Description:
The influence of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Glomus macrocarpum Tul. and Tul. on Bradyrhizobium-inoculated soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill var. IAC-14) growth, nutrients and Pb uptake was studied in soils with different levels of Pb. Mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants were grown in a soil amended with 0, 150, 300 and 600mgdm^-^3 of Pb, using Pb(NO"3)"2, and plants were harvested at two different growth stages: flowering and maturity. Soybean shoot dry weights were not affected by increasing doses of lead in the soil, but the number of pods decreased significantly. Nodule dry weights of mycorrhizal roots were reduced by soil Pb additions, although the mycorrhizae stimulated plant nodulation significantly. The inoculation of AMF in soybeans provided higher rates of nutrients uptake, mainly P, inducing greater mycorrhizal-soybean growth. Thus, mycorrhizae improved Pb uptake, produced shoots with Pb concentrations 30% lower than those of non-mycorrhizal plants, at the highest Pb concentration added to the soil. AM fungus was more susceptible to the higher Pb doses added to the soil than the soybean plants, decreasing both root AM colonisation and spore production. This work indicated that a concentration of 600mgdm^-^3 of Pb in the soil interfered with the establishment of double symbioses between AMF and Bradyrizhobium, and with the fungus perpetuation in the soil.

Book Description
Ward H. Lamon’s biography, which first appeared in 1872, presented a rustic portrait of the young Lincoln as he would be depicted in numerous books and later in movies: "He wore flax and tow linen pantaloons—I thought about five inches too short in the legs—and frequently he had but one suspender, no vest or coat." Straightforward in tone, the book was the first challenge to the filiopietistic school of Abraham Lincoln biography.
One of Lincoln’s few close friends, Lamon based his book on materials gathered by Lincoln’s law partner William Herndon. Lamon’s was the first Lincoln biography to be based on this indispensable collection. Joining forces with a politically well-connected ghost writer, Chauncey F. Black, Lamon produced a book controversial for its treatment of Lincoln’s paternity, his courtships and marriage, and its assertion of Lincoln’s lack of Christian faith. The Life of Abraham Lincoln from His Birth to His Inauguration as President was initially rejected by reviewers and the reading public as too invasive of Lincoln’s privacy. Today’s readers can relish the vivid account of Lincoln’s boyhood, his young manhood, and his years in the Illinois legislature. Full accounts of Lincoln’s relationships with Ann Rutledge, Mary Owens, and Mary Todd are equally valuable.
Book Description
"When I was growing up, I learned that if you were a girl you went to school and college, then you married, became a wife and had a family. . . . When I became disabled, my journey, I was pretty sure, was not going to take me in those directions. What was I supposed to be? What kind of life was I supposed to have?"
Once polio had made her a quadriplegic, Cass Irvin didn't know where she fit in or what would become of her. Neither did her parents, teachers, counselors, or rehabilitation therapists. And so began her search for a place to call home.
In this memoir, Cass Irvin tells of the remarkable journey that transformed her from a young girl too timid to ask for help to a community activist and writer who speaks forcefully about the needs of people with disabilities. As a young girl she was taken to Warm Springs, Georgia, where she learned about living as a disabled person and found a hero in Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the famously if silently disabled president. Bright and inquisitive, Cass soon began to question the prevailing assumptions of a society that had no place for her and to question her own meekness.
In time, her keen sense of injustice gave her the courage to fight for a college education. That personal victory emboldened her to find the means to live independently, but it also persuaded her that political work is the key to enabling all people with disabilities to live fulfilling lives. This book, then, is testimony to the importance of community building and organizing as well as the story of one woman's struggle for independence.

The nicest book on Labradors.......2002-12-08
I don't have a Labrador, but my friend borrowed it since she was going to buy a Labrador puppy and she found it helpful. And it's nice to look at, easy to transport, interesting, and the pics are nice.
A wonderful book!.......2000-06-25
All about your Labrador Retriever is a wonderful book. It is 32 pages but full of very helpful information! The price is very low for such a great book. I encourage any one who has a lab or is planning on getting one to get this amazing book. When you get a puppy you know that sooner or later your new puppy is going to puddle on the floor, this book will teach you what to do about it.

