1 out of 5 stars Sucks the joy right out.......2007-04-23

In comparison to Lonely Planet and Let's Go guides I've used in the past, I found this guide very disappointing. The author/editor can't seem to resist inserting his negative editorial opinion about every last city, village, hamlet, mountain, forest, castle and stone in either country. Cities are frequently described by their relative degree of "sovietness" or industrial decay. Areas in the countryside are typically described by their degree of industrial desolation, pollution, tourist exploitation, and environmental neglect. Even when he has something positive to say about a particular destination, it's couched in whingeing about something negative about something nearby. Humphreys' jaundiced tone makes visiting these countries seem like a trip to the Pennsylvania Rust Belt of the early 1980s. I've read travelogues that make Chernobyl seem more appealing.

Avoid this book. You're better off with Lonely Planet.

4 out of 5 stars A thorough and easy to read guide........2007-04-12

So, I've been to the area several times in my life and what I loved about this book is that it added so much more historical, little known facts, and helped to tie a lot of stuff together. These countries have changed a lot in the last 20 years and this is a very good book to have if you are travelling to the area. It is thick and full of info -- I meant to read it 'en route' like on the plane, and never got around to it, and then once we landed, forget it. But I referred to it a lot and read many helpful snippets.
    Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Did They Really Visit?.......2005-01-17

I purchased this book before a three-day trip to Liberec. Literally nothing that was written about the city was on target. Their opinion that the place was unattractive was, IMHO wrong. The recommended restaurants didn't exist; were incorrectly located on the map; or were absolutely terrible! The opening/closing times for the Bohemian glass museum in a nearby town were inaccurate.
Too bad I can't return it.
I'm planning on going back to the CZ. I'll take Lonely Planet instead.

3 out of 5 stars lots of detail but hard to navigate.......2004-06-03

This book is chock full of details, with history and facts impressively presented for sights throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia, places small and large. The dense pages are hard to navigate as they are formatted, making it difficult to find information quickly. Also, the author seems to have traveled by car and the book lacks practical information on public transportation, such as how long it takes to travel from one place to another and how much bus or train tickets cost. This book will provide you with great background information once you are already there, but for practical trip planning, I found I needed to refer to the Lonely Planet.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide.......2003-08-26

This is an outstanding guide. It's absolutely chock full of detail. In fact it's almost TOO detailed. I lived in the Czech Republic for an entire month this summer, traveling mostly on the weekends, and I found myself simply unable to see most of the stuff in this guide, even in Prague. It covers virtually every single museum in the country, and a lot of other interesting sights besides that often don't get into the dorky little travel guides most tourists buy (stuff like breweries and wine cellars). The eating section here is tremendous. It even lists Icelandic and Greek restaurants in Prague! The book has also got a great entertainment section, listing places like nightclubs, jazz bars, opera houses and similar venues of a cultural nature. The shopping section will tell you where to find places like English-language bookstores. And of course, it lists all sorts of accomodations (not just hostels and campsites).

The guide is also extremely detailed about what to see outside of Prague and Bratislava. Kutna Hora, Cesky Krumlov, and the Tatras obviously make it in, but you'll also find information about pokey little towns out in the sticks (heck, it's even got a section on notorious East Moravia, which a Czech friend of mine memorably described as the "a--hole of the country").

Finally, although you don't have to be a real outdoors kind of person to buy a "rough" guide, if you do like the outdoors, this is definitely the guide to buy. It has tons of information about hiking in the mountains, boating on the Vltava, places to camp, etc.

So basically you can't go wrong here. Light-weight, too. Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for an independent traveller........1999-10-24

My continued use of lonely planet guides is indicative of the quality I find. It is an excellent guide for us. We travel by car and lp is a plus for us as we can get to more remote area. It was right on target with the Czech & Slovak Rep guide. We found a wonderful place to visit and stay called Telc with their recommendation. My only criticism is that the binding did not hold up and the book came loose from it. It was difficult to turn pages because of occasional pages becoming loose.

5 out of 5 stars Full of essential info for all types of travellers........1999-04-21

Information ranging from the cheapest bus to get from the airport to the city, to the locations of the finest restaurants in town. More than adequate chapter on Prague, but the book really comes into its element talking about tiny exquisite villages in Slovakia's back of beyond!

THE CHARACTER AND GREATNESS OF WINSTON CHURCHILL: HERO IN ATIME OF CRISIS

        by Stephen Mansfield

Winston Churchill was one of the most extraordinary leaders of the twentieth century. What enabled him to stand so steadfastly when all those around him seemed to turn back in fear? What enabled him to inspire whole nations to endure the unendurable and to achieve the unachievable when all those around him had already surrendered all hope?

