Highly reccomend, also the BIG read, her first book The Courage to Give.

If you have any type of adversity or illness or know of someone who is suffering, this is the cure to help them get going.

24 Inspiring Courageous Stories.......2003-11-13

Words cannot describe the impact this book had on me after reading it. Author Jackie Waldman has compiled twenty-four of the most inspiring and touching stories of people with MS, and the effect the disease has on both the person with MS and their families and friends.

I purchased this book because my husband Anthony Zaremba was one of the featured people in the book. As I read the profiles of the others, my emotions ran through a gambit of highs and lows. At times while reading the book, I filled the pages with my own teardrops, and often laughter, as I read of the fortitude and courage that the people in this book exemplify.

If you know of anyone with MS, or if you have MS, place this book on your "must read" list. Best of all, Jackie Waldman's proceeds from this book are being donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Thank you Jackie! I give this book five stars!!

AKC Greyhounds plus more than you probably wanted to know.......2000-07-05

This book has a lot of information about AKC Greyhound lines, so may be of interest to show breeders. Others may find some of the articles at the beginning of the book sadly out of date if not downright offensive. It is of no use to owners and fans of NGA hounds.

I bought this book as a friend of mine had used it in a knitting class to create afhgans. I had a lot of leftover wool and intend to use it up making various squares (like a patch-work quilt) design.

Suprisingly different from Crochet with Blocks.......2006-06-16

Really, not as stimulating as Crochet with Blocks by the same author. To me, it seemed like less variety in the knitting blocks.

I had checked this book out at the library. I knew I wouldn't be able to turn loose of it, so ordered one for my personal use thru Amazon. So many blocks and so many possibilities with all of those patterns. I have been trying each one out. I didn't even know how to do a cable stitch, and the easy instructions in the back of the book showed JUST how easy that stitch was. A person can use these patterns for millions of things! I love this book. It is now my favorite!

I really like the blocks in this book. My knitting time is limited and I can usually finish a block in one or two sittings. The blocks are so portable that you don't have to drag a big project around to knit on the go and I found lots of blocks that I really like.

This is a family oriented book published especially for families, friends, and others interested in understanding and learning about transgendered persons. The first edition sold out; this is the expanded second edition, published in 2003. It deals with all ages and types of transgender - FTM, MTF, Intersex, crossdressing, and androgeny. It is an ideal first book for families who want to understand.

There are seven sections. Section one is comprised of stories written by parents of very young gender variant children, i.e pre-schoolers and school age children who insisted they were not the gender their parents thought they were. Section two is by parents of adult transgenders, each describing their child's coming out process and the journey this revelation started for both the adult child AND the whole family. Section three includes stories by spouses and partners who have weathered the trauma of living through a gender change with their most significant other. Section four is by strategic others - grandparents, siblings, friends, children of trangenders.

In Section five, transgender folks tell about coming out to their children, with both positive and some painful results. Section Six includes short autobiographies by transgender persons, who are FTM, MTF, Intersex, crossdresser, and androgenous. In Section Seven several psychotherapists talk about common issues transgenders raise in therapy.

This was a help as I could see many people involved with Trans loved ones as well as experiances of thier own. There are no frills or sugar glazing in the writings. Every story is some one's involvment with Trans relationship.

A great comfort to trans people and/or loved ones of people who are transgendered........2006-01-09

I believe being born transgendered is not a lifestyle choice, but probably coded in DNA somewhere. This book factually and carefully outlines the facts of life for transgendered people and their loved ones. These short stories will take the reader through a multitude of emotions, but end at one great and comforting thought...the issues can be dealt with and the transgendered themselves, as well as family and friends can come through this with grace. I ordered my copy through PFLAG T-Net and the author herself, sent me a personal note. I am a Christian, but a welcoming Christian who believes that all humans were made in His image. Because we are lucky enough to have come after Jesus Christ AND live at a time of modern medicine, the condition of being transgendered can be treated medically. While I am not transgendered myself, I have a loved one who I think is. I plan on keeping this book in my library and give it to that person when and if the time is right. A must have for anyone who is, cares about a trans person or who is curious about trangenderism.

Too short to provide real insight.......2005-08-09

Although some of the real life stories contained in this book are interesting, there is not enough detail to really help families work through these issues. It more of a "there are others in the world going through this" type of book, rather than providing any special insights.

The number one first book for families of transgendered.......2003-07-23

This compilation of 40 accounts by the parents, spouses, children, and friends of transgendered individuals (and a few TG themselves) describes reactions from family members as they take the road less traveled toward acceptance of their gender variant relative or friend. Each story is brief - usually only a few pages - but expresses the thoughts and experiences of the individual author. The book is edited by the Chair of the PFLAG Transgender Network, Mary Boenke, MSSA, MA, and mother of an adult FTM transgendered son.

Good for families.......2003-04-28

This is a wonderful book for anyone who is trying to explain transgender to a family member, friend, or child. The stories in this book vary from one end of the gender continuum to the next. There are works from all different aged people. Some sections have been added from the original including work from trans people themselves as well as clinicians. If you are comming out to your loved ones anytime soon then this is the book to give them. It's a simple, quick read.

A Lot of Book for the Money.......2004-04-29

Our favorite photographs of ourselves are usually taken by family members and friends. Regardless of their technical quality-- that depends on the prowess of the photographer-- they often remain those pictures we come back to again and again. The reason is obvious: we are often more relaxed and natural around people we know, and they are better at capturing our essence if that can be captured in a photo. I suspect that June Newton aka Alice Springs and Helmut Newton felt the same way about many of these photographs included in this very fine collection. Some of my favorite shots in this coffe-table sized book are those that each of them took of the other. Helmut's portrait of June as Joan of Arc (p. 43) is fantastic. Mrs. Newton was obviously a great beauty in her youth. The photograph on page 211 of Coral Browne, Audrey Wilder and June is stunning. There are also candids taken by Mr. Newton of his wife nude. She in turn shoots Helmut working, clowning, relaxing (pp. 80-81, 86-87) and pensive: "From My Bed In The Clinic" on page 247.

I was not previously familiar with Ms. Newton's photographs, most of which fall into the category of portraits and many of them celebrity portraits. While she is no Helmut, many of these portraits printed here are very fine. Most of them appear to be shot in available light, something that requires all the skills a photographer can muster. Many of them, particularly those of celebrities, according to the text, were shot in less than desirable circumstances and often had to be done very quickly. She obviously can hold her own as a good photographer although I'm sure it didn't hurt her any to learn from someone as talented as her husband.

Mrs. Newton in a well-written narrative takes the reader from her childhood in Australia to her marriage to Helmut and their travels in Europe, Australia and the United States. She's obviously a character in her own right. How many women as public as she would discuss a facelift in their memoirs, for instance?

Through much of her professional career, Mrs. Newton has used the pseudonym "Alice Springs". According to her at the urging of a friend, she produced a map, shut her eyes and aimed a pin that landed at the "Center of The Continent - Alice Springs." A beautiful story but a little bit too coincidental to be believable. What would have happened if the pin had landed on, say, "Kangaroo Island" or Mollymook"? Whether or not that little anecdote is true, however, doesn't detract from this beautifully printed book, another fine edition by Taschen. There's a lot of book here for the money.
