        Book Description

How an image-obsessed president transformed the way we think about politics and politicians.

To his conservative supporters in 1940s southern California, Richard Nixon was a populist everyman; to liberal intellectuals of the 1950s, he was "Tricky Dick," a devious manipulator; to 1960s radicals, a shadowy conspirator; to the Washington press corps, a pioneering spin doctor; to his loyal Middle Americans, a victim of liberal hatred; to recent historians, an unlikely liberal. Nixon's Shadow rediscovers these competing images of the protean Nixon, showing how each was created and disseminated in American culture and how Nixon's tinkering with his own image often backfired.

During Nixon's long tenure on the national stage—and through the succession of "new Nixons" so brilliantly described here—Americans came to realize how thoroughly politics relies on manipulation. Since Nixon, it has become impossible to discuss politics without asking: What is the politician's "real" character? How authentic or inauthentic is he? What image is he trying to project?

More than what Nixon did, this fascinating book reveals what Nixon meant. 30 photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Pulitzer Prize Historian: It's "The Best Analysis of Nixon".......2005-02-01

I was intrigued about this book when I heard it praised in a lecture by Walter Macdougall, the Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian. He published his lecture and what he said was, "What image will posterity nurture of Nixon? The best analysis is David Greenberg's Nixon's Shadow, published last year. Greenberg describes five Richard Nixons that beguile and perplex the American people."

But after reading it, I agree. Greenberg is younger than other historians who have written about Nixon and so he is, arguably, more objective. This book gives each point of view its due - those who hate Nixon, those who think he's an elder statesman, those who think he is a nutcase. It is as much a book about American political and social life and all of its strife and controversy in the years 1946-1974 (and after) as it is about Nixon himself. It doesn't just praise or bash Nixon - it explains WHY people praised or bashed Nixon.

Greenberg has really invented a new genre of history here. You might call it Rashomon Plus. He shows you Nixon from different perspective but then goes on to unpack these different images of Nixon and explain why they have all taken root in our political mindset.

A couple of the other posts apparently don't like Greenberg because he is liberal. That may be true, but this is not a liberal attack on Nixon, in fact he is more critical in many places of Nixon's critics than he is of Nixon. The "liberals" who came up with Tricky Dick are faulted for sneering at the middle class. And the radical left that attacked Nixon on Vietnam are faulted for being in the grip of conspiracy theories at times. The book gives Nixon's supporters more than their due. (In fact Walter Macdougall is a Conservative.) This is a highly orginal work of history.

1 out of 5 stars A simplistic and narrow look at Nixon's image and legacy.......2004-11-27

David Greenberg's 'Nixon's Shadow' is an interesting and easy read but hardly complete. He is quick to label those who applaud aspects of the Nixon presidency `loyalists' and dismisses most of their interpretations as being partisan, naïve, or worse, comparing them to holocaust deniers. Furthermore, the author himself is in denial of FDR's, Truman's, Eisenhower's, Kennedy's, and LBJ's abuses of power. All of which made up the institution known as the imperial presidency that supposedly came crashing down after Watergate. Now, with that being said, Greenberg would probably contend that I believe Nixon is a victim and am a staunch Nixon loyalist...both of which are untrue. You cannot place such a diverse group of people into a labeled compartment.
Finally, Greenberg's admiration for Bob Woodward, which he tries to conceal, jumps out at the reader throughout the entire work. Since he worked for Woodward on another book, it is apparent that the controversial reporter, whose book 'The Final Days' has been discredited by most historians, influenced Greenberg's judgement. In fact, Greenberg thanks Woodward for his advice and assistance on Nixon's Shadow. The best historical works on Nixon will not be written until baby boomers who have a stake in the outcome, such as Bob Woodward, have passed on.

3 out of 5 stars Tricky Dick unveiled?.......2004-02-26

Greenberg is a good chronicler of events and few occasions in Nixon's life, however incidental, is missed here. The book is long on details relating to the professional side of Nixon, but I was disappointed that there was a lack of personal anecdote within the covers of the book. Of course RN was an inscrutable, moody, paranoid and ultimately unknowable man, but I would have liked more material on Pat Nixon, as well as Tricia and Julie. Greenberg quotes copiously of Nixon's own self-serving memoirs but doesn't include much primary source material on Nixon as a human being.

