      Book Description

Sir Samuel Baker writes in his introduction, "This being a concise summary of the Nile system, I shall describe twelve months' exploration, during which I examined every individual river that is tributary to the Nile from Abyssinia." But how can you resist a book that includes such chapter sub-headings as "Save me from my Friends" or "Pest Spots of the World"? Baker learned Arabic, took his wife with him and set off into the unknown. Opinionated, witty, and a great hunter; in short the very model of a proper British Explorer of the 19th century.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest adventures of all time.......2006-08-31

I like to read about exploring and hunting in Africa, authors like Ruark, Capstick, & Hemingway. The reason I hunted down this book is because Hemingway said it was the best book he ever read about Africa. I figured he would know.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Baker describes his explorations, hunting expeditions, and encounters with the natives in experiences that now can only be dreamed about. He talks about his extensive hunting trips with the Hamram Arabs, who hunted elephants with swords from horseback. He tells about traveling hundreds of miles on the backs of camels, and about rescuing one pack camel that had fallen off the side of a cliff by wrapping ropes around it and lowering it to the bottom of the canyon. Even much of the day to day camp life is very interesting, as the party had to provide for all of their needs for themselves.

It is worth noting, that apparently modern readers must be somewhat put off by a supposed tone of superiority. One reviewer indicates this way, and in the version I have, the publisher actually attempts a vague apology on the back of the book. I didn't notice anything in Sir Samuel Baker's tone, but if someone can read this book and not conclude from the narrative that Baker actually is superior to the vast majority of mortals, they must have a better imagination than I do.

One of the most interesting aspects of Baker's explorations is that he had his wife, Lady Florence, with him the entire time. One of my favorite stories is about a night when he was awakened by a gentle tug on his sleeve, which was always his wife's signal that something was wrong. Without rolling over he reached under his cot and got his rifle first, and then his wife indicated that a hyena had just stuck it's head in the door of the tent. He waited a few minutes, and when the hyena took another look, he dispatched it there in the tent in the middle of the night.

If you like to read about Africa, or about exploration, hunting, or high adventure, I think you will enjoy this book very much.

4 out of 5 stars Samuel Baker - some character.......2002-01-07

This book makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in 19th century Africa. Above all, it gives a clear insight into how Africa and, in particular, the Nile was viewed by European adventurers and hunters at the time. Samuel Baker was a very able writer and his fluid style and keen eye for scientific detail make this book a pleasure to read. Perhaps the only negative aspect of the book is that it goes into too much detail on Baker's hunting expeditions and the modern reader may find some of these episodes quite savage and cruel. Apart from that, it is a book which is well worth reading and which gives the reader a much better understanding of how life really was in these remote areas in the late 19th century.

4 out of 5 stars Early African Adventure as Only a Brit Could Tell It.......2001-09-27

You've got to like the sometimes tedious, journal-style approach of early explorers, or at least be willing to put up with it, to appreciate this book. However, it holds some remarkable writing, insight and yes adventure. Baker was a contemporary of Richard Burton, John Henning Speke, Henry Morton Stanley and David Livingstone, all famous for their searches for the source of the Nile River in Africa. If you know anything about this time in history and about Africa itself, then you know that Africa was almost always fatal. Few who went into the interior returned, and those who did usually paid with their health. Not a pretty picture. Into this scene walks Samuel Baker, a wealthy, larger than life British aristocrat with a passion for exploration and excitement.

Baker was a man who tackled rather than simply lived life. A fine linguist, writer, artist and sportsman who hunted with a knife because it was too easy to kill with a gun, he was also extremely practical with a "let's get on with it" attitude towards his travels. Nothing but determined, he presses forward when others would have said, "enough." Are you surprised that he succeeds where others have failed? I wasn't.

What I like about Baker's writing is that he knows how to tell a story. He is as interested in the people as he is in the facts of what happened. It also helps that Baker himself edited this book, picking and choosing the entries from his longer journal. If Baker is pompous and full of his own superiority at times, he can be forgiven. All in all this is a good read. It helps, however to have read his first book "The Albert N'yanza Great Basic of the Nile" first.

When Franklin D. Roosevelt died, the task of bringing about a swift end to World War II fell to Harry Truman. In Mr. Truman's War, J. Robert Moskin sets out to "pull together the varied, conflicting strands that made (the last five months of World War II) one of the crucial and exciting moments in the world's history." Moskin, who is also the author of The U.S. Marine Corps Story, points out that while much of the architecture of the postwar world had already been decided before Roosevelt's death, Truman was faced with a host of difficult decisions, including when and how to deploy the atomic bomb. Mr. Truman's War is a detailed and readable recounting of the closing chapter of World War II.

