Book Description
Wisconsin is a premier backpacking state, with outstanding opportunities for weekend trips. With its Great Lakes and river boundaries, national and state parks and forests, and stunning geological diversity, it offers a variety of experiences for both novice and experienced backpackers. In Backpacking Wisconsin Jack and Liz Hailman, drawing on years of personal experience, provide first-hand information for trails in every corner of the state-from the wooded Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, inhabited by whitetailed deer and black bears, to picturesque Newport State Park in Door County, set upon Silurian-age limestone laid down over 100 million years ago.
For each backpacking site you'll find:
*information on entrance fees and permits, campsites, & contact sources
*directions to the location
*detailed trail maps with keys that pinpoint roads, parking, trail shelters, water supplies, outhouses
*ratings for trails, scenery, quiet, solitude, and interest
*background information on history, geology, and terrain
*trail notes describing trees, shrubs, wildflowers, birds, and animals you may encounter.
Backpacking Wisconsin also provides an overview of the backpacking experience, tips for the beginner and the expert, hints on how to choose equipment (boots, packs, tents, sleeping bags, rain gear, stoves), notes on troublesome plants and animals, a list of state areas that no longer offer backpacking, schedules of fees, a checklist for backpacks, and a list of trail, outdoor, and conservation organizations. For those hesitant to venture deep into wilderness, the Hailmans spotlight "quasi-backpacking" sites. All you have to do is pick a trail!
"A user-friendly guidebook! I felt I was sitting at a kitchen table listening to the authors tell detailed stories of trips they have taken and offering advice on how I could share their experiences."-Greg Marr, editor of Silent Sports

Really good, exactly the info I couldn't find anywhere else........2003-05-06
This is a great book. I am into backpacking but never recieved good info about it in our state (I choose to save it for vacations out west - not anymore). I really like how the authors put the book together with ratings of trails and persoanl experience. Excellenet organization. Unlike the other reviewer I think the personal accounts are much needed as they help describe exactly what it was like when the authors were there. This is exactly what Wisconsin backpackers need. I didn't want to make the mistake of going backpacking in Wisconsin and having it turn into something that was too civilized. This book describes what kinds of things are at the campsites or if campsites exist at all(then one must wilderness camp--my favorite). It acts as a guide as to which places will better suite your particular taste for backpacking so you aren't wasteing your whole summer trying to find good places to go.
I wish I had bought a Falcon Guide.......2002-06-03
I do not like this book at all. Maybe it is because I am used to using Falcon Guides, but when I purchase a hiking or backpacking trail guide I expect good trail narratives, not a description of the author's hiking experience. I don't care what time they got into camp or what they had for dinner. In a backpacking book I expect some description of water availability from streams, lakes, etc. In this book the authors only describe whether or not public water is available at campsites. Since I have not found this book to be of much use in planning a backpacking trip to Wisconsin, I am now purchasing the Hiking Wisconsin Falcon Guide.
Buy this book if your'e planning on backpacking in Wisconsin.......2001-03-09
This is a pretty darn good book. I live in Milwaukee and am pretty familiar with most of the places described. The info is accurate, and there's enough of it. A lot of good maps, too. The authors have divided the state into 5 backpacking regions and in each region they've listed many of the best backpacking parks and trails. It's satisfying to know that the authors have themselves backpacked most of the areas they describe. A lot of good stuff in this book, including general backpacking "how-to" info in the first part, but... There is one piece of advice that I think is poorly thought out. On page 25, their advice is to not bring a cell phone into the woods and that it is of little potential help. They talk of the subject in somewhat unrealistic terms, and only of getting lost in the woods and completely ignore other potential problems such as a medical emergency. As an experienced backpacker, I can tell you as they do... DON'T go into the woods if you aren't prepared for emergency and what to do if you get lost, but, if things do go bad and you have a cell phone with you (especially one of those really small, lightweight ones with a wide coverage area) you could be darn glad you brought it. Keep it turned off, use it only in emergencies and pray that it sends and receives OK from your location. This is the biggest potential problem with cell phones in an emergency, but coverage is getting better and technology is giving us more reliability. Their advice should have been (as it is in many other backpacking articles)...Bring a cell phone (with a fresh battery) if you want to, but understand that it is NOT guaranteed to work, keep it turned off except ONLY for emergencies and it is NO SUBSTITUTE for knowledge and smart preperation. Having said that (it's a small point that I made a big deal of)... DO buy this book if your'e looking at a backpacking trip in this wonderful state.

