Not the best 'First Source' for trip planning.......2007-08-10
I should start by saying that I travel extensively and plan all my own trips. I enjoy the planning process almost as much as the trips themselves (sometimes more so, after a rainy trip to Switzerland when we did NOT see the Alps even once!!!). I've used countless guidebooks and internet sites, and consider myself pretty knowledgeable on travel information sources.
I bought this book as a starting point for planning a trip to Costa Rica and while it contains an incredible amount of information, I felt like it was too encyclopedic to be easily helpful for planning. For example, the first 170 pages deal with history, culture, national holidays, wildlife, etc., etc., etc. While I think all of this info is valuable and interesting, I don't want or need most of it when trying to decide where to travel within the country. This book, while providing a ton of detailed information, seems to assume that the reader has some previous knowledge of the country regarding possible itineraries and what the 'must see' areas are. Its 'Suggested Itineraries' section is one paragraph long and basically says 'do what you want and can afford' - not a big help, in my opinion. I don't always follow suggested itineraries but I find them helpful as a starting point, especially in a country as diverse and filled with so many wonderful possibilities as Costa Rica.
Additionally, I found the format to be kind of like a laundry list - lots of stuff but often no indication of relative merits between lodgings, attractions, etc.
I ended up going to the library and using Frommer's and Fodor's as a start for itinerary ideas and then used "Rum and Reggae's" Costa Rica (Jonathan Runge & Adam Carter) as a good source with a definite 'point of view' and lots of opinions. They make pretty clear WHY they like or dislike something, which helps determine if I'll agree or not.
Having said all of this, now that I've planned my trip (using other sources), I will read this book more closely and I'm sure I will benefit from it. It IS an exhaustive (and perhaps exhausting!) source of, I'm sure, everything you've ever wanted to know about Costa Rica.
Explore Costa Rica.......2007-07-18
There's nothing like looking through travel guides in the depth of a Canadian winter. It makes me feel a little warmer. Almost immediately, I start to dream about the places I'd someday like to visit.
Costa Rica is now definitely near the top of my list of places to go. This area is about the size of West Virginia with mild subtropical weather year round. As one would expect, there are great beaches with lots of interesting water activities such as snorkeling, diving, whitewater rafting, surfing, wind surfing, swimming, canoeing, and boat tours.
In addition to these beaches, the island also boasts four mountain ranges which include active volcanoes. Evidentially, the sand in these areas is black or light grey from the volcanic obsidian and the pumice. There are tours available to visit some of these areas.
Costa Rica actually has 12 different life zones that serve as the homes for all sorts of interesting flora and fauna species, including sea turtles, jaguars, anteaters, sloths, fruit bars, poison dart frogs and manatees (just to name a few). Visitors have their choice of informal visits or more formalized tours. Some places even allow volunteers.
Explore Costa Rica gives all the details a tourist needs to tailor fit their Costa Rican vacation. This book even includes entertainment opportunities that I would have never known existed: hot air ballooning, geological expeditions, tour of a pineapple plantation, and snake milking demonstrations just to name a few. There is also lots of good advice that will save time, money, and a good deal of frustration.
A Quality Guide to a Beautiful Country.......2007-05-03
As co-author of the sixth edition of Lonely Planet Costa Rica, acquaintances often ask me which guidebook I recommend, now that my own is out of date. Explore Costa Rica is the perfect choice for independent-minded travelers interested in learning more about the country from travel writer who has been covering Costa Rica since at least 1992.
A detailed field guide of flora and fauna will help you appreciate Costa Rica's fabulous national parks, while useful advice on "Picking a Tour" is accompanied by listings that include everyone from slick, international package-tour operators to scruffy beachtown-based independent guides. Hotel and restaurant listings span a wide range of prices and expectations, and descriptions tend to be more detailed than in thinner guidebooks - at 621 pages, there's plenty of room. I especially appreciate events listings; you just haven't lived until you've attended a loud, guaro-soaked Costa Rican fiesta, and Pariser makes sure you know what's on while you're in the country.
My only quibble is with the maps - they're accurate and useful for towns and cities, and are more than sufficient for travelers using public transport. If you're planning to drive, however, be sure to ask for a free country map from your rental car company or any tourist office. Regardless, this book gets five stars because it is accurate, updated and insightful.
Harry Pariser's Great Travel Guides!.......2007-05-02
I have been using and reading Harry Pariser's guides for years, through all the editions, and I find them enormously entertaining and helpful. Loved his guide to Puerto Rico, but more importantly: he has a FIFTH edition of the Explore Costa Rica, which I found before my trip. Although Pariser has always included a lot of background information and tips in his travel guides, this one is packed with more. The coverage of lesser known places was great, and the sidebars useful and informative. His images reveal the beauty of Costa Rica. This is a valuable resource for any person going to explore Costa Rica. Take this one with you!
Best Guide to Costa Rica!.......2007-04-30
I truly enjoyed Harry Pariser's 5th edition 'Explore Costa Rica' as it offered many insights on the history of the country, off the beaten trail destinations, travel tips, little known traveler spots, and much more! With very descriptive information and brilliant photos, Costa Rica's myriad of activities seems to come alive. I would strongly recommend this to anyone interested in *experiencing* Costa Rica through the lens of an expert who knows this country like the back of his hand.

