Colonel Stephen Bauer (U.S. First Infantry and Washington DC Old Guard, retired) brings an interesting and informative book with his "At Ease in the White House" (2004). This is a remarkable tale from his almost 20 year experience as a White House social aide.

With this book readers take the intimate tour of the executive mansion with Col. Bauer. We meet many celebrities and dignitaries from the Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush presidencies. This volume (308 page paperback) is a veritable "tell-all" from White House parties, celebrations, and state dinners. Bauer speaks about those quests adored by the social aides (Joey Heatherton, Cary Grant, John Wayne, Diana Rigg, Henry Kissinger, etc.) and those not so appreciated (Ted Turner, Frank Sinatra, etc.).

The good Colonel describes, also, the requirements, application process, and selection procedure for White House social aids. He reviews many White House history-making moments (the Watergate scandal, Ford's media presumed clumsiness, Carter's giving away the Panama Canal, and Reagan's opulence, to name a few). Certainly, this book will influence future history writing. "At Ease in the White House" answers many question about our nation's executive mansion and those who have made history in it.

This is a good book. It is a great gift candidate. It is recommended to everyone interested in the U.S. Presidents, the White House, and American history.

                    Merry Christmas!

Ken Baker was a working-class boy from Buffalo, New York, who dreamed of playing professional hockey; his idea of masculinity was formed by a father who chain-smoked, warned his sons that "girls will ruin your life" (he had to marry the author's pregnant mother), and sneered at doctors' warnings to mend his bad habits--"You gotta die of something." But Baker had a tumor in his brain that flooded his body with the female hormone prolactin; he leaked milk from his nipples and could hardly ever have an erection. His wince-inducing memoir pulls no punches and uses no euphemisms in telling what it was like to be a sexually dysfunctional man in a sex-saturated society. Female readers may take a certain grim satisfaction in learning that men, too, can feel vulnerable and sexually exploited, but most will simply marvel at Baker's willingness to reveal the gory details of his failure-riddled sex life. Although he makes some high-minded claims about the insights he gained from his ordeal ("I was able to journey to a biological place few men will ever know.... My manhood today is stronger because of it"), what's really gripping here is his blow-by-blow account of what it felt like to dread sex instead of chase it, to approach intercourse as a test rather than a pleasure. We can only be relieved that surgery restored him to hormonally normal masculinity at age 27, although the girlfriend who stood by him through it and then listened to him explode with testosterone-charged rage when she complained about his subsequent insensitivity might disagree. Baker's slick prose reflects his background in celebrity journalism (he worked at People and is now a senior writer at Us), but there's no denying the fascination of his bizarre story. --Wendy Smith

                      Book Description

The bracingly honest memoir of a star athlete who lived with a brain tumor that flooded his body with female hormones and sent him into a sexual netherworld from which he would emerge with insights about sexuality and manhood few could imagine.

On the surface, Ken Baker seemed a model man. He was a

nationally ranked hockey goalie; girls threw themselves at him; fans cheered him. Inside, though, he didn't feel like a "man." Baker found that despite his attraction to women, he had little sex drive and even less of a sex life. To his anguish, he repeatedly found himself unable to perform sexually. Despite strenuous workouts, his body remained flabby and soft.

In his eventual career as a Hollywood correspondent for People, Baker found himself challenged and tormented by the sexually charged atmosphere of Tinseltown. His relations with women fractured. Physically, matters would grow more bizarre as he would one day find himself lactating.

The macho culture that reared Baker made it agonizingly difficult for him to seek help. But he would eventually learn that he was suffering from a rare brain tumor that flooded his body with massive amounts of a female hormone. Six hours of brain surgery would accomplish what years of therapy, rumination, and denial could not. Finally, Ken Baker would be able to feel-and function-like a man.

At a moment of heated debate over nature versus nurture, Man Made-like no other book-illuminates the biochemical nature of sexuality. Moreover, it is a fascinating chronicle of growing up sexually as a male in America-and a profound recollection of the pain that accompanies sexual dysfunction in our post sexual-revolution culture.

A prolactinoma is a pituitary gland tumor that produces excessive amounts of the hormone prolactin. This slow-growing tumor accurs in both men and women and is often not identified as the source of health problems until it has grown to a rather large size. In a male, excessive prolactin has an emasculating and feminizing effect. Testosterone levels decrease, the sex drive all but disappears, and erections are practically impossible to achieve. To make matters worse, when prolactin reaches high enough levels in the blood, it can cause males to lactate.