Book Description
An extraordinary life story in over 350 photographs, most never before published.Ronald Wilson Reagan lived the American Dream-over and over again. During his long, astonishing life, he succeeded at everything he attempted. College football letterman. Heroic lifeguard. Sports announcer. Movie star. Television host. Corporate spokesman. Governor. And finally, the greatest dream of all: President of the United States.Fully two-thirds of the images in this book have never been published before, and they offer us glimpses into the private man as well as the public icon. We see him as a little boy in his mother's Sunday School class, welcoming home GIs with Bette Davis; helping his daughter prepare for a ballet recital; and celebrating the birth of his namesake with second wife Nancy. In a wonderful assortment of unseen images from his presidential library, we see every aspect of the president, from building a snowman with his grandson on the White House lawn to anguishing over the deaths of Marines in Beirut. No matter what one's politics, these images, and James Spada's evocative, balanced text, provide new insights into-and fresh awe at-a man whose life embodies the promise of America.AUTHORBIO: JAMES SPADA is a writer and photographer who has written internationally bestselling biographies of Barbra Streisand, Bette Davis, Peter Lawford, and Princess Grace of Monaco. He has also compiled pictorial biographies of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Redford, and Jane Fonda, among others. He lives in Natick, Massachusetts.
Customer Reviews:
THE BEST REAGAN PHOTO BOOK BY FAR.......2004-06-08
James Spada has done extraordinary photo research for this book, uncovering many photographs among the nearly 300 in the book that will be new to even the most die-hard Reagan followers. The text is elegantly written, lively, and informative. If you want to have one photo album to remember Ronald Reagan by, this one hsould be it!
Heavy on the Style, Skimpy on the Substance.......2001-04-12
This book is the perfect illustration of Ronald Reagan. Give the people lots of pretty pictures to look at and keep them distracted from the deficiency of intelligent thought. Heavy on style yet skimpy on substance. If you want to celebrate the shallowness that was Ronald Reagan, then this is a good book for you.
Like Family Album!.......2001-02-16
I got this book on my birthday, which is on February 7, one day later that of Ronald Reagan himself. I am amazed how James Spada got all those pictures in this one volume book. I am amazed at his comments. You got the feeling that he was next to him. President's assassination attempt and his Golden State retirements pictures are also here. BUT BE ADVISED: Unlike other books, this are BLACK AND WHITE pictures. If you are looking for the color pictures, go and buy 'REMEMBERING REAGAN' and 'UNGUARDED MOMENTS.'You will be able to compensate the color phenomenon. I would like to see another book like this one but only in color pictures. All in all, the book is great and the author should be recognized for his efforts. I hope he will start another project and we shall see the color one. You won't be upset as you will see wonderful pictures of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan.
Absolutely Delightful!.......2001-02-11
What a refreshing look at our country's most admired President. After enduring the past 8 years of efforts by the former administration to demoralize family values, I am rejuvenated to see the wonderful photos and read the narratives. There is once again optimism that the Bush family will be the ones who will bring honor and pride to our White House and First Family. The book is a perfect collection of photos showing the geniuine love and respect for families and marriage, as exists with the Reagans. We have been fortunate enough to see Pres. Reagan during campaigns and in Washington, and want our grandchildren to learn more about this wonderful man. I purchased a copy for our grandson, and after receiving it-looked through it, and quickly ordered another copy for our own home.
Outstanding!!.......2001-02-05
James Spada is brilliant! I have always admired Ronald Reagan, the greatest president of our times! This book offers fantastic pictures, most of which I had never seen before, with many pictures coming fairly recently (within the last few years). I only hope that President Bush will live up to the great conservative standards of former-President Reagan. May God bless Ronald Reagan in the final years of his unbelievably effective life!!