The best guide book I've seen.......2005-11-22
This is is the best travel book I have
ever had. It covers everything for a traveler.I
normally don't even bother purchasing a travel guide because all of the Travel/Adventure guides that I have ever seen have had generic information in them. They have had very little useful information in them. I can't say enough about this authors books. I wish there were more authors out there producing work of this caliber. This book is a must have for anyone traveling to Costa Rica.
One in the hand, two in the bush...........2004-06-09
What can I say? I thought this book was above average until I saw one that I liked much better!
I was eating at Croce's Restaurant in Old-Towne San Diego, California, when I saw a book displayed: Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made.
Apparently, singer Jim Croce's widow had spent a couple of years there working and recuperating after her husband's death, and the authors came into her restaurant one day and they ended up trading books with her (she wrote a cookbook, Thyme in a Bottle)!
Well, I looked through The Last Country The Gods Made and ended up buying it on Amazon and it's a FIVE star, compared to Explore Costa Rica. Bottom line, the writing's so much more engaging.
GREAT Information; HORRIBLE Typos.......2004-05-18
I purchased this book recently for my upcoming trip to Costa Rica because I wanted a different point of view outside of Lonely Planet's guidebook (which, I might add, I also purchased). I found the information very helpful in planning my trip, including the little sidenotes on what to watch for and dangers on the road. My biggest mistake, however, was to try and read the book from cover to cover like a novel. There are probably over 250 typos in the first 300 pages alone, ranging from repeated paragraphs to punctuation errors to ommitted words. It can get very frustrating when you are learning about a particular region and the sentence reads, "...most notably, this region includes. Further down the road...". I do not know who to blame, Praiser or Manatee Press for letting a book like this out on the market. The credibility of the author and the publishing company are severely weakened by something like this. Buy this book used and skim it...your frustration level will be dramatically lowered.
Boring & Pedantic.......2002-09-29
If I'd wanted a lecture on an author's opinions of ecology, I'd have been better off buying a textbook. The nuts and bolts of what a guidebook should provide -- descriptions and details of hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions are presented in a shopping list style that is less useful than the yellow pages.
I want my money back!
Great Book - Full of Hidden Gems.......2002-05-15
This is a wonderful introduction to Costa Rica. My girlfriend and I journeyed there and, with the help of this book, had a wonderful time. It has a lot of information on the less-frequented spots of the many beautiful national parks, good maps, and the way it is organized and indexed really makes things easy as you move from town to town (and beach to beach!). Recommended.

put together with care.......2004-02-28
I appreciate guide books that are put together with care, appreciate writing that is fun and interesting and highly informative. "Fodor's Costa Rica 2003" is an inexpensive book and a terrific one!
It was the best book on the country besides the considerably more pricey, "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made," a welcome addition to any library collection that will capture the interest of travelers, amateur geologists, students, and conservationists .

