Invaluable.......2001-04-13
"... describes 53 national parks and monuments in depth... giving advice on how to plan your time - vital when it comes to setting schedule priorities. Ludmer's tips are invaluable." Physician's Travel & Meeting Guide,
National Park pasttimer.......2001-04-08
Touring America's national parks has become a passtime for me. I've been from Acadia to the North Cascades to the Grand Canyon and this book is an excellent reference. With an emphasis on travelling via automobile, it also has several suggested hiking trips in each park as well as other points of interest. They say that most people never get more than 100 feet from their cars in parks. Well, this is the book to help get you there, and point out the best routes outside of your car. It covers more territory than anyone could possibly see in a lifetime...but it's sure fun to try.
Exploring 50 parks and nearby sites.......2000-04-25
Although it does not include every site administered by the NPS, this book is very thorough in its treatment of the 50 parks it covers. The author also describes 13 suggested driving trips of five to 12 days each, incorporating nearby attractions. Includes detailed information on accommodations/campgrounds, activities available in each park, handy tips and tidbits, maps and photos. A great travel reference book!
Book Description
Grover Cleveland: A Study in Character is the first comprehensive study of our 22nd and 24th president in nearly seventy years. This distinguished leader, the only Democrat elected to the presidency between the Civil War and World War I, rose to political prominence through the ranks of mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York before his election to this nation's highest office. Always concerned with the majority, never the favored few, Cleveland believed his ultimate allegiance was to the nation, not to a political party, and he acted on his strongly-held beliefs throughout his entire political life. At first considered an enemy of labor because of his firm handling of the bloody Chicago Pullman strike, many historians have overlooked Cleveland's numerous accomplishments, including his heroic quest to improve the quality of life for American Indians, his battles against the railroads and big business to prevent the destruction of American land, and his insistence on tariff reduction and remaining on the Gold Standard, which saved the nation from bankruptcy. The only president to be elected to two nonconsecutive terms, Grover Cleveland was the only president to be married in the White House and also the first to have a child in the White House.Brodsky's engrossing work follows Grover Cleveland through his early life in upstate New York, his career as a trial lawyer, mayor, and governor through to his first and second presidencies and his last years as a lecturer and beloved member of the administration at Princeton University. Each chapter will cause readers to reevaluate our perception of this underrated President who, in his dying words said, "I tried so hard to do right," and to evaluate him in the context of his successors.
Customer Reviews:
Help, I lost my Editor!.......2007-05-03
Alyn Brodsky's relentlessly upbeat review of Grover Cleveland should draw a fair amount of critique and interesting argument from historians. The author's point is generally well presented and forcefully argued.
However, as noted in other reviews, Mr. Brodsky makes utterly incorrect, incoherent and useless comparisons assuming the reader of his book on Grover Cleveland is aching to have Brodsky's subject compared (favorably, of course)to modern presidents. It detracts terribly from what, otherwise, is a compelling narrative.
I have not read other reviewers make this point, but I was also perplexed by the vocabulary choices of Mr. Brodsky. I am a reasonably well-read (for goodness sake, I have now read biographies of presidents 1-22/24) person who on occaision will need to look up a word, or learn it in context.
However, at a rate of approximately twice per short chapter, Mr. Brodsky uses words that I don't believe I have ever read before and am certain not a soul has uttered out loud in my presence. This was a 500-page SAT review lesson, but given that I took the SAT about 20 years ago, I could go without.
The flaws in the book are a shame since they are so detracting from an informative, thorough and aggressively argued book.
Essential Read for Gilded Age Historians.......2006-12-14
There are few people who would find the Gilded Age a fascinating time to read about but if you are one of them this biography is perfect. If you are curious about the only honest politician during that era then this is the book for you. Although elected to two terms (non consecutively) see how this democrat filled in the shoes of a largely republican era. This is by far the best biography of Cleveland in print and while some may be turned off by his politicking at the time they fail to realize it was simply the way of things. Cleveland played the political game as honestly as he could and did an excellent job in doing so. Fascinating story about an interesting time in our political history.
The most substantive biography of Grover Cleveland in print.......2006-09-07
There have been two recent biographies of Cleveland taking the same tack: he was a man and a president who shames the recent incombents of the White House. The other is An Honest President: Library Edition by H. P. Jeffers. I thought that this one focused a little more on the issues and Jeffers a little more on the person, although it may be simply that having read this second, the historical details made more of an impression. Despite this generalism, Frances Cleveland is more vividly portrayed in this book. Certainly I thought that Brodsky did a better job of explaining the issues, although Jeffers was a bit more readable.
