Book Description
The first comprehensive treatment of the physiology of plants under stress.
Physiology of Plants Under Stress: Environmental Factors, Volume 1 is a valuable resource for plant physiologists, horticulturists, crop scientists, plant breeders, agronomists, and plant molecular biologists. It provides the most detailed coverage, to date, of the impact of a wide range of environmental variables upon plant structure, development, and growth. Comprehensive in scope, it explores:
* Plant stress physiology fundamentals, including growth regulation, membranes, phytohormones, carbon balance, and the use of stable isotopes in stress studies.
* Relevant physical, chemical, and biological aspects of all forms of environmental stress and their effects upon plant metabolism.
* Multiple levels of adaptation, including behavioral, morphological, anatomical, physiological, and biochemical responses.
* Plant responses to specific environmental stresses such as drought and flooding, light intensity, high heat, chilling and freezing, and other.
* recent advances in microbiology and genetic manipulation in the regulation of metabolic influences.
* And much more.
each chapter concludes with study/review outlines and self-study review questions, making this an ideal text for graduate level courses in plant physiology, horticulture, agronomy, and crop science.

Book Description
Detailed routes and advice for heading into the wilds of Alaska and northwestern Canada are provided in this guide for RV and tent campers. This grand tour of Alaska covers in detail the Alaskan Highway, routes throughout the Yukon and Alaskan outback, and the ferry system in southeast Alaska. Campgrounds throughout the region are listed with pictures, descriptions of amenities and recreational opportunities, maps, and contact information for each. Important details are discussed, including border crossings, budget planning, vehicle preparation or renting an RV, appropriate clothing, road conditions, and possible wildlife encounters. Recreational information on hiking, mountain biking, boating, rafting, kayaking, and viewing wildlife is also included.
Customer Reviews:
A 'must have' for RV'ing Alaska!.......2007-09-23
I waited to review this book until our return from Alaska. I must say it was amazing! We were driving a 32' Winnebago Chalet from Great Alaskan Holidays (a good experience, I would like to add) and wanted to eliminate getting 'stuck' in tight spaces so we quickly learned to look for those warnings in the book. The campgrounds are described very accurately, the pricing info was reliable and the route descriptions and depictions are also reliable and organized. We also relied on The Milepost for general info on services and sights but for locating campgrounds, this book was invaluable! We RV with Foghorn's books on the west coast of the lower 48 and they are very good too!
Easy to read.......2007-07-17
We found the book very informative, easy to follow, and great value for the price. We plan to use it on our next trip to Alaska and the Yukon.
VERY COMPLETE & COMPREHENSIVE.......2007-05-24
As I write this review, my husband and I are about a week and a half away from leaving on our 4-month expedition to Alaska. We are leaving in early June 2007 and expect to return to Texas by October 1, 2007. I bought this book in April 2007 and have looked at it extensively since I bought it. I'm pretty sure it will be at least as valuable to us as the Milepost will be, if not more so. It begins by answering many questions one may have about what kind of clothes to bring, what to expect at the border, how much money to bring, the best places to see wildlife, insects, laundry - you get the picture. It covers just about everything. It appears as though the authors have visited and rated every campground, private and government, and every place where it's legal to park your rig along the Highway. Directions to each campground are given according to its milepost marker and its GPS location. There are little pictures of each town and where each campground, store and point of interest is located. It describes the places not to miss along the way, as well as good places to fish. I only wish the authors had included all that information through Canada as well!
I'm pretty sure this guide will be well-worn by the time we get home. If you're planning to RV through Alaska, you need to get this book!
Great Campground Guide.......2007-03-12
I should probably wait until after our trip in June, 2007, but so far this has been a great campground guide for planning. I have been using it in addition to the Lonely Planet book and the Milepost.
Absolutely Essential!.......2006-10-21
We recently completed a four-month motorhome trip to Alaska. We had several books with us, but the most consistent good information came from this book. The campground descriptions were right on. In addition to camping, when we had to decide whether to see one attraction vs another, the book's advice was invaluable. Don't leave home without it!

