It's hard to say who comes off worse here: President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), depicted as arrogant, egotistical, and so poor at negotiation or compromise it's a wonder he ever got involved in politics; or his second wife, Edith Bolling Galt Wilson (1872-1961), portrayed as deceptive, unreflective, and encouraging of the president's worst qualities to an extent that had grave consequences for America and the world. Journalist Phyllis Lee Levin, author of a previous biography of Abigail Adams, scathingly assesses the Wilson marriage, which took place in 1915 only 16 months after the death of his beloved first wife. It was, she argues persuasively, the fatal union of a narcissistic, self-righteous man with an uncritically admiring woman who isolated her husband from other people even before his disabling stroke on October 2, 1919. At that critical juncture, with a host of serious international issues resulting from World War I facing the nation, Edith Wilson conspired with the president's doctor to cover up the gravity of his condition and forestall any talk of the vice president assuming command. (Levin's account of Wilson's impaired physical and mental state leaves little doubt that this would have been constitutionally justified.) She kept cabinet members away from him and took it upon herself to interpret his wishes for the rest of the government. The U.S. Senate's refusal to ratify the League of Nations was one result of the way Edith Wilson handled this crisis, hence she must bear some responsibility for the diplomatic failures that led to World War II. It's never entirely enjoyable to read a book in which the author's distaste for her subjects is so evident, but Levin's relentlessly detailed (though always readable) chronicle fascinates with its depiction of "the influence wielded over great decisions by a woman of narrow views and formidable determination." --Wendy Smith

          Book Description

Elegantly written, tirelessly researched, full of shocking revelations, Edith and Woodrow offers the definitive examination of the controversial role Woodrow Wilson's second wife played in running the country.

"The story of Wilson's second marriage, and of the large events on which its shadow was cast, is darker and more devious, and more astonishing, than previously recorded."
          -- from the Preface

Constructing a thrilling, tightly contained narrative around a trove of previously undisclosed documents, medical diagnoses, White House memoranda, and internal documents, acclaimed journalist and historian Phyllis Lee Levin sheds new light on the central role of Edith Bolling Galt in Woodrow Wilson's administration.

Shortly after Ellen Wilson's death on the eve of World War I in 1914, President Wilson was swept off his feet by Edith Bolling Galt. They were married in December 1915, and, Levin shows, Edith Wilson set out immediately to consolidate her influence on him and tried to destroy his relationships with Colonel House, his closest friend and adviser, and with Joe Tumulty, his longtime secretary. Wilson resisted these efforts, but Edith was persistent and eventually succeeded.

With the quick ending of World War I following America's entry in 1918, Wilson left for the Paris Peace Conference, where he pushed for the establishment of the League of Nations. Congress, led by Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, resisted the idea of an international body that would require one country to go to the defense of another and blocked ratification. Defiant, Wilson set out on a cross-country tour to convince the American people to support him. It was during the middle of this tour, in the fall of 1919, that he suffered a devastating stroke and was rushed back to Washington. Although there has always been controversy regarding Edith Wilson's role in the eighteen months remaining of Wilson's second term, it is clear now from newly released medical records that the stroke had totally incapacitated him. Citing this information and numerous specific memoranda, journals, and diaries, Levin makes a powerfully persuasive case that Mrs. Wilson all but singlehandedly ran the country during this time. Ten years in the making, Edith and Woodrow is a magnificent, dramatic, and deeply rewarding work of history.

          2 out of 5 stars Tedious Speculation.......2005-04-07

I love biographies of historical figures but this one was a disappointment from the beginning...and a plodding read, to boot.

All it really manages to confirm is that politics is a dirty business and that corruption & deception are part and parcel of it all. The more things change, unfortunately, the more they stay the same.

As for Mrs. Wilson, she wouldn't be the only First Lady in history who was more of a WIFE than a politician!