The Character and Greatness of Winston Churchill is a remarkable study of Churchill's leadership skill and answers these questions and more. The result is an account that is no less inspiring today than it was three-quarters of a century ago when the great man's shadow fell large across the world stage.

According to Henry Kissinger, "Our age finds it difficult to come to grips with Churchill.

The political leaders with whom we are familiar generally aspire to be superstars rather than heroes. The distinction is crucial. Superstars strive for approbation; heroes walk alone. Superstars crave consensus; heroes define themselves by the … future they see it as their task to bring about. Superstars seek success in a technique for eliciting support; heroes pursue success as the outgrowth of their inner values." Winston Churchill was a hero.

2 out of 5 stars If only Mansfield didn't avoid a few sticky facts..........2005-03-22

This could have been a very interesting book; however, in order to truly examine how Churchill's faith and worldview made him a great leader, Mansfield would have risked disproving his primary "black and white" thesis: Winston Churchill was a great leader because he was a Christian... or at least "Christian" as defined by Mansfield's largely conservative, evangelical American audience. However, much of this audience would likely have major issues with Churchill's Freemasonry and later Druidic involvement, or in Churchill's belief in and reliance upon oratory-which included evoking British mythology-to rally the undermanned and underarmed British and hold the Germans at bay until more substantive military assistance arrived. In some Christian circles, particularly those up in arms over the Harry Potter books that draw upon much of the same British mythology Churchill did, this might be considered borderline sorcery. As the Nobel committee noted when awarding him the 1953 prize for literature (not peace), "His every word is half a deed."

Going to the other untenable extreme as conspiracy theorists across the `Net have done, claiming that Churchill's involvement with the Freemasons (like FDR's) and Druids proves that he is just as Satanic as Hitler, is certainly not an academic nor intellectually honest alternative; however, glossing over and outright avoiding relevant facts and sketching Churchill as a two-dimensional "Christian" hero any good card-holding Christian Reconstructionist could proudly hold up as a Christian leadership paradigm does nothing more than cast this complex man (who apparently had a more complex, idiosyncratic, and potentially problematic faith and worldview than Mansfield lets on) as a modern-day King Arthur. However, given Churchill's love of and belief in the power of myth, particularly English myth, perhaps Mansfield's speaking the Myth of Churchill into existence is perfectly appropriate in Churchillian terms. If this were truly Mansfield's motive, the book might have been more accurately titled, The Greatness and Power of the Churchillian Myth. [...]
Structurally, Mansfield's brief case-study examination of Churchill as leader bears a passing similarity to how Howard Gardner examined the various internal/cognitive and external influences that create and shape leaders in Leading Minds: An Anatomy of Leadership (even though I personally thought Gardner did a better job of applying Mihalyi Cszikszentmihalyi's theories in an earlier book, Creating Minds). Based on a passing reference to Gardner's multiple intelligence theories in one of his other books, The Faith of George W. Bush, I wonder if Mansfield's treatment of Churchill isn't at least somewhat inspired by Gardner's work. However, reading this glossed-over, thesis-driven "study" just made me wish that Gardner had conducted this case study of Churchill in the first place.

4 out of 5 stars Work without Faith is Doomed to Failure.......2004-10-19

To his credit, Stephen Mansfield illustrates the decisive importance of religious faith in the life of Winston Churchill since his encounter with his influential nanny, Mrs. Elizabeth Everest (pg. 41, 50, 192). The vision of death that Churchill experienced when he was a teenager could also have fortified his faith (pg. 212). Too often, Churchill's faith is downplayed in the abundant literature available about his words and deeds (pg. 34, 221-227). Churchill was a strong-willed nonconformist who rarely chose the well-worn path for which he sometimes paid a heavy price in his life as Mansfield correctly states (pg. 43, 99-100, 203-206). Randolph Churchill, his emotionally distant father, had no much faith in his son until his premature death in 1895 (pg. 160). Randolph Churchill thought that Winston was just good for a military career, not clever enough to go to the bar (pg. 47, 96-97).

During his military service in India, Churchill realized that he had huge gaps in his learning in contact with men of his own age who benefited from both breadth of knowledge and ease of discourse. Driven by curiosity and ambition, Churchill embarked on a demanding program of readings on his weakest subjects. This eager pursuit of knowledge was a turning point in Churchill's life (pg. 54, 99-102, 161-162). It marked the end of youth and progressively revealed Churchill's emergence as an exceptional man (pg. 101).

