      Insight's City Guides combine stunning photography with literate text and a smattering of basic travel information. The Insight Venice guide is worth adding to your bookshelf, but its practical advice is getting a bit long in the tooth and its heft makes it less than ideal as a take-along guide. - Durant Imboden, Venice for Visitors, http://govenice.miningco.co

                Book Description

                "We are not the sum of our possessions. They are not the measures of our lives. In our hearts, we know what matters. We cannot hope only to leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account. We must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend; a loving parent; a citizen who leaves his home, his neighborhood, and town better than he found it."

                -- from President George H. W. Bush's Inaugural Address, January 21, 1989

                A charming collection of excerpts from the former president's speeches and other writings, Heartbeat reveals the basic ideals and beliefs that have served George H. W. Bush throughout his public and private life. He speaks often of what he calls "heartbeat." It is a simple word -- a code word -- referring to personal bedrock values concerning service, duty, honor, friends, faith, and particularly family.

                As the Bushes prove themselves to be one of the most important political families in U.S. history, this warm and revealing look into the former president's guiding principles could not come at a more important time. Culled from Mr. Bush's speeches over the course of his presidency and beyond, Heartbeat discloses a surprising personal side to the forty-first president -- a warm, witty, and expressive man.

                In chapters such as "1989: A New Breeze" and "1993-2001: Did It with Honor," the book features entertaining, eloquent, and emotional excerpts from the former president's words...

                "Sure we must change, but some values are timeless. I believe in families that stick together, and fathers who stick around. I happen to believe very deeply in the worth of each individual human being, born or unborn. I believe in teaching our kids the difference between what's wrong and what's right, teaching them respect for hard work and to love their neighbors. I believe that America will always have a special place in God's heart, as long as He has a special place in ours...."

                "Being president does have its advantages. And this is true: I have a TV set there in the White House with five screens, one big one in the middle, four small ones around it. Now I don't have to miss the nightly news when I watch Wheel of Fortune."

                In this single, remarkable collection, Mr. Bush's speeches, interviews, and other statements paint a poig-nant portrait not just of the former president but of a man and a family.

                5 out of 5 stars Core Values: Faith, Family, and Friends.......2002-04-14

                "Heartbeat" is a collection of excerpts from the speeches and writing of President George H. W. Bush. The compilation delineates those "core" values that defined the policies and personal goals of Bush's presidency. The book is organized into chapters corresponding to his presidential years (1989-1992) with an additional chapter concentrating on his post-presidency. The writings,which characterize the "core" values consistently addressed, are presented in sub-sections in each chapter. These are: Faith, Family, and Friends; The Vision Thing; A Legacy of Service; and In the Arena. This is a convenient organizational tool which allows the reader, should he/she choose, to follow a particular thread through each of the four years of the president's term. Of course one may choose the conventional method of a chapter by chapter reading. I actually did both, occasionally flipping back and forth through the chapters as I read to remind myself of a particular point previously made.

                I found the book to be absorbing and entertaining reading. Having visited the Bush Library in College Station, Texas, I was not surprised by the sense of honor, duty and love of country that permeates the text. Nor was I surprised and the wonderful rather self-deprecating sense of humor that pops up in sometime unexpected places.

                All-in-all this is an effortless way to get an elementary grasp of the issues and complexities which confronted America at a time when events leading to The World Trade Center atrocity were already continuing to build.

                5 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute to a great man!.......2001-11-13

                The author, Jim McGrath, has compiled a well-edited look at the life of the former President. Readers who want a "behind the scenes" look of life in the White House without all the needless commentary should purchase this book immediately!! This is a must read for anyone interested in political life.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent book that provided much comfort.......2003-11-13

                As a young woman with a mother who has paranoid schizophrenia, this book was invaluable to me. My mom was missing for 12 years, and I received this as a gift not long after finding her (about a year and a half ago). It was personally very comforting for me to read this wonderful book, and I would recommend it to anyone. Ms. Holley's close bond with her mom reminded me of the bond I had/have with mine, and the inherently conflicted feelings that result from that bond.

                5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2002-10-23

                My Mother's Keeper is an excellent autobiography/biography in one of a mother and daughter and their separate and entwined lives. I am a mental health RN and have been studying about schizophrenia. This book has helped me see in places I have never been able to see into before. I now have a broader perspective of schizophrenia and how families must feel also. Ms. Holley's writing is easy to read and follow. So much so, that it is very hard to put the book down. This is definitely a must read for anyone who wants to find out more about schizophrenia.

                5 out of 5 stars Moving telling of a difficult story.......1999-06-02

                This was an exceptionally well written memoir, one that must have been very difficult to write. Ms. Elgin moves gracefully along the line between her mother's story and her own, and (it appears) honestly grapples with the ups and downs of both. Thank you.