          Book Description

This is the first paperback edition of a book the New York Times called "a pitch-perfect rendering" of a critical period in American and world history. Robert Moskin's engaging and readable volume chronicles the first five months of Harry Truman's presidency, encompassing not only the destruction and defeat of the Axis Powers in Germany and Japan, but also the dropping of the first atomic bombs, the birth of the United Nations, the death of colonialism, and the beginning of the Cold War.

From the summons to FDR's deathbed early on the morning of April 2, 1945, through the Japanese surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri, Moskin tracks this unexpected president through some of the most uncertain and trying times in our nation's life. A former Missouri farmer and county commissioner known by his trademark bow tie and steel-rimmed glasses, Truman had little experience in international affairs, having become vice president via a purely political compromise only five months earlier.

Despite his inexperience, he did not hesitate before enormous challenges that loomed over his first administration. He ordered the dropping of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs, refused Churchill's repeated request that he leave American troops in the Russian occupation zone of Germany, cut off supplies to de Gaulle's French army, and insisted that Japan surrender "unconditionally." And at the famous meeting with Stalin and Churchill at Potsdam, he more than held his own.

By the end of those first five months, Truman had transformed himself into a confident leader with a tenacious and unflinching commitment to American ideals in the face of new global challenges.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thoroughly researched, chronological read.......2004-02-28

I found this book compelling and insightful. It is loaded with more than just the facts. It includes a very basic analysis from an historians perspective on the people and events, both big and small, which shaped the end of the war and the post-war world. President Truman was keenly aware of the many influences on such monumental events as the Potsdam Conference, the diplomacy required to confront the problems of a devastated Europe, the competing views among his cabinet members, the French priority for dominating Indochina, and the multi-faceted dilemma posed by new discoveries in atomic power. Moskin is able to deftly capture the complexities of so many intersecting landmarks of history and tell the story in a way that brings the reader along through the uncertainties of the end of WWII.

            Book Description

Meet tall, beautiful Jami Goldman: world-class athlete, Adidas spokes-person, motivational speaker -- and double amputee. More than a decade ago, a wrong turn on a back road during a blizzard resulted in a terrifying fight for her life. Now for the first time, Jami recounts her gripping story of being trapped in the snow for eleven endless days, the grievous loss of her legs, and the fortitude it has taken to not only walk again but run like the wind -- all the way to freedom.

On December 23, 1987, nineteen-year-old Jami Goldman and her friend Lisa Barzano headed home from a ski trip in Purgatory, Colorado, never imagining they would end up in a freezing hell on a back road that the state of Arizona had closed without checking for travelers in distress. The girls' car battery died during that first long night, stranding them in below-zero temperatures. With only a cinnamon roll and a six-pack of frozen Diet Pepsi, the next ten days became an exercise in survival, testing their faith and courage even after they were rescued -- when Jami's legs and feet were deemed beyond saving.

Wise, forthright, and astonishing, Up and Running follows Jami's global journey from loss to recovery. Her story, which often reads like a compelling mystery, features her supportive family and friends, a devastating court case, her passionate relationship with the man she married, and finally, her triumph over inconceivably fearful obstacles. In the end, Up and Running shows us all how to use adversity as a stepping-stone -- leading us to heights we previously considered out of reach and beyond our wildest dreams.

            5 out of 5 stars I knew she could.......2003-10-20

THis is a wonderful book. I knew Jami back in high school. We went to peer counseling camp together. She was just as she says, not very active. I am sure that today she is the same great spririted person I knew back when. She has survived and overcome.I read the book after seeing her on To Tell the Truth. I am proud to say that I know her. I truly recommend this book. It is quite a story of determination.

            5 out of 5 stars a beautiful gift.......2001-12-13

I was so shocked to know how she got both legs amputated. And I was so shocked to know that could happen to anybody. But her extraordinary strength of will to live gave me great courage to confront with my losses or unfortunates. While sensitively expressing a feminine part of her, she was also very competitive and eager to find her new life. Her optimism reminded me how profound our lives and possibilities are. This book will be a beautiful gift to share with all my precious friends. Thank you, Jami and Andrea.

