Tico culture, salsa music, traditional beliefs, unique fauna and a stunning landscape are just some of Costa Rica's attractions. This diverse country is now one of the top destinations of eco-travelers, not to mention a hot spot for retiring North Americans. Costa Rica Alive! explores it from top-to-toe - mountains, beaches, cities, villages, preserves and more.
Customer Reviews:
Way off the mark - doubtful author visited many places........2006-05-11
This book is inaccurate, opinionated and presumptuous. So much so I truly doubt the author visited many of the places along the Pacific coast. He turns his nose up at many towns and places that are the essence of Costa Rica's unique Pacific coast.
Most people who can relate to this author's approach would do best to go to a "resort" on Maui. If you want to see Costa Rica my recommendation is to buy the Lonely Planet guide.
Vast amount of information.......2004-05-16
The author's vast amount of information on any needed facts, from climate to clothing and accommodations, to tours and taxis, is wonderfully shared. Help is here for anything and everything a visitor requires. The book's beautiful color photographs give the reader a taste of Costa Rica.

A jam-packed take-along tote.......2003-07-25
Costa Rica Alive! is a comprehensive guide which is a jam-packed take-along tote and providing virtually everything the destination-oriented reader needs to plan a trip to Costa Rica, from the natural settings which lure first time visitors to the basics of choosing an appropriate outdoor experience. Add some color photos and maps throughout and you have a truly "user friendly" travel guide which is a 'must' for those who would travel to Costa Rica.
Book Description
A poignant true life story which begins in the early 1900s when, infant Maggie, rendered deaf from spinal meningitis, struggles to survive during a time when the handicapped were derided and formal education for the deaf was controversial. Her family raised her on instinct alone. Maggie did not go to school until she was 9 years old. She developed a strong will to learn, a sence of competitiveness and a dedicated spirit. The story watches her grow through adolescence, become a loving wife, devoted mother and exceptional grandmother. She touched may lives and became a true inspiration in a world still tinged with bigotry.
Customer Reviews:
I truly enjoyed this journey........2001-03-06
Silent Journey is a delightful look at the challenges of living with deafness throughout the 1900's. My heart broke with every story of discrimmination they faced, and rejoiced each time they overcame another obstacle. I couldn't put this one down and finished it in 2 days!
An inspirational true story.......2001-02-01
In times where family values are often questioned, this story demonstrates that a strong family can overcome any challenge.
It was amazing to read; the different struggles of two deaf parents raising 3 "hearing" kids and the creativity they used to overcome typical family problems.
This book will really hit home, a must read for every family member!!
Bravo!

If You Think Cats are Dumb, This Book is For You.......1999-11-17
The author reports on several experiments which demonstrate that cats have an intelligence that rivals that of chimps. The book itself is very readable.

You'll need this if you're building a Spanish home !.......2007-01-11
If you are building a Spanish home and we are, then this book will provide you with a wealth of ideas about what to do beyond the 'box of the casa.' Filled with brilliant photographs of terraces, swimming pools, fountains, outdoor rooms, columns, entrances, furnishings, use of paint, etc. you will refer to this book over and over again as you design and continue to decorate your dream home.
Beautiful color photos!.......2007-01-05
The photography is excellent and the ideas abound. It is a book that's fun to thumb through and colorful. I enjoyed it! It's sister publication is just as good.
Must Buy Mexican Design Book.......2006-08-06
I have bought more than a Dozen Mexican Design Books already. And none can compare to the Traditional Mexican Style Exteriors and its Companion Book Mexican Style Interiors by Donna McMenamin.
It is a wonderful book! You will not need any other book if you are planning on redecorationg your house. But, even if you will not decorate your house, this Book(s) are a worthy read. The Pictures are wonderful. Giving detail to what is really Mexican.
Beautiful and Inspirational.......2006-07-29
Every time I re-do a room or make a home decor purchase these days, I'm looking for things to make my house look more Mexican. This book, and its companion volume "Traditional Mexican Style Interiors" are wonderful reference books for anyone looking to copy that style.
If you're just a fan of Mexican style, or have been to Mexico and want to have a way to go back without leaving your easy chair, this book is fun to read and magnificent to look at. Although it emphasizes exteriors (facades, architecture, etc.) there are photos of gardens, courtyards, and plenty of other spaces that you could create on your own property, even on a very modest budget, and without knocking the house down and starting over.
Mexan Exteriors.......2005-09-12
Fantastic book for anyone who wants to explore the Spanish Revival look. The book contains great pictures that gives the viewer a true sense of the Mexican-Spanish influence on American architechture.
I used to book to design my own backyard. Explaining the style I was looking for to landscape designers would have been nearly impossible without this book. Now, that my landscaping is done, the book compliments my coffee table nicely and is often times a great conversation piece. A must for anyone who loves Spanish Revival.

