      Book Description

Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as "a masterpiece" (John A. Gable, Newsday), it is the winner of the Los Angeles Times 1981 Book Prize for Biography and the National Book Award for Biography. Written by David McCullough, the author of Truman, this is the story of a remarkable little boy, seriously handicapped by recurrent and almost fatal asthma attacks, and his struggle to manhood: an amazing metamorphosis seen in the context of the very uncommon household in which he was raised.

The father is the first Theodore Roosevelt, a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. The mother, Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt, is a Southerner and a celebrated beauty, but also considerably more, which the book makes clear as never before. There are sisters Anna and Corinne, brother Elliott (who becomes the father of Eleanor Roosevelt), and the lovely, tragic Alice Lee, TR's first love. All are brought to life to make "a beautifully told story, filled with fresh detail", wrote The New York Times Book Review.

A book to be read on many levels, it is at once an enthralling story, a brilliant social history and a work of important scholarship which does away with several old myths and breaks entirely new ground. It is a book about life intensely lived, about family love and loyalty, about grief and courage, about "blessed" mornings on horseback beneath the wide blue skies of the Badlands.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting biography of not just TR, but his family as well.......2007-10-19

David McCullough once again really had me enjoying reading about someone I have never been particularly interested in. This telling of TR's life story is different from most in that the story ends before he makes a big name in politics. TR would not have been the leader he was without the family that raised him and this is the focus of McCullough's book. We learn of his parents, his siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. We learn of his home-schooling, the family vacations, his severe childhood asthma (I learned a lot about asthma from this book), and his love of nature and natural history (though his habit of nonchalantly shooting every creature in sight, particular birds, and stuffing them is a little disturbing). Overall, it is a very interesting read.

      5 out of 5 stars American Aristocrat.......2007-09-11

I commend the author for forging a career as a non-academic historian. Few of our tenured scholars write this well, few could get tenure in this day and age expressing affection and admiration for this great republican President and his family of Dutch aristocrats. McCullough is thorough and critical, but never hesitates to show his warm-hearted respect for this extraordinary man who devoted his life to conservation and social advocacy, two fields of life-endeavor totally abandoned by the modern Republicans. Founder of both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum, TD was the product of that strange era in American life when the rich identified with America but were not duped into celebrating mediocrity and such popular institutions as the public schools. TD was tutored at home and kept away from the "coarsening" influences of the general public. He then set about to enrich the masses by supporting great institutions. Interesting, TD's arch-rival, John D. Rockefeller, dedicated his life to the same goals. In the 19th century, the rich held the public in contempt for their "commonness" but also felt obliged to "give." This is a charming study of this most charmed family.

      5 out of 5 stars TR Fan.......2007-09-06

Excellent, well written book! One of the better biography's of the late, great TR. A must read for all TR fan's.

5 out of 5 stars Bully for This Book!.......2007-09-01

This has to be one of the best biographies I have ever read. David Mccullough's storytelling draws you in, and gives you an intimate look at Teddy's pre-presidential days. The only negative is that it isn't long enough!

5 out of 5 stars How the last "renaissance man" president was created.......2007-07-15

I'll admit up front that I believe Teddy Roosevelt is my favorite president and certainly one of our greatest. He was probably one of the last "renaissance men" of our time; a successful politician, reformer, war hero, historian, naturalist, and rancher (ok, not too successful as a rancher).

But the beauty of Mornings On Horseback is that it adds another dimension to Roosevelt. Unlike many other books on the man, which focus on his accomplishments as a politician and leader, McCullough has used diaries and letters to paint a picture of the family side of TR. Not just a more developed picture of TR himself, but also of his family and the impact of their relationships on each other and on the future president himself.

If you're looking for a book about TR's accomplishments, this is not the book. However, if you're looking for a book that provides insights into how the great man was created Mornings on Horseback fills that need. McCullough notes that he ended his story after TR came back from the "badlands" and ran for mayor of New York. Although the TR story goes beyond that time, the author feels that the essential TR had been created by then, and McCullough's focus is on that story.

