aLL GHOST TOWN FANS MUST HAVE THIS BOOK.......2007-02-23
This book is probably the best ghost town book published for any state in the U.S.. It is nicely divided up by area of Arizona. So you can easily travel to a particular area and visit a few ghost towns in a row in a rather short period of time. Each area has its principle site (uually the site with most to see and the most history). Also, two to six secondary sites area listed for each area. Then minor sites are also listed so you can prioritize you visits to maximize what you see in a smaller amount of time.
The author also includes detialed driving directions and if a four wheel drive or high clearance vehicle is needed to get there. The pictures in this book are amazing. I am guessing that there is information on over 100 ghost towns in this book. Due to the dry climate, the ghost towns here tend to stay pretty well preserved. And the author does a good job of showing you the best there is to see here. I have personally visited probably 30 to 50 of the towns in this book, and I am telling you it is worth every penny.
Excellent guide to Arizona sites.......2005-11-12
This is an interesting and well-illustrated book on ghost towns and mining camps in Arizona. The book is divided into eight sections (most in the southern part of the state), and within each section the various sites are described and located.
Each section has one major ghost town as its main attraction (Oatman, Swansea, Vulture, Sasco, Ruby, Jerome, Clifton, and Bisbee), and then several nearby sites are listed and described. Many photographs (historical and contemporary) are included, all of high quality and on slick paper, similar to the magazine Arizona Highways, which published the book.
Important for people who actually enjoy visiting ghost towns when possible, Varney tells exactly how to find each site, whether a high-clearance vehicle is necessary to get there, and whether each is on private property or not. The book is useful, informative, and a pleasure to read. Anyone interested in ghost towns in Arizona, whether as an armchair traveler or in-the-field explorer, will want to have this book.
Easy reading.......2004-04-02
I found this book to have some very interesting photographs and accurate information about the Arizona area. Good resource book for accurate historical information.
One of the two best ghost-town books I've seen........2001-07-30
-----------------------------------------------------------
[Paired review with Ghost Towns of Colorado, by Philip Varney]
Ghost town books are traditionally rather scruffy affairs, with dim
photos, little organization and an amateurish look. Philip Varney
has raised the bar with these two books. Both feature clean design,
good directions to the sites, excellent photographs and well-written
text. Varley writes "I wanted a practical, informative guide that
would give me the details I needed next to me on the sea of my
truck." Both books are squarely on his mark.
The Colorado book is nicer: all the present-day photographs are in
color, and the extra 24 pages allow more photos and a bit more depth
to the text. But the Arizona book is no slouch: it has the advantage of
Arizona Highways' long experience in producing good, easy-to-use
guidebooks (plus it's cheaper). I've been to most of the sites in both
books; in almost every case I've learned something new from his
books. The photos are excellent, the maps and directions are easy to
follow, and Varney's writing style is personable and informative.
Either book will make a fine companion for your next Colorado or
Arizona vacation, even if you don't ordinarily pay much attention
to ghost towns. Those with an interest in Western history *need*
both books. And they're both excellent for armchair travellers.
We're already talking about a Colorado trip next summer --
Kathleen's never seen the *real* South Park.
Varney really has no competition for either state. These are the two
best ghost-own guidebooks I've seen. He'salso written ghost-town
guides for New Mexico (1987?) and Southern California (1990). The NM book is decent, but out-of-date. I haven't seen the other.
Happy reading--
Pete Tillman
Consulting Geologist, Tucson & Santa Fe (USA)
Pete Tillman visited his first Colorado ghost towns some 40 years ago, and has since been to hundreds more throughout the West, both for work and for fun. Vulture (AZ) is his current favorite "true" ghost. But, hmm, Bodie (CA) is bigger and better-kept.... And Jerome (AZ) has the best views... And I've *still* never been to Crystal (CO). So much to see, so little time....