1 out of 5 stars An uncritical, biased, attempt at biography.......2003-02-24

There are several fundamental flaws in Ms. Levin's book. First and foremost, she sympathizes with Col. Edward House. Plain and simple House is not one to treat sympathetically. A critical biography of the Wilson family would point out that Col. House deliberately attempted to sabotage the President's great peace plans starting in late 1916 (a great friend and confidant). House (and Secretary of State Lansing) collaborated with the British assuring them that the President would eventually enter the war on the side of the allies. In reality, President Wilson had no desire to enter the war (even after the German's resumed unrestricted submarine warfare in February 1917). Wilson waited two long months to finally make the decision. Edith Wilson perspicaciously distrusted House from the beginning. Maybe it was a hunch, perhaps she saw through his rather obsequious personality, but she destroyed Woodrow's relationship with House. In fact, after January 1917, House no longer held a high position in the President's mind. In short, Mrs. Levin is highly critical of the Wilson's because they abandoned Col. House.

Second, Mrs. Levin's assertion that Edith Wilson was the first female president is highly overstated. While she did control, along with Dr. Grayson and Secretary Tumulty, who and what the President saw she never made an important governmental decision. While Wilson was unable to appear in public he was able to read and perform limited duties of his office. Any scholar who has combed even the surface of Wilson's papers understands this. For an unbiased and complete review of Wilson in the months before and after his infamous stroke an interested reader should look at John Milton Cooper's "Breaking the Heart of the World." Cooper is the foremost living authority on Wilson.

My point here is not to completely excoriate Mrs. Levin's book but to caution readers of its flaws. There are much better books on both President Wilson and the first lady: the mentioned book by Cooper, Arthur Link's "Woodrow Wilson and the Progressive Era," and John Cooper's dual biography of Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, "The Warrior and the Priest." As a student of Wilson I am most disappointed by Levin's failure to observe Wilson's high moral purpose and the energy which he devoted to it (this is what eventually brought on the stroke).

          3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-06-26

Being a fan of presidential biographies and after having read some books on both of the Wilsons, I was very excited to see what appeared to be a dual biography of the couple. Levin's book was dry and downright boring . It is a very interesting and debatable premise....whether Edith Wilson really "ran" the White House when Woodrow was incapacitated by stroke.
My complaints are that the book was much more Woodrow than Edith and I am still not sure I feel like I buy Levin's theme that Edith was the first female president.
I was surprised to learn just how incapacitated Wilson was and how little the country was aware of.
This could have been a much better book.

2 out of 5 stars It must be me.......2002-04-30

Checking the other customer (and editorial) reviews, I find that no one had the reaction I did - this is a very poorly written book on an interesting subject. Author Levin wears her agenda on her sleeve from Page One, repeatedly skews the narrative to her own purposes, and fails to footnote responsibly.
What's more, her chronology is so haphazard, and she skips around so much, that the reader is never quite sure what year or country we're in at any given time, or what the heck is going on, or who said what to whom.
Add a boatload of odd editorial boo-boos and you have a very disappointing book.

          3 out of 5 stars Edith Wilson---The Woman Who Wasn't President.......2002-03-29

In many ways, this book is very much a "bait and switch." The cover promises that you will be reading the "First Documented Account of the Woman Who Was President." The chapters on Edith Wilson's early life and relationship with Woodrow following the death of his first wife also lead you in that direction. Those chapters imply that Woodrow shared virtually all important presidential papers, sensitive documents, cables, and thoughts with Edith, which would somehow prepare her for her stint as president as soon as he has the stroke that we know is coming.

But, as we slog patiently through the middle chapters waiting for the stroke that will make Edith president, we begin to not care because we realize that Woodrow is so "arrogant, egotistical, and poor at negotiation" (to paraphrase the Amazon editorial review) that anyone would be an improvement. Alas, Edith is worse, much worse, in that ultimately she is a cipher. Rather than the deft amateur who has picked up oodles of useful information from her preparation in the early chapters and actually does something as "President," Levin makes it clear that Edith was absolutely nothing more than a crabby gatekeeper to the stricken president who was totally incapacitated for months. Others in the administration made the few important policy decisions that actually were made.