My history courses in school rarely made it past the Civil War in any detail. We once expended an entire WEEK on the 20th century. Consequently, the last half of the 19th is a particularly vague time for me of robber barons, dollar princesses and nonentity presidents in the East, taking a back seat to the Indian Wars in the West. Cleveland to me was the one who's terms weren't consecutive. I am very pleased to have made his acquaintance in these two books.
Both Brodsky and Jeffers use Cleveland's life to bash recent presidents, a tactic which I don't really approve of, although I must admit to chortling in this case. Jeffers primarily goes after Clinton, which does get a bit repetitious. Brodsky is bipartisan in his complaints, although anything of the sort dates the book rapidly. In a few decades, a new edition would need footnotes explaining the peccadillos to which the authors allude. Of course, it could be argued that books become dated anyway. The readers should consider their own taste.
Brodsky certainly thinks highly of Cleveland, but he is not uncritical, even characterizing him as foolish or self-defeating at times. Brodsky includes appendixes on Cleveland's views on Black Americans and Chinese immigrants and visitors. He concludes that by our standards, he doesn't look good in either case. Brodsky thinks that although he was no better than he should be on these subjects, he did at least have a lack of malice and a sense of fair play even towards people he regarded as inferior. I would have liked a bit more about the Native Americans.
Brodsky's style is occasionally a bit quaint, as though he has picked up the speaking and writing patterns of the time. At other times it is informal, as he throws in various maxims. I mean neither to praise or blame here: it's just how he writes.
Reading this has convinced me that the Republican and Democratic parties are more historically consistent than I thought, despite the swings between what is considered to be liberal and what conservative. This isn't necessarily the good news.
The other current biographies that I am aware of are from series on all the presidents.
I am very glad, and somewhat more optimistic for making Cleveland's acquaintance. Of course, now I suppose we need the debunking bio. Still, I find Cleveland well worth learning about, and I am glad to have more history about a period that I understand too little.
A Biographer with an Agenda which Does Not Include Objectivity.......2006-07-03
The author seems to have two primary purposes for the book: 1. To justify everything that Cleveland did throughout his political career (Cleveland could do no wrong); and 2. To use Cleveland as a vehicle to editoralize on how bad of persons and presidents that Nixon, Reagan, and Bush (first) were.
It is a work that will prove to be disappointing to anyone seeking an objective account of an important president who had strengths and weaknesses as expected for any true leader.
an example of how NOT to write a biography.......2006-01-23
Cleveland's story itself is very interesting, but unfortunately this author butchers the concept of biography so badly that it interferes with the story. This is an excellent example of several things to not do when writing a biography, and serves as a great reminder for why we should appreciate the great ones when they come along. The author excessively editorializes (and very simplistically so at that), inserts his own self into the book too frequently (why at all, I ask?), and often contradicts his own interjected opinions with evidence that a few pages later proves the exact opposite. It gets so muddled on occasion that it is hard to understand how the author came to hold such strong opinions (that for some reason he felt were necessary to include) in the first place. My advice: look elsewhere...I do NOT recommend this book.
Book Description
The Soul of Sponsorship explores the relationship of Bill Wilson, cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, and his spiritual adviser and friend, Father Ed Dowling. Many might consider that such a remarkable individual as Bill Wilson, who was the primary author of AA literature, would be able to deal with many of life's problems on his own. Reading The Soul of Sponsorship will illuminate and answer the question of how Father Ed, an Irish Catholic Jesuit priest who was not an alcoholic, was able to be of such great help to Bill Wilson.
Part of AA's Twelfth Step reminds us "to carry this message to alcoholics," and The Soul of Sponsorship illustrates how sober alcoholics still need the principles of the Twelve Steps brought to them by friends, sponsors, and spiritual advisers. Some of the problems faced by Bill Wilson were:
- depression in recovery
- dependency issues
- whether or not to experiment with LSD
- the place of money and power in AA
- knowing God's plan and will
- learning from mistakes
Father Ed taught Bill the importance of "discernment." In Father Ed's Jesuit tradition, discernment was a gift, passed down to him from St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits, who described his own struggle with discernment in Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. The Twelve Steps of AA and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius presuppose that there is a caring God whose will can be known. The act of tuning in to God's action at one's center is discernment. The big question is, how do you know your Higher Power is speaking and revealing Himself through your feelings and desires?