High Hopes: The Clinton Presidency and the Politics of Ambition
ASIN: 1403970483

Book Description
A compelling probe of Bushs psychology, linking the person with the policies, updated after the election From a son who waged a life-long struggle to live up to family expectations, George W. Bush has transformed himself through acts of will and faith. Having won a second term, he has exceeded his fathers achievements and come out from his shadow. Stanley Renshon examines the psychological transformation of Bush and identifies the pivotal changes that allowed him to achieve success in his personal life and in the political arena, and shows how Bushs personal transformation has come to shape his presidency and policies. This insightful look at Bush enhances understanding of his strategies and goals, providing crucial insight into his transformational leadership, his re-election, and his likely legacy.

How Does George W Bush Succeed By A Psychologist.......2005-02-06
This is a pro-administration book. The author's presentation in the book is very sympathetic to the President and his administration. The polls show the public trusts Bush according to the author. The book lays out a very upbeat analysis of the President. The author is a psychologist and the author attempts to psycho-analyze the President from afar. He spoke at an author event in January where the attendees seemed to be underwhelmed. The author added that people have underestimated George Bush for over ten years, in his opinion.
worthless book.......2004-12-01
MR. RENSHON IS A PART OF ADMINISTRATION'S PEROPAGANDA MACHIN . HE EVEN DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THAT THE PLAN FOR OCCUPYING IRAQ WAS DISCUSSED AND PLANED EVEN BEFOR MR. BUSH CAME TO OFFICE.
Total nonsense.......2004-10-06
I have taken a course with Renshon, and read portions of his writings on this subject before the book was published. It's not so much that I'm opposed to his partisan perspective -- he's entitled to that if he wants it.
The real problem is his complete disregard for any standard of social science research methodology. He has given up on trying to explain what happens in reality, and instead focuses on the alleged psychological issues of Bush as they relate to his father (presumably all emanating from some sort of ultimate Oedipal complex).
His research relies almost entirely on media reports and Bob Woodward's 2 journalistic accounts of Bush. Renshon attempts to put Bush on the couch from afar, and utterly fails.
Balanced.......2004-08-24
Reading this book, I didn't start out liking Bush very much, but
afterwards I had learned a lot that was new and sort of interesting about him. After reading this book, you may not end up voting for Bush, but you probably will see that there is a lot more to the man than his critics say. The author has clearly reached some conclusions about the man, but lays out the evidence on both sides of the issues carefully. I thought both sides got a fair hearing and that the author let the reader make his or her own judgments, and that overall the book was surprisingly balanced.
No tiresome spin.......2004-08-24
GWB is a remarkably polarizing president, and the storm of emotion that surrounds him makes getting a handle on the man and his presidency extremely difficult. And yet, the context of war makes understanding what makes him tick particularly urgent. Renshon's book arrives at just the right time. And his careful, thoughtful analysis should be fascinating reading even to political junkies who thing they know this president well.
Renshon explores the story of what it was like to grow up as a Bush, of his struggle to make something of himself, and of his conquest over an addiction to alcohol. Most interesting, however, is Renshon's description of the president as an agent of transformational change dealing with the question of national survival in a deeply divided society. To an unexpected and startling degree, Bush has been willing to risk his political future by going against the grain of much of the public, liberal and conservative alike. There will be lots of books on Bush written by talking heads who mistake political warfare for careful analysis. Renshon's book, however, should stand the test of time as a work of scholarship and integrity.