At least 10 years of Ken Baker's life was spent in the confusing world created by his prolactinoma. He was unable to understand why the rest of the guys around him were so sex-obsessed. He could not figure out why 500 sit-ups a day didn't flatten his stomach even though his fellow hockey players were able to build up their bodies with less dedication. He didn't understand why a young athletic male such as himself could rarely ever achieve an erection. He didn't know why his headaches were getting worse, and he certainly had no clue why he was lactating. But to designate Ken Baker's years living with a prolactinoma in his head as an emasculated hell would not do justice to his profound experience. He has had the rare opportunity of observing the members of his own gender with the mindset of someone somewhere between male and female. He saw us for what we are. The obsession with sex, the never-cry-in-public manliness, the male chauvinism, and other characteristics we as males possess, Ken Baker could not relate to. When finally diagnosed and treated (most importantly, when sex drive and erections returned), he was finally able to understand why so many men possessed the characteristics that he had disdained for so long.

This book several other storylines besides the chief one of the author's struggle to understand his "emasculation." He describes his relationship with his father who he loved very much despite the fact that he was often unsupportive, tempestuous, and even racist. The descriptions of his relationships with his brothers invoke both laughter and sadness.

I recommend this book to anyone who accepts the fallacy that male attitudes, sex drive, and the such are solely under the control of the mind and that males just choose to be what they are. Ken Baker is proof that a little hormone called testosterone has quite a bit more to do with it than you think.

As a man diagnosed with the same malady as the author, reading about someone who had endured the same misery as myself was both shocking and reassuring. Ken Baker describes his journey in compelling and sometimes painfully honest prose. His description of a descent into a torturous abyss is rivaled only by his ascent from the very depths of despair. Most of my family and closests friends have read this book and have a new found understanding for the hell some of us have endured. Mr. Baker's book is a worthy example of the power of the human spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Men and Sexuality.......2001-07-18

Many women seem not to recognize that men can go through much of the same sex-related anguish that they themselves must suffer. While we may not be as vulnerable as women, cultural confusion, ignorance, shame and stinging embarassment are all in the mix for most men to whom sex is not always the big joke we make it out to be. It is often a great frustration, even for the well-adjusted. Mr. Baker's story highlights these issues through his own severe case (thank God it's rare) giving hope to anyone who has ever felt like the only one in the world who isn't getting any.

                      5 out of 5 stars Honest,refreshing, humbling.......2001-03-16

Ken Baker's Man Made takes you into the world of a boy searching for his own manhood in a world that tries to dictate it for him. It is well written. Humor is peppered throughout what was a tormenting experience for the author. It is about a disease but it is not a book about being sick, but rather a book about living and overcoming the obstacles life presents.

I could not put this book down. The writing is superb, the story truly amazing. What an incredible story told so well.

Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.

                        5 out of 5 stars A book to treasure.......2004-07-29

                        A true guide on technique,
but also to build excitment and passion for this craft.

2 out of 5 stars neither very big nor very useful.......2002-09-19

Pleasing to the eye but it surely fails to live up to the promise of its title. The instructions on constructing and throwing pots is adequate (though scanty). The sections on other aspects of the craft are more an outline than a guide. Disappointed, I searched our local community college library and found several comprehensive instructional texts on ceramics that were bigger and better than this book - though most were written 30 years ago.

1 out of 5 stars Not a helpful resource for learning on the wheel.......2002-06-24

I was disappointed after receiving this book. While it gave a nice overview of different types of ceramics, it did not give the detailed information I was looking for. The summary on wheel throwing was relatively small and gave virtually no information regarding types of wheels or information on selecting one. The description of the book does seem a bit misleading...leading one to believe that this book would be an invaluable, detailed reference source. I found this not to be the case and would not recommend it for those looking for a reference document.

4 out of 5 stars Very Broadly informative.......2002-06-21

This book covers all major types of clay and ceramic activities. If you are interested in only one type (for example, casting in a mold from clay slip)it may not give you as much information as you want. If you are curious about clay, generally, or want an overview to decide what you might like to try, this is a very useful book. The illustrations and directions are very clear.

I was so absolute beginner in ceramics and afraid of even touching a clay. In the same day I got the book I've made my first piece. And... was satisfied :=)
Guy is great, I've bought two more books by this author, and was thrilled even more, it's great book to begin with, but also to stick with all the time... full of good information, practical advices, things that you just can't find a person to ask and many many pictures that helps so much.
Anyway, you won't regret buying it.

This is a great book for ideas for unusual and creative items to build. Is is NOT a great book for techniques for the average beginner. There is not enough detail as to the actual techiniques. It is a better book for an experienced artisan than for beginners.

I am just beginning to explore clay and so I got this book for myself and for the students in my store who take classes. The techniques are illustrated very well. The directions very clear and photos are great. The only complaint I have is that the projects are a bit out there for me. I mean I'd like to build a great mug, a plate, maybe some platters or something, but some of the wild sculptures are not for me.