What Bill learned from Father Ed can be found in books and articles he wrote for AA. For the good of AA and himself, Bill learned to listen to his desires, be aware of his inner dynamics, and tune into the action of God within. Doing this meant learning to recognize and identify his personal movements -- those inner promptings and attractions often called emotions or affections -- which are part of ordinary human experiences. The person who helped Bill grow in discernment was Father Ed, the Jesuit priest with a cane who limped into the New York AA clubhouse one sleet-filled November night in 1940.
The two "fellow travelers," Father Ed Dowling and Bill Wilson, gave each other perhaps the greatest gift friends can give: calling on each to know who he is -- before God.

spirituality.......2007-08-19
I found this book to be of interest in my addiction. It shows that the incurable can be greatly helped in restoring the alcoholic(addict) in returning to a productive life among his fellow man by following a spiritual path.
Deepening my Catholic Sobriety.......2007-05-13
I read Fitzgerald's book while I was on a 30 day Ignatian retreat, journeying on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. I have been in the A.A. program for almost a year and somewhere along the line came to sense a connection between the spiritual program of A.A. and some of the roots of my own Catholic tradition. Just as, at 54 years of age, I found myself "ready" for the 30 day retreat, so did I find myself in January of this year "ready" for the gift of the 12 Steps for me. Like the protagonist in Francis Thompson's Hound of Heaven, God and the peace of sobriety FOUND ME. I knew that I had to understand more about how the 12 Step spirituality was in sync with my Catholic faith. This book on the correspondence and long friendship of Fr. Dowling and Bill W. gave me tremendous insight, knowledge and inspiration to help make my own 12 Step Walk one that resonates and deepens my own Catholic Christian journey. It is worth the read!!!
True Friendship - Spiritual Growth.......2007-04-21
This story has its roots in the friendship of two remarkable men of different backgrounds and experiences. Although, both men thirsted for the 'Direction of God's will' in their lives, they approached it from vastly different experiences. Whether you come to these pages from A.A. or the contemplative prayer of Ignatiun spirituality, this is a must read. We are shown how ones weakness and sortcomings can become overcome and transended by following a 'few simple rules'. the openess of their letters is evidence of the trust and love these two men shared with each other.
I do think that a personal understanding of the Tweleve Steps and Twelve Traditions of A.A., as well as the exercises of St. Ignatius would allow a better grasp of this spiritual journey, but is in no way necessary to appreciate the remarkable transformation that these two men achieved with and through each other's friendship and guidance. Much can be absorbed by reviewing these letters and the simple set up that 'Fr. Bob' gives their communications in his explanatory prose. This book allows a hightened understanding of the foundations of A.A. and the rewards of a life based in 'Love and Service', as well as the true nature of discernment.
The letters are great, the rest is chaos.......2002-01-25
I was really excited to read this book after hearing someone talk about it. I looked forward to an insight on Bill's struggle with depression and also hearing the guidance he received from Father Dowling. In that way, the book did not disappoint. The letters are great. My complaint is the way this book is written. I am an avid reader, yet this book makes very little sense! I do not understand the authors point, his interpretations, why he even grouped sections of letters together. He doesn't seem to have a theme, that I can see. I still think this book is worth having in your collection, just for the letters.

Customer Reviews:
Very Basic Book. Good for Beginners........2007-02-27
This is a good beginner book with simple patterns and basic photographs. It's not groundbreaking and I don't feel compelled to start anything in it, but I do like to look at it for inspiration. It has a short techniques section and simple sections on cables, lace, beading & edging. Most of the patterns are rated Beginner / Easy and 80% of the patterns are for scarves. This is a good book if you like to use fancy yarns.
Great knitting.......2006-08-21
Excellent types of products easy to follow directions made one in a matter of hours
Fun, Easy, Low-Stress, High-Fashion Projects.......2006-04-23
Some days I'm in the mood to knit "for the fun of it" instead of for the challenge. This book is full of projects that are easy, fun and yet still fulfilling.