This book provides step-by-step design techniques and track planning tips to save model railroaders time, money, and headaches. This must-have book also covers aspects of prototype freight and passenger operations, route design, and contemporary railroading.
Customer Reviews:
Track Planning for Realistic Operation.......2007-03-12
This is a great book on how to run and plan your next model railroad. Gives great idea's and samples of yards, train movements and point to point locations. Not just for beginers.
The Master's Masterpiece.......2006-09-05
John Armstrong is one of the best known names to the model railroad hobby. He has written extensively but this book is his finest work.
A person interested in railroads finds himself caught up in lots of detailed scenes and complex trackwork. Armstrong explains what it all does and why it is arranged in the way it is. He does this by explaining railroad practice in the real world and then by looking at the problems faced by the modeler. He does so in a lucid and interesting manner...for the first half of the book.
While the first half of the book is dedicated to teaching about how railroads operate, the second is intended to teach how to model them effectively. He explains broad general concepts and then refines things and explains them in easy stages. He knows where the pitfalls are and he points out solutions.
This is a useful book for anyone from beginner to advanced but especially the beginner.
Covers the Basics and Some Langaippe, too,.......2006-07-10
I don't think anyone in the model railroad hobby can say enough about the contributions of the late John Armstrong. His layout designs are masterpieces of getting the most out of a given space and working with the tradeoffs we all enevitably face. The book gives an overview of prototype operations and then goes into countless ideas and pointers for design and operation. I found the section on curve planning (p. 76), schematics (Chap. 8), and laying out an "easement" (p. 116) particularly useful. I recommend this to anyone planning a first layout or for anyone building a second layout after messing up their first. It is a good companion to "Classic Layout Designs," also by John Armstrong.
Track Planning for Realistic Operation.......2006-04-01
Some concepts are not for the beginner. Let's you use your imagination to create outstanding layouts.
Better than advertised........2004-11-15
This book will teach you exactly what it claims. Numerous prototype examples are used throughout the book to give the reader an insight into how you can design a realistic track plan. This book has helped me to better understand why prototype railroads arranged track in certain ways. Excellent book, highly recommended.

In 1976, artist, writer, and gardener Robert Dash bought 1.98 acres in the Hamptons, on the far Eastern end of Long Island. Intending a private hideaway where he could paint in peace, he created Madoo (Scottish for "my dove"), a unique and intriguing garden which after decades of his thoughtful and loving attention has now become a conservancy.
Inspired by time spent in his garden, Dash began writing a biweekly gardening column in the East Hampton Star. Dash reflects on the seasons, the gardeners he has known, interesting or frustrating plants, the naming of roses, and the existence of fairies, to name only a few of the essays sparked by life at Madoo and now gathered in this collection.
Dash infuses his essays with a gentle wistfulness, but he also doesn't pretend to love every growing thing. Forsythia, he states in the like-titled essay, is "an absolute ass of a color" whose "high-colored blooms annoy as much as hyperactive children and little yapping dogs." Dash's irreverence is a fine balance to his passion.
An advocate of not just working in your garden, but truly enjoying it, Dash says, "Doing nothing but hanging about and musing and letting one's feeling roam is also what a gardener is all about." One gets the idea that Dash has done quite a bit of loitering and lolling at Madoo, and we, the recipients of his thoughtful and witty musings, are the better for it. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
Madoo is an artist's unusual and beautiful garden at the far end of Long Island. Described in the New York Times as "Robert Dash's ever-changing masterpiece," it has been pictured in many books and magazines and visited by lovers of gardens from this country and abroad.
Now the author/artist/gardener describes his making of Madoo in a book that is as charming and entertaining as it is enlightening. Dash's artist's sense --or senses -- of the movement of air and the effects of light and color suffuse all his writings, and show us new ways to look at our own gardens.
As with Henry Mitchell's books, one learns more from reading these essays than from a dozen how-to books. And whether we like to make gardens or simply to look at them, Dash has given us a book to keep by the bedside, where we can read and reread our favorite pieces ("Fairies"? "Manuring"? "The Name of the Rose"? "The Garden Tour"? Too many to list!) over and over again.