The strong points are the chapters on Watergate and the gradual demise and destruction of RN as President. The ancillary characters of Watergate all get their just due: Halderman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean are described in sometimes sympathetic but occasionally, brutal detail. Reeves shows masterfully that Nixon dissembled and lied to the bitter end, not to the American people, but most disturbingly, to himself. It's well-written and full of detail, just don't expect much on Nixon the man. Otherwise, an enthusiastic thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Complexity means we much search some more.......2004-02-08

Greenberg's work is the first I have read that expores the relationship between image and history in an interesting and inviting manner. I think one of the reasons that Nixon invites so much controversy was that he was a complex and contradictory man. He just does not seem to fit. Watergate destroyed him, but you have conservatives railing against him and liberals saying he did good work and vice versa. Greenberg attempts an overview of all these competing images and it is surprising how often the image being projected says more about the writer than Nixon himself. A very interesting book that deserve patient study.

1 out of 5 stars Another Elitist "Does" Nixon.......2004-01-24

Here we go again.... It's become a "right of passage"
in the leftist community: if you want to be invited
to the best wine and sleeze... I mean cheese parties,
write a book smearing Nixon. Richard Nixon was
a complex human being, with both good and bad
sides to him, just like you and me. He had an
indelable impact on the development of the nation,
in both positive and negative ways. He is far too
much damned for his flaws, and far too little praised
for his successes. This book is just another stale
hatchet job, written by a hack who will be forgotten
as quickly as yesterday's toast; just another necrophiliac
having his way with a dead man. It's easier to
regurgitate leftist party hate speech than to actually
research the man's life and be honest about it.
Don't waste your money on this drek; it isn't
        even good for toilet paper.

Helen Keller would not be bound by conditions. Rendered deaf and blind at 19 months by scarlet fever, she learned to read (in several languages) and even speak, eventually graduating with honors from Radcliffe College in 1904, where as a student she wrote The Story of My Life. That she accomplished all of this in an age when few women attended college and the disabled were often relegated to the background, spoken of only in hushed tones, is remarkable. But Keller's many other achievements are impressive by any standard: she authored 13 books, wrote countless articles, and devoted her life to social reform. An active and effective suffragist, pacifist, and socialist (the latter association earned her an FBI file), she lectured on behalf of disabled people everywhere. She also helped start several foundations that continue to improve the lives of the deaf and blind around the world.

As a young girl Keller was obstinate, prone to fits of violence, and seething with rage at her inability to express herself. But at the age of 7 this wild child was transformed when, at the urging of Alexander Graham Bell, Anne Sullivan became her teacher, an event she declares "the most important day I remember in all my life." (Sullivan herself had once been blind, but partially recovered her sight after a series of operations.) In a memorable passage, Keller writes of the day "Teacher" led her to a stream and repeatedly spelled out the letters w-a-t-e-r on one of her hands while pouring water over the other. This method proved a revelation: "That living world awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free! There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers that could in time be swept away." And, indeed, most of them were.

In her lovingly crafted and deeply perceptive autobiography, Keller's joyous spirit is most vividly expressed in her connection to nature:

Indeed, everything that could hum, or buzz, or sing, or bloom, had a part in my education.... Few know what joy it is to feel the roses pressing softly into the hand, or the beautiful motion of the lilies as they sway in the morning breeze. Sometimes I caught an insect in the flower I was plucking, and I felt the faint noise of a pair of wings rubbed together in a sudden terror....

The idea of feeling rather than hearing a sound, or of admiring a flower's motion rather than its color, evokes a strong visceral sensation in the reader, giving The Story of My Life a subtle power and beauty. Keller's celebration of discovery becomes our own. In the end, this blind and deaf woman succeeds in sharpening our eyes and ears to the beauty of the world. --Shawn Carkonen

        Book Description

One of the "hundred most important books of the twentieth century" (New York Public Library), finally published in complete form.

The story of Helen Keller, the young girl who triumphed over deafness and blindness, has been indelibly marked into our cultural consciousness. That triumph, shared with her teacher Anne Sullivan, has been further popularized by the play and movie The Miracle Worker. Yet the astonishing original version of Keller's and Sullivan's story, first published in 1903, has been out of print for many years and lost to the public.