This book, however, is useful because the lead-in gives you real insight into the man, his wife and the personality quirks that ultimately would doom his presidency----although most of us would not know from conventional history that his presidency was doomed or in fact bad in any way.

I encourage everyone to read this book in sequence following Theodore Rex, which I did. Most of us know Teddy Roosevelt as little more than a caricature and Woodrow Wilson as nearly a saint because of his striving for the League of Nations. These books, however, make it clear that Teddy Roosevelt was one of the great presidents (certainly one of the most capable) and Woodrow Wilson one of the worst. Edith Wilson never was president---not by a long shot.

As for Levin's writing, I felt that Abigail Adams was a much better read, but maybe the subject was simply more sympathetic.

Elizabeth Wurtzel writes with her finger in the faint pulse of a generation whose ruling icons are Kurt Cobain, Xanax, and pierced tongues. A memoir of her bouts with depression and skirmishes with drugs, Prozac Nation still manages to be a witty and sharp account of the psychopharmacology of an era.

4 out of 5 stars An Enlightening & Pure Portrayal.......2007-08-06

I just finished reading this book and felt a pressing and overwhelming need to express how thankful I am for having read it. Elizabeth Wurtzel painted a completely pure portrayal of herself and her struggles with depression. While the pages were filled with endless internal monologues that some reviewers commented to be whiny and ranting, it was completely essential to understanding the twisted, irrational and often selfish thoughts that plague the minds of the depressed.

I agree that if you cannot relate to depression, it would be easy to dismiss this book and its validity immediately, but I urge you not to!! If you can have a little patience with Wurtzel, open your mind to the possibility that depression is a real disease, and take a second to get into the distorted mind of one of its sufferers, you will walk away with a better understanding for those who struggle with it.

One last point...I would like to thank Wurtzel for discussing how scary it is to go on anti-depressants. Depression becomes so engraved into who you think you are that it is scary to leave it behind. While the darkness of depression is not pleasant, it's familiar. It's terrifying to leave the comfort of the familiar behind. It can feel like you're leaving yourself behind, it can feel dishonest and fake, and it can feel like you failed by your own means and are resorting to chemicals. But if anti-depressants are your last option, don't be afraid. You'll soon realize that depression is like any other disease - it can't always be beat with a strong will. Take the help if you need it - you'll finally uncover your true, undistorted self. I know I did.

1 out of 5 stars The worst book I have ever read-.......2007-07-15

and I have read a lot of books, so that's really saying something. Zero stars! Rambling, boring, self absorbed, obnoxious and almost impossible to get through. I couldn't have cared less what happened to the author-I just wanted this book to end. Trying to be deep and it's just the same old I hate life tripe. Elizabeth Wurtzel must be a painful person to know.

2 out of 5 stars Get me outta here.......2007-05-28

Gutsy and confronting, yeah, but I hated it. Elizabeth Wurtzel revealed herself as stuck in depression but also whiny, attention-seeking and spoilt. This makes it a very unenjoyable read. Her mother gets assaulted and her immediate thought is something like I can't believe this is happening to me! And sure, taking a minor overdose is worrying, but don't call it a suicide attempt if you know it's not going to kill you. She does admit that she doesn't know how to be a grown-up and that was how I saw it too: it was hard for me to feel for her or her depression when she revealed herself in an unsympathetic way.
A good writer makes you feel things, good or bad, sure. But I read on WikiP that after her second book got poor reviews she became a drug addict ... so she could write another book about how hard things are. This gets little sympathy from me, which is a shame because these are topics we all need to be aware of and emotionally intouch with. 2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, honest portrayal of severe depression. .......2007-05-10