A Winter's Tale.......2001-02-06
It's winter and I can't work in my garden, and I've already ordered seeds and plants for Spring. I miss gardening! Well, I discovered a really great book about gardening. It's Notes from Madoo by Robert Dash. He is a painter, author and gardener who has had a garden in eastern Long Island NY since 1967. His book is all about his experiences, what plants survived, which ones didn't, his tips and techniques. For example, he uses hand tools and no chemicals. It's not a reference book or highly technical. No pictures and no index. Mr. Dash is not preachy (he's no Martha Stewart, if you catch my drift). But it is a beautifully written, almost poetic collection of articles from a man who clearly loves gardening. And I love this book!
Customer Reviews:
You really are what you eat!.......2007-08-03
I'm new to the Feingold Program (1 week) and have already seen the changes in my children's behavior. The information Jane Hershey provides in this book is motivation enough to change the way and what you eat. My 8 year old son already stopped craving sweets and junk food and he is calmer and behaves the way I've been raising him for the past 8 years.
Just one example of many things that have changed: when I'd take him grocery shopping, he'd be on a different aisle than me, looking at things, not paying attention, or begging me to buy some toy or junk food. Now, I keep turning around to see where he is because he's so quiet and he's right there besides me, following me willingly throughout the store. In fact, he's telling his 4 year old brother to follow Mommy. Temper flare ups are rare now too.
I've chosen to eliminate high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup and MSG as well as the additives. I'm also buying more organic fresh fruits and vegtables, just thinking about pesticides makes my skin crawl. You read this book, you'll never want to eat these things, let alone feed them to your kids again!
My grocery bill really hasn't increased that much. I'm buying more food at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, but now I've eliminated a lot of (convenient) foods from Costco, Target and my overall bills are better since I'm not shopping there as much and buying items I really don't need. Those of you who shop at Costco know what I'm talking about!
I'm buying three more copies to give to my friends for their kids. It's too important not to share this valuable information.
There is hope!!.......2007-06-15
My 7 year old has always had learning and behavior difficulties. When he was around 5 I kept telling myself he was just a "typical" boy and would outgrow them. When he was 6 I told myself he was just a little behind and would catch up. However when he turned 7 and still could not read, write, talk properly or even sit still for more than 30 seconds and on some days would turn into a demon of a boy that literally scared me.... I knew something was not normal. He has always a short attention span, speech impairment, terrible night mares, sporadic aggression, and poor motor skills. But it didn't make any sense because he is SOO smart in other ways. I knew he didn't have a learning problem because he is capable of learning and I knew he shouldn't have behavior problems because most days he is the sweetest person ever, just has all those days when he can't control his rage. It didn't add up.
For years I've questioned my parenting skill . I never could understand how he could be so sweet one day and just plain evil the next. He knew he was different and I know it hurt him, I've heard him asking his sister to help him be better, "Rebecca please show me how to be like you so mommy won't cry in the bathroom anymore."
I started to search for a solution.
One night while searching online I came across a website about the Feingold Program: www.feingold.org
When I saw the list of symptoms my mouth dropped open....every single one was the same as the list I had made just a few days before about Jarod. I finally had my answer.
Jarod is severally sensitive to synthetic food additives and salicylates!
The Feingold Program focuses on eliminating artificial additives (artificial colorings or dyes, flavorings, artificial sweeteners, and the preservatives BHT, BHA, and TBHQ ) and salicylates from the diet of children who are sensitive to these chemicals. For some amazing stories about other children similar to Jarod go here: www.feingold.org/pg-success.html
These chemicals "short circuit" his brain and he is not able to function properly with them in his system.
I e-mailed the organization and in just a short time I received a wonderful reply from the director. She confirmed that the problems Jarod was having would probably be helped by the Feingold Program. She quickly mailed off a copy of the book "What Can't My Child Behave" which I recommend to every parent to read. After I put the kids to bed I opened it up and read and read....until 4 in the morning. I was overwhelmed by the possibility that Jarod could be "normal" someday. He would be able to attend a sleep over, be at ease in public and enjoy a good book. Reading the stories from the other moms made me cry, I was not alone!
I wish that every mom could read this book as it is information that everyone needs to know. We have been on the diet for a few weeks now and Jarod is perfect and as long as he does not eat any unsafe foods he is normal. I am keeping track of his progress in a blog and you can view it here: http://jarods-diet.livejournal.com/
I am so thankful for Jane Hersey and all the other wonderful people who volunteer their time to help moms like me!
Required reading.......2007-05-13
This book was so eye-opening and gave us not just hope but a plan that there would be an alternative to medicine. It is the first book we read. Once you read this book, keep reading others on the same topic.
Excellent Book for Parents of Children with Learning or Behavior Problems.......2007-01-10
This book really changes lives. I recommend it as a teacher and as a parent. It's inexpensive but the information is so important. Nutrition really does impact our children's behavior.
So you don't believe us Granola Wackos?.......2006-05-31
Well, my sister had severe ADHD and Hyperactivity, to the point she was kicked out of a dozen daycares. All we heard was what a horrible kid she was. Finally in 1987 we found Dr. Feingold's book and within weeks she was listening, respecting boundaries and going to sleep at a decent hour. My mother kept her on the diet and each year communicated to her teachers that her behavior was contigent on her diet. If the teacher deviated, he/she would have to accept the consequences. Believe me, one incident of giving her kool-aid or another forbidden food and they did not want to repeat it. Over the years, I have recommended this book to many people. Few have taken the time to do what is necessary to help their children, prefering a quick fix with a "pill." I can assure you, when I have children, they will be on this diet! Oh and my mother was a senior executive at Sprint before retiring, I'd hardly call her a Granola Wacko!

The Crisis of the African American Architect: Conflicting Cultures of Architecture and (Black) Power
ASIN: 0415929598 |
Book Description
Since the end of the Civil War, African-American architects have been responsible for creating houses, schools, research institutes, and other significant buildings throughout the United States. The Widener Library at Harvard University, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and Tuskegee Institute's Butler Chapel are just a few examples of prominent buildings designed by African Americans. But even though many of the structures they helped create survive to this day, most of these architects remain virtually unknown. br br This unique reference source brings the lives and work of these pioneers to light for the first time. Written by over 100 experts, ranging from archivists to architectural historians, this book chronicles African-American architects from the era of Emancipation to the end of World War II, filling a key gap in existing scholarship. br br The number of architects and the scope of their accomplishments will surprise and fascinate readers. Some 160 illustrated A-Z entries include biographical essays as well as commentary on the work of each architect, offering a wealth of information about their lives, their buildings, and the obstacles many had to overcome. Articles provide insight on the history of architectural education at traditionally black colleges and universities, such as Tuskegee Institute, Howard University, Hampton Institute, Florida A&M, and Prairie View A&M. The book features a helpful introductory overview of African Americans in domestic architecture, and an appendix containing a list of buildings by geographical location and architect makes for a handy reference tool br br Practical and accessible, this singular work is essential for any library collection serving scholars and students of African-American history, architectural history, and American history in general.