Good Despite All Efforts to the Contrary.......2004-06-08
OK - I'll admit that I bought something from the Time/Life telemarketers. I have since been punished by receiving their relentless phone calls.
My copy of "A Life in Pictures" arrived along with three PBS DVD's, and it was a while before I got around to flipping through its pages.
It wasn't until this week that I got around to reading it. The last picture in the book was quite moving now that Reagan has exited the stage at last.
The photos are all worthwhile - though many of them can be found elsewhere. The young Reagan transitioning to the old Reagan presents a remarkable image.
Still, it must be pointed out that anyone selecting Dan Rather to write an introduction to a book about Reagan must have their motive questioned, at the very least. Having Rather opinine about Reagan is like having Rush Limbaugh write the introduction to a book about Bill Clinton.
Rather tries his hardest to say decent things about Reagan while condemning everything he stood for, and is marginally successful. So are the editors, whose captions to the photos only occassionaly break forth in utter disdain. Again - recognizing Reagan's iconographic standing, they are hesitant to resort to outright calumny. Still, they don't miss a chance to characterize his followers as "rabid," emphasize his emotional distance as a father, or give more than equal time to his detractors.
Finally, there's some typical Time/Life nonsense in the book, such as the "Other Presidents Who Survived Assassination Attempts" and "Other Prominent First Ladies" sections.
Still, one can always ignore the captions and text, and come away with a nice collection of images of the Gipper.
Ronald Reagan: A Life in Pictures.......2001-01-28
What a beautiful book documenting the life of arguably one of the most famous and successful Presidents in our nations history. President Reagan saved our country from socialist and communist forces from within and abroad and helped America become the leader of the free world, a position it still enjoys today, 20 years after his first inauguration. Here's to a Ronald Reagan, a TRUE American hero!

Book Description
This life we're given comes in its own season and then follows its vanishing away. If you're at ease in your season, if you can dwell in its vanishing, joy and sorrow never touch you. This is what the ancients called getting free. --Chuang Tzu
"Aidan's crisis had liberated me in a way. We had come close to death, had looked over the edge of the precipice, and then moved back. He would die at some point, perhaps young, maybe very young. He was profoundly disabled, even more so than he had been before. But his near-death had altered my vision. The length of his life or the physical particulars of his life were not as important as the mere fact of his life itself. He was following along in his own season, moving on the currents of the Way....
I could feel myself starting to get free." --from Aidan's Way
Sam Crane was unprepared to be the father of Aidan, a boy who would never walk, talk or see. Aidan's Way is an endlessly inspiring account of parental love and devotion, of the lessons of ancient eastern philosophy and of what it means, ultimately, to be human.
"Aidan's Way is the rare personal account that should resonate with any reader....By telling his story simply, beautifully and bravely, Crane challenges us to question the criteria by which we judge everything in this world."-Chicago Tribune
"One of the rare stories about family tragedy: both remarkably perceptive and lacking in self-pity."-Kirkus Reviews