Book Description
$21.95 hardcover * 1-58685-032-6 * March 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 in, 96 pp, 135 Color Photographs, Rights: W, Design In their sixth book, Mexican Details, designers Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr travel through Mexico and the Southwest in celebration of the character-rich details of Mexican furniture, architectural elements, and handcrafted accents that resonate with beauty and originality. From chip-carved benches and hand-hewn tortilla tables to painted trunks and carved-stone moldings, the soulful nature of Mexican design abounds. Decorative accents include intricately woven textiles, glazed ceramics, wooden masks, and folk art objects that bear evidence of the hands that crafted them. Carr and Witynski reveal in vibrant detail how mesquite doors can be newly fashioned into console and coffee tables, iron window grilles are converted to headboards, and stone water filters blossom as flower planters. These once-utilitarian elements take on creative new roles in modern-day homes, adding beauty and character to every corner. Featuring brilliant close-up photographs by Witynski, Mexican Details is alive with creative and fresh Mexican elements.

I have just bought a house in Mexico, and find this book most inspirational for my remodelling work and for any future building! Super authentic ideas.
I Love this book!!.......2004-11-25
I have checked out as many interior design books on Mexican style as I could find and being a researcher by profession that was a lot. This is my favorite--the colors of the rooms are warm and vibrant and exactly what I had envisaged in my mind's eye. I loved each page and would recommend buying this if you had to pick just one on this subject.

Book Description
This is a contemporary, fresh look at cultivating herbs. These beautiful pages reveal everything about growing and caring for herbs, along with inspirational ideas for using them. It makes herb growing accessible to all, including urban dwellers who grow them in pots. A special directory features more than 100 herbs, including those made popular by Native American herbalists, while other information covers planning, planting, and realizing a herb garden, with seasonal guidelines. Culinary, medicinal, cosmetic, and aromatic herbs are all discussed. Great “instant” information throughout plus “10 Best” lists make this manual unequalled.
Customer Reviews:
Nice overview.......2004-06-06
This is a nice compendium of information on the planting, propagation, harvesting, and use of a wide variety of herbs. Basic gardening is covered for situations including every style from formal gardens to containers on a balcony. Ideas and/or "recipes" are provided for some herbal teas, foods, crafts, and beauty treatments. Half the book is taken up by an "encyclopedia" of herbs, which, though hardly in depth, covers many species (not just the super familiar ones.) The whole book is appealingly laid out and full of lovely photographs. Quite enjoyable.
Book Description
It's time for Honey Maloo to go to school, but she does not want to leave her mom. She tries everything to stay home, from sneaking off the school bus to pretending to be sick, but finds there is no way to avoid school. Honey's mom, her teacher, the music teacher and friends help her to get involved with school lessons and activities so that Honey learns that school can be fun!
Separation anxiety is common in young children and can make going to school a trial. This charmingly illustrated tale teaches children coping skills and reminds them that they can love, even miss, their parents and still enjoy school. In addition to providing specific tips for both children and parents, I Don't Want to Go to School offers a great tool to open a dialogue with an anxious child.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent source for little ones!.......2007-01-05
My daughter started to have issues with separation anxiety when she began first grade. After starting the new year, she started refusing to go to school and would cry for hours. It broke my heart to see her this way, and after speaking to her teacher and vice principal, we agreed that it would take some time and that we would all have to work together. I saw this book online and decided to give it a try. First of all, it is geared towards children. The pictures, as well as the story, helped my daughter relate to the main character. We even tried some of the things that the character did to help her feel secure in school. My daughter would bring a picture of us to school, or bring a small teddy bear to look at when she started to feel sad. We also cut a piece of one of my shirts and she would use it to not only dry her tears, but to carry in her pocket. In addition to the book, my daughter did see a child psychologist twice. Although it was a long and tough struggle, I am happy to say that it is now 4 months later and she is doing very well and has adjusted to first grade. What a relief! I recommend this book for those of you who find yourself in the situation that I was in. It is a great supplement to have while working towards helping your child gain that inner strength and courage. I advise you to use as many resources as you can.
Cute & Helpful.......2006-11-11
My children really liked this book - it is sweet. I would recommend it if your child is having a little school anxiety.
It's About Time..........2005-12-05
It's about time that a book such as this one hit the shelves!! I work in the public school system and see 'separation anxiety' on a daily basis. Not only do children identify with the main character (what a cutie-pie!), the helpful tips in the book provide parents with the support they need to 'let go'and. I've noticed that many of the foster children in our program enjoy reading this book. All of the adults at my school have purchased copies of this book for their children, as well as, for their families. I can't wait to read more books by this author!!!!!
Wonderful Book for Children Who Miss Their Moms! .......2005-10-12
I have a 3 year-old daughter who had a hard time adjusting to leaving me and going to pre-school. I have read "The Kissing Hand", a sweet book, but this one is much more specific to the feelings that children can have when they don't want to leave their Moms. My daughter loved the Honey Bee character. The book helps children to help themselves and it tells you exactly how to do it. The illustrations are adorable, too!
Like a Security Blanket!.......2005-10-12
I have four children. My youngest started kindergarten this year and was extremely nervous about it. He's very clingy and very used to just being with me. Although he had attended pre-school, the idea of going on a bus to a "big school" frightened him. I heard about this book from a friend of mine and read it to my son a few days before he started school. He really enjoyed it and asked if he could bring it into school with him!The teacher read it to the class and raved about it too. This is definitely a beautiful and bright way of easing a young child's anxiety (and mom's anxiety!) about going off to school.