A previous poster mentioned that if you cannot relate to Wurtzel that you will not enjoy the book. I agree with this only to an extent. I have by no means suffered severe depression (though I'd say that I've experienced a certain amount of non-severe depression), but I can most certainly relate to being a college girl with a "bright future," with next to nothing to be happy about. Whereas I do believe she wrote this book as a memior, and not a universal piece meant to speak to the world, I think she points out many aspects of society that lead to such a large-scale rate of depression in the US and the world. I'm happy there is someone out there that speaks to the "average achieving female." People believe that because a girl is not poor, or fat, or ugly, or gay (etc, etc, etc) that there are no "reasons" for her to be depressed. I think it is beautiful that Wurtzel was able to display depression for what it really is. It is contextual and inhibiting. It is a epidemic that is co-created by the societal attitudes and expectations infiltrating our own ideas of what it means to live. She makes no attempts at pleasing everyone, and writes straight from the heart-- as she said, like rock and roll. She gets a 5 from me.

2 out of 5 stars Interminable, Sluggish, and Frustrating..........2007-04-22

When i finished Prozac Nation it felt as if i had been reading a book the size of a webster's dictionary and the excrutiating mental pain of it all was over, finally over. The day i finally got to close that book was nothing less than a sigh of relief.

            This is what i thought:

            1. I thought it took her an awfully long time to get to the action. She, in my opinion, spent forever going through her family structure. Her relationship with her mother, her relationship with her father. The drama and arguments and abadonment and pain, pain, pain. She elaborated on it to the point where it was whittled down to a trivial matter in which it seemed she was simply whining about, exaggerating and droning.

            2. Her dialogue bothered me. Most people who write memoirs (marya hornbacher for instance) do not directly quote people since, especially since these books are written in retrospect, with only the author's memory as a source, it's almost impossible to remember every word of every person you have ever met. Thus, i wasn't convinced these interactions with other people were really genuine. Not only that, but the dialogue was dramatic and cliche and sappy so much so that you could almost hear the classical background music. It was actually pretty embarrassing.

            3. She, like she did in Bitch, used far too many references. Some of what she alludes to are well-known movies and books but most of them aren't. She uses them toward the beginning incessantly, a sad attempt at comparing them to her depression as though it would make it any more vivid. It didn't. In fact, it required so much stopping and starting that i got a headache and mostly skipped those pages where i was sure she simply wanted to showcase her oh-so-overwhelming knowledge of art and literature and blah blah blah. I took it as a manifestation of the fact that she didnt have the ability to use vivid adjectives and prose to illustrate various situations, but that she was name-dropping for no reason...

            4. It's frustrating as all hell. She drones on and on and on about how miserable she is, how she just wants to end it all, but how she "doesn't have the energy". She falls in and out and in and out of these "black wave" phases that simply make you think, rather calously, "here we go again" instead of sympathizing with her at all. You wait and wait for a culmination of a pseudo-suspensful build-up (a suicide attempt, a huge breakdown) that never really happens. When she does, i guess, get down to her ultimate low, she relieves us only with some random suicide attempt in the bathroom of her therapist's office that is, as horrible as it sounds, quite disappointing. The teeter-totter cycle of frustration that she puts the reader through is not at all worth would i would describe as an inept ending. But still, you maybe find yourself reading on, in hopes of some Great Big Finish Off that will never come.

            5. Her character, quite frankly, makes you sick. It's not just that is a whiney, shallow, narcissistic brat--that is all very true--but it just seems like the entire book is a haughty manifestation of a woman who, despite all of the things she does to intentionally screw up her life, gets away with it all unscathed. She is a bitch to her mother and her friends but still they support and continue to love her in the end, she neevr does any of her work at Harvard but still she manages to graduate, she is supposedly so low-class, so poor, but still she can afford trips to Dallas and Rhode Island and London and NYC and back to Cambridge. It is almost impossible to feel sorry for, or relate to this woman.

            6. While there are many problems with this book, i do still think that there are alot of profound lessons about life that this book brings to light: The fact that "when you feel everything intensely, you ultimately feel nothing at all, because everything registers at the same decibel." How the little, mundane things are what keep people wanting to live, how a nation can somehow come to accept the notion of a pill as an answer to every emotional adversity, how madness is "too glamorous a word to convey what happens to people who are loosing their mind"...all of these theories she posed in which i found very insightful and almost beautiful.