"Splenderiferous" collection of ghost town data........1997-05-17
This book contains a wealth of factual background data on each ghost town, as well as numerous "back then" and "see it now" photographs. The book maintains the high standards expected from the publishers of "Arizona Highways Magazine"
Customer Reviews:
nice pictures.......2007-08-03
The information and directions included in this book are very informative, but not in a lot of depth. Photos were fantastic. Buy it with another book whose emphasis is Arizona history with more specific directions and it will be a winning combination.

Book Description
In this perceptive psychological portrait of Clinton and his presidency, expert Stanley Renshon investigates whether Clinton has demonstrated the requisite qualities of judgment, vision, character and skill to face domestic and international challenges. Renshon incisively analyzes Clinton's sweeping ambitions, his enormous confidence in himself and his goals, and his success in convincing people that he genuinely cares about them. He reveals a Bill Clinton whose capacity for political success is often undermined by the very traits for which many praise him.
Now in paperback with a new introduction, the book follows the development of Clinton's character from his early family experiences to his highly successful adolescence and long political career. Renshon illustrates how each step along the way--his childhood, the issues surrounding his draft-dodging, his marriage to Hillary Rodham whose own psychology has both helped and hurt him, and his tenure as governor--is crucial to understanding his erratic and controversial presidency. He also explores the nature of the Clinton marriage as a political partnership and why this talented man has failed to live up to his promise.
Customer Reviews:
Slow, but in-depth.......2000-08-20
I read this book while reading Clinton on Clinton at the same time, and found this one to be much more negative. The pyschology of Clinton is interesting, but at time it get a little to in-depth for somebody wanting to know about politics and not childhood lessons that were learned. It talks about Clinton's mother, which is interesting to hear. If you want an overview of Clinton, don't read the book, if you feel like you need to know evrything, read it.
A Pleasant Surprise.......2000-02-27
I had never head of this book before I spotted it on the shelf of my local bookstore. But after reading it, I was surprised that it hadn't received more attention and praise. As far as the Clinton books go, this is the few non-partisan works you will find. Further, it is packed with information and original analysis. David Maraniss's biography is still the best on this subject but Mr. Renshon's book is close behind. He complements Maraniss by offering psychological insights and then applying these to Clinton's first term in office. The result is a clever book that will leave the reader more informed and enlightened about this enigmatic president.
The Reason for Bill Clinton's Behaviour Made Clear.......1997-02-19
I bought this book because I heard a talk by the author on C-Span summarizing the book, and I had been puzzled by Bill Clinton's behavior. This book gets to the root of his behavior and why he does what he does, and why he does it the way he does. Part of the book is devoted to the real history of Clinton's young life, and part to the analysis of recorded behaviours in his political life. The combination truly clarifies what is going on.
Stanley Renshon is Professor of Political Science at CUNY with a specialty in Psychology of Political Behavior, and does a fine job in this book.

Readers of Lorian Hemingway's memoir about salvation through fishing will be let in on a secret known to anglers through the ages: the act of fishing is a physical embodiment of hope--and for some it is a form of recovery. "I take fish personally," writes Hemingway in the opening chapter of Walk on Water, a seemingly coy statement that is proved repeatedly in these pages. A juvenile bass rescued from a pothole shrinking in the hot sun--a fish saved in the innocence of childhood--is her first piscine connection, followed by the care of a southern-fried cook named Catfish. But innocence fades, and it is not until many years later--after an adolescence blurred by alcohol, dope, and larceny--that the author rediscovers the redemptive qualities of fishing. Now living in the opposite corner of the country, she learns to stalk the Northwest's coldwater fish while raising a daughter and partaking of the natural world's rejuvenating life cycle: "I have fished with my daughter on a stretch of the Alsea River in Oregon that runs through vine maple forest where moon dollar beams of light spot the forest floor, the pattern shifting with the wind. In autumn the leaves bleed scarlet and the air is tinted pink with the refraction of all that red. High in the trees pileated woodpeckers knock a beat and red-tailed hawks glide above the canopy." The end of the line, it turns out, is alive with possibility.