Churchill probably best summarizes his life's philosophy in a three-tier question and answer in Savrola, his only novel:

        1) Would you rise in the world? You must work while others amuse themselves (pg. 57, 131). To merely exist was no better than death (pg. 134). Churchill's high talent and amazing energy were both praised and criticized (pg. 69-70, 85-86, 120, 129, 178, 188-190). Churchill could not stand the routine and the tedious. He was never idle. History transfixed Churchill and fed his vision of the world (pg. 70, 108, 139-141, 144-145, 209). Churchill deeply believed in action; he had a goal, a plan and an iron will to get things done (pg. 109-110). Churchill possessed an almost mystical knowledge in knowing the facts and seeing them as they were, as a critical step towards ultimate triumph (pg. 144). As Mansfield correctly points out, Churchill's weapons were his words, passionate words loaded with faith and vision (pg. 84, 147-150, 174, 179).

        2) Are you desirous of a reputation for courage? You must risk your life (pg. 57). Churchill had little regard for his personal safety, was not concerned with criticism where his principles were involved, and regularly stood firm before the most determined opposition (pg. 77, 79, 82, 120, 123-126, 130, 195-198). Churchill, however, was open to genuine self-criticism (pg. 155-158, 160). Unsurprisingly, Churchill was perceived as a political opportunist, a maverick without deep loyalty to any political party as he switched back and forth between Conservatives and Liberals between 1904 and 1924 (pg. 66). Furthermore, Churchill regularly flirted with death first during his military career and then in politics (pg. 57, 104-106). Yet behind the public persona that radiated an aura of power and confidence, Churchill could sink in periods of depression that reminded him of his weaknesses (pg. 155-156, 171, 213). Churchill acknowledged that without the help of the Almighty, he could have never succeeded (pg. 64, 72, 84-85, 115-117, 152-153).

        3) Would you be strong morally or physically? You must resist temptations (pg. 57, 132, 161). Churchill only asked of others what he required of himself (pg. 57, 106). Churchill never gave in except to convictions of honor and good sense (pg. 151). Churchill was not ashamed to show his emotions and compassionate nature (pg. 163, 172, 184). Churchill's happy marriage to Clementine Hozier is a testimony of their faith in each other, despite the many differences existing between them (pg. 119-122, 135-138). Churchill and his wife had to show much fortitude when dealing with the troubles of three of their four children (pg. 138, 153-154).

Churchill's character was forged in adversity. Churchill often learned the hard way. This rich experience he gained progressively turned him into a towering presence that could see farther than most people did. Churchill's enduring faith in both his destiny and the future of mankind was the ultimate driving force behind his greatness.

        Book Description

People living with chronic illness face many unique challenges. Doctors can hand out pills and potions; can perform manual therapies such as massage, chiropractic or craniosacral work. It has become the norm to rely completely on the medical professionals--to wait passively for the pills to kick in so one can go about their normal business. While helpful, this alone may not work for the chronically ill. Often the quality of life remains low and people are challenged to feel happy and fulfilled. They need more.

My Own Medicine is the story of one woman's illness and her quest to discover how to stay intellectually, spiritually and emotionally alive and fulfilled in spite of a largely uncooperative body. As more people turn to self-education to compensate for the fifteen-minute medical visit, the simple strategies in this book become invaluable. They lead to deeper levels of healing through the discovery of one's own power to impact the experience of illness. Author Diane Kerner leads those feeling buried by the force of unwelcome sickness to recognize where there is choice and to see that by rearranging habits and expectations, one can learn to enjoy life again--even amidst the aches and pains.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Medicine.......2004-09-01

Diane Kerner has generously made her own healing process with CFS transparent in "My Own Medicine" so that others may benefit and be inspired for their own recovery from chronic illness. Through the course of her illness, we are able to observe Diane re-wire her entire internal circuitry, her relationship to self. Her illness forced her to start from scratch in developing a self-concept and a daily routine that was compatible with the capabilities of her body and also, a clear reflection of her spirit. Diane Kerner is like one of your good friends who is smart, honest and full of heart; she has the rare ability to show her thinking; and you can trust her intention to help. If you or a family member has chronic illness, this book will help validate and empower the internal process that can deliver one out of suffering. If you are a health care provider, this book will bring encouragement and insight to your patients: it is very good medicine.

