    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-08-01

We used this book on a recent trip to St. Louis, and it was extremely helpful. I particularly liked how it devoted an entire chapter to traveling with children in St. Louis - so we were able to choose family friendly restaurants throughout our stay. I also noticed that some listings were repeated in different places throughout the book, so it was less likely that you would miss something if you looked in the "wrong" place. (eg. family friendly restaurants were also listed in the general restaurants chapter)

I would recommend this guide to anyone planning a short or extended stay in the area.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book About The St. Louis Metro Area.......2005-06-23

THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO ST. LOUIS is a great book for anyone interested in domestic travel. This book tells you where to find the most enjoyable attractions on both the Missouri and Illinois sides of the St. Louis metroplex, and also tells you where to get the best- and healthiest- food to eat. There is also a long discussion of different neighborhoods, as well as a section on both childhood and post-secondary education. The radio station list is also comprehensive. True, there is nothing about the area's shopping malls, but that's a minor quibble, as this is a great book that almost anyone can enjoy.

        Book Description

A pictorial biography by a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian that presents Ulysses S. Grant in new and fascinating ways.

Acclaimed historian William S. McFeely has assembled a dramatic collection of photographs that reveals the people, places, and events that shaped the life of one of the towering figures of American history. Treating seven aspects of Grant's life (1822-1885), McFeely gives us both the private man and the public figure. Grant's view on slavery, his love life, the houses he lived in, his understanding of war—particularly the Civil War—and the trip around the world that he and his wife Julia took (with remarkable illustrations made at the time) are all here. We watch photographers create a hero out of an obscure officer and enhance our understanding of Grant's remarkable Personal Memoirs. A beautiful volume, essential for the library of any Civil War buff, this book offers a wealth of images that illuminate the man and his times in a way that words alone cannot. 100 illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars As a husband, good. Photos bad.......2004-05-02

I wish they hadn't marketed this as a photo book because there aren't any. At least there aren't many photos of Grant and the ones published are really bad. I was expecting some nice rare ones, but there weren't any.

McFeely likes to write about Grant's private life, which is OK with me. Grant was one of these types of men who were uxorious around their wives, she was his best friend, lover, helpmate, a person he could talk to and make love to at the same time. They seemed very much in sync with one another and that's always nice to read a great love story. McFeely is less solid on everything else and I really didn't care much about Grant's travels. I did like the section on Grant's autobiography, which I have read and it's great. So 4/5 stars for this new effort.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting writing.......2004-04-14

I am a fan of William McFeely's other book on Grant. It's the one Grant biography I can read without getting a headache because he writes so nicely and fleshes out the human Grant. This book picks up where the other ones left off. There are chapters on Grant as a traveler, Grant on the slave issue and most of all, Grant as a husband. McFeely always had a special interest in Grant's relationship with his homely wife, Julia. Those two had special chemistry and McFeely makes hay out of that. All in all, a really good book; the photos are below average and not many of them, but Grant as a person comes out of the pages with a vibrant bang.

        2 out of 5 stars Not a home run.......2004-01-09

I agree and disagree with the previous reviewers. I think it's an exaggeration to say McFeely writes breathless, perfect prose. He's a great writer but not as fabulous as that. Having said that, the words are the only thing to recommend the book. The photos are non-existent! I don't know what the publishers were thinking. I have seen all the photos in here a million times. The cover photo is the same photo used on many other US Grant books. What is going on?

OK, on to Grant's marriage. I take no issue with what is presented. Basically McFeely says the thing which made the Grant marriage work was great sex and he proves how Grant did enjoy this to the hilt. Why not? When you are as rich, as successful and as famous as Grant was in his heyday, I would imagine physical relations would be high on your list. Kissinger said power was the ultimate aphrodisiac. McFeely doesn't criticize Mrs. Grant. He says she is silly, but the other reviewer blowing their fuse about this is the silly thing. He likes Mrs. Grant, he points out she had many strengths, which she did. She was a great wife and helpmate to her hubby.