Customer Reviews:
It is really true!.......2000-12-21
I enjoyed this book because after visiting Madagascar and returning 5 times it is the most accurate book about what it is really like to be a guest in this beautiful country. I appreaciated the authors respect for the Malagasy people that I have come to love and admire. This is a great treatise in cross-cultural adaptation, wandering through a culture in which you have no clue what the rules and values are about.
Hilariously troubled journey through Madagascar........1999-09-25
The author and her 14-year old daughter Rachel travel through Madagascar, (an island off the coast of East Africa), on foot, hitchhiking, by bus and by taxi. The unusual number of misfortunes besetting them had me hold my stomach with laughter, or cover my mouth in fear. -- Dervla Addict.
Interesting and Entertaining.......1999-06-25
This is the second Dervla Murphy book that I've read, and I really enjoyed it. I especially loved the way that she managed to work a great deal of history and basic information in without making it seem that way. For those who haven't read it, this is the story of a trip that the author and her daughter make through Madagascar. It is funny, interesting, and fun to read. I especially appreciated the way that Murphy generally managed to avoid the condescending view of people in Third World countries that becomes so obnoxious after awhile. I also appreciated the way that she was honest about mistakes that she made and seemed quite able to laugh at her own errors. Much of the information seems accurate as well; when I was most of the way through the book I read most of another book giving a basic overview of Madagascar, its history, culture, and etc. and the majority of it fit very well with what Murphy discribes here (the differences could probably all be explained by the fact that this other book is several years newer). While I have never been to Madagascar, this book made me feel like I know it and the world a bit better.
Very Entertaining.......1999-04-29
Super travel book about a little known island. The author is a veteran Irish travel writer who takes her teenage daughter on a hiking trip across Madagascar. This book is simply loaded with all kinds of interesting history and lore. Excellent travel writing, bibliography, map, loved it.
Sad, Unappealing Book; Good for Swatting Mosquitos.......1998-11-17
Beyond doubt one of the most unappealing books about Madagascar. In it I found little of the Madagascar that I know. The book focuses on the witless pursuits of a new-age tourist. I am astonished that Dervla Murphy manages to survive her many trips. Not to be recommended as a first book about the red isle for the visitor: read it when you return and cringe.