I also think Wurtzel is a good, solid writer who has the ability to create something brutally honest and eloquent. This book, unfortunately, was not one of them...

The contents deserve 5 stars, but the horrible printing deserves none! I gave it 4 stars because I didn't want to mislead people to think there's anything wrong about the contents.

I took out the original edition from the library and was enthralled by the brilliant patterns. I was happy to learn that it (along with other volumes in the series) has been reissued by the Schoolhouse Press. I quickly ordered this and the first volume. However, I was disappointed (no, make that disgusted) by the poor printing quality. In the original edition, patterns with 3, or more than 3, colors are printed in colors, which makes sense, because it's the only way to show the color patterns properly. Some people have commented on the "not so tasteful" color combinations in the original edition. But colors are a matter of personal taste and can be easily changed. At least one should be able to see how different colors interact in a pattern. In the reissue, they're in B/W and are impossible to make out! Even the 2-color patterns that are B/W in the original edition came out dark and muddy. Had I come across the reissue in the library I'd have bypassed it and missed out on a treasure. It's such a shame because Walker's books are timeless classics and should be in the possession of every serious knitter--novices or veterans. My suggestion: If you can, take out the book from your local library and make photocopies of the patterns you like. Then pray that some day some conscientious publisher would do justice to Walker's classics.

I had this book many years ago and lost it during a move. I am so glad it has been reprinted and made available again. Barbara Walker's books are classic and a must have for knitters of all experience levels. Nowhere else will you find such a variety of knitting patterns contained in one book.

I couldn't wrap my head around how great a stitch pattern book could be until I got this! I'd always looked at other similar books and thought I could have come up with something like that on my own, or that I'd seen the stitch before in every other book. I ordered this and the first book sight unseen. I'd heard so many positive reviews that I decided to bust out the big bucks and add them to my library. True the pics could be a bit clearer (they are in black & white), but I still could see them and get a good idea of what I'm looking at. I found lots of inspiration and new ideas. So exciting! If you need to just have one book, the first or the second would be great. The second book has some cool edgings not found in the first, but otherwise they are equaly fantastic. Worth it!

                        Book Description

Readers of the first book in this two-volume series (A Treasury of Magical Knitting) have fallen in love with the new world of Magical Knitting, a dimension so simple yet so captivating that one could spend a year exploring the huge variety of designs which Cat offers. Beginning with Cat's unique Moebius Cast-On, which is so easy that she usually demonstrates it in workshops behind her back while twirling slowly around on one foot, the reader first learns to knit a Moebius band, or scarf. This is the magic key that opens the way to all the other designs. The Second Treasury includes felted baskets (with no inside or outside!), felted fringed bowls, felted and unfelted sling bags, six different felted cat beds (one with paws and a tail!), and the trifold designs, including a knitter's bowl with pockets for tools and a place to keep working yarn away from playful felines. The Felted Needle Cozies, colorful, highly textured sheaths to hold straight needles, and the felted wallets are both excellent patterns for beginners and first-time felters. The book includes detailed information on felting, designing, and yarn substitutions.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Moebius Worlds.......2007-08-23

I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend. I immediately knew I wanted to make the marvelous moebius scarf pictured in the book. Cat's photographic directions on how to do the magical cast-on were excellent, and I managed to make a scarf. It finished with an applied i-cord edging, which I had never done before, but once again, her photographs made the directions very clear. I've made 3 of these scarves and they are quite fascinating.
I'm now ready to attempt some of the wonderful baskets that she features in the book. I want to see how some of them would work up in self striping yarn. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something a bit different.

