Comprehensive and up to date.......2001-07-17
This book was indispensible for my recent travels through Alberta. It contains detailed descriptions of all the best places to go, including some great small town festivals that I would of otherwise missed. The book also has many hikes included, mostly in the Canadian Rockies. I budgeted to spend around $50 a night for motels, and found that this book described many good choices in this price range but also includes campgrounds and more expensive places. Overall, I found it to be very current, not only for restaurants and the like but also coverage of issues such as overcrowding in the national parks, which I found an interesting addition.
5 Stars Plus!.......2000-08-23
This book and its companion volume to British Columbia are undoubtedly the best travel books I have ever used. I just returned from a two-month trip that took me to the Calgary Stampede, through the Rockies, up to Yellowknife and through British Columbia to Vancouver. Alberta is an amazing place to visit and by buying this book I was able to enjoy it all the more. The author has obviously done his homework and describes the region in a colorful style but also with an incredible amount of detail. By using these books I managed to plan my trip before leaving home, even down to where I wanted to eat. The other guide I had with me was rarely used. I also found local information centers sending me along well worn tourist paths, and while this book covers all of that side of Alberta it also led me away from the masses to areas of equal beauty. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to Canada!!
Don't travel without it!.......2000-01-13
This was an excellent guide for family travel. It provided first rate information on dinosaur adventures in the Red Deer region to Waterton NP to the Canadian Rockies including Banff and Jasper and all points in between. Includes tidbits of local history and written in such a user friendly manner that by the middle of our three week adventure we were fondly refering to it as Mr. Moon, as in, what does Mr. Moon reccommend for dinner. If you are traveling to the Canadian Rockies, the British Colombia guide by this publisher makes an indispensable companion to the Alberta Guide.
An A+ Guide to the Canadian Rockies.......1999-04-02
I couldn't believe all the information that this book contained. It told us of all the great spots in Banff and we didn't miss a one. This was our first time there, but because this book was top notch, we're planning our return within a few months. I would highly recommend this book to anyone traveling in the Canadian Rockies. It's better than the best!!
This book was outstanding!.......1998-06-28
This handbook was packed with great spots to stop. There were many places listed that the AAA guidebook missed, and all were fantastic. The book was sectioned well, breaking up different areas into day-trips. If you are going to Alberta for the first time, this is a MUST BUY!

Book Description
Volume 18, covering part of the final session of the First Congress, shows Jefferson as Secretary of State continuing his effective collaboration with James Madison in seeking commercial reciprocity with Great Britain by threatening--and almost achieving--a retaliatory navigation bill. During these few weeks Jefferson produced a remarkable series of official reports on Gouverneur Morris' abortive mission to England, on the first case of British impressment of American seamen to be noticed officially, on the interrelated problems of Mediterranean trade and the American captives in Algiers, and on the French protest against the tonnage acts. All of these state papers reflected the consistency of Jefferson's aim to bolster the independence of the United States, to promote national unity, and even, as his report on the Algerine captives indicates, to lay the foundations for American maritime power.
This volume reveals Jefferson's continuing interest in a unified system of weights and measures, his effort to create a mint, and his concern over executive proceedings in the Northwest Territory. It contains also his suggestions for the President's annual message and his first encounter, at the hands of Noah Webster, with Federalist ridicule of his interest in science. Despite his heavy official duties and the confusion into which his household was thrown when 78 crates of books, wines, and furniture arrived from France, Jefferson never failed to write his promised weekly letter to his daughters and son-in-law under the alternating plan which obligated each of them to write only once every three weeks. The record of this time of extraordinary pressure shows that Jefferson retained his usual equanimity except when, after a full two months, he failed to receive any scrap of writing from the little family at Monticello.