The slave chapter I enjoyed. I enjoyed the chapter on his travels, which I knew nothing about. I agree that the chapter on his marriage is the heart, the soul of the book. I wish I had such a good marriage in my two efforts. Hallelujah to Grant. But the photos here are really, really bad.

        4 out of 5 stars Pretty book.......2004-01-07

I don't know if the pictures of Grant were rare. I don't know that many pictures of him. But I will say the writing is very good. I know books about Grant from Mr. Catton and Mr. McFeeley writes as well, if not better than the former writer. I liked the way the book was arranged. I would've liked more pictures instead of drawings.

P.S. Julia Grant WAS a silly woman. McFeeley says many nice things about her. It's not character assassination, he admires her.

4 out of 5 stars OK book with some nice writing.......2004-01-06

First, I wonder why the "Reader from Canoga Park, Ca" always refers to the other reviewer and her reviews of Grant books? Every time she reviews a Grant book, this gal butts in to talk about her, NOT Grant. Talk about being obsessed, Canoga Park. My suggestion: recover from your jealousy.

The book is excellent. McFeely writes real well. The photos are disappointing and I didn't like the etching. McFeely won the Pulitzer Prize so he's obviously a good writer.

        Book Description

Heather Whitestone. Her name has become synonymous with incredible determination and unprecedented achievement. In Listening with My Heart, Heather tells her own story and the stories of others who have inspired her, proving that with hard work, perseverance, and faith, each of us can move mountains. Profoundly deaf since she was eighteen months old, Heather strove to live a normal life, and refused to listen to the voices of discouragement that many of us so often hear, no matter what problems confront us. She wouldn't listen to the doctor who said she wouldn't develop beyond third-grade abilities, or to those who said she would never dance ballet, or even speak. She did, however, hear the encouraging spirit of her family and followed the guidance of her own heart's dreams. Struggling through her difficulties, she was sustained by every success--no matter how small--and ultimately became Miss America 1995. Though she is disabled, her incredible gifts have inspired many throughout the world, and in Listening with My Heart she at last shares her life-changing wisdom.

        5 out of 5 stars great story.......2006-03-13

really good book. only thing not perfect is the quality of the pictures in the softcover version. Otherwise great.

        5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2006-01-11

Struggling to come up with title for this review shouldn't have happened, for "refreshing" describes this enjoyable read.

Heather is an honest, open and Christian person. Her humility to share her fears, exasperations, even private darker moments is refreshing!

And then there is her deafness. She is honest and open here as well, lamenting at times the deaf culture, but also showing sensitivity to their plight.

I'm a page-bender, underliner, note-taker kind of reader who continually marks passages in the great reads that I have, and this book has so many of them. I wanted to communicate them in this review, but will choose to just give some salient phrases from them so that you'll read this marvelous book: "going to bed means getting some sleep"; returned autographs which included Scripture quotes; Miss America wearing a clown on her head; dreaming and God's Word.

Haven't read such a refreshing work in quite some time; treasure as a precious Christmas gift that it was.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspirational book.......2004-08-31

This was a really good autobiography about Heather Whitestone, former Miss America. She talks about her struggles as a deaf person and her experience as Miss America, and how God has worked in her life.

I really enjoyed her book. I like how she was so open about her struggles with a deaf person. She didn't feel like she fit into the deaf world or the hearing world. Yet, she continues to persevere, and with God's help, she overcomes her obstacles to become Miss America. And she is open with her struggles as Miss America, too. She talks about the need for privacy and her struggles with criticism from the press.

        A great, inspirational book.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story.......2002-10-22

Because I have a grandbaby who was just diagnosed with profound deafness, I have been reading all the books I can about how deafness affects those who are deaf. Heather Whitestone's story was so inspirational and gave me a great deal of insight of how it feels to be deaf and different from the hearing world, and to understand what obstacles might arise, and to take heart knowing that most can be overcome if you have faith and the fortitude to meet the challenge. Her story also gives insight into the debate between the use of sign language, oral education, and cochlear implants, and the prejudice that still exists among some people in the deaf culture. A truly informative and inspiring book.