                        4 out of 5 stars Excellent fun!.......2007-07-21

Although I find the projects in the first book more interesting, there are enough in this one to justify buying it - especially the bowls and cat beds. The Mobius Cast on pages are very clear, as are the instructions for Round One. I used her suggestion of a smaller needle on the left side and found my stitches slipping quite nicely on my Denise cords. No need to go out and buy more circs. Hurray! However the suggestion for using two circs on the body of the bowl was not necessary as I used a 16 inch and then double pointeds at the ending.
I am having great fun using up partial balls and adding eyelash and ribbon yarn as fun striping and edging. Also I had been wanting to learn the I-cord bind off for a while. Cat's instructions are definitely easy to follow. This is a book for adventurous knitters unless you have worked the first book so are familiar with mobius knitting.

2 out of 5 stars Not as great as I thought it would be.......2007-02-14

I bought the "Treasury of Magical Knitting" and this book. One would have been enough.

                        1 out of 5 stars emperor's new clothes.......2007-02-09

I paid nearly $30 for this book and wish I'd spent it on something more worthwhile. The Moebius cast-on is nothing more than a provisional cast-on done on a looped circular needle. While the introductory project, a Moebius scarf, drapes nicely, it's hardly worth a $30 book just for the casting-on method. The rest of the designs are unattractive. I couldn't care less if the strap on a bag is twisted. Ny cats would undoubtedly turn up their noses at a knitted bed (no matter how many hours I'd spent on it). And unless I'm missing something in the photos, anything felted won't show whether it's been knit by the moebius cast on or simply begun as a strip conventionally cast on and off, given a half-twist and joined at the ends, and the long side's stitches picked up again. I think we have something of a boondoggle here.

                        5 out of 5 stars Mobius rocks.......2007-01-07

I am a new knitter. After taking a class on the Mobius method, and getting into Cat Bordhi's fun and quirky head, it will be very boring for me to pick-up any of my other started projects. I have this and the first book, and was able to create many quick christmas presents that were a hit. Cat has found many ways that have simplified so many of the knitting methods, I am now able to transfer her methods to other knitting book patterns that I was afraid to try. I highly recommend trying these 2 books, you won't believe how how fun and strange it is, and knitting will never be the same for you.

REQUIRED READING FOR PARENTS WHO WANT TO GIVE THEIR CHILD THE BEST START IN LIFE

Must your charming five-month-old turn into a tiny terror? Are the "terrible twos" and public tantrums inevitable? Burton White, author of the classic The First Three Years of Life, doesn't think so. Basing his recommendations on thirty-seven years of research and observation, White shows how to bring up an independent, socially secure, and delightful child.

In his groundbreaking and easy-to-follow book, White takes parents through the normal development stages of their child's first thirty-six months, recommending the best ways to:

All parents who want a peaceful, loving relationship with their child instead of a constant emotional tug-of-war will find that Raising a Happy, Unspoiled Child is the one book that must have a place on their shelf.

                                5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-13

I bought and used THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF LIFE By Burton L. White during the late 70's! Now I'm
using the new edition of that book, along with RAISING A HAPPY, UNSPOILED CHILD in caring for my grandchildren and the toddler pre-school class I teach. I have never found a better book on caring for young children. It makes it possible to detect new stages and explaines how to deal with the changes in the child's behaviour. So-o-o helpful! I include these books in my gifts to young mothers.

3 out of 5 stars Not that helpful for parents of gifted children?.......2007-04-17

I found the advice in this book appealing (it's much the way I like to do things anyway). I was excited by the research. But I was frustrated because the description of the child's social development does not match my kids at all. My daughter was a delight from 14-24 months - the time frame when she was "supposed" to be testing me. She took direction, minimum tantrums, played well on her own, etc. Around 24 months the testing hit, and we are still in the thick of it (though outsiders tend to call her a "delight" - as mom, I see the testing going on). According to this book, a testing 2 year old is the mark of an overindulged child. But this simply isn't the case with ours. The book "Loosing Our Minds" has alot of interesting and useful information for parents of gifted children. Often gifted children do not develop according to neat little timelines that scientist and baby trainers prefer.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for expectant parents.......2007-01-15

This is an outstanding book that should be read by both expectant parents. It discusses not to raise a child that is how an A student, great athlete, or future world leader, but rather how to raise a student who does well in school, life, and society.