        5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Must-Read for ANYONE--Not just the Chronically Il.......2004-08-28

I love this BIG little book! Kerner hits the nail on the head about what it's like to have life as you've known it gradually swallowed up by long-term illness, and what it takes to find your way back to a rare new quality of joy and reach maximum recovery. Her validating observations, insights, questions, and humor reveal the ups and downs of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia in a way that left me no longer feelings alone and clueless (and I'm sure would have a similar positive affect on those who suffer with other conditions or limitations). Her honest prose and deeply moving yet matter-of-fact journal entries made me want my friends, family, boss, and doctors to read it so they'd know ME better. It's inexpensive enough that I AM giving them all copies, and short enough that some have already read it (two wanted to give a copy to friends who are on a destructive path playing fast-and-loose with their health)! While brief and easy to read, it is in no way short on wisdom or practical strategies; they're all laid out in a straight-shooting yet 'freindly' tone that could strike a chord with almost any reader and merits re-reading. Clearly, I can't say enough about this book or Diane Kerner as an author and survivor.

Excellent in every way! Another crown in aran knitting, along with "Aran Knitting" by Alice Starmore.

5 out of 5 stars The Love of Vikings.......2006-04-15

Having spent years of listening to stories told by my Bedstamor about Denmark and all the lovely places she used to live near that had an abundance of Viking artifacts, it was a thrill to see many of the Viking symbols described in those stores come to life in the sweaters! I adored the detail about where each design came from along with a photo of the artifact that inspired the cable pattern.

This book is fantastic for lovers of history, Scandinavian art, and knitting. It has helped to inspire many designs for knit gifts that go rather quickly. All the individual cables knit very quickly and are easy to memorize, though they do have very intricate twists and turns at times.

This will be a book I pass along to all the knitters in my family.

            3 out of 5 stars you can't judge a book by it's cover!.......2005-12-16

It is a very . beautifulbook and I will endure to knit several other things from it at some time. However, the tunic I knitted was slightly off and I had to add a stitch to the cable pattern to work it out and it's the first thing I've spent over a year knitting (oh the slowness of my knitting needles) and I absolutely detested it. IT'S STILL A LOVELY BOOK THOUGH!

5 out of 5 stars Cables and cables.......2005-07-09

This is a lovely book containing patterns that consist of glorious textured panels and serpentine cables. While I fully endorse tackling complex projects, this is perhaps not the best book for someone who picked up knitting needles yesterday. I have made a couple of the sweaters, and found the directions easy to follow. In both instances, they came out fabulously. Take Lavold's (and most every other knitter on the planet) advice: knit a tension swatch! These sweaters can get all wacky if you aren't careful.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you to the next level.......2005-04-12

The charted cable designs in this book are truly inspired and creative. I think that a beginner should be able to understand the patterns, as the directions are clear. That said, I find it hard to believe that most people would wear these garments on a day-to-day basis. Some of the hats are even comical. Personally, I have only made the pillow, but have used the charted designs extensively to adapt other patterns. I would highly recommend this book for its expert advice and unique ideas, but not for the clothes patterns as wholes.

              Book Description

As our children are pushed harder than ever to perform so that they will one day 'make the grade' in the adult world, parents are beginning to question the wisdom of scheduling childhood's basic pleasures. In Reclaiming Childhood, William Crain argues that rather than trying to control a young child, the best a parent can offer is 'a patient and unobtrusive presence that gives the child the security and the freedom to explore the world on her own.' He examines how children find their way to natural development through experiences with nature, art, and language, and makes a strong case for child-centered education-a movement that may be under fire, but that is very much alive.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Read This Book.......2007-01-10

I loved this book, and recommended it to everyone I know. I am a teacher and I wanted every parent I work with to read it. Many people took me up on it, and every person who has read it, also loves it. I agree with everything that is said in here and I wish more people would follow the philosophy that this books suggests. As a teacher of outdoor education, it taught me to just let nature teach more often, and not to interfere so much with information. A walk in the woods is an educational experience all by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Yes! Let the child be a child or you'll pay later!.......2005-09-12

Excellent book that might slow down the American way of trying to get children ahead of the game. Pressure may work for adults but cheats children of the time they need as children. If they're to become the adults we're pushing them to be, give them the gift of time as a child.

4 out of 5 stars Good but goes too far.......2003-05-12

I agree with the author's complaints that early childhood is not sufficiently appreciated or recognized by educators as something to be nurtured, explored, and extended but I disagree with her continuation of this complaint into later childhood. It's sad that kindergartners are now expected to read, add and subtract, and do homework. But, at some point, children must realize that all learning is predicated upon knowing certain basic facts intuitively such as multiplication tables, some historical dates, historical events and people, grammar basics, and other things that can only be memorized. Learning those is not always fun or creative but it is necessary for a literate population. The author believes otherwise -- she believes that all education must first and foremost begin at each individual child's level and that educators must follow the child, not the child the curriculum. I thought that kind of individualized, do your own thing, education ended after the educational farces of the 60's and 70's when children could be enormously creative but could not read or write.