5 out of 5 stars Up and Running: The Jami Goldman Story.......2001-12-13

Incredible personal narrative about what it's like to be average turned to handicapped turned to awesome source of power! I picked this book up in the library, reading back cover and was intrigued before looking at the picture on front cover and wondering, how? My brother is an amputee and I've witnessed first hand the strange way that people treat him, as an outsider from normal existance. Jami describes herself and the way others perceive her very clearly. This book is impossible to put down as you read about the terror of being stuck in a vehicle for 11 days and wondering why you haven't died yet. It is equally as difficult to put down as you read about Jami's determination to return to life as it was before the accident. This book is passionate, informed, relevant to today, romantic, inspirational, realistic, descriptive, adventurous, and well thought out. However, as a 7 months pregnant about to be first time mother, I do not recommend this book for readers under 18 years old.

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Inspirational.......2001-12-07

As a single leg amputee I found it very easy to relate with a lot of the different trials and tribulations that Jami discussed in her inspirational story.I found on somedays not being able to put the book down just to see how she made it to the next step of her incredible journeys of adapting to her whole new world. It's also nice to know that no matter of ones differences from others, you are never alone.

5 out of 5 stars Up and Running: The Jami Goldman Story.......2001-08-27

This is the most amazing and inspirational story I have ever read.I read the book cover to cover. I couldn't put it down. I learned so much about living life to the fullest it made me excited about living again. I want to thank Jami for sharing her amazing journey with the world. I hope everyone gets the chance to read this wonderful book!

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good info, just not quite enough.......2002-02-06

As another reviewer has pointed out, this book really looks like a humor book at first glance, and I picked it up thinking that was the case. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's actually informative as well as entertaining.

The whimsically illustrated book discusses a brief history of cats and goes a bit into why commercially prepared cat foods are not a healthy staple for your cat. There is some information, for the most part based on observation, about how to tell if your cat is too fat. The correct ratios of protein to fat to carbohydrates are discussed, as well as some actual recipes to cook for your cat.

This book really convinced me that feeding dry kibble just doesn't cut it and may explain why my cat has always been overly plump and yet still (always!) clamoring for MORE FOOD. The only drawback is that it just didn't give me all the information I needed to make the switch. Aside from some recipes for vitamin and mineral supplements, there were no specific mixes for basic foods. While the recipes are cute and, I'm sure, tasty for cats, they seem too labor-intensive to prepare day after day. I would have liked to see a few basic recipes that would make a larger quantity which could be frozen in meal-size portions and used for daily meals.

Overall, I think the book was a good purchase, but it left me starving for more.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the pictures alone.......2001-09-09

I am a cat lover (currently between cats) and, while I intend to try the interesting recipes and naturopathic advice with my next cat, I have to admit to buying the book purely because I'm a fan of the illustrator. Readers of Graham Oakley's "Church Mice" series will recognise Sampson the ginger tomcat on the cover and endpapers - which show a before and after picture of him having a very good dinner. Almost every spread in the book features an apt (and usually funny) colour illustration of cat behaviour, and he captures cat expressions/body language beautifully.

            4 out of 5 stars Yes, I'm Afraid My Cat's Too Fat.......2000-06-07

Is your cat too fat? is a straightforward diet and fitness book for cats, dispite its cover illustration, which might lead would-be readers to conclude that it is a humor book.

It begins by telling us some interesting cat history. For example, did you know that cats were persecuted during the Middle Ages? Next, the author explains what it is that cats really like to eat -- NOT BIRDS! Bird are way down on the cat's list of favorite things because the feathers must be plucked before eating. Yuck. Cats like mice of course, but according to a study the author cited, cats prefer canned or prepared food, if it's available. Also, cats can tell when food is beginning "to turn." They prefer it fresh.

The book contains ways to figure out if your cat is too fat, including a weight chart for different breeds. (Mine weighs 12 lbs which is okay for an American short-hair, but she feels fat to me.)

Then comes the part we all know will follow -- the inevitable diet suggestions which we've all heard before. Ta Da: diet and exercise. The author has included lots of clever ways to engage our cats in playful games designed to trim them down a little. And the exciting thing is that we ourselves must become the primary entertainer.

But the most interesting part of the book is the recipe section. Yes, indeed. How about whipping up a batch of chicken liver mousse for your kitten? Or scrambled eggs with haddock for a Sunday morning brunch (for the cat, of course). The recipe section is divided into categories: Sauces, Savories, Sandwiches, Eggs, Game, Meat, Poultry, Fish, and Pasta. (What, no dessert?)

The illustrations are charming, it's easy to read, and full of interesting facts, with a small dose of guilt designed to help us keep our cats healthy and happy. This book belongs on the bookshelf of every cat-lover.