The only criticism I have is that there are errors (typos) in the instructions, that are annoying and could confuse beginners. For example, one pattern gives instructions for Row 1, then Row 2, then Row 4 - which should actually be row 3. Another pattern gives an incorrect stitch count within the first few lines.
Also, there is no guage info - apparently because these items don't really need to fit. Still, if your guage is off, you may need more or less yarn. To obtain the same results as the author with the exact same yarn, I have had to adjust the needs size significantly (from size 11 to size 17).
Even with all that - I do like the book.
Knit Ponchos, Wraps & Scarves.......2006-03-01
As an experienced "beginner" this book is full of delightful patterns. There are certainly advanced patterns also. The color of the photographed work is exceptional. Love the close-ups. Our knitting/crocheting club refer to the patterns by color. Many great scarf patterns for gift giving. Quick, inexpensive, using only 1 or 2 skeins of yarn, and best of all, perfectly beautiful finished product. This book would be one for anyone who enjoys a fun new twist on scarves, wraps or ponchos. Check finished length on the scarves. I have found a few to be too short...I just add to the middle rows of the pattern when working in horizontal or cast on more stitches when working in vertical. (allow accordingly when purchasing yarn)
Even more.......2005-12-16
This is the latest in my collection of pattern books, just published in 2005. I bought this volume because of the new ideas it contains. Ways of incorporating beadwork, unusual edgings, use of yarns such as roving - these designs go beyond the ubiquitous "fun fur" stuff and offers a number of new looks and styles. Fun, inventive, not at all boring or routine.

a beautiful forgotten season.......2005-09-13
I had checked out this book several years ago at the library and enjoyed it throughly. When I wanted to review it again it had been discarded!!!!!! I have been looking for it ever since Thanks to Amazon.Com it is mine at last!!!
The book fills a gardener with hope for this forgotten season. You have a glorious spring followed by a power summer and then ...........??????? Lacy shows how many plants can put on a daziling display at this time of year and gives pictures of landscaping ideas using these ground materials. The autumn plantings stay in the background until all others are perishing and fading then presto... your yard is glorious again.
It is hard to plan a garden in the south for three seasons but Lacy inspires one to try.
leave the drama and artsy prose for a novel!.......2000-09-15
I was thrilled to get this book - autumn and winter are my favorite gardening seasons. I was hoping this would be a factual book, pumped with good horticultural information.
What I got was a sappy book full of romanticized gobbledygoock and poetic prose. If I wanted to read a fictional romance novel I would have done so.
If you want a "just the facts" let's get down to gardening type book, this is not for you. If you want a dreamy armchair book to read as you sip chablis in front of a crackling fire, whilst the snowflakes dance upon your frigid windowsill, then this may be for you.
This book expands gardening into the "lost" season........1997-09-07
This is a wonderful book, especially for the gardener who has dreaded the end of the glorious growing season. After years of consoling myself with platitudes (after all, fall is just the harbinger of a new growing season...) Allen Lacy enabled me to see past the arbitrary definition of northern gardening as something confined to spring and summer.
It's safe to say that since I first read The Garden in Autumn in hardcover seven years ago that my garden and gardening have been totally revolutionized. No longer is the first frost (mid-September here in western Maine) a death sentence in my borders...in fact, I have multitudinous plants which now don't even begin to bloom until well after that time; asters, hardy chrysanthemums, hardy cyclamen, fall crocus. Some years I even have the last fall crocus blooming gamely, an iridescent eery blue, through the first snow fall.
Anyone who gardens in the northern tier of the United States and Canada, especially, will do well to allow Lacy to inspire him or her with the great beauty and potential of this "season of flame and fire and incandescence". The specifics are accurate and informed, the photography gorgeous, and Mr. Lacy's prose, as always, is a delight

It's fall on the farm. This delightful picture book takes us through the harvest of colors. It's all here for us to enjoy, from the red apples to the bright orange pumpkins!
If only all farms could look like this one!.......2003-07-19
A wonderful introduction to farm life is this beautifully illustrated children's book. With rhyming prose and full-page illustrations, "Red Are the Apples" is a delight for rural dwellers and city folk alike.
Each page takes the young reader through different crops and other elements of a thriving farm. The fun lies also in finding the hen that appears on almost every page. That becomes a "search" that the child will delight in taking.
This is a five-star book that I had the pleasure of sharing with my four-year-old niece.

