A good book (for me).......1998-09-04

Slavinski's books describe bicycle touring in a way that most closely approximates my own rhythm and pace of cycling. The experienced cycle tourist will know what I mean. I recommend newcomers who want a book to try one of Slavinski's, as well as books by other cyclists. Perhaps you'll discover a writer who "speaks" to you. If not, then you may end up writing your own. Or you may become a truly independent rider--no books, *no* maps. Try it!

This was so hard to read I didn't finish it. Was expecting more of a biography than a collection of letters.

The greatness of a founding father .......2006-01-15

Adams was in my American childhood a neglected founding father. Washington was the father of the nation, and Jefferson the great author of the 'Declaration of Independence'maker of the Louisiana Purchase, Madison the great author of the Federalist, Monroe the enunciator of the doctrine which determined US attitudes to the whole of the Americas. But in recent years there has been a great interest in the work of Adams including the outstanding award-winning biography of David MacCullough.
I have read only bits of Adams, and sense a great intelligence, organization of mind, firm conviction of democratic principle. There is a sense with him as with almost all the founding fathers of their having been somehow on a higher level than our present political leaders.
I do not know how much time non- scholarly readers will wish to an Adams volume but there is outstanding political writing here, and a selection of his remarkable correspondence.
Just to give a taste of his language and democratic principles I quote a snippet of his Inaugural Address in 1797.

"For it is the people only that are represented. It is their power and majesty that is reflected, and only for their good, in every legitimate government, under whatever form it may appear. The existence of such a government as ours for any length of time is a full proof of a general dissemination of knowledge and virtue throughout the whole body of the people. And what object or consideration more pleasing than this can be presented to the human mind? If national pride is ever justifiable or excusable it is when it springs, not from power or riches, grandeur or glory, but from conviction of national innocence, information, and benevolence."

I am a teacher and have had close contact with families who have had dyslexic children. This author does a great job of communicating the emotion, questions, struggles, and fears that a mother has. Her son also writes vignettes at the end of each chapter expressing his own point of view and struggles and fears. She weaves into the story enough clinical information to define dyslexia, explain its symtoms, and discuss ways to deal with it. But the main impact is the author opening her heart to the reader.

The book, Reading David, by Lissa Weinstein helped me deal with my own son's struggle with dyslexia. Lissa and David touch the emotions of both mother and child through the unique, overweleming journey of dyslexia. The reader experiences the triumphs and struggles of everyday living. This book taught me that my son is a very bright, unique individual who desires to fit in. I felt someone was feeling what I was feeling and that it was okay to be angry one day and joyful the next because living with dyslexia is such an up and down rollercoaster.

I have only been reading a few pages a day as I cry with every emotion expressed that hits home - and they all do. What Lissa Weinstein has been able to write about has been cathartic for me. A unique voice on dyslexia.......2003-09-30

This is a terrific book, a virtual roadmap for anyone interested in dyslexia, or learning disabilities in general. Weinstein is a clinical psychologist and university professor, with a depth of experience in dealing with childhood learning disorders that is challenged when she has to deal with her son David's dyslexia. As a mother, she understands and conveys the dynamics of dyslexia in a way that illuminates both the helplessness any parent may feel when faced with a child's reading difficulties, and as a psychologist, she offers real self-help, insight, advice and solutions (all with a minimum of jargon) for dealing with a multi-faceted problem that does not go away just by adding some tutoring or changing the curriculum. The passages describing her dawning awareness that her own son has a serious learning disability, and her own feelings of guilt, are especially poignant. The real reward in this book, however, is the voice of her son David - whose words, taken down verbatim by his professor mother, reveal with astonishing directness the hurt, bewilderment, and courage of a child who just doesn't begin reading along with his classmates and the strategies he employs both to try to learn and to hide his failures. The book is a must for anyone dealing with learning disabilities, in the classroom or the home.

This book is so inspirational--lots of ideas and pictures that will move you. It shows so many techniques and designs that you are only limited by your imagination. If you only have one book in your library, this is THE one to get.

Not for a beginner.......2006-03-26

This book is not for someone that has no background in jewelry/metalsmithing. Not for a beginner, or newbe. It is in the Quarto style form the publisher. It does cover what is promised. with short descriptive statements. Good photo's for somebody that has read a couple of beginner books. And has some knowledge of the techniques involved, they will not find the short descriptions to be a problem. I own it.

The first twenty pages are interesting because the author take the time to describe the tools and material needed for jewelry making.
But after the author try to describe the most jewelry techniques in a minimum of page: only one or two pages for each technique.
It is very insufficient.The photos are also to small.

I loved this book! It covers so many different kinds of jewelry making. There's enough detail to teach you with plenty of ideas to stretch your imagination. Definitely worth the money.

Real Jewelry Making Techniques Book.......2002-01-24

This is the book I looked for. It has large color photos and detailed step-by-step instructions. It is not only for beginners but also covers challenging techniques. Although the book concentrates on making techniques, it gives very nice examples to apply the techniques.

I liked the idea pictures in this book, but ultimately the "how-to's" left me wanting for more. I didn't feel it went into enough detail of things such as, how to make the rocks look natural and how to place them on the rubber liner so they don't wash away immediately. A good idea book, though.

Good book. Pictures are good and the descriptions and details from the creation of Ponds, Streams and Waterfalls is the most complete of all the books that I have purchased or read. It could do a little better job of describing how to integrate a Bog Garden with a Pond. I still have questions about that.

Overall the best of the breed.

I bought this book to help plan a water garded. It is easy to read, keeps your interest, answered my questions, and had good pictures.