Difficulties.......2002-12-25
What can be said about this monument to Jefferson scholarship? I am sure that somewhere in universities around the United States there are "scholar squirrels who want to put down this invaluable resource in Jefferson studies. It is always the way that mice attempt to gnaw at lions. This is not a perfect work (and my remarks refer to all of the books in the series as a whole), there are somethings, namely Sally Hemmings references which are wrong and will not sit well with American 21st century mores. There is the issue of slavery which was handled much differently 50 years ago than it is now.
Jefferson is not worthy of our interest because of Sally Hemmings and because he kept slaves. Jefferson is great because of the Declaration of Independence and his fight for the rights of man. While it may have been hypocritical to preach liberty and keep slaves, it is doubtful that slavery ever would have been abolished if Jefferson had never gained the prominence that he did. This book and the others that follow show why we should continue to honor the public man even though his private side may have been wanting.
Jefferson: The President second term 1805 -1809.......2002-04-18
Jefferson: The President second term 1805-1809 is the fifth volume in a series of six, by Dumas Malone and brings us into the last four years of Jefferson's Presidency. I found that the author worked harder to bring out Jefferson the man in this volume... maybe because of the actions of others, (Burr and Marshall), but it is apparent that the author worked hard on this volume.
Jefferson sponsors the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Congress gives Jefferson a little slack, but Arron Burr takes the domestic heat. The Barbary pirates are delt with, but the political views of Jefferson and Marshall heat up to a boiling point. But, Jeferson's second term seems to hit a nadir and he is longing for his Virginia mountain top home where he can finally retire after forty years of service to government.
I found the scholarship to be impeccable, balanced, seemly sympathetic. The overall narrative is detailed and at times engrossing and engaging. Even though we can see Jefferson's excitement with the Lewis and Clark Expedition, we also see heartbreak with Burr and vituperation with Marshall.
Overall, this volume brings us to one of the most interesting times of Jeferson's life... that of retirement. This is one of the most interesting of the volumes so far as we see Jefferson working out the problems that others have wrought upon him.
Superb Research, Stilted Prose.......2001-11-04
Dumas Malone (1892-1986) devoted his academic career to studying Thomas Jefferson, and this superbly researched volume reflects that lifelong scholarship. This book is one in a six-part series examining the life of our third President. I read this book for a college class and immediately grasped the unending pressures that President Jefferson faced in his second term. Malone examines the decision-making options available to Jefferson, usually (and perhaps too often) supporting the eventual route that the President decided upon. This volume's research and analysis is worthy of five stars, not to mention the 1975 Pulitzer Prize the series captured. Unfortunately, Malone's stilted prose - the weakness of most academic historians - produces a rather laborious read. Thus, four stars overall.
Book Description
This work presents the life history of a philosopher who experienced severe, recurrent, and misdiagnosed mental disorder. The compelling narrative portrays the father’s seventy-five years: his childhood and adolescence, his high levels of achievement, intermixed with recurrent episodes and brutal hospitalizations, his marriage and family life, his tenderness as a father, and his gradual decline following years of maltreated bipolar disorder. Themes of self-image, resilience, causes of serious mental disorder, accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, and linkages between social context and mental disturbance are intermixed with the narrative. Alternately harrowing and uplifting, this work captures the experience of growing up in a family with severe mental illness as well as the courage and dignity that can emanate from mental disorder. This poignant work will be of strong interest to the public at large and to those in the mental health fields.
Customer Reviews:
More than a biography.......2005-04-20
As the other reviews here accurately explain, this slim volume encompasses much more than an insightful look at how his father's long-misdiagnosed mental illness affected the author and his family. That would be quite enough. Yet, while some scholarly writers have one idea and repeat it volume after volume, Hinshaw deftly delivers much more than the title suggests, weaving autobiography and biography, this country's rather checkered history of diagnosing and treating bi-polar disorder, the genetic and environmental factors of brain disorders, and much more.
That he does so cogently and compellingly for the layperson stands out as notable because he is a professor who chairs the prestigious department of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and a leading scholar of issues related to attention deficits and other child disorders. As a lay volunteer in the AD/HD community, that is how I first learned of Dr. Hinshaw. It is rare to find a psychologist who can help the average person bridge the knowledge gap between behavior and neuroscience, and I am grateful for his work.
A rare portrait of human development.......2003-05-02
Stephen Hinshaw demonstrated exceptional courage and scholarship in this passionately written portrayal of his father's struggle with bipolar disorder. Blending scientific perspectives with personal insights, Hinshaw provides a tour of his father's obstacles and triumphs. It is a compelling story about the far reaching implications of severe psychopathology yet it is firmly rooted in inspiring messages of hope and resilience. Hinshaw somehow manages to find the appropriate "voice" with personal accounts narrated within a larger context of science, philosophy, and public policy. It is exemplary in its passion, analysis, and vision for the future.
an excellent bipolar biography.......2003-03-18
This is an excellent book that anyone interested in bipolar disorder or mental illness in general should read. Hinshaw is an excellent writer and brings the details of his father's struggle with bipolar disorder richly to life. The effects of the disease on his father's entire existence are profound and complex- many details and nuances of the illness are described. The book is partly an indictment of the entire mental health field for not providing better care for his father. An interesting and complex read. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
Get This Book for Everyone You Know.......2002-11-07
This is one of the best books on any topic I have read lately. Anyone who knows anyone with a psychological problem (that's all of you with a pulse, by the way), should read The Years of Silence are Past. The title refers to the silence that descended on Stephen Hinshaw's family in the face of his father's bipolar illness (manic-depression). The book is so resonant because countless families with a mentally ill family member live with the same deafening silence. Hinshaw manages to tell the story of his father's battle with bipolar disorder in a compelling, compassionate, unflinching way while also communicating clearly and thus educating about this devastating illness. This book puts a human face on a problem that is too often still stigmatized in our society. I hope this book will help put an end to the collective silence that amplifies the stigma and associated pain for people with mental illness and their famlies. I also hope it leads people with mental illness to seek and benefit from treatment.