      Book Description

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMS

Winner of the 1982 National Book Award for Biography, Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as a masterpiece by Newsday, it is the story of a remarkable little boy -- seriously handicapped by recurrent and nearly fatal attacks of asthma -- and his struggle to manhood.

His father -- the first Theodore Roosevelt, "Greatheart," -- is a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. His mother -- Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt -- is a Southerner and celebrated beauty.

Mornings on Horseback spans seventeen years -- from 1869 when little "Teedie" is ten, to 1886 when he returns from the West a "real life cowboy" to pick up the pieces of a shattered life and begin anew, a grown man, whole in body and spirit.

This is a tale about family love and family loyalty...about courtship, childbirth and death, fathers and sons...about gutter politics and the tumultuous Republican Convention of 1884...about grizzly bears, grief and courage, and "blessed" mornings on horseback at Oyster Bay or beneath the limitless skies of the Badlands.

      2 out of 5 stars Expecting more..........2007-05-14

I was really expecting more TR info in this book... a little more than I needed to know about his family and acquaintances and not enough about the man himself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent writing about Theodore R. and his family.......2007-04-03

David McCullough's writing is superb. I have to admit I liked Thedore Roosevelt better as a person in Theodore Rex. His personal correspondence in this book reveals too much about his apparent enjoyment in killing animals for my taste. IMO his image as a conservationist is tarnished by the joy he took in killing. I was especially offended by his shooting the neighbor's dog when riding his horse. If I had lived back then and he shot my dog, I can safely say it would have been the last dog he ever shot and his departure from life would have been made slow and painful...

But that dislike of his joy of killing aside, he and his family were extraordinary. One cannot change history, so I go with the flow to learn more about it and the people in it...

4 out of 5 stars Review on Mornings on Horseback.......2007-03-25

This book is an excellent history material. For those who are studying or are just interested in American history, this a great secondary source that brings Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. to life. The style Mr. David McCullough uses is very easy to understand, and it is also very descriptive in nature which makes readers feel they were present at the scene. The only weakness is that the book limits T.R.'s life to a 19 year period, which happens before his greatest achievements. Basically, the author leaves you wanting more...
Great choice of biography, great author, and accessable price!

The two readers for this meticulously researched biography of Theodore Roosevelt add appeal, especially when reading the parts with the southern lady or Irish accents. Well done!

This memoir about a "boy possessed" reads like a cross between The Exorcist and David Sedaris's Me Talk Pretty One Day. Having been born into a Catholic household and eventually becoming an alter boy, Steve Kissing's childhood relationship with the Church was characterized by the usual bouts of reverence and guilt. Then one day, at the age of 11 years old, he suddenly started hallucinating and hearing a garbled voice in his head while sitting in his fifth-grade classroom. He managed to push the incident out of his mind until a few months later when the visions and voice returned during Sunday Mass. At this point, Kissing assumed it was the devil taking over his soul. After all, he was certainly a likely candidate, considering that he had recently shoplifted candy among other moral transgressions. From here the memoir takes on a hilarious and tragic storyline as we follow this poor possessed soul through his teenage years. When the devil possesses Kissing, he conjures up visions that are simultaneously bizarre and familiar—close friends suddenly look like Helen Reddy or Henry Kissinger, or even the Joker from the televisions show Batman.

All along he was afraid to tell anyone about his run-ins with Lucifer—-not even his parents knew. "I worried too that telling someone would only anger Satan and incite more trouble, sort of like telling a teacher that one of the eight graders is harassing you. It only seemed to make the bully all the more eager to catch you alone on the way home from school," he writes. "I was not about to be a Satan snitch." It would take five years of literal living hell (which he manages to describe with just the right amount of humor and heartbreak) before discvoering what in the hell was really going on. This is one of the most entertaining and twisted Catholic coming of age stories ever written. --Gail Hudson