Now, one hundred years after its initial publication, eminent literary scholar Roger Shattuck, in collaboration with Keller biographer Dorothy Herrmann, has reedited the book to reflect more accurately its original composition. Keller's remarkable acquisition of language is presented here in three successive accounts: Keller's own version; the letters of "teacher" Anne Sullivan, submerged in the earliest edition; and the valuable documentation by their young assistant, John Macy. Including opening and closing commentary by Shattuck and notes by Hermann, this volume will stand for years as the definitive edition of a classic work. 10 b/w illustrations.

I recall my surprise on discovering that a mysterious hand had stripped the trees and bushes, leaving only here and there a wrinkled leaf. The birds had flown, and their empty nests in the bare trees were filled with snow. Winter was on hill and field. The earth seemed benumbed by his icy touch, and the very spirits of the trees had withdrawn to their roots, and there, curled up in the dark, lay fast asleep. All life seemed to have ebbed away, and even when the sun shone the day was.

A deaf dumb and blind girl, but no pinball. Helen Keller, bereft of the senses that your average person is able to utilise, has to learn other ways to communicate. She is instrumental in forming systems that will lay the foundation to enable other people so afflicted to do the same, with the work she does herself, and with her tutors.

        Well worth a look.

3 out of 5 stars Sightless and unable to hear, but hardly mute........2007-05-20

Helen Keller gives a sweetly innocent rundown of her life in this brief book. It's just enough to get a glimpse into her well publicized transformation into a girl lost in her own inability to communicate to a wonderfully prolific soul; a person who changed the world. She is disarming and self aware and isn't afraid to gloss over a little bit of the struggle to paint a journey of searching that led to many rivers of experience. It's a charming book and if one is curious about Helen Keller it is best to 'hear' the words from the author than another source.

The Story Of My Life was a life-changing book for me. The reason for this is because I never thought that a person who had no power could do so much and have so much of it. As soon as I read this book it made me feel that no matter how small you are you can accomplish your dreams and goals. My opinion about this book is that it taught me that even if you are disabled, like Helen Keller you can still do many things. I think what Helen Keller did was outstanding because even though she was blind, deaf, and only a kid she did some indescribable things. I think this book will be a page-turner for people in middle school and up. This has inspired me to do anything and believe that I can accomplish many goals that I have.

4 out of 5 stars The Story of My Life .......2006-12-15

"Helen, you are charged with plagiarism of a whole book. Your sentence is to never see Miss Sullivan again." The Story of My Life is an autobiography by Helen Keller. Helen Keller was a blind and deaf girl who came over all these odds by learning how to read lips with her fingers, how to speak, how to read Braille, and understand things like a normal child. Her teacher throughout her life was Miss Sullivan. She taught Helen Keller just about everything she could when it came to communicating. Because of how she overcame her handicaps, many people, including celebrities, wanted to meet her and have her as a friend. I recommend this book if you like learning about amazing people.

Helen Keller wrote this book on her own. If you can think about how hard it would be to write a book when you are deaf and blind, then you will be amazed at how she did this. She wrote a book in her early childhood, but apparently it was read to her when she was younger and it was very close to the same thing, so the institution she was going to accused her of plagiarism. She could not see Miss Sullivan again as long as Miss Sullivan worked for the institution. So, Miss Sullivan quit her job and moved in with Helen and her family and taught her until she was older.

Helen Keller got to do many things a normal child would not. She got to travel the world with Miss Sullivan because everybody wanted to meet her and celebrities would pay to fly her out to where they lived. She also had to go to the institution for the deaf and blind, which was far away. Many people there were also amazed at how Miss Sullivan had taught Helen to communicate.

If you read this book, also note how many things Miss Sullivan taught Helen. Miss Sullivan taught Helen how to communicate with everybody. Even though Helen has been deaf since she was 3 months old, she learned how to pronounce words so she could talk to people. The hardest thing was probably to teach her to read Braille, which would have been hard because she would not understand the letters at first and what they meant.

Helen Keller is one amazing person. She overcame two very harsh defects, being blind and deaf. Any person having just one of those defects may never overcome these illnesses but she did. She not only overcame them she was taught how to communicate even though it was along and struggling process. Helen Keller is an amazing person and you should read the book she wrote.

While teaching an 8 year old girl to crochet, I found she was left-handed and that I would need a special book for her. I found the book "Learn To Crochet In Just One Day/Left Hand" by Jean Leinhauser at Amazon.com. This is the perfect book for a left handed child to learn crochet and she is very pleased with it. Thank You.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent instructions for beginner!.......2006-01-19

I was attempting to learn crochet from a neighbor who learned it from her grandmother without the benefit of knowing all the terms or even all the various stitches. Feeling confused, I did some research and found this booklet.