Customer Reviews:
Great foundation book.......2007-08-23
This book lays a great foundation for anyone starting out. Practical ideas and methods are shown for wiring track and accessories. Care and maintenance. High quality book with very thick glossy pages and many many color photos along with some B/W photos. This would be helpful for anyone interested in 3 track O-gauge even if they are planning on using non-Lionel trains and accessories.
ideal.......2007-03-09
if you are serious about lionel trains this is a must have for info
Big Book of Lionel.......2006-07-11
The book covers a wide range of subjects on planning, building and operating a Lionel O-guage layout, but does not go into a lot of detail. Both Post-War and Modern Lionel trains and tracks are covered as is the newer TMCC electronic controls. The photos of existing Lionel O-gauge layouts are excellent, but the book did not describe the type of track nor were track layout diagrams provided, which would have been very informative. Nevertheless, the book is interesting and provides a good overview of what to consider when planning and building a Lionel O-gauge layout.
Great for beginner and expert Lionel train fans.......2006-03-22
This book with its excellent pictures and detailed descriptions will satisfy the model train neophyte as well as the old veterans.
It is geared especially to the famous "O" gauge Lionel trains of yesteryear. It can serve as a reference book for those just starting out or rediscovering the joys of model train collecting and operating layouts.
The Big Book of Lionel.......2006-02-26
A very good book, full of interesting tips and facts. Full of good information on Lionel trains.

by Jean Feldman. Over 400 ideas to make those 'between times' teachable moments and smooth transitions with simple and fun activities. 288 pages.
Customer Reviews:
Very complete.......2007-01-09
I haven't used a transition book by anyone else to compare, bu thtis book is incredibly detailed. It has discipline, morning, circle, attention getting, games, rhymes, chants, stories...and then What, Why, When, How and preperation information for each activity. And their are hundreds of them! I use it for my own 3 kids and the 3 extra I watch for daycare.
Well-Organized and Solid..........2005-12-15
None of these techniques will revolutionize your classroom, but Jean Feldmen organizes this book (like all of her books) with masterful structure.
Separating the chapters by activity and sub-organizing each chapter by topic allows a teacher to economically turn to the transition she needs with little time to spare. The Discipline and Attention Getter chapters will save tons of time!
One added bonus: Black and white pages that copy easily on any copy machine.
Will keep the little ones busy with lots of ideas.......1998-07-10
I am ordering this book, my current volume of this book is from the library. This is an excellent book. I am a day care provider, and my children were thrilled with all the stuff we found inside this book. All of the materials were easy to get too. I highly recommend it to any teacher of preschoolers and up; and to every day care provider.

Book Description
THE PAINTER'S DAUGHTER brings to life the artistic and political turmoil of fifteenth-century Florence through the stories of Alessandra Lippi, who follows Botticelli's career and reveals the mystery and controversy surrounding the the celebrated "Birth of Venus."
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining masterpiece.......2004-11-23
Having returned from Florence and viewing such masterpieces, my interest in Botticelli's art was satisfied with research and other works of fiction of this time. This novel transports you to the time period and gives great perspective of the different works of art of Botticelli and Lippi. A most enjoyable novel.
In search of my roots!.......2004-03-30
I will go out and buy the book, since I'd never heard of it, and am trying to find information on my ancestors! I didn't even know Fra Filippo had a daughter! I traveled to Ancona, birthplace of Fra Fillipo Lippi and my grandfather, Cipriano Lippi. I don't know where Alessandra was born exactly, so I'm definately buying the book!
Combining art history and fiction.......2002-05-03
I found this book to be a carefully crafted, entertaining and educational experience. The author has clearly undertaken a great deal of research and paired it with her talent for telling a story. Much of Botticelli's work has been described as "lyrical precision," I honestly don't think it would be too far-fetched to use the same description for this book.

Book Description
`A Wife, A Witch, A Murderess and A Whore' refers to the great scandal of Frances Howard, convicted in 1616 of murder with her husband, the Earl of Somerset. Howard was branded as a `lewd woman', as well as the the more unsavory epithets comprising the title, and became an icon of female villany.
Has she been misjudged? In a fascinating examination of both the historical evidence and cultural representations of Howard, David Lindley presents important new insights into the case against her. In doing so he radically challenges the assumptions which have constructed Howard as a deviant woman, raising questions not only about the perception of women in the 17th century, but how society continues to do so.