A moving book about the power of one child's life.......2005-10-18
This book is not your typical book about a life of a disabled child. There are no miracle breakthroughs for Aidan, not moments of sudden amazing feats, nothing like that. Aidan is profoundly disabled, and that is not really the reason for writing this book. Instead, we are shown how his life, however it might seem to others, has affected his father, his classmates and the community, through his simply being. The author often quotes ancient Chinese writings, which I thought would not really be something I'd want to read, but instead, I found much in them to speak to me. My children attend an inclusion school. There are children in their classes with severe disabilities, and I can say wholeheartedly those children give my children much more than my children give them. This book is also about the power of thinking locally. Aidan brought his father more into his local community, and helped him bring about change for all children. A beautifully written book.
Inspiring and highly recommended.......2002-10-29
Every now and then a book comes along that wakes us out of our drab routine lives and makes us reevaluate essential questions: what is important? Am I doing something worthwhile with my life? What is life's meaning? Trite as it may sound, "Aidan's Way" does just that, but in a way that is subtle and avoids self-indulgent breast-beating. At its core, "Aidan's Way" is a resounding affirmation of life. Sam and Maureen Crane are the parents of Aidan, who is profoundly retarded mentally--he cannot walk, talk or see. At every turn, they face the possibility that he may die. Pneumonia assaults his lungs and grand mal seizures force him to rely on a feeding tube for sustenance. Adversaries come in human guise as well, with the Cranes heroically combating outrageous abuses by their HMO, doctors stereotyping Aidan as "one of THOSE kids," and a heartbreaking moment of frustration when an indecisive nurse fails to administer a drug in time to stop Aidan's seizures from permanently damaging his already fragile brain. There are heroes, too--a doctor with cerebral palsy who doggedly probes the causes of Aidan's condition while others write him off, a younger sister who brings hope and joy to the family, and countless therapists, journalists, and teachers. Aidan touches hundreds of people. There is even an amusing vignette about Aidan's role in a row involving his father and, of all people, the Singaporean Prime Minister.
Crane's prose is saturated with vivid imagery and he effectively conveys both the heart-rending pain and sheer joy that is Aidan's way. Drawing upon ancient Chinese texts, particularly the Tao Te Ching and the writings of Chuang Tzu, Crane explores the lessons that Aidan offers to all who come in contact with him. We, the readers, follow Crane's journey as he struggles with ideas of science, human worth and purpose, and the dichotomy of active, rational analysis and intervention, and passive being.
All in all, an inspiring book by a talented writer who has obviously poured into his words not only his heart, but also that of his son's.

Simply the BEST book about Guineas.......2007-08-23
At first I was reluctent to purchase a "how to" book on raising anything. But after purchasing and reading Gardening with Guineas, I was very pleased with my puchase! Ms. Ferguson writes very practical and easy to read advice on how to raise Guinea Fowl step by step as well as other helpful advice for first time guinea owners. I loved the book and recomend it to anyone who has or wants to own guineas.
one of the best books on guineas.......2007-08-05
I;ve looked all over for a book like this, it answers so many questions that even the loco growers can't answer, if i would have read it before starting to raise guineas i wouldn't have lost so many
thanks to the authur she is very informative

All you ever need to know about raising Guineas.......2007-07-13
This book is very informative, and a pleasure to read. We just bought a farm, and there are a lot of woods - and tons of ticks - I did a google search and found that Guinea Fowl are good for getting rid of ticks - then I came to Amazon and found this book. There are great stories, great info, and I am now incubating a couple of dozen guinea eggs and looking forward to fewer bugs in my garden because I'll be gardening with Guineas!
my handbook.......2007-06-08
When my husband told me he had ordered 20 guinea chicks, I had a moment of panic. After reading this book, which gives detailed instructions for different stages of raising guinea fowl, I feel securely armed with many chapters of the author's experience. Our keets are a week old now, and doing fine!
Disappointing.......2007-06-06
I purchased this book with great expectations based upon the glowing reviews of others. Though a decent source of information about raising guineas, the book often left me frustrated and confused. For example, contrary to Ms. Ferguson's experience, neither I nor anyone I've talked to has had any success moving guinea nests. Also, when discussing raising young keets, the author states, "it would be a good idea to provide an optional heat source for the keets in the henhouse on really cold days or nights until they are older." What is "really cold" and what is "older"? On numerous occasions I've searched this book for help with specific problems and gotten only vague information that left the question unanswered.
My experience has taught me, 1. Guineas can be raised exactly like chickens and 2. Don't try to move a guinea nest. Just invert a cage on top of the setting hen, give her food and water, and let her hatch and raise her brood right there.