        5 out of 5 stars Heather's an Inspiration!.......2000-08-04

I am inspired by Heather Whitestone when I read this book...she is an inspiration to many deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals like myself. She taught me in this book that no matter the outcome, anyone with a disability can do just about anything in life...even marrying a good, handsome man named John McCallum and being the first deaf Miss America. This Christian autobiography is one of my favorites because it is very interesting to read and there are good pictures of her and her husband, family, even deaf actress Marlee Matlin. I even noticed by reading this book is that Heather and I have things in common with each other such as we both grew up as oral deaf. I love this book and I know you will too...you will enjoy it as much as I did.

-Written in an easy anecdotal style with plenty of examples to illustrate the points being made

-Based on the author's many years of experience in keeping ferrets

Graham Wellstead's long experience in keeping, breeding and working ferrets makes this an invaluable guide for the beginner and novice handler.

Realizing that the passing down of information on ferrets between generations was in danger of dying out and finding little written on the subject, the author was inspired to write this book. Since it was first published, ferret keeping has grown in popularity and The Ferret and Ferreting Guide, written in an easy, humorous style, includes anecdotes drawn from the author's many years of experience.

Advice is given on selecting ferrets, their care, feeding and housing, along with how to breed them. Training ferrets to hunt and the techniques and use of equipment is fully described. In addition, this book includes a guide to the legal aspects of hunting.

I bought the Sew Fast Sew Easy book for my girlfriend and she's been making all sorts of stuff. On the company website they have online classes. She took the men's underwear class and now I'll never run out of briefs. She also did the lacy tanga panty video for herself. Thank you Sew Fast Sew Easy! So I got her this book to move onto. I hit a home run with it. She now watches project runway with a new appreciation.

I love this book. I'm totally stoked on the projects I've created with it. I've learned a lot from this book unlike another boring sewing book my mom gave me, "Sewing for dummies". This is a rad beginner book as well as alterations and fittings. Any level of sewing should be able to get something from it. I also think the Sew Fast Sew Easy book is a great book to have first.

I got the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and loved it so I bought this book also. It was cheaper than some of the others and well worth it. I had a really good time doing the projects in this book and learned some more on tailoring and heming. This would be a great gift for anyone who likes to get creative and mess around.

Hip, frank, contemporary, and clever, The Big Bang is a savvy sex book, colorful in language and viewpoint. Authors "Em & Lo" of Nerve.com invite you to relish sex, appreciate your partner(s), and keep a sense of humor. This is not your parent's sex lecture: it's irreverent, chummy, and downright fun. Part 1, Sex for Beginners," covers the basics, from understanding orgasm ("a few blissful seconds of rhythmic muscle contractions that release all that pent-up sexual energy back into the universe, like a whistling teapot from Xanadu") to techniques of all kinds for pleasuring yourself or a partner. Part 2, "Sex for Advanced Swimmers," discusses female ejaculation, fisting, sex toys, and power play. Part 3, "Sex for Winners," promotes safer sex, with a frank, detailed discussion of STDs ("You know why flings are called flavors of the week? Because each one might have a different STD."). Whether you want to learn how to "house clean" for anal sex, choose a lubricant, use a harness, or "paddle the pink canoe," you'll learn how here. All consensual sex acts are treated with delight and respect. The glossy book is illustrated with drawings of positions, sex organs, and sex toys and color photos of sexy young men and women, most partially clothed (lots of bare breasts and buttocks), in various configurations and activities. Refreshingly honest, direct, and funny, The Big Bang is perfect for sexual novices with open minds and equally fine for spicing up the sex lives of those who think they know it all. --Joan Price