Morton Kondracke chronicles his wife's 13-year battle against Parkinson's disease with the same attention to nitty-gritty details and shrewd understanding of how power works that distinguish his political commentary. Kondracke doesn't airbrush how horrible it is to have Parkinson's (the squeamish should avoid the passages about Milly Kondracke's two rounds of deep-brain surgery), or how difficult it is to live with someone who does (the mere recitation of his caretaking activities will exhaust most readers). He provides unvarnished accounts of the battles among members of the Parkinson's Action Network and other disease activists competing for limited federal research funds, until they got real and decided to fight to double the National Institutes of Health's budget so everyone would get more money. And he refuses to offer a feel-good ending charged with false hope; the book's closing pages include a grim account of the Kondrackes' discussions about what to do if she becomes unable to swallow. (They settled on refusing the feeding tube and allowing her to starve to death, which "is not painful if the patient doesn't take liquids.") Offsetting this bleak material is a vibrant, loving, and equally candid portrait of the indomitable Millicent Martinez Kondracke, who began up-ending the admittedly self-absorbed, drivingly ambitious Kondracke's life from the moment they met in 1966. He'd planned to marry an Ivy-educated heiress who could further his career; instead he was swept away by a Mexican Jewish American firebrand who challenged authority on everything from a botched car repair to the school system's poor handling of their daughter's dyslexia. Seeing how powerful she once was, we share her anguish as she descends into disability--and her husband's hope that, despite all the current scientific projections, research will provide a breakthrough in time to save Milly. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Morton Kondracke never intended to wed Millicent Martinez, but the fiery daughter of a radical labor organizer eventually captured his heart. They married, raised two daughters, and loved and fought passionately for twenty years. Then, in 1987, Milly noticed a glitch in her handwriting, a small tremor that would lead to the shattering diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Saving Milly is Kondracke’s powerfully moving chronicle of his vital and volatile marriage, one that has endured and deepened in the face of tragedy; it also follows his own transformation from careerist to caregiver and activist, a man who will “fight all the way, without pause or rest, to ‘save’ his beloved Milly.” *
(* Linda Bowles, The Washington Times)
Customer Reviews:
Saving Milly, a Parkinson's Story.......2007-03-31
Excellent book, well written. Anyone who has, or is spouse or friend of
someone with Parkinson's should read this book. It will make you cry and then make you mad, really mad. The U.S. Government should read it and see
how poorly funds are distributed for aid and research. It's a shame.
Outstanding interview + reader's guide in paperback edition.......2005-03-22
Paperback includes both a reading guide and a compelling interview with Kondracke by his comrade, Fred Barnes. In particular, it is interesting to learn about what Kondracke wishes he had done a bit differently in telling the story. In a sense, Kondracke stands outside the story to evaluate how faithfully he told it, an extraordinary exercise.
Maybe this book is less about Milly and more about "saving Milly" and what that meant: pragmatically, socially, politically, spiritually. It's a useful distinction to bear in mind. There is some background information about this brave and lovely woman, but inasmuch as the topic is an encounter with a disease she has, this is not a biography of Milly. It is a picture of sickness and its impact: not of the woman, herself.
There are plenty of books about people with illness: fewer, by far, about the very flawed, though devoted, individuals who care for them. Kondracke seems no longer to flinch at the shadows of his inadequacy and pomposity, which might encourage the reader to consider a similarly brave examination of conscience. Many of us will be called to be caregivers. This is no map, but it is a clear narrative of costs, rewards, pain, and delight that bubble up in the dynamic between cared-for and caregiver.
I liked the book a lot and absolutely recommend the paperback edition because of its additions.
Saving A Friend.......2005-03-14
I had known Milly Kondracke for a quarter of a century before her death last year of Parkinson's disease. She was my mentor. Morton's memoir of their marriage is touching, well-written and a quick read.
My only regret is that Morton glossed over Milly's wonderful gift as a social worker/therapist in a paragraph, for that was her career identity. Milly did her own mourning when she had to cease her private practice due to her illness. Still the book gives you a taste of her personality, one of those persons who were larger than life.
"Saving Milly" achingly illustrates the struggle of a family who must care for a loved one through a long term illness and raises the question of politics, funding and ethics for those with incurable illnesses. I highly recommend this book.
Why I Will Never Complain Again.......2004-12-31
Reading this book was like sitting at a kitchen table and letting Mort just pour his story out over a cup of coffee (like Mort, I am a recovering drunk so we can't do it over a beer). His is a story of passion, love, commitment and clear proof that there is nothing in my life I can ever complain about again.
Millie is an extraordinary woman, her struggles with life, faith and Parkinson's come alive in this real narrative. You can't help but feel her pain, and Mort's immense love and commitment to her.
I have always liked Kondracke as a pundit - I am a liberal republican, he a conservative democrat. We share similar feelings about nearly every issue except who we are most likely to initially vote for in a Presidential race. His struggle to get government officials to hear his plea for funding pissed me off - and I am sure you will share his frustrations in the reading.
Most critically, you will absolutely be moved by the openness, honesty and devotion in this story.
Extremely moving story about a couple and their struggle.......2003-07-11
Morton Kondrake's book is about much more than his wife Milly's Parkinson's disease. It's also about their life together, their marriage, the differences that caused friction between them, Kondrake's struggles in his career and those to overcome his own weaknesses, including, for a time, alcoholism. What emerges is a story of quiet heroism, both his and Milly's, as she defies the odds and continues to prove that her will to live is greater than her despair. Kondrake also writes about the politics of research and fundraising for various diseases, and how some diseases have more cache than others, even if the disease garnering more print and air time afflicts far fewer people than other devastating ailments. This may not come as a shock to people but it is still important so that we can all do what we can to campaign to make disease research and funding more equitable.