Book Description
From catfishing in Mississippi as a young girl to battling marlin in the Caribbean, Lorian Hemingway has always felt most comfortable with a fishing pole in hand. But for many years, it was alcohol that held prominence in her life, almost causing her to drown in the family legacy. Walk on Water is Lorian Hemingway's amazing story of how her one true passion-fishing-saved her life. With humor and startling honesty, Hemingway wryly acknowledges how fishing is more than a metaphor for her salvation-it allowed her to feel connected to something as a child, living with her alcoholic mother and abusive stepfather. It helped her to heal after a to-hell-and-back fight for sobriety. And it led her to the discovery that family consists not necessarily of the people you are born with, but of those you choose to let into your heart. From despair to hope, from loss to recovery, Walk on Water is a remarkable tale of strength told by a born storyteller.
Customer Reviews:
Wit, Charm, and Guile.......2007-08-10
This is a penetrating story written gracefully and honestly by a courageous woman. Its compelling and essential messages are delivered with exquisite subtlety, so that our appreciation for the earth, for the people in our lives who lift us, for the waters that cleanse and renew us, and ultimately, for ourselves, is heightened and sharpened by each flowing page. What's more, Hemingway's Southern wit, charm, and guile make this book a heck of a lot of fun to read.
the best I've read all year!.......2000-09-18
WOW! I didn't buy this book expecting much. Yes, I knew it was written by the granddaughter of the Ernest Hemingway and yes, I know it was about 'fishing'....but I really had no idea. Really..no idea how this woman's words would grab me. Knowing that she lives in the same city where I work, I'm hoping to one day stumble across her and just tell her how much impact this book had on me. A co-worker just went through alcohol de-tox and this book gave me some vague notion of what he went through. Thanks for that! I'm not a fisherwoman....but I love fish and I work with dead fish parts daily as a science-lady, and this book is full of fish-wisdom, honesty and beautiful, true words. This book is full of all that. Humor, honesty and love. Again, WOW!
a powerful graceful novel/full of life.......1998-12-27
Forget all that you've read about redemption and the bad girl made good, if you like to live in the real world and to fish, this book is for you. Not to mention that it's pretty damn well written to boot. Good Stuff!
A beautifully written life story of hope and redempemtion.......1998-05-28
For anyone who has ever witnessed a loved one do the slow dance with alcoholism, Lorian Hemingway's memoir is waiting for you. Yet another lesson that life is best described with four letter words: love, hate, hope and dirt. I laughed out loud at her hilarious drug hazed antics and cringed as she began her long drawn out fall. Her honesty is astounding: no regrets, no finger pointing, no pass off of responsibility of her actions. Thank you, Lorian, for this memorable book.
This is a great survivor story.......1998-05-10
The book was recommended to me by a friend and I thought it would be a great lazy day reading book. Was I wrong! Once I started, I couldn't put it down. The book grabs your soul from the beginning and by the end, you can't believe it's over. It iis truly the ultimate in survivor stories and it proves the adage.."What does not kill you, will make you stronger." Obviously, the author is (at the end) a stronger, resiliant woman .

Book Description
There is a theory in quantum physics which suggests that the only reason we can't Walk on Water is because we believe that we can't; that it is belief alone which shapes our lives. We are the creators of our own reality, and can, therefore, create whatever life we choose, if we but dare.
In the fall of 2004, following an urge she couldn't explain but which had nagged at her persistently for years, Jude Messineo dared. Choosing to trust her intuition over the well-intentioned objections of family and friends, she quit a high-paying management job, sold her house, gave away all of her possessions, and drove away from Chicago, her home for all of her 46 years. Her destination was Gulf Shores, Alabama, for what she thought would be a quiet and introspective three month sabbatical as she decided what to do next with her life.