                5 out of 5 stars Accurate, yet sensitive and personal.......1998-07-17

                This book provides an accurate description of the development and chronic course of schizophrenia, one of the most debilitating illnesses of our time. The Holleys' sensitive portrayal of Mrs. Elgin's life touched me deeply. I thank them for giving us and honest depiction of this illness.

                5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone curious about schizophrenia.......1998-02-01

                I fell in love with this book from the first page and couldn't put it down. The author takes you through the beginning of a beautiful singing career of her mother to the painful discovery of a life long mental illness. It truely gave me a new understanding of schizophrenia and the affect it has on family and friends.

                  This is the first available reference to describe and document all known species of quails, partridges, and francolins. A companion volume to The Pheasants of the World, this text covers nearly three times as many species, and includes many more color plates, some of which represent species
                  that have never before been illustrated in color in ornithological literature. The text includes comparative chapters on reproductive biology, ecology, population dynamics, ontogenetic development, and behavior, as well as a review of taxonomy and zoogeographic aspects of the groups.
                  Identification keys to genera and species are provided, and criteria for identifying individual species by age and sex are also included. The book is an invaluable resource for ornithologists, ecologists, and anyone interested in these diverse species of game birds.

                  1 out of 5 stars The worst craft book ever.......2007-05-14

                  This book is heavy on the art history references, and light on actual creative ideas. I guess the idea was to link the projects with well-known artists' styles, but it's overly wordy and these links are loose and uninteresting. The projects were totally lame and, without photos or drawings on most of them, hard to imagine or get interested in. The graphic design is even more banal, in fake typewriter font and two-color printing that's not even utilized well. A better version would have cut the copy by half (or more) and put in photos of the projects (or, come on throw us a bone--even a drawing of each one!) though some were so stupid even that wouldn't save them. Save your money.

                  3 out of 5 stars some of it is a waste of paper........2006-08-24

                  This book is not bad. It has alot of references to many artists over the past few centuries and it was interesting to learn about some of the newer ones. This book also contains alot of clever ideas for inexpensive projects. My only complaints are: there aren't any colour photos, or real pictures of what any of the projects will look like - only drawings. And the way the author writes is extremely informal and the book is just one big joke. Also, the way the author relates certain artists to projects seems forced. It seems like she just looks for ANYTHING that could be sort of related or not at all to try to mention an artist at certain points in the book. It's sort of a waste of writing when she does this.
                  Overall, it's an okay book. It has some good projects and some interesting facts about some artists, which you don't usually find in a DIY book.

                  I think the ideas are great, but I feel like I will go through twice the materials they suggest using because I will mess up the first time due to lack of instruction. This book would be better with photos or at least a sketch of what the project might look like.

                  5 out of 5 stars What A Fun Book.......2006-04-20

                  I REALLY enjoyed this book. In fact, I initially checked it out of the library but liked it so much I bought it. What is surprising is that there are not a lot of pictures OR photos and I STILL liked this book. There are several diagrams so at least you get an idea of what how something is supposed to look. There was another book that had a similar feel, but this book is soooo much better. This is the book that , "Get Crafty: Hip Home Ec (see my review)"was trying to be. I like that the chapters are logical with an interesting layout that is easy to follow.

                  The chapters include Food (my favorite subject), Home Decorating, Wearables, Potions (soaps, bath, cosmetics) and Special Events and Gifts. I think there is probably something in this book that would address anybody's taste. I'm planning on making the Avocado-Mushroom Risotto tonight.

                  In addition to the great layout of the book, each project has an interesting tidbit about an artist, writer, painter or art concept and was quite educational and most interesting. Some of the projects include:

                  * Clocks from old things
                  * Diorama door table
                  * Bread-n-jam mini layer cakes
                  * Coin Necklace
                  * Oatmeal and Almond scrub
                  * Fortune Cookies
                  * New Year's Trash Hat
                  * Hanging Murphy Shelf

                  I give this book a 4.5 star, because it lacks photos and could use more illustrations. If they revise this book, I would recommend taking out some of the tidbits and putting in more pictures to make this a full 5 star book. Even though this book is for the "starving artist", it could easily be used by the starving student, starving college graduate, starving actress OR for someone like me who likes to stoke their creative side and have some fun.

                  3 out of 5 stars great SOUNDING projects, but..........2006-04-14

                  This book coulda' tossed in a few pictures of completed projects. This book didn't have a single photo to inspire or guide. Sometimes you just need to see it done to know it's possible!

                  But - that aside, I like the ideas inside. Gonna pick one out & start soon...

                  Book Description

                  On any list of the world's most pressing problems, water scarcity and water quality inevitably rank high. These issues and their related concerns often emerge in the major topics of the day, including Walkerton, free trade and globalization debates and drought.