I was most touched by Kondrake's unsparingly honest account of his own shortcomings as a man, a husband, and father, and how Milly, and eventually, her Parkinson's disease, made him grow into a far greater man than he was before. The fact that this is a true account makes this book very significant, and more moving than any fiction could be. It's impossible not to read it without tears.
Product Description
For many years a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, Morton Kondracke recounts his passionate and volatile marriage to Millicent Martinez, the Mexican-American daughter of a radical labor organizer. In 1987, after 20 years of marriage, Milly learned the shattering news that she had Parkinson's disease. Despite the devastating physical and emotional effects of the disease, for which a cure has not yet been found, the marriage grew stronger and deeper. Kondracke's moving and remarkably frank narrative chronicles his own transformation from a careerist to a caregiver and disease activist whose religious faith grew more profound as he tackled his wife's illness. In turn, he explores the realities of disease politics and argues for increased government investment in medical research.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful to a new quilter.......2007-08-08
I found this book helpful because it gives you an idea how a block looks with other blocks like it, or other kinds of blocks. It also gives you an idea how different color(lt, med, dark) choices would look in the same block.
Block Party Review.......2006-11-10
Great book! Has so much information and many blocks to choose from. A must for any piecing quilter.
Best block book ever.......2006-03-09
I have over a dozen reference type books for block design and construction, but this is the best one by far. The rotary cutting directions are amazingly clear and simple. This is the one I go to first every time. I buy this as a gift for all my quilting buddies.
packed with information and inspiration.......2005-09-23
i hesitated in buying this book--i have so many books and magazines with block designs. but, after looking through it, i had to have it.
some of the other reviewers have noted some of the minor drawbacks--for instance, the size of the blocks. however, if you want to put your blocks on point, 9" is a very useful size. and yes, it would be nice to have even more examples of quilts using the blocks, but i could say that about almost every quilt book i own.
one of the best things about this book, which was first published in 1998, is that it does NOT give in to the current hysteria for 'quick piecing.' now, i use some of the time-saving techniques circulated in the past few years--i strip piece when it will really save time, i chain piece when it will really save time--but the current mania for not learning how to cut triangles to fit, for instance, flying geese, is driving me up the wall. not only do i hate the pointless waste of fabric, but the encouragement of ignorance, laziness and bad craftmanship is worse. and i really hate those unnecessary seams that limit the choice of quilting designs.
in addition, the author offers traditional and original blocks that are based on more than just squares and half-square triangles. the quilter is given a choice of rotary cutting or using templates (and sometimes using templates is quicker and easier than using a rotary cutting ruler).
which brings me to the charts--which are absolutely wonderful. everything is in them--illustrations of the sizes and shapes of the pieces, measurements for strip cutting, choice of rotary or template cutting, how the pieces might be sub-cut--these charts are the best i've seen. there are illustrations in grey tones of different value placements for each block. the piecing order is illustrated. the only thing lacking is a table of enlarging or reducing percentages for different sized finished blocks.
there is a section which shows some of the blocks put together to show the secondary patterns, another section is called 'having fun with assymetrical blocks.' there are several other sections dealing with design matters, including sizing with straight or diagonal settings and sashing.
templates are included, and they are drawn with points AND cutting lines for those who don't like points on their pieces. THAT'S thoughtful, detailed planning.
the projects that are included are wonderful, as you would expect from marsha mccloskey. even the color choices for the blocks are inspiring.
this is not a book for an absolute beginner, although there are very good sections about cutting and sewing. it does not include detailed instructions for construcing a quilt, though, again, what is included is first rate. however, for anyone who has made even a couple of pieced blocks, this is a bonanza.
definitely belongs in any quilter's library.
Excellent Resource.......2005-04-09
I have read hundreds of quilting books and this book is terrific. It is full of information and is a great resource on creating blocks. Wonderfully thorough and clear.
Book Description
Do I prune my hydrangea in the fall or do I wait until early spring?
When is it safe to put out tomatoes?
Can I divide iris now?
If you have ever asked yourself questions like these, Month-by-Month Gardening in Michigan is for you. Gardening is a journey, not a destination. The day-by-day gardening experiences - planting a few onion sets in the first warm afternoon of spring … the surprises - a purple crocus before the snow has even gone … the satisfaction - fresh green beans on the dinner table, or tomatoes, bright and red, safely in quart jars … these are the things that keep the gardener coming back year after year.
Month-by-Month Gardening in Michigan is packed with information that explains what needs to be done and when it needs to be done in the Michigan garden. Topics include:
- The most effective planting techniques.