Book Description
The little-known life of Marty Mann rivals a Masterpiece Theatre drama. She was born into a life of wealth and privilege, sank to the lowest depths of poverty and despair, then rose to inspire thousands of others, especially women, to help themselves. The first woman to achieve long-term sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous, Marty Mann advocated the understanding that alcoholism is an issue of public health, not morality. In their fascinating book, Sally and David Brown shed light on this influential figure in recovery history.
Born in Chicago in 1905, Marty was favored with beauty, brains, charisma, phenomenal energy, and a powerful will. She could also out drink anyone in her group of social elites. When her father became penniless, she was forced into work, landed a lucrative public relations position, and a decade later was destitute because of her drinking. She was committed to a psychiatric center in 1938-a time when the term alcoholism was virtually unknown, the only known treatment was "drying out," and two men were compiling the book Alcoholics Anonymous. Marty read it on the recommendation of psychiatrist Dr. Harry Tiebout: it was her first step toward sobriety and a long, illustrious career as founder of the National Council on Alcoholism, or NCA.
In the early 1950s, journalist Edward R. Murrow selected Marty as one of the 10 greatest living Americans. Marty died of a stroke in 1980, shortly after addressing the AA international convention in New Orleans.
This is a story of one woman's indefatigable effort and indomitable spirit, compellingly told by Sally and David Brown.
Customer Reviews:
Mrs Marty Mann-a wonderful trip into the history of recovery.......2005-01-12
I loved this book. It is well-written, expertly researched and completly honest. As a recovered person myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the the weaving of historical accounts of the early days of AA and NCA. Even without that, the story of Marty Mann was impressive and powerful. The account of the founding, growth, growing pains and success of NCA was a primer on how to get an impossible job done. Many other historical facts that were intertwined throughout the book provided a sense of reality about developments in our country that are rarely discussed.
My thanks to the authors for writing a book I will treasure it and make it a permamnent part of my personal library.
Bravo! I loved this book. The Brown's work is stupendous!.......2003-07-13
This was written with the language of the heart... and was informative, fascinating, and well done in every way. I enjoyed the pictures too. I felt privileged to see inside this fabulous woman's life.
A must read -- a page turner!.......2002-03-26
Riveting and educational! A page turner! Marty Mann was an incredible woman and we finally get to read about her life in detail. This is a must read for those who are recovering from alcoholism, those affected by alcoholism, social service and public health providers and legislatures. We have much to learn from Marty Mann and we must continue her mission today.
An unforgettable biography.......2001-10-12
As its title implies, A Biography Of Mrs. Marty Mann, The First Lady Of Alcoholics Anonymous is the uplifting life story of a singularly strong and incredible woman - one who crusaded to teach all of America, men and women, that alcoholism is a treatable disease. Her life, which spanned most of the 20th century encompasses despair, hope, and redemption through crusading to battle the pernicious evils of alcoholism, and perhaps just as bad, ignorance about the nature of alcoholism. In Marty's own words, "People who dislike the terms 'alcoholic' and 'alcoholism' should consider the alternative of not knowing what was the matter with them and could believe only that they were hopelessly insane." An unforgettable biography of one of America's most fervent public-health reformers.

Great Dog Stories!.......2000-03-26
This book was really enjoyable. I love stories about dogs, and Roger Caras was able to find many new and unique dog stories that I had never read or even heard of, and I have quite a few old out of print books with dog stories. Very enjoyable. Very nice variety. Of course, included a story by "the master" of dog stories- Albert Payson Terhune. If you love dog stories and have never heard of Terhune, you're missing out! Terhune wrote about 100 years ago and most of his books are out of print. However, there are a few of his books, such as Lad, a Dog and Lad of Sunnybank still in print. Lad, A Dog has never been OUT of print. Great book, very enjoyable. Also check out his "sequel"- "The New Roger Caras Treasury of Great Dog Stories" with many new dog stories