Em & Lo make addressing sex (and more importantly, all issues surrounding sex) clever, entertaining and approachable. As someone who enjoys reading about and talking about sex (almost!) as much as having it, I found this book to be immeasurably helpful when attempting to broach the subject of sex with more conservative, shy or inexperienced friends. While most similar books come on too strong, (you know, the kind you hide in the back of the bookshelf...) The Big Bang is funny enough, informative enough, edgy enough and just offensive enough to make it a great book to leave on the coffee table or to give to friends without fear of getting a disgusted facial expression in return. If you've never owned a book on sex before, this is the best place to start. If you've owned a thousand sex books and don't own this one, you're insane.

There are only three species that indulge in sexual activities for pleasure, amongst which, humans probably differ most significantly in two factors. First, they have the most complex social constructs involving them; and second, they are probably the most hypocritical about it. Although people have explored it at depth and in as creative manners as can be thought of, few have dared to speak of it as this book. Those new to sex, it enriches with a plethora of information and guides them to make their journey as pleasurable as ecstasy gets. Those already in deep waters, it shows them ecstasy of several unexplored areas. And those explorers out there, it takes them on a tour, connecting them with several thoughts, lucidly put together. Ditch your inhibitions with your Dad's copy of 'The Joy of Sex' and dive in. To the authors: Applause n Kisses.

5 out of 5 stars A Sex Guide For Everyone..........2006-03-24

I thought I knew it all. I have been reading about sex for the last decade or more and gotten a chance to prqactice some of what I know, but this book really made me think twice. For one thing, it is written like the hip textbook you never got to read in high school. It also has a chapter on everything you could want to know about and then some. While I loved the fact that it gave some ideas of things to do, it was more the facts and basic information that I found really helpful. I loved this book so much, I have loaned mine to a good friend and bought a copy for another friend of mine. Because when it comes to sex, you can never know enough.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Depressing Pictures.......2006-01-08

The text itself is funny and frank and really gets down to business. It will tell you everything about everything. It's an overall excellent reference book and would recommend that everyone have a copy to refer to whenever necessary. However, they used models for the pictures throughout the book. You feel like you don't deserve to have this wonderful sex unless you first are 5'10" tall and weigh 105 pounds, which is bizarre since it's wrote by two women. You'd think they'd get some realistic models, both male and female. Everyone who's taken a look at the book (male and female) has made similar comments. It's depressing.

                    Book Description

Joseph Cornell is a legendary yet living presence in American art. His famous boxes, with their ineffably perfect choice of elements--the stuffed birds, the buttons and toys, the fragments of old theatrical posters, the poignant allusions to the worlds of the nineteenth-century ballet and opera--are some of the most recognizable signatures in all of twentieth-century art. From this extended selection of his diaries and other written material, Cornell emerges as a deeply dedicated and conscious artist, though one whose personality was every bit as unusual as many had perceived. Cornell used his diaries as he used his boxes, to capture and preserve his passing feelings, his momentary urges, and his anguished hesitations. He was an incessant and brilliant recorder of his thoughts as he considered his art or traveled to New York to haunt the antiquarian bookstores and shops where he collected material for his boxes. We see here his deep immersion in French symbolist poetry and his intense interest in his surrealist contemporaries. We see also his plangent yearning for "les sylphides," the fairies of the ballet world who seemed to be reincarnated for him in the form of waitresses, dancers, actresses, and shop girls in his own world. Cornell corresponded with an astonishing range of people including Parker Tyler, Marianne Moore, Tony Curtis, Robert Motherwell, and Susan Sontag. His letters were often sent in the form of collages, and several of them are reproduced in this book. Mary Ann Caws has edited these diaries from a vast collection of scribbled notes and journals left by Cornell. Her text, which provides an extended introduction to the life and work of Cornell, traces the unique correspondence of the life, the art, and the writings of a great American artist. Foreword by John Ashbery; introduction by Robert Motherwell. 24 b/w illustrations.