- How and when to prune.
- The best season for fertilizing your lawn.
- The differences between bare-root, container, and balled-and-burlapped plants.
- Eleven plant categories, including Annuals, Bulbs, Herbs, Vegetables, Houseplants, Lawns, Perennials, Roses, Shrubs, and Trees.
- Twelve monthly calendars for each plant category - 132 calendars in all! - that make is easy to find the proper gardening advice.
Whatever your gardening interests or the time of year, you can take the guesswork and mystery out of gardening. You will become a more satisfied gardener … and your garden will show it!
Customer Reviews:
Usefull for timing reference is LP.......2005-09-26
The timing info in this book is useful, if you live in Michigan's average area. Skip it if you live in Northern Michigan. Very little of the timing will apply to you. One other thing I didn't like was how many chemicals (of various sorts) they tell you to dump on your lawn. Every month it seems like they're telling you it's time to put one or two more on your lawn or in your beds. This type of gardening is not for me, and it scares me to think that people just strating with gardening might read this and think that they are all necessary.
Organization could be better.......2003-05-03
The information seems pretty thorough, but Fizzell has organized the book mainly by types of plants -- vegetables, annuals, perennials, trees, and so on -- and then month-by-month under each group. So when you're trying to figure out what to do in May, you have to look up "May" under "Annuals," then "May" under "Perennials," then "May" under "Trees" .... I'd much rather he'd used the months as main categories, and each type of plant as a subcategory of those.
And Fizzell is pesticide- and herbicide-crazy! Forget it if you're an organic gardener. (I'm still looking for a book on organic gardening in Michigan.)
Useful guide to the Michigan gardening year.......2001-03-23
"Month-By-Month Gardening in Michigan" is split into chapters on types of plants, e.g. Annuals, Bulbs, Herbs, Houseplants, Lawns, etc. Each chapter is then split into the following subchapters: "Introduction", "Planting Chart", "January", "February", ... "December". Here is how to use this book:
Suppose you live in Michigan and want to know whether to prune your climbing roses in March. Turn to Chapter 7, "Roses" and the subchapter called, "March". This subchapter has sections on "Planning", "Planting and Transplanting", "Rx Care for Your Roses", etc. In the section entitled "Pruning", the author recommends, "Prune climbing rose plants to fit their supports. Remove thin canes, and pinch back overly vigorous canes to force branching."
This book is very easy to use, as you can see from the above paragraph. I used to live in Winter Hardiness Zone 3 near Cadillac and am now a Zone 6 gardener down near Lake St. Claire , so I know from experience that you might have to adjust Fizzell's time-table of recommendations by as much as three or four weeks, depending on your specific zone.
Organic gardeners probably won't want to use some of the author's "Rx Care" suggestions (Fizzell recommends actual products such as "Orthene" and "D-Con"), but other than that, "Month-by-Month Gardening in Michigan" should prove useful to all of us who garden in this state, whether it be the 'helpful hints', the planting charts, or the month-specific instructions for tending to your water garden.
This is a handy reference for any Michigan gardener (like myself) who needs an occasional reminder not to start her pepper plants in January.
A useful guide.......2000-04-05
This is a useful guide in an easy to follow format. Month by month comments and useful advice especially for Michigans' unique gardening needs.

This book tells it all..........2005-10-25
I bought this book for my young bachelor son; but after going through it, I am going to keep it and buy him another one. It is up to date on cleaning products, and tells you about so many things that most other books of this type don't tell you; such as, diagrams on how to iron, how to sew. It tells you when fruits and vegetables are in season and how to tell when they are ripe. I think it is the most complete book of it's kind that I have ever seen. It would be excellent for newly weds, bachelor sons or daughters just getting their 1st apartment. And it is great for someone that has been housekeeping for over 30 years...like me!! Buy it, you won't regret it!
Excellent book.......2005-08-24

Book Description
Brilliant Swedish artist Carl Larsson's story, according to editor John Z. Lofgren, "is about a man and his soul, his roots, his friends, and his enemies. Important in art history, it also offers a fresh look at the cultural scene in Scandinavia before and after the turn of the century. Highly articulate, Carl Larsson is honest with himself and with the reader. It is easy to identify with the characters as Carl Larsson relates his journey through life."

Book Description
This book is both an examination of one of the dominant figures of twentieth-century British politics, and a contribution to the understanding of political leadership and Conservative ideology. It reinterprets the career of Stanley Baldwin, Conservative leader 1923-37 and three times prime minister, in terms of his construction of a "public character," his exploitation of the new mass media, and his exposition of a distinctive Conservative doctrine and language. Baldwin's remarkable ascendancy is shown to have been based on his manipulation of widely-held "national values."