5 out of 5 stars The best scrapbook book for beginners.......2007-04-24

This was the first scrapbook book I ever bought (after checking about twenty books in the local book store) and it is still the best source book for beginner's I've seen. It introduces all the tools and basic techniques and also has some great layouts. If you're an experienced scrapper this is not a book for you but if you're only starting get this book. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Best on the Market.......2006-08-01

This is far and above the best book I've encountered for New Scrappers. Instead of just showing layouts, explanations are there to show why a layout works, how to do it and simplifies the mystique behind all the necessary tools and not so necessary tools. I wish I had bought this book before spending money on stuff I didn't really need. You won't regret this purchase if you are a beginner and it also makes a great gift for someone thinking about scrapping. Guaranteed to rev your creativity.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for the beginner.......2006-03-10

If you are new or fairly new to scrapbooking, this book will help you with organization, picture taking, details about products you will need and conservation and storage. The book also includes stencils and templates which can be removed and used on photos and cardstock. The spiral binding is an added plus because the book lays flat when open. Well worth the purchase price.

                  5 out of 5 stars Scrapbook Teacher.......2004-09-21

This is a great book encompassing every aspect of scrapbooking for the beginner and experienced crafter. It's easy to read and understand, offering a great deal of layouts. I couldn't put it down. This book will definitely take the fear out of beginning scrapbookers and challenge others to try new techniques.

It was nice to finally find a book that would help me with all the questions that I had about my second pregnancy. The book was in excellent condition & arrived right on time!

1 out of 5 stars A very negative book all together.......2006-04-27

Not only is this negative about being a parent for the second time it's very anti-breastfeeding and anti-natural birth. I basically says that pregnant nursing and tandem nursing is a bad idea. At one point 4 of the 5 nursing "personal accounts" are very negative. In the breastfeeding vs. formula section she completely fails to mention that breastmilk is full of nutrients that cannot be duplicated by formula. I'm not a breastfeeding fanatic but the book was in no way even handed with the way that it was treated.

The entire book is very passive aggressive and at one point made me feel like I was being a bad mom, until I snapped out of it. This is what she says about choosing a nurse-midwife. "If you think not using all the technology available would represent poor care of your unborn child, then choosing a midwife is probably not advised." pg. 25

I will be returning it for something a little more fairly presented.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2005-01-14

Most of the information in this book is common sense. Saying that all pregnancies are different and that juggling two (or more) kids is a challenge isn't exactly earth shattering news. Very few of the subjects in this book are really explored in depth. I agree with the reviewer who said this book is like something you'd expect from a magazine. It hits on several good topics but doesn't really say a lot about any of them. I got more out of re-reading the books I had with my first pregnancy. This book felt like a waste of time. I don't really think it's worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Good and just about only book on second pregnancies........2004-09-19

I thought this book was reassuring and informative. It's been 5 years since my last pregnancy, so I wanted a "refresher" book and a book that commented on second pregnancies and how the first child feels. I thought there was some good information about preparing your first child. The section on working moms was nice too.

I disagree with some of the other reviews that say the author is pessimistic about raising 2 kids. I did not get that feeling from her. Yes there were comments in the book that things will get more complicated, but that is, of course, TRUE. I thought the author had good information about juggling the pregnancy and the newborn period, while also having a toddler/school age child on your hands.

Let's face it, most of these books all have information in them that are common sense and that most of us know anyway. The nice thing about the book, is that it is reassuring to just hear another person talk about the things that you're thinking of, questioning, and worrying about.

                    I recommend this book.

                    1 out of 5 stars don't buy it.......2002-11-12

I was not happy with this book. I did not think this book gave a very positive view of parenting two children. It seemed to be very pessimistic - instead of giving helpful hints on how to juggle everything, it talked about how difficult it was. The comments from various people all seemed to be complaints, not tips or hints to help othersin the same situation. I will be exchanging this book for one of the other ones - it was depressing!

                      Book Description

A new analysis of the controversial painter's art as viewed through his life and a biography of his life as viewed through his art.

Among the many books written on or by Salvador Dalí, this is the first to give a complete, well-documented picture of his life and art. Carlos Rojas's approach to Dalí is somewhere between biography, Freudian analysis, and art and literary interpretation. Dalí is haunted from earliest childhood by the specter of his elder brother who died as a toddler shortly before Dalí was conceived (both brothers and the father bore the same name), as he is haunted by the devouring phantom of his mother, that praying mantis on whose portrait he would like to spit. Dalí is seen as endlessly struggling to affirm his identity and existence. A combination of genius, madman, neurotic, and spoiled brat, Dalí is illuminated by his work, while the known facts of his life, his own writings, those of his sister, and of others, are used to analyze the paintings, which are described in considerable detail. Rojas also provides sustained analyses of Dali's relationships, including his influential amorous and intellectual affair with Federico García Lorca.
