can apply to any life altering stuggle people go through.

A book for everyone.......2002-03-13

Brennan's subject is much larger than the aftermath of the tragedy that happened to her daughter. Is her daughter a different person because of her brain injury? Is Brennan, now, becoming a different person because of the way her relationship to her daughter is changing? Brennan worries questions of identity, personality, and the significance of memory with an astonishingly light touch, and she tells a terrific story. You could almost say that Brennan has made good somehow of the tragedy, turned her daughter into an inspiring lesson for all of us--except that Brennan is too smart and too observant of life to be that reductive. Her Rachel is no lesson; she's a treasure and a pain and a person-and-a-half. An often funny, heartening, and inspiring book.

I really liked the cards designed by Claire Sun-Ok Choi even though as one reviewer mentioned almost all the cards are square. I bought this book after I had seen it in my library and liked the projects. The methods used are simple, well described and accompanied with step by step pictures. In other words,instructions are clear and understandable.

I received this book as a Christmas gift. There are lots of pretty and delicate designs in the book and I like how the author finds many different uses for a few basic embellishments however every card in the book is a 5"x5" card - the dimensions/scale are planned for square cards as opposed to rectangular cards. I also thought more illustrations would have been helpful in some cases. I don't think a beginner card maker would find this book very helpful.

Spectacular book for ANY new Christian!.......2007-05-17

This book is not only a fantastic resource for young kids, but it is also an incredible tool for any person that is early in their walk with Christ or even for those who are searching. It offers very straightforward answers that are easly to understand and relate to. Both I and my kids have a hard time putting it down each time we get it out. One question leads to another which leads to another. We had some great family discussions with this book. Every family should have one in my opinion.

Every home should have a copy! This is a fantastic resource to have on hand regardless of the ages within your home. Some of the questions have been verbatim of some my own children have asked. The great treasure of the book is that each answer is biblically based. It has been a wonderful reinforcement for my children to have their own questions answered directly from the Bible. Thank you Mr. Veerman!

Defying long-held definitions of drawing and rejecting traditional materials, modern artists invented a host of practices, altering not only the field of drawing but artmaking in general. I purchased book 1 & 2 from Amazon. The illustrations are far too small to be a professionally represented art book from MOMA I've decided to save my money rather than pay out for the 3rd edition. It sounds a good buy from its description but I don't consider this trilogy to be very satisfactory.

This is not a good artbook. The images are way too small to be satisfying. This book could have been great, but falls way short of its potential. Don't buy it, you will be disappointed.

DRAWING from the MODERN.......2006-12-27

DRAWING from the MODERN is the first of a three part series published by MOMA as catalogue to accompany the chronologically arranged exhibitions of their drawing collection; in part, celebration of the seventy fifth anniversary of the founding of the Museum.

This first book looks at the late nineteenth century through the beginning of the twentieth. Care and preservation of these drawings dictate that they are displayed infrequently, paper being a delicate medium, subject to fading, discoloration and brittleness. The publication of this series then allows us to have at hand a history of drawings seldom seen, and a visual education demonstrating how problems of that era both evolved and worked themselves out.

The introduction by Jodi Hauptman is broad and well worth reading. Aside from her entertaining "end of art" stories, she addresses artists and process leading to the dissolution of prevalent notions: relationship of "mark" to "ground", took new form; spatial notions of an orderly page, questioned; the element of chance, explored as process; the ego relationship of an artist to work, dissolving. New imagery happened: collage, abstraction, grids, enhanced emotions, metaphors of feeling, the sublime re-imaged. New subjects explored brutalities of war, notions of "city", identity, the spiritual, and the abstract.

As perhaps with all process of art, the uncertainty of change brought forth much that is new. The 139 plates of drawings both demonstrate and give testimony by leading artists of the time to new era in process. Drawing as subject matter is fascinating. To be expected, the book is well printed. Of course, what is book one without book two and three?

This is the best book on Juan Gris. It has a full review of the artist's career and life.The colour reproductions in it I prefer to the other books on Gris I own. The plates are the largest and the best. If you like Gris you should buy this book: it is handsomely bound in paper and the binding is a good quality. The type fonts are readable and suitably designed to the subject.

The early decades of the 20th century saw unprecedented cooperation between the performing and visual arts. This is a biography of Randall MacDonnell, 1st marquis of Antrim (1609–1683), an important Irish statesman of Scottish extraction who was a Caroline loyalist, Catholic confederate, Cromwellian collaborator and Restoration pragmatist. It focuses on Antrim’s political career between his marriage to the duchess of Buckingham in 1635 and his restoration to his County Antrim estates in 1665. Antrim’s extraordinary career highlights three important truths about early modern Ireland. It illustrates the elastic nature of the concept of ‘patriotism’ in the turbulent years of the mid-seventeenth century; it demonstrates that Ireland was and must be viewed as part of the triple monarchy of the Stuart kings; and, finally, that Ireland - at least in the 1640s - was seen as, for the first and last time before 1922, part of the European state system. This is the only book which examines these issues from a primarily Irish stance.