Book Description
Once the glories of summer have passed, it is easy for thoughts of chill winds and winter frosts to occupy the gardener's mind. Ethne Clarke's Autumn Gardens is a beautiful reminder that this season can be one of the most fruitful and rewarding of all.
In autumn, although plants have reached maturity, they are far from finished; in this glorious season, leaf color, structural seed heads, tawny fading grasses, and ripened fruit take center stage. The first section of the book demonstrates how to get the best from the season by focusing on harvesting, color, and framework; the second section presents a collection of 100 different plants that excel in autumn, with complete descriptions and advice on care.

Exactly what the title states... SIMPLE!.......2007-08-02
The book is a quick, easy read and provides exactly what the title states: simple tips you can immediately apply to your home and use in everyday life. Not only are the tips easy to follow, they are also affordable. Simple changes without breaking the bank - wonderful!
Not worth the price for basically a pamphlet........2007-07-21
There was not much content and little effort, in a paper back the size of a large post-it note, from other things I have read or seen on feng shui. I think it was more into buying their stones and water fountains etc. than actually the placement of furnishings and the actually home location. I was disappointed.
This book is awesome.......2007-05-14
I really liked how simple and clear all of the information was. I was able to immediatley take the bagua map and create great fung shui in different areas of my home.

Help is here..........2004-02-21
let me begin by saying that there is good advice in
this book, no question about it. if you are looking
for some help in getting a better perspective on life,
then there is help in this book. why do you think the
series is so popular? however, i dont think that the ideas
are original. you can find the same prescriptions for
a better attitude---such as more sense of humor, less
attention paid to difficult people, things are not as
bad as you think, the future is unknown and so do
stress yourself too much over it---in so many other
books in the self help section. it is old wine in a
new bottle. you can even get the same advice from a
wise old relative if your family is fortunate enough
to have one. it is also like listening to a friend
who knows something of life that you havent
realized yet. the format is easy. the book is pocket-size.
the chapters are very short, and the phraseology
non-technical. the cost is minimal. practically,
the lessons contained in this book can apply to
both males and females. if you are looking for your
first self-helpbook, then you have found a good one.

Another useful book by Carlson that applies to men AND women.......2001-12-10
Enjoyed reading DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF FOR MEN by Richard Carlson . . . this is the latest in Carlson's "small stuff" series, and it does not disappoint . . . he continues to offer simple ways to minimize stress in a competitive world . . . they seem to make sense, at least to me, and can be applied to virtually any situation . . . although directed at men, I think women would also benefit from reading it . . . by the same token, methinks men could benefit from reading the companion DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF FOR WOMEN (written by Carlson's wife Kristine) . . . I know that I'll be looking for it.
I liked many ideas that I got from the book; among them:
Have an affair. . . .The idea is to reignite your passion for living, and to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Remind yourself how precious and how short this adventure really is. I read a great book called A PARENTHESIS IN
ETERNITY . . . What a great way to think about the duration of your
life--as a blip on a passing screen. We're here for a moment in
time--and then we're gone. Why waste one second of self-pity,
frustration, and all the rest? Our lives are so much more important than that.
Consider how you would respond to the following two sentences spoken by a spouse, lover, or friend. First, "I hate my stupid job; (its bad)." Or, "Do you know what I'd really love to be doing?" Wow--what a difference. In the first sentence, you, as the listener or receiver of the complaint, want to leave the room. Your instinct is to pull away. In the second, however, you want to hear more; you want to engage in the conversation because it brings you closer to the person who is sharing.
Be for something rather than against it. . . . You can see how easy it is to be working with very positive intentions, yet still find a way to drive yourself nuts. Some environmental activists, for example, are doing great things-choosing to be vegetarians, picking up litter, cleaning up the beaches, planting trees, recycling, and raising awareness as well as money for the causes they believe in. Others, however, yell and scream, block traffic, chain themselves to trees, and starve themselves in an attempt to accomplish their goals.
Inspirational!.......2001-10-23
I am a female who recently bought this book as a gift for a relative. Before wrapping, I skimmed the book to see if it had the same Richard Carlson quality. Indeed it does!
This book, just like the other don't sweat the small stuff titles, includes ways to overcome difficult times. It will give you a positive attitude and help you gain peace with yourself, and uprooting events.
Good Christmas gift!