Mr. White interviewed parents from different cultures and child rearing methods and gives the reader straight advise on methods to improve your child's chances for success in their life ahead. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready to have their first and also as a re-read to those working on their second, third, etc. A definite must!

5 out of 5 stars Read this book EARLY and start EARLY when your Baby is young!.......2006-11-03

I'm writing this because my daughter has finally turned 3. She is as delightful as what's described in the book. Cheerful, affectionate, curious but able to respect boundaries. I'm a first time mother, and I started reading this book when my daughter was a baby. I found all the instructions and explanation very helpful and easily to apply. It's assuring that Dr. White's advice is based on research and observation of numerous real-life cases, rather than his imagination and personal opinion. This book emphasizes how one stage of a baby/toddler's development can affect the next. It's more a whole-program approach rather than a guide with quick-fix solutions. Those who seek the latter could be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars too many words, not enough practical advice.......2006-07-13

I found this book very hard to get through...lots of antecdotes and black text but hard to sometimes glean the "how to" info from all the verbiage.

The Paris dada manifesto of 1921 "Dada Overthrows Everything" posed a dare to posterity: "What does Dada do? 50 francs reward for anyone who finds the way to explain us." Cultural historian Herbert Lottman finds a great way to explain dada: by focusing on its court photographer, Man Ray. Man Ray's Montparnasse brings you into the salons of Peggy Guggenheim and Gertrude Stein, and gives context to his dazzling photos: his naked mistress Kiki impersonating a violin; Duchamp impersonating a woman named Rrose Selavy (pronounced "c'est la vie"); Picasso as a toreador; and Proust on his deathbed, asleep at last, seemingly at peace and in some sort of reverie.

If one man's life could sum up the explosively creative international arts enclave Montparnasse in Paris between the wars, doubtless it would be Man Ray. Who else crossed paths with Hemingway, Mayakovski, Calder, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Atget, Satie, Cocteau, the battling bohemians André Breton and Tristan Tzara, and Arno Breker, who wound up as Hitler's favorite sculptor? It was a tumultuously innovative time. The antiwar Swiss loathed the elitist French dadaists; dadaists quarreled with surrealists. Breton broke a writer's arm with his cane because he badmouthed Picasso, Duchamp, and Gide. When Malcolm Cowley punched out a reactionary restaurateur, it was a great career move--his fame spurred his nascent literary career. Apollinaire warned young dada friends against Cocteau ("Don't trust Cocteau! He's a cheat and a chameleon!"), because he was a darling of high society. Eluard said the surrealists would "shoot him down like a stinking animal."

What made Man Ray an instant insider was his skill with the camera and his refusal to join the culture wars. "My neutral position was invaluable to all," he said. "I became an official recorder of events and personalities." "He was like the kid on the block with the guitar invited to everyone's party," writes Lottman. "He lived a double life, dressing for dinner in society, then reassuming a bohemian posture for life among the writers and painters."

Lottman's book is delightful, a quick read that makes legendary names in the history of art come alive as wildly misbehaving young people. When Henry Miller would drunkenly harangue a café, he earned a catcall: "Why don't you write a book?" Reading Lottman, you get a vivid sense of how the overlapping lives in that astounding time and place erupted in art. It's a privilege to be invited to such a historic party. --Victoria Ellison

                                  Book Description

In the years between the two world wars, Montparnasse, on the Left Bank of Paris, was a hotbed of artistic experimentation, social change, and notorious affairs. Man Ray, the renowned photographer, was there to document it all: he took his camera into cafes, salons, artists' studios, and writers' homes, and the resulting pictures provide a singular--and intimate--perspective on this legendary period in cultural and art history.