Wow, what an amazing booklet! It was like a light bulb going off, finally understanding the basic stitches, how to count properly, where EXACTLY the hook should go through, and WHY the stitches require an extra chain (or 2 or 3) at the end of a row. It suddenly all made sense! I passed it on to a friend, and she had the same reaction. Now we can actually crochet something, instead of just focusing on trying to learn a few stitches.

I highly recommend this booklet to those who have never done crochet work or those who are beginning and need some clear, precise instructions.

4 out of 5 stars great for beginners.......2005-11-28

I purchased a couple of other learn to crochet books and they don't compare to this one. The pictures are very easy to follow. The only downside to this book is the patterns they include are pretty outdated.

5 out of 5 stars BOOKS AS DESCRIBED AND FAST DELIVERY.......2005-09-26

VERY PLEASED WITH THE TRANSACTION. BOOKS WERE PERFECT AND DELIVERY WAS VERY FAST.

                5 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK!!.......2007-05-28

This book is fantastic - gives you all the details from when babies are just a mear thought, to when the real little munchkin is in your arms... All the details you don't normal hear about when speaking with doctors etc. This is a womans real life account of her own experiences and what she went through - it's so easy to read you feel as if you are sitting there with a friend chatting for hours.
Well worth the purchase - it provides you with contacts/groups/places to go all listed at the back - it would be great if I could find a book like this for a lesbian mother to be in Australia. AMAZING BOOK!!! THANK YOU!!

Any woman, lesbian or straight, who wants to conceive will benefit from reading this book. You'll find out about alternative treatments to help you conceive.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a very thorough source if you're a lesbian or single woman trying to concieve.......2007-03-27

I bought this book partially because the Rachel Pepper book was not available immediately and I'm very pleased that this is the book I ended up with!

Coming from her experience as the head of Maia Midwifery in Northern California, Stephanie Brill covers not only the anatomy and physiology of what you need to know, but also the emotional aspects of trying to get pregnant. This book covers many topics - options of ways to track your fertility, increase your fertility, the pros and cons of known donors versus frozen sperm, even the logistics of inseminating, whether at home or at a clinic.

The only reason I have given this book 4 stars out of 5 has to do with the fact that this book covers a lot of alternative health treatments which may be difficult for people who are more aligned with Western medicine and do not believe in herbal treatments, acupuncture, and the like.

Best of luck to any woman who gets this book and is trying to conceive!

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-02-26

This guide is a very thorough collection of information for lesbians contemplating starting a family. Even though the references included are US specific, the information was still relevant to me as an Australian, and gave me a sense of where to go for further information. I especially loved the information on non-birth parent feelings and anxieties etc. I would highly recommend it.

i had been trying to get pregnant for a year. i bought this book, read it cover to cover and was pregnant within 2 months. i swear by this book. i honestly don't think i'd be pregnant if i hadn't bought this book. it's not just for lesbians, either. i bought it for my straight friends, who are also trying to get pregnant.

4 out of 5 stars Good informative book.......2006-12-18

I love this book! I felt like it was speaking to me, and it validated my own experience since I have started researching artificial insemination. The book gave me good information about my diet, such as giving up caffeine and sugar. I also got good information about how to keep track of my fertility. We are using a known donor, so it helped to have the information about relationships with known donors and ways to manage them. There was information there that I had not seen anywhere else that validated my own experience.

I tend to distrust western medicine especially when it comes to women's bodies. The idea of needing tons of medical interventions in labor seems ridiculous (of course I have not been in labor-so this is only my own observation). I do think that women have been having babies for millions of years-and from what I have researched as long as you are healthy and fit, labor should not need to be lying on your back with labor inducing drugs and an epistiotimy (sp???). So I appreciated the information about home births, water births, and pain management.

I did not give this book five stars because even for me-the natural hippie-there was some stuff that was a little too out there. When they discuss charting they discourage ovulation kits, and taking your temperature-but they encourage charting the phase of the moon! They also have a slight paranoid streak by encouraging you to not use household cleaners, eat all organic food, and only drink water that has been filtered. A little impractical for my lifestyle. But it's informative and helpful just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Informative but alarmist........2005-04-11

I like to eat brown rice and tofu, I am comfortable with alternative family structures including families with more than 2 parents, I live in the Bay Area, I plan on having a home birth, I drink herbal tea, I occasionally I even do yoga. Yes, it's true, I'm almost a hippie.