                  Despite all the pessimism surrounding the future of the world's drinking water, many predicaments can be remedied with simple conservation methods. Home-based water conservation starts with How to Get Your Lawn Off Grass, the only North America-wide guide on how to convert your yard from a water-sucking source of pollution runoff to a flourishing, productive showcase of natural vegetation. While 1.3 billion people on the planet don't have access to safe drinking water, 60% of ours goes into conventional turf-grass lawns and ornamental, exotic gardens.

                  Runoff from chemical treatment of lawns and gardens has seriously compromised groundwater supplies everywhere in the United States and Canada. We have put garden cosmetics ahead of our health.

                  How to Get Your Lawn Off Grass teaches how to conserve water and prevent the pollution of groundwater. It covers how to cut, roll up and compost turf-grass lawn (and water-sucking, ornamental "exotic" garden plants) and how to replace them with gorgeous native ground covers: flowers, shrubs, trees and grasses that will need no fertilizers, no chemical controls for pests, no mowing and, after the first year, no watering. This is a vital publication for all North Americans who are concerned about water scarcity and water quality.

                  3 out of 5 stars promising title.......2002-12-24

                  Upon seeing the title of this book, I automatically picked it up and bought it. Being a chemical free gardener in the midst of a drought, I ran home elated at my good fortune in finding the very book I was hoping for. I have to say that my heart sank when I realized this was not a book exclusively about lawns(that space in the landscape used for family play,visual respite and contrast, and in design, for "negative space"), and how to manage them through use of different grasses and ground covers, and xeriscaping etc. This book has some good information in it and I would recommend it to the homeowner wanting some good tips for their garden. I myself learned a new thing or maybe two. It is in no way the comprehensive treatise on the subject its enticing title suggests. I would recommend any of the Rodale books out there first, but feel that there can never be too many books dedicated to the promotion of Gardening in an environmentally responsible fashion, And this a fine addition to someone building their collection . Finally it has to be said that the gardens featured in this book are not beautifully designed master pieces, a pity really.

                  5 out of 5 stars Loved it so much I used it twice.......2006-09-25

                  I used these calendars for two different pregnancies and really enjoyed it. The weekly information is interesting and helpful, the stickers are great and the baby name suggestions are wonderful too. They really crammed alot of useful stuff into this calendar, plus really cute pictures of babies. The only drawback is writing in all of the dates and days of the week, but you'll have that flaw with any pregnancy calendar.

                  3 out of 5 stars Nice, but needs improvement.......2006-01-30

                  The calendar does have nice pictures and I like the tips and the names at the bottom. However, even though it is done week by week there is little room to write anything down. They have this huge quote that takes up 1/4 of the page. I think they could of reduced this and made the writing area larger.

                  5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for..........2004-11-29

                  I seemed to have a harder time this pregnancy (my third) finding a "pregnancy calender". I was really excited to find this one. The pictures are very sweet and there was room to write in my thoughts, etc... It's a good buy if your into keepsakes and scrapping.

                  5 out of 5 stars Horray, this is exactly what I wanted!.......2004-07-01

                  I just recieved this Calendar in the mail today and I love it! It has a page for each week with tips for each day of that week. The pictures are adorable too. I love that it has spots for pictures too. It also has suggested baby names A-Z on the bottom of each page. It's definitely worth the money. I just wish I got it sooner!

                  5 out of 5 stars Hooray - Finally a Gift that Mommy can treasure for years!!!.......2002-12-24

                  The "Hooray! My Baby Is on the Way Calendar" was a wonderful way for me as a first time mom to become attuned to what was going on with my baby week by week. The calendar also displays adoreable pictures of babies for you to ahhhh over in anticipation of your new arrival. The stickers (first ultrasound, picked babies name, first heartbeat heard, wore maternity clothes, and etc.) are a nice way to reflect on the memories of pregnancy. The calendar also displays helpful hints that guide you on what can be expected. These hints also can be dropped to signifant others as a suttle way of saying "I need a back rub!" The calendar is a great gift to yourself or to those that are expecting around you!!!

                            Book Description

                            Edward Thomas (1878–1917) was perhaps the most accomplished of the English poets who died in the 1914–18 war. Much of his poetry was written in the three years leading up to his death. He saw himself as an ‘isolated, self-considering brain’, seeking to ‘re-open the connection’ between himself and the world. The Imagination of Edward Thomas shows this reconnection taking place in his poetry and to some extent in his imaginative prose. On the one hand there is the solitary melancholic immured in the prison of his ‘self-consciousness’, whose awareness of lost connections in his personal life extended to a general sense of loss; and on the other, there is the man struggling to escape the limitations of his personality and make connections with the world of others and the natural world from both of which he derives his values. Professor Kirkham has produced a thorough and fascinating study of these contradictions, exploring in detail Thomas’s values, his imaginative world, and his poetic craftsmanship, and relating these to the preoccupations of the troubled era in which he wrote, lived and died.