Chant de Coeur.......2003-03-15
Back when I had my pet pig, Charlotte, I read through this book cover to cover, and found it immensely helpful. Van Loon doesn't treat pigs as merely something you raise for meat, although he covers the aspects of commercial use. He looks at them as social special animals in their own right. He discusses the wild pigs, the history of the pig, their behavior, and how to raise them with care. There are great pictures of Chinese Pigs and innovative ways to feed and house them. The one drawback is his regrettable refusal to believe in the high intelligence of pigs. We raise them for food, but they are the most intelligent domesticated animals, and generally considered the 3rd most intelligent group of animals (after Primata and Cetacea). But what other book is out there that teaches the language of pigs and the words they use, including how to accurately use the pig mating call, which sounds like the French "Song of Love"- "chant de coeur"? This is a book to make one fall in love with the pig, expressing to them, as I often did to Charlotte, "Chant de coeur".
A must for pig ownership........2002-03-05
Today most children and some adults believe pork comes from the grocery store. Van Loon starts with the history of swine to give the reader an understanding of the animal from the ground up. I wasn't sure if I could or wanted to raise pigs, so I bought the book. By the time I finished it I couldn't wait to go get some. Nutrition is so important to raising your own meat, and Van Loon spends a lot of time describing what the impact of certain foods are on the end-product. This helped me make the descisions on what our own pigs would eat. When we took our first pig to the processing plant, they were very impressed by the quality of the meat and we were impressed by the flavor. When we took the second one, it somehow,(150 lbs of pork),was 'mis-placed'- I never got it, hmmm....I think the book was mostly to blame.
Very helpful and informative book. Taught us some pointers........1999-11-09
This book has a lot of helpful information and illustrations. We had our first litter with the help of this book! I'm sure glad I had it to reference when I needed it. A great investment for anyone starting to raise pigs.

Live Healthier and Longer with your own Garden.......2006-04-03
This extraordinary book is the best I have ever seen on home gardens. Its authors grew all their own vegetables and meat from a tiny California plot. Application of the sound ecological principles in this book could increase the carrying capacity of the Earth by many times, and we would not have to worry about overpopulation for a while.
Even Health Food stores may add irritating chemicals to Organically Grown food, as I learned from an extremely chemically-sensitive friend who could not eat such produce. Also, food loses nutrients between farm and store, no matter how it is grown. So you simply cannot buy as high-quality food in any store at any price as you can grow yourself.
The authors had great success getting their city of Berkeley to adopt ecologically sound pest control. This is one of the most essential chapers in the book.
3 R's and an S of Pest Control
R-Residues. Most of us worry about this one.
R-Resurgence. Pesticides build up to higher levels in predators than prey, leading to the pest Resurgence to higher levels than before. This R is of concern with "Organic" methods like onion spray and not only from artificial poisons.
S-Secondary pests. Pests that had been present in very minor numbers may explode to major problems with the removal of predators.
R-Resistance. Most of us understand that pests' high reproductive rates mean that pests resistant to chemical controls soon become the entire population.
These ecological understandings are essential to anyone who wishes to make a truly positive contribution to the well-being of the natural world and to the human ecosystems that depend on it.

Highly Recommended.......2007-04-06
Excellent long-lasting bound Book. Excellent colored photos throughtout!
Highly Recommend for Candle Maker Beginners!
Would have to be "Advanced" Candle Maker to need any other Book!
Very Helpful.......2007-04-01
This is a great book for people who are just starting making candles or has never done it before. The pictures are big and all color and the directions are clear. It also has a list of supplies that you'll need to get started for basic candles with easy to do projects.
Beginning Candlemaker.......2006-11-07
If you have made candles before, this book isn't for you. It is however the perfect book for me. I am new to candlemaking and have read all the candle books in the library and bought several more. But when I make candles, I find myself jumping from book to book trying to get all the steps straight.
This book is an extremely detailed explanation (with pictures) of the steps to making several types of candles; container, molded, dipped, and rolled beeswax. It is like having an expert standing beside you, "This is the way you prime wicks. This is how to add color to the wax".
Includes information on equipment, a good explanation of the different kinds of wicks and then step-by-step instructions with lots of pictures and a checklist of materials needed.
Once I get the hang of candle-making, this book will probably be put back on the shelf in favor of more advanced techniques. But until then, this is the next best thing to having an expert walk you through each step.
pictures!.......2005-09-01
This book is very descriptive. It shows step by step photos that get rid of any confusion that is prevalent in most how-to books.
GREAT FOR BEGINNERS!!!.......2004-01-07
I had never made candles before buying this book. This book gives GREAT advice on everything from designs to supplies. The projects shown in the book are wonderfully described, and the pictures are so good you could use them alone if you wanted! The author does a great job of explaining the little things that I never would have thought of on my own. This is a must have for anyone who is new to candlemaking!
Book Description