I also bought "The Pond Doctor"(not as good for a first book, but good reference book), and "Pond Basics 3" (a pamphlet from Emperor Aquatics, quick read and short answers).

Have always had goldfish and their like but had never gone beyond the aquarium before. Finally this year I had the chance and the desire to build a pond. Of course I needed some help and this was the book I picked up.

I found this book to informative and helpful much like many other books on the topic, but what had sold me was the winter care part, seeing as my pond is in that mode six months out of the year...

Great Book for Beginners.......2000-11-07

This book is an excelent starting place for those who have ever wanted to install a pond or stream in their yard. It gives complete instructions about planning, purchasing, and building outdoor water gardens. It even lists the varieties of fish and plants to put in your pond. It also has a section on winter care of your ponds. This was helpful to me because it gets very cold during the winters where I live, and I needed to know what to do to ensure the success of my pond. Overall, this is a great book!

Great do-it-yourself book.......2000-04-05

The best all around garden pool and fountain book that I've read so far. I have a couple of other garden pool books including "The Rock and Garden Expert" by D. G. Hessayon, but none of the other books provide the depth of design ideas that Ortho includes in this book. Although the "Rock and Garden Expert" does have a better of selection of plants. Ortho's book also includes illustrations on exactly how to install the different types of ponds as well as information on filtration systems, edgeing, lighting, etc. The back of the book also contains lists and photos of various plants and fish that are suitable for the different types of water gardens. If you only want to buy one book on garden pools, this is the one.

This book is so real, cuts through the b.s., and tells women what is essential for keeping sane in our relationships with men.

I picked up "What Smart Women Know" in a bookstore about 15 years ago, when I was 21 and in a bad relationship. I have kept this book, and I know it has helped me through many other relationships, over the past 15 years.

I am not even going to cite sayings from the book, because I couldn't do it justice that way.

I feel lucky I wandered into that book store and grabbed this book. I have read many other self-help/relationship books, and they did not help me in any way near as much as "What Smart Women Know"

I think many of us would ultimately get the love we deserve if we paid atttention to much of the advice in this book.

one of my favorites.......2007-04-05

I bought this book for the first time after my first marriage ended (should have read the book before I married him). Not long after, I thought I was in love with a man who had some interesting problems. Thank goodness I read the book and realized that I couldn't help him. I've given multiple copies of this book away and have loaned it out to many others. It's currently on loan to a friend who is going through a divorce. I'm married to a wonderful man and I like to flip through the book just to remind myself how lucky I really am to have a man who loves me and respects me. He understands me and I understand him. I love being a smart woman because I'm a happy woman. I'm about to order this book for my niece. She doesn't yet know what smart women know.

I am a smart professional woman who has (and still is) learning the "hard way" about relationships. This book is an awesome resource for a quick pick-me-up. It's super easy to read ... You can turn to any page and start reading without being lost. I've "doggy-eared" so many pages that I want to remember so I can flip to them quickly. It's full of one-liner realities that you never think of, but they make a whole lot of sense. Some of my favorites: "Smart women know that a woman's most powerful sense is her sense of self;" or "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want;" and "Smart women have the sense to appreciate a man who has no interesting problems."

I am buying this book for all of my single (and should-be-single) girlfriends for their birthdays... Whether they want it or not! It's a must-read for women who are in the bad habit of not valuing themselves enough in relationships.

I highly recommend it!! I carry it in my purse!

My daughter is the best judge.......2007-01-24

I selected this book for my 16 year old daughter a few months ago because she has a boyfriend who was doing and saying things that made her uncomfortable. She devoured it and made many notations in the margins. Since then, she has asked me to order the book for two female friends. She became very empowered by the straight forward advise given in the book and seemed relieved to finally be able to solidify her priorites. We are a family that models healthy relationships, but sometimes teens need various forms of healthy support in order to make values clear(church, teachers, mentors). This book was one of those sources for my daughter.

A Reference Book for Women!.......2006-09-30

I found this book to be very honest and helpful. It's written in a conversational tone that's like talking to a respected friend. I feel that it is a MUST READ for women of all ages, whether single or in a relationship. You may not agree with everything in the book, but there's a wealth of news you can use. I also highly recommend other books by this author!

In one dictionary of art, Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) is given only eight lines and dismissed as a "minor French animal painter." In another, she is lauded (along with Edwin Landseer) as "the most famous animal painter of the 19th century." In this illustrated catalog for a French and American traveling show of 58 paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture by or about Bonheur (who dared to wear trousers and smoke cigarettes in public), she is described as someone who today would be a lesbian, a self-publicist (like her friend Buffalo Bill), and a defender of animal rights. She was also the most gifted member of an amazing family of artists, led by her father, the painter Raymond Bonheur, who (like Charles Willson Peale) set up an artistic workshop in which four of his children (Rosa, Auguste, Isidore, and Juliette) were trained in the manner of Renaissance artists. But all that is long forgotten, and if anyone today has heard of Rosa Bonheur, it is inevitably because of her finest and most famous painting, The Horse Fair (1853). Purchased by Cornelius Vanderbilt, it was brought to the U.S. (where her artistic abilities and personality "meshed with American interest in innovation and bravura") and now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bonheur's account of her own life story, set nicely within Klumpke's narrative, sheds light on such topics as gender formation, institutional changes in the art world, governmental intervention in the arts, the social and legal regulation of dress codes, and the perceived transgressive nature of female sexual companionship in a repressive society, all with the distinctive flavor of Bonheur's artistic personality.