                        Hi
I got this book to help me to refresh my clay work. I have done work for yours and have been away from it for a long time now. With grand kids wanting to do the clay now I wanted a book help with the small things I have forgot. It is a great book for that and lot more. All of my tips I knew came rushing back after going though it. I even plan on getting all of his books on Clay.
They really well done and full of great info on clay work. Some I did not even know from back years ago when I was doing clay a lot.
I would say if you want to work with clay this would be the book for you.

                        4 out of 5 stars Worth a look.......2006-07-19

Joaquim Chavarria has produced a well presented book with clear instructions for hand building techniques. The robust hard back cover makes is particularly suitable to a craft envirnoment. The projects suggested and examples shown are inspirational. I bought the book to use with a beginners class but feel that it is more suited for people with a basic familiarity with clay. I wouldn't recommend it to an absolute beginner or hobbiest, but have found it suitable for intermiediate classes and for my own use.

This is a very nice overview of a variety of techniques and some rather complex projects. While it is well illustrated, it isn't for the beginner. I've been turning and hand-building for a couple years (spare time hobby) and there are many projects in this book that I admire but don't quite have the skill set to try to emulate.

I do come back to this book every few months, and always learn something new from it.

If you have other Warshaw pottery books, you may notice the same photos/projects appear in this volume.

I'm a Master Gardener, and I found this book in our "Previously Read Books" sale pile. I kept picking it up to read while sitting in the office, and finally had to buy it and take it home with me.

It's a collection of practical little tips about everything from germinating seeds to keeping deer out of your yard. The tips are written by gardeners for gardeners, and are easy to read, simple, short, and to the point. While they're not necessarily the "thoroughly tested and scientifically approved" methods, they're the kind of wisdom you might receive from a neighbor or from a parent about things to try in your own yard. The focus is on non-chemical solutions, so it's great for people with kids or pets.

                            5 out of 5 stars Bowlby's Contribution.......2006-08-24

This collection of lectures and previously published papers brings together the essentials of Bolwlby's contributions. The first paper summaries his work on the effects of separation of children from their caregivers that was intrumental in bringing ciritical changes in the manner that hospitals and other institutions deal with children's separations from their caregivers. He succinctly summarizes his formulation of attachment theory, which is now regarded as the keystone for understanding infants' early relationships with their caregivers. As a bonus, there are two papers on psychoanalysis as a science that forshadow the need to bring together psychoanalysis as a discipline and the emerging knowledge about brain development that is being acquired by neuroscientists. It is a pleasure to read this small volume. Joe Palombo

I have only gotten about 1/3 of the way through this book so far. What is keeping me from reading more is the technical aspect of his writing style. The book goes through case studies and presentations the author has put together... I'd rather have a more easy to read style.

Freud saw the development of the ability to form affectionate bonds through the dark glass of psychoanalysis. Bowlby and his associates have given us the ability to see the development of inter-personal relations with the clarity of the scientific method and with deep human understanding. Anyone interested in improving our ability to love one another will find this book useful.

                              Book Description

Would Vincent have been Vincent without Theo?

Theo: The Other Van Gogh is a revealing biography of Vincent's stubbornly loyal younger brother. Shedding light on their profoundly intimate relationship, born in boyhood, the authors tell the poignant story of two brothers who had a profound impact on the art world.

Theo van Gogh, like Vincent before him, followed in the family tradition of art dealing and joined Goupil & Cie, one of the leading international art dealers in 1873. Goupil, recognizing his ability, transferred Theo from The Hague to Paris in 1880, where he developed influential friendships with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Emile Bernard, and other emerging stars of the Parisian avant-garde. Shrewdly, Theo persuaded Goupil to exhibit Seurat, Signac, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Redon, Sisley and Degas, and purchased works by Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec for his own collection. His keen instincts regarding art would only be recognized long after his death when the world would discover and eventually greatly admire the artists he exhibited and supported.

In 1881, following a rupture with their father, Theo became Vincent's sole source of financial support despite his meager salary. Following the death of their father in 1886 Vincent and Theo lived together in Montmartre, the wild neighborhood in Paris that was home to scores of cafés and cabarets frequented by artists and writers. Theo's private life in Paris was extremely dissipated even by the Bohemian standards of the fin-de-siècle, and it was during this period that Theo presumably contracted syphilis, symptoms of which plagued him his entire life. Despite health problems and financial difficulties, he never deviated from his devotion and support of his brother. Their voluminous correspondence reveals Theo's encouraging words, giving his brother advice regarding his life and his art.

Backed by previously unpublished letters from the Van Gogh Museum archives, the publication of Theo brings a fresh eye to the family dynamics from which these two extraordinary beings emerged, and explores the unwavering, but complex affection between the two brothers. Once the younger brother who looked up to his successful elder but over time Theo became Vincent's caretaker and ally. If today we know the transcendent works of Vincent van Gogh, it is only because of Theo. Theo: The Other Van Gogh brings out of history's-and Vincent's shadow-a man as fascinating for his character and ability to love, as for his unique contribution to the history of art.