Children today are not as well educated or informed as children were in our parent's generation. Few, if any, fads du jour have lasted more than a few years. Parents, instead of demanding serious work from their children, belittle homework, tests, and hard work that interferes with their children's extracurricular activities, and TV and computer time. Teachers give in to the parents because, to do otherwise, is to risk losing their jobs because they're "too tough". Spare me! Most educated parents can remember that they learned the most from their toughest, most demanding, teachers, not the ones who gave everyone A's for effort. Parents who enforce appreciation for learning through perspiration tend to have the best educated and most successful children.

As a family practice resident I am trained to focus on acute physical ailments. Yet so often parents approach me with concerns about their children's behavior and emotional state. Reclaiming Childhood offers a much needed reminder that scholastic achievement is not the sole indicator of healthy development.

5 out of 5 stars Returning childhood to the kids.......2003-04-18

One of the great strengths of this book is that it reminds the reader of what it really was like to be a child: how imaginative, artistic, and connected to nature kids are naturally. It's hard for me to remember now, but there was a time when my favorite activity was hanging out in the backyard and just looking at leaves and under rocks, sitting quietly, and thinking things over. I could do this for hours.

It also made me recall the year I spent conducting research in preschool classrooms. I visited many wonderful preschools, but I remember being particularly struck by the atmosphere in the Montessori classroom I visited. There was a sense of calm there that I have never seen anywhere else. At first it seemed eerie; surely these kids were being coerced into behaving so quietly and going about their business in such an orderly graceful way. I remember in particular the child who was bringing around a tray of nuts that he had shelled and offering them graciously to the other children. But the longer I stayed, the more I realized that this deep sense of peacefulness originated from the kids' satisfaction in being allowed to choose their own tasks at their own pace.

William Crain reminds us of some of the charateristics of children's development that have fallen by the wayside as the push for academic achievement (as measured by standardized tests) has become stronger and stronger. The child's desire to be connected with nature, to use her imagination, and to produce art and poetry is valued so much less in our schools than the three R's. As a result they are in danger of disappearing from the curriculum completely, especially in schools with limited resources. Yet these activities are precisely what researchers in the last two centuries have observed to be at the very heart of childhood.

The assumption that our children's future is more important than childhood itself has become so commonplace that it is difficult to shake it even for parents who are committed to a parenting style that is child-centered. This book challenges the assumption that academic achievement is a goal unto itself, rather than a by-product of kids who are happy, well-loved, and allowed to grow at their own pace. It will remain a powerful reminder for parents committed to a child-centered parenting style of what childhood is for in the first place.

                Book Description

Andrew Potok is an intense, vigorous, sensual man--and a gifted painter. Then, passing forty, he rapidly begins to go blind from an inherited eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa. Depressed and angry, he rages at the losses that are eradicating his life as an artist, his sources of pleasure, his competence as a man. He hates himself for becoming blind. But as he will ultimately discover, and as this remarkable memoir recounts, it is not the end of the world. It is the beginning.

                Ordinary Daylight

This the story of Potok’s remarkable odyssey out of despair. He attempts to come to terms with his condition: learning skills for the newly blind, dealing with freakish encounters with the medical establishment, going to London for a promised cure through a bizarre and painful “therapy” of bee stings. He wrestles with the anguish of knowing that his daughter has inherited the same disease that is stealing his own eyesight. And then, as he edges ever closer to complete blindness, there comes the day when he recognizes that the exhilaration he once found in the mix of paint and canvas, hand and eye, he has begun to find in words.

By turns fierce, blunt, sexy, and uproariously funny, Andrew Potok’s memoir of his journey is as shatteringly frank as it is triumphant.

                  Book Description

In this colorful, detailed account, nineteenth-century Irish patriot and revolutionary Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa describes his life's experiences, tracing his early boyhood growing up on his grandfather's farm in Renascreena, his thirteen-year imprisonment for his involvement in the Fenian movement, and finally his exile to America, where he continued his activities in support of Irish independence.

In this epic memoir he tells of learning the Irish language as a child, of sitting around turf fires and hearing tales of fairies and battles, of landlords seizing the wheat crop for rent when the potato crop failed, and of his family being evicted from their home. Through it a portrait emerges of Ireland in the mid- to late 1800s, revealing what life was truly like for the Irish people.

Rossa's rambling style, with frequent digressions and asides, makes the narrative read like a fireside conversation between friends. He tells his story with frankness and honesty but without bitterness. Although he died six years before his beloved Ireland won its independence, his words no doubt influenced the next generation of revolutionaries.