Great Quilts.......2007-05-17
This book is great. Karla Alexander has many great patterns in many different books.
Interesting........2007-01-14
The only reason this did not get a 5 is that I am not sure about how to do this, more over I am a traditional quilt lover and I am not very artsy. I know folks that love the stack and wack. Nice book and great colors.
Alaska quilter.......2006-11-12
The instructions are clearly written in this book. What it lacks is any information how to quickly and easily enlarge the quilts. The majority of the quilts are approximately lap or twin size. It would be very helpful to add info for those of us who are mathematically challenged on how to enlarge the quilts either by larger blocks or how to go about creating more blocks with more fabric.
Great Variety for Fast, Contemporary Quilts.......2005-04-26
I like this book SO MUCH more than the original Stack the Deck. The variety in this book is great, and the concept is easy to follow. Plus, the quilts look GREAT. My hand-dyed fabrics really shine in these quilts, and I can showcase special pieces with ease. The Red Onion quilt is my favorite, although I was really attracted to the floral squares one, as well. My only issue with the book is that the borders shown are fairly plain-jane - some different examples would be nice. But hey - if that's the only thing wrong, I can find borders (or create some) for myself!
nice book.......2005-03-27
I just received my copies of this book and the first, Stack the Deck. I like the looks of the ones in this book better. I'm wanting to make at least 3 of the quilts in this book. The only 'problem' I see with the books (so far) is that she shows a small photo of different cutting diagrams with the cutting and piecing orders, but you have to either 'free style' it or draw your own or enlarge these to size (which may take several copies since some are oly about an inch square and the fabric square starts out at 9 3/4 inches!) anyways, I haven't tackled this yet and I'm not sure if I'll just draw my own or what. there are also a few with curves in this book and circles..as well as several 'square inside a square' looking ones as well as a few others. Other than not having the full-size 'templates' I'm very happy with this book (but Iguess the idea is to get away from using templates and be creative!) I originally thought I'd give this a 4 star rating but for the type of book it is I think it fits the bill. It reminds me also of some patterns I have by two kwik kwilters, except with theirs they give you the fullsize pattern and you trace it on freezer paper for each set of blocks..but there are more ideas in this book than these patterns currently offer.

Customer Reviews:
amazing, freeing.......2007-03-14
I used this book in a class. If you are using it on your own, take your time and experiment with a small project. Most Important to keep track of the order of the cut pieces. Number them on paper and keep on the stack.
As you sew them together, do not press them. You must complete a whole block before you press because there are so many pieces on the bias. As you sew, none of the seams will line up and the whole thing looks like a mess. When you finish the block and press it you will be amazed.
It is very freeing, you don't have to control anything, except the order in which the pieces must be sewn. Chose your fabrics carefully. When I was finished making a table runner, there were two of the fabrics I did not like so did not use a couple of blocks. The rest were very interesting as random cuts and looked great.
Nice and easy!.......2005-07-19
The instructions were easy to follow. I was fortunate enough to be taking the class from Karla as I used the book! You can get rid of a lot of scraps using this technique.
d
Learn a super quilting technique.......2005-07-19
This book will inspire you to make quilts - lots of quilts. I've pieced two in just over a week and now I imagine all kinds of possibilities for future quilts.
Karla's technique is just plain fun, easy and creative. And if you ever have the opportunity, take a class from her, her classes are as great as her books.
More of the same.......2005-07-06
I was a little disappointed in this book. Every quilt started looking the same with little useful information.
Very Easy but they look so complicated!.......2004-10-10
My daughter and I are sharing this book, it is wonderful!. The designs are so easy to put together and the finished product is wonderful! I highly recomend this book and her follow up book for quilters who work full time and don't have all the time to quilt that they want.
Book Description
Experienced gardeners often ask: Why plant annuals? They are common and garish and just don’t last.
This anticipated new work by eminent horticulturist Wayne Winterrowd—covering more than 250 genera and 600 species and containing over 250 color photographs—provides a great many answers to that question. Familiar garden plants such as marigolds, sunflowers, and zinnias are lovingly portrayed, as well as new species that the gardener may have only just discovered or never previously encountered. Each species is fully described by appearance, range of color, propagation, culture, climatic preferences, and garden value. In addition, Winterrowd supplies fascinating accounts of the botanical etymology, the origins of common names, and the rich historical lore that surround all plants, familiar and rare alike. Most important, his lifetime of hands-on, practical garden experience crisscrosses these pages, offering a trove of practical advice. The result is a volume that will encourage committed annuals growers in their passion and introduce a whole new world of possibilities to gardeners who have hardly guessed at the riches of these formerly undervalued plants.
A tremendously ambitious work that reflects almost ten years of careful research, observation, and experimentation,
Annuals and Tender Plants for North American Gardens is a comprehensive, utterly engaging reference. Arranged alphabetically and with convenient, at-a-glance profiles prefacing each entry, this beautifully designed guide is both a good read and a visual delight.