Scarcely a week into her carefully planned retreat Hurricane Ivan roared into Gulf Shores, leaving her homeless for the next three months and forcing her to "go to Plan B, whatever that might be." What followed was an extraordinary journey, initially begun in fear and panic as well-laid plans unraveled. But as a series of events pull her from one end of the country to the other, she gradually learns to let go of the need to control every moment of her life and trust the universe to lead her to where she needs to be.
Walk on Water is the account of the slow and deliberate unraveling of a conventional life. Written in journal form, it will speak to anyone in transition, anyone longing to break free of what is considered a "normal" life in order to follow a dream.

Too much patterned fabric.......2007-04-26
This is a good book but it would be easier to pick out a blanket pattern if the pictured blankets used more solid fabric. Some of the colors are bright and fun but the quilt pattern is lost in all the crazy fabric. It gets to be too much and all the patterns start looking the same.
A good beginners book.......2007-03-20
10+ quilts - based on simple piecing squares and novelty fabrics. A good beginners book but not what I was looking for. Reikes shows how simple patterns coupled with novelty and patterened fabrics create an eye-catching quilt, including a number of variations on quilts by simply varying the colour scheme.
- Includes excellent how-to and what-is descriptions for the beginner.
- Covers basic one-patch, framed one-patch, four-patch, rail fence, log cabin, log cabin with dominant centre square, courthouse steps, hourglass, friendship star, shoo fly, esy attic windows.
GREAT book, especially for beginners.......2007-01-15
Tired of giving yet another romper for the family newborns, I decided I could make a quilt. I stumbled on this book, knowing nothing about it. But the directions seemed clear to someone who had never made a quilt -- and, in fact, they were terrific. I later purchased a few "beginner" quilting books, but always came back to this one for clearly described basics. I made several baby quilts from this book, then started enlarging them for lap quilts. The instructions are very, very thorough and straightforward. I also ventured into more elaborate quilting and am now completely hooked.
Quilts for Baby: Easy as ABC.......2006-07-05
This book came on time and in good condition. I'd buy from this seller again.
Smart purchase!.......2006-02-23
This is a wonderful quilt book for beginners and for experienced quilters. Choose different fabrics, add blocks to the length and width, and you will have a quilt for a teenager or an adult. I have all three of Ursula Reikes' baby quilt books and love them all. I just completed a baby quilt last month and have a quilt in process for my teenaged niece with the patterns for both courtesy of Ursula Reikes.

My Favorite Quilting Book.......2005-10-11
I borrowed this book from the library twice in a row, and am finally buying one for myself. Most of my books only get used once or twice, but I've made 5 of the projects from this book and don't see an end in sight. Awesome presentation (fun to read and browse through) and good value (very versatile).
Great book........2005-08-27
I love this book and have already made a baby quilt from it. The instructions were great and easy to follow and the project did not take a long time.
Excelent Quilting Book for Beginners.......2005-08-02
I have enjoyed this book. It is very easy to follow and the quilts turn our beautiful. I would recommend to anyone interested in making baby quilts.

Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners.......2006-07-15
I have made a few beautiful quilts and it didn't take me a long time to finish any of them. I have received many compliments and have been asked if I have been quilting for a long time...Nope, it's only been a few months! The instructions in the book are easy to follow, and the results are fufilling and wonderful! Have fun!
Soo Easy.......2004-12-05
I have had this book for a few years. The quilts are easy and adaptable. It is now falling a part. I need to buy another one.
The colors are great as well.
A real confidence builder!.......2004-01-03
The quilt that sold me on this book is the Attic Windows pattern. It is fabulous and easy. The great thing about the patterns in Quilts for Baby Easy as ABC, is that you don't have to make a quilt for a baby-make a quilt for anyone. Make a quilt as big or small as want. It is the most fun book on quilting and Ursula Reikes makes it effortless.
Easy enough for kids to do.......2003-08-15
I have purchased tons of books for teaching kids how to quilt but none have been as easy as this. The publisher missed out on part of the market. The blocks are so simple the book should be available for children learning how to quilt.