4 out of 5 stars A 'wicked' sense of humour.......2003-11-14

A very honest and funny insight into the mind of an adolescent still caught partially in a childlike, literal understanding of the world, as he progresses to the more rational world of an adult. It's fascinating to see how the author's interpretation and understanding of his affliction are influenced by his environment, in this case his Catholic faith. A true life bildungsroman with both funny and poignant moments, this book has universal appeal. What resonated with me was seeing how our childlike interpretations so significantly effect our development (and no doubt continue to do so). One is left wondering whether this particular guy's crazy interpretations of events were such a bad thing for him after all. A really enjoyable read.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written and not very interesting.......2003-11-09

I ordered this book with high extectations. I heard the author interviewed on a local radio station and read the reviews on this website. It all seemed quite positive. I ordered a copy for myself and for members of my bookclub. Unfortunately, the book really is dreadful. I returned all copies to Amazon for a refund. This is the first time I've ever done that. There are two problems with the book. First, it is poorly written. You as the reader will have to work hard to get through it. Most sentences have a strange and painful construction. There is a beginning clause followed by a comma, then another clause elaborating on the first clause, then another comma with a third clause elaborating on either the first or the second clause. Get the idea. Do you want to read a whole book like this? Worse, what could have been an interesting story comes across as dull and lifeless. Clearly the writer thinks plopping down all these abbreviated ancedotes of people and things from his life will be very entertaining. Sadly, it reads as a rambling scattershot. Order the book and you will work hard to read it while asking yourself why you are spending your time doing it

      5 out of 5 stars Contemporary Classic.......2003-09-01

At first you don't think young Stevie Kissing is going to win. But somehow, in the strangest of adolescent maneuverings, he does. You must read this memoir to find out how. And you will rarely stop when you begin reading. In Running with the Devil, an older, wiser Steve Kissing looks back with brilliant narrative drive to a delusional childhood. He chronicles the unruly effects of not a lapsed Catholic childhood, but one that was given to inadvertant bouts of, well, hallucinations, bad dreams, and unreliable goals. And he captures in utter poignancy and hilarity what it means to feel ostracized and clearly puzzled by a strange affliction obsessing him.

It's this juggling act of emotions that occurs with the reader and in the prose that give this memoir the brilliant edge the best creative nonfiction offers. You often don't think young Steve Kissing is going to win, but he does, and once you start in - as I said before - you are not leaving his side as a reader who shadows every page with him.

5 out of 5 stars The struggle to keep one's sanity.......2003-06-21

Running From The Devil: A Memoir Of A Boy Possessed is the personal testimony of Steve Kissing, a Catholic school student who grew up during the 1970's with problematic seizures and a sure inner conviction that the Devil was striving for his soul. Instead of seeking help, Steve stayed silent out of fear, and Running From The Devil is the memorable story of his struggle to keep his sanity through hallucinations and the difficulties of growing up.

      5 out of 5 stars I Loved It........2003-06-21

I just finished reading Running From The Devil. I couldn't put it down. Steve writes about his experiences growing up and thinking he is possesed with the devil, in all actuality he is having seizures. This book was both sad and at the same time histerical. I can remember growing up the same era he did and doing some of dorky things that he did, but not with the demons that he experienced. I am a nurse at a seizure clinic and have heard similar stories to Steve's. I can hardly wait to share his stories/experiences with our patients and reassure them they are not the only ones who experience these weird episodes. I highy recommend this book to all who have seizures or know someone who has them. It really gives insight to what that person is experiencing.

This book is full of ideas for quilts that are a bit out of the ordinary and far from the traditional. The full color photos show the finished quilts which are a great inspiration. The varied projects included inside the pages give insight to many other crafting avenues as well as quilting. I own many quilt and craft books, but epspecially like the personal touch that these projects afford the quilter/crafter.

          4 out of 5 stars Printing on Fabric---Great Fun.......2004-11-28

I purchased this book, because I was looking for a hobby. Something to use my computer and still be crafty. I experimented briefly with Scrapbooking, but it didn't suit my personality, but this book seemed to. The major problem was the inability to locate the inkjet fixative in my local stores, but after going through the book, it told me how to buy the supplies online, which I did. I did a test project and it worked perfectly. I have not performed any of the projects listed in the book yet, but I've used the book as a guideline and have created my own projects. This is great fun, even though it stresses the HP Printer, it works equally well with my Canon Printer. You can buy inkjet printable fabric sheets in the stores, but I liked this because I am only limited by the printing size of my printer. I can use any fabric, not just the pre cut sizes.