Well-known cultural and social historian Herbert R. Lottman interweaves Man Ray's biography, filled with intriguing stories of artists, models, dealers, poets, and hangers-on, with his stunning black-and-white images of everyone from Picasso, Duchamp, Dalí, and Gertrude Stein to the famed model Kiki, poet André Breton, and Marcel Proust on his deathbed. The result is an enthralling view of that remarkable time and place, a subject that has endless appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Don't do Montparnasse without it, an interesting book.......2004-05-22

It was merely coincidence that one day after returning from Paris (I always stay in a small hotel on rue Delambre in Montparnasse) I was in a bookstore in Colorado and picked this up just for the title.

Little did I know it would explode with stories and much interesting stories (I'm no historian and cannot verify their accuracy) and anecdotes about the photographer Man Ray and all his notorious friends & lovers in the pre WWII era of Montparnasse when Dada and Surrealism were taking hold. As I had spent so many hours wandering the same streets and sitting in the same cafes it really grabbed me and was a very interesting read.

In short, if you: (any or all of the below)-

                                  Love Paris; plan to go there; have interest in the "lost generation/cafe society" era of Paris and particularly Montparnasse (one of my favorite areas in Paris);

then you are crazy if you don't at least check this book out. I'll use it for reference on my Montparnasse cafe crawls when I return next year.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating View of Montparnasse.......2003-05-01

Although I cannot attest to the scholarly quality of "Man Ray's Montparnasse", I believe that Lottman provides insight into this Parisian art district.

The reader learns about the different bars/clubs that were important. He learns who met where; the locations of various artist studios; and the general feel of the era. The dissent in the da da movement and the surrealist movement was significant.

Man Ray's neutral role in all of this is interesting. Lottman makes it appear that obtaining portrait sitters was one of Ray's primary goals. That along with women and his cars.

I enjoyed the book and believe that there is much to be learned from it. Caveat: If there are historicals errors as the other reviewer mentions, then it is difficult to know what you can and cannot believe.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Shallow Scholarship.......2002-07-02

Man Ray's experience in Paris is a fascinating and complex subject, certainly worthy of a book unto itself. Unfortunately the author of this book seems content to present his readers with out-of-date information. I do not pretend to be an expert on Man Ray. But I have researched extensively the life and photography of Berenice Abbott, whose own career and reputation is remarkably tangled up with Man Ray's. In Paris she worked for him as his darkroom assistant, shared his fascination for Eugene Atget's photographs, was fired by Man Ray (when Peggy Guggenheim called him on the telephone and requested a portrait sitting with her instead of him) and, until she moved back to the States in early 1929, competed with him for fashionable Paris portrait sitters. What I discovered in reading "Man Ray's Montparnasse" is that Lottman has not dug very deep into recently published scholarship, and thus perpetuates certain inaccuracies. For example, Lottman writes that Julien Levy, a mutual friend of Man Ray and Abbott, loaned Abbott money to purchase the Atget's archive in 1927, shortly after Atget's death. In fact, Levy did not invest in the Atget archive until 1930, three years later. Perhaps this seems like a minor detail, but for me it raises questions about the accuracy of the entire project. Moreover, other recent scholars have gotten this detail right, including Bonnie Yochelson in her 1997 book on Abbott, "Berenice Abbott: Changing New York: The Complete WPA Project" and Ingrid Schaffner in "Julien Levy: Portrait of an Art Gallery" (1998). For those interested in a more scholarly treatment of Man Ray's life and work, I highly recommend Neil Baldwin's 1988 "Man Ray: American Artist." For those fascinated by Paris in the early 20th century, I suggest Billy Kluver and Julie Martin's richly illustrated "Kiki's Paris: Artists and Lovers 1900-1930."

                                            Book Description

In this lively interdisciplinary study, Elissa R. Henken combines the tools of the historian and the folklorist to explore the development of a powerful, polysemous cultural symbol. Owain Glyndwr, called Owen Glendower by Shakespeare, led the last major armed rebellion of the Welsh against the English in the early fifteenth century. He has become an important symbol of modern Welsh nationalism. Henken examines the roles Glyndwr played both in his own lifetime and in subsequent centuries.