Yet this book was way too touchy-feely and anti-western medicine even for ME!

For better or worse, this is THE MOST INFORMATIVE BOOK on donor insemination and queer womens' pregnancy issues that is available. It is full of information from the perspective of experienced midwives who have multiple children - A source far more trustworthy than the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians" (a recent first-time mom).

I personally believe home births are far safer for most low-risk pregnancies than hospital births. And I think lesbian conception is over-medicalized by a very male-centered Western medical system. However, I part ways with the authors there. Because unfortunately, as another reviewer says, they "throw the baby out with the bathwater." They have this supposedly "non-judgmental" attitude yet their opinions come across VERY strongly in this book. Those opinions include unmedicated home birth, "natural" conception and midwife-led pre-natal care being better than other options. This may inspire some women to consider this approach - But it may also alienate many women who need this book.

My greatest wishes are that this book covered some issues specific to people of color, talked more explicitly about parenting roles in butch/femme relationships, discussed disabled and chronically ill womens' pregnancy experiences, and more specifically addressed issues of sexual abuse survivors and pregnancy. These are major omissions, in my view. The book is definitely geared towards middle class moms with very

I appreciated the books' inclusion of bisexual women and the few mentions of pregnancy issues for butch women. I also think their approach towards conception is much smarter and more well-informed than that of many "fertility specialists" and OB-GYN's as well as conventional wisdom.

This book left me feeling totally alarmed and paranoid about the many things that could go wrong with my pregnancy or keep me from getting pregnant in the first place (Oh my God! We use chlorine bleach when we wash our clothes! I'm going to have a miscarriage!) But I will be using much of the information to help conceive my first child.

Read this book. It's full of very valuable information that respects our identities, lives and families as queer women. But take it with a grain of salt and don't regard it as The Bible of Lesbian Conception & Pregnancy. Because there's no such thing. Each woman is different and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

1 out of 5 stars Some helpful pregnancy advice but too alternative.......2004-04-12

Unfortunately the politics of this book are a turn off, the author has little regard for the conventional family model of two biological parents being bonded to child

                5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-02-28

This was the best resource out there for me and my partner. It was an excellent reference book, with the most useful information being about the process of conceiving, tracking your cycles, and issues like how to time insemination if you're using frozen sperm vs. fresh sperm, etc.

Although there's info out there on artificial insemination, pregancy using sperm from a male partner, etc. this book puts all the information female couples need into one resource. Other books on these topics are for heterosexual couples and either don't address the decisions or don't address the various medical implications of those decisions for lesbian couples.

And, overall, it was just nice to have a book that was written for me and my honey. There was a place for her and a place for us written into those pages that meant we didn't have to translate all of the time into our own needs and experience.

(BTW- I didn't read anything that seemed negative in the book, so I was surprised to see that in other reviews. It's more that the authors take the approach of describing how to be healthily involved in getting the info you need to give birth to a healthy little one.)

Hope this is helpful. Good luck to you!

1 out of 5 stars Outdated viewpoints with little substance backing them.......2003-06-15

I would have given this book zero stars if I could. I recommend *against* reading this book.

The authors express a mistrust for modern medicine that throws the baby out with the bath water. While I agree with them that many aspects of the standard hospotal birth are based on (male) doctors' convenience, these authors do not acknowledge any positives coming out of that knowledge base. The authors also paint the vast majority of sperm banks as homophobic, which I simply don't think is the case.

Additionally, I find it disturbing that the authors promote a variety of alternative parenting arrangements (co-parenting with 3 or 4 adults involved, for instance) without discussing the many different ways it affects the child. If they were going to tackle such complex child-rearing topics, I would prefer that they had a child or family therapist consult with them on the book.

Mabel Dodge Luhan was a hostess and visionary. She made her home in Taos, New Mexico a quiet haven for artists. Several painters, photographers, and writers vistited Mabel's home to reflect, rest, and work. This book is a combination of stories about the house and the visitors who stayed there. It contains many interesting stories about the events that occured with Mabel's home, and the people who were touched by it.