I made one of the quilts based on the X-quisite block. I can honestly say that it took longer to pick the fabric than it took to make the quilt. I finished it in half a day (shhh - don't tell), machine tied and bound.
Perfect for beginners or people who want to make something special without a lot of time and fuss. The blocks rely on really great "conversational prints" to make the quilts work.
Change the print and have a lap quilt for an older person or pet quilt. It is also very easy to figure out how much fabric you need to make the quilt bigger so you can't go wrong.
It isn't just for babies - and it's so easy you will wonder what you were waiting for. If you have made a quilt before, get started today and don't be surprised if you finish it today. If you are a beginner, this is a great place to start.
More Quilts for Baby.......2000-05-03
Great book! I have never quilted before, in fact I just bought a sewing machine for fun 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have made 3 quilts from this book. It is so easy, I am looking for the first 2 in her series.
Book Description
Grade by grade, these groundbreaking and successful books provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of a good education for first to sixth graders.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource..........2007-07-17
I really enjoyed this book. This is a must for parents and teachers of a 6th grader (the grade level really does not matter). Categories covered are Language Arts, Geography/World & American Civilization, Fine Arts, Math, and Natural Sciences. What an excellent resource with key fundamentals in one book.
MTEL saver.......2007-01-10
This is a great book with a wealth of information for upcomming teachers who have to take the teacher tests (this is how I found out about it). There is knowledge from standard English through music and the arts. It covers everything and is great for anyone looking to increase their knowledge of education.
Fine Arts of this book only.......2005-09-09
This book was recommended to study for the CSET test for teacher licensing. I only bought this book to study for the Fine Arts and Music Section of the test. It is very easy to read, however, it is not a revised book like for grades 1 to 4. The reason I say this is because in the visual arts section, the paintings are not in color. I had difficulty trying to understand the lingo of art without seeing the color. Plus I am not a fan of art.
On page 239, the author talks about an African-American artist Henry O. Tanner and when the author writes "it would easy to imagine a story by looking at it"...I looked at it and still didn't understand the story. How can a regular person who has no experience in art be able to understand a painting?
On the same page, the author writes "light filetering in from the left makes a bright glow behind their heads, so that we tend to pay attention to this part of the painting." When I first look at the painting (black and white) I didn't notice the glowing heads...I noticed the father and son playing the banjo because they were only ones in black and white in the center of the picture! Many people have different ways of seeing art and how can an author says that "we tend to pay attention to..."?
A great basic for adding to your child's education at home.......2005-09-06
I found this book and all of the Core Knowledge Series books to be very helpful. They allow parents to see what their child should be getting in each grade and add to the classroom education at home if needed. These books are full of common sense! My daughter has been in public elementary school as well as a private Episcopal Day School and the books are helpful in both circumstances.
Absolutely Essential!.......2002-11-11
This book has completely educated me on what my eleven-year old son needs to know for his 6th year. I have read the book and can say that if everyone in the country knew everything in this book we would all be better off. As a matter of fact, I know very few adults that know one quarter of what is in this book. This has motivated me to add this to my son's daily routine. We work it together and have wonderful mom-son time alone. A book you can't do without!

Customer Reviews:
A fine addition to artist biography shelves.......2002-08-08
The Gag Family: German-Bohemian Artists In America by Julie L'Enfant (Associate Professor of Art History, College of Visual Arts, St. Paul, Minnesota) is a remarkable look at a German-Bohemian family who settled in a Minnesota frontier town in 1879. The Anton Gag family business of art and story-craft flourished among these remarkable individuals that included his daughters, Wanda and Flavia. The Gag Family is a visually pleasing and informative presentation, filled with both black-and-white and color photographs, as well as detailed text that thoroughly addresses the stories behind specific works of art. A fine addition to artist biography shelves, The Gag Family is highly recommended for inclusion into American Art History and Upper Midwest Regional History academic reference collection or supplemental reading list.