Good addition to your garden reference library.......2005-01-24
As with his earlier book, "Annuals for Connoiseurs," this is a great reference book for annuals and tender perennials. It's also a great place for inspiration and ideas -- you'll want to try some new plants, or use an "old" one in a different way.
What makes Winterrowd's work unique are his suggestions on how to get the most enjoyment and beauty from each species. Besides the usual basics, he gives suggestions for each plant on how to grow and use it well (pot, trellis, in shrubbery, etc.), how to start seed, how to overwinter it (if applicable), when to pinch back, which varieties are most floriferous/hardy, etc.
He's also very readable -- engaging, often humorous, a bit like talking to a friend about favorite plants.
My only regret is that there aren't more pictures, particularly of the less well-known species. But, in combination with one of the more traditional plant encyclopedias (for pictures), "Annuals and Tender Plants for North American Gardens" will give you way more ideas than you'll be able to use!

Expert advice from a registered nurse-midwife on caring for baby from birth through the first year of life.
Customer Reviews:
Great for first time parents.......2007-06-21
This book was given to me by an Australian friend. I own a couple of baby books as I am a first time mom without any support group. (just moved abroad before the baby came). My little one is now 10 months old and I have to say this book answered all the little questions I had. It gives many options for different problems, like feeding or sleeping, yet it does not preach or impose anything on you like so many books that make you feel like the worst mom on earth. That common sense approach is what I like about this book. Every mother/child is different and there is no universal solution. If you follow the recommendations in Baby Love you will feel save and provide well for your baby.
The book gives lots of information on different age groups, like newborn, 3-6months, 6-9months and 9-12months. It addresses changes that happen during that time in behavior, motor skills, feeding and sleeping. It reassures you with smaller medical problems and tells you when it's better to call the ped.
Over all I love this book and I will buy the toddler-version too.
Definitely the best baby book.......2007-05-07
I bought this book based on some of Robin Barker's mini-guides sent to me by my sister-in-law in Australia when I had my first child. They were so useful and down to earth that when I had my second child recently, I ordered this book, having ditched all my others in disgust! Apart from the excellent advice, the great thing about her is that she refuses to take a dogmatic stance (neither overly rigid or overly liberal) or judge parents for what they need to do to get by. At the same time, she offers practical advice and options for different approaches to try. She isn't mealy-mouthed and doesn't contradict herself or leave you with the impression you're going to unalterably hurt your child by taking a different path (unlike What to Expect). Having had a baby who cried a lot, she talks to you directly about this and helps you deal with the emotions well. Get this book - throw out the rest!!!
Besy baby book, ever........2007-01-15
New to babies? Afraid of babies? They are more durable than you think. This Aussie author knows of what she speaks. A 'baby nurse' and mother, pragmatic world traveler and military wife, Robyn Barker gives plain spoken advice to parents new, young or old.
Life saver for new mums.......2005-10-05
This book was literally a life saver (mine!) As a new mum, every question or worry I had, but was too embarassed to ask, was answered in Robin's book. The easy index at the back made it such a handy reference. Filled with common sense answers and advice, it helped me be a more confident mum. A must have for new mothers!
It's A "Baby Bible".......2005-05-13
This book contains everything a parent needs to know about what to do with their new baby. Its comprehensive, well-informed advice is delivered in a down-to-earth, no-nonsense way. Unlike so many other authors of parenting guides, Robin Barker talks to parents without patronising, criticising or having unrealistic expectations. This book is a wonderfully factual, practical and sensible counter to the tonnes of unwanted advice and old wives' tales constantly offered to new parents. I recommend it without hesitation.