White reveals judges, attorneys and court experts for their bias and incompetence. The author takes you through the step-by-step formula for winning with evidence.
Customer Reviews:
Informative .......2007-10-04
This book is informative, as most other reviewers point out. I only caution that he does not show any understanding of a mother's perspective, in fact in some cases he comes across as a misogynist. I only point this out because men need to be able to understand their children's mothers in order to be able to work things out amiably as co-parents, a job which does not go away after court is no longer in session. The author does a really poor job of building up the good in 'most' mothers, and all too often portrays the negative, creating an antagonistic attitude towards all mothers, not just the bad ones. He even uses words like, 'evil', etc.
By all means get the book, it has lots of info, just try to keep an open and compassionate mind. Don't become the monster, even if your ex has.
Great Book!.......2007-04-02
Child Custody A to Z was not only very informative- it was very comforting for me to get the information needed while fighting the fight of my life! I loved learning about how to win- but I also found it equally important to learn about what I was doing that wasn't acceptable and not going in my favor. Even if I wasn't fighting for custody- this book is excellent for any divorce couple with children. Guy White has a lot of experience and knowledge that makes total sense and many valid points.
EXCELLENT! .......2007-03-07
This book is my life, in a nut shell. I finally found someone (Guy White) who will tell you like it is. No candy coating. I have told everyone I know (with children & in the same situation) about this book. I love the "take no prisoners" out look. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
When you can Keep it Simple.......2006-09-07

Expertly written. This is a very informative, play by play book. It outlines the real rules of the "Game". It provides detailed information for family members needing to understand the facts of how a custody case is decided, the players involved and who has the most impact on the case.
Guy White identifies how you should act, think, protect and live your child custody case. Clearly his 20 years experience has positively impacted the live of parents, children and grand parents which were on his side of the case!
Book Description
As a boy in Russia, Nicholas Roerich was captivated by a traveler's stories about Rigden Djapo, ruler of the mystical Himalayan kingdom of Shamballa. These ancient legends told of a time of trouble to come, when Rigden Djapo would assemble his warriors of light and fight a victorious battle over all darkness. Then an era of peace would begin.
When Nicholas grew up, he fulfilled his dream of exploring Asia and becoming a warrior of light. In the 1920s, he led a five-year trek through Central Asia over many of the world's most dangerous mountain passes. While on the journey, he worked on several hundred paintings despite overwhelming obstacles. During his lifetime, he completed about seven thousand works of art.
Not only was Nicholas Roerich a courageous explorer and a talented artist, but he was also a world leader in many professions. He was a scientist, he wrote 30 books and he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to preserve cultural institutions and landmarks during wartime. Twenty-one nations signed a treaty pledging to protect museums, universities, cathedrals and libraries that flew the Banner of Peace that Nicholas had designed.
Warrior of Light tells the fascinating story of the remarkable boy who grew up to be a world-famous artist, explorer, author, scientist, philosopher and peacemaker.

tis a great and a solemn thing for Father to bury any son.......2007-02-02
but especially for this loving and Irish dad, the great Irish exile playwright and autobiographier Sean O'Casey, and for Niall's mother, Eileen, who herself writes so beautifully and comprehensively the introductory biography (which I for one wish was not entirely italicized).
Touching and telling family photographs accompany the main text, which is the transcription of Sean O'Casey's own private journals pouring out his private grief for his son. Through his generously revealing and skillful writings we better understand the heart of every father mourning the loss of a son, whether suddenly to leukemia as here, or to other cruel and permanent separations such as irretrievable divorce. Through reading however guiltily Sean's private grief, we learn we are not so alone in this world, but come to understand and handle our own untouchable grieving.
This slim yet substantial volume is highly recommended for all who grieve in coming to cope and to closure with their grief, realizing there is really after all never any closure, but only a slim hope for compassion and companionship and accompaniement on this bitter road we each must one day walk, better together than apart swallowing alone the bitter tears. Read Niall: A Lament, and with Sean learn to grieve the ungrievable, the unthinkable, the unbearable loss of a Beloved Son.