          Book Description

Drs. Jon Carlson and Don Dinkmeyer, Sr. (deceased) first developed this systematic, practical model for building marriage skills in the early 1980s. Now Jon Carlson has brought this classic book up to date, and readers will once again have access to these invaluable tools to help make their marriages rewarding, effective, and satisfying. TIME FOR A BETTER MARRIAGE shows couples how to encourage each other, resolve conflict, communicate effectively, maintain equality in the marriage relationship, and make better choices. Packed with useful examples and exercises -- including communication exercises, "marriage meetings," self-evaluation questionnaires, planning charts, review questions, and lists of key "points to remember" -- TIME FOR A BETTER MARRIAGE is a self-contained skill-building course -- available in book form for every couple that wants a more satisfying and lasting intimate relationship.

Included in the book are dozens of practical, helpful exercises to help build skills in communication and conflict resolution; self-evaluation measures help readers stay on track toward their marriage goals. A special feature: twenty-four wallet-size "Daily Focus" and "Marriage Skills" cards are bound into the book, giving partners all-day-long access to the skill-building tools they're using to improve their marriages.

TIME FOR A BETTER MARRIAGE is a book for couples who want to enrich their relationships, for couples planning to be married, and for couples classes in churches, schools, community groups. Professionals who work with couples -- e.g., marriage and family therapists -- will find this a particularly valuable resource as a supplement to couples counseling.

Time for a Better Marriage: Training in Marriage Enrichment

Jon Carlson, PsyD. ABPP & Don Dinkmeyer,Sr. PhD. ABPP

          Impact Publishers (2003) 15.95

Our field is full of books on how to fix almost anything psychological. Most numerous are those which offer help with relationship and marital difficulties, ranging from the bent, the battered to the broken. They are presented by a series of authors, from the highly qualified and experienced, to those whose degrees suggest questionable origins. Still others rehash (probably without awareness by the authors, unfamiliar with the literature and earlier work in this area dating back over the last 65 years) old ideas as new and creative. Fortunately, the book we explore today was produced by two highly experienced and knowledgeable psychologists with a full awareness of the history and research in the marital field.

The present work is a re-release of an earlier effort by the authors. It is not presented as a revised edition, though a check of the referenced works indicate updating. Since I was unfamiliar with the original work, it was not possible for me to indicate new material.

The topics and contents of the book are solid, easy to read, easy to follow and replete with good examples, exercises, and guidelines that will serve both the educated and average couples as well. The work is moderately priced, well within the reach of those with modest incomes. For those who wish an enriched approach, the authors suggest a series of videotaped materials and additional self help books.

The contents of the first three chapters describe the basis for forming a solid relationship( understanding, encouragement). In chapters 4-7 the focus is on the importance of honesty, openness, appropriate choices and the development of effective communication. These chapters are pretty much the heart of the book, with ample examples, exercises and guidance for developing skill in this area. Chapters 8 and 9 provide guidance in dealing with and resolving conflict. The final chapter provides instruction on maintaining the gains from solving marital dilemmas.

As with many of Impact Publishers works, this volume is especially valuable to therapists who assign motivated clients homework and activities which extend into the other 167 hours of the week, following therapy sessions.

5 out of 5 stars Time for a Better Marriage.......2002-12-10

This is a must-read for all couples in a committed relationship who'd like to build a stronger, more satisfying marriage. Carlson and Dinkmeyer teach very practical, highly motivating techniques for initiating positive changes that will encourage your mate to respond in a more honest and meaningful way. This book isn't about slick or quick ways to get your partner to behave differently toward you. It's about learning to accept responsibility for your own behavior and realizing you have a choice in the direction your relationship takes.

Of course, this means actually making conscious choices about setting and achieving wise marital goals, which the authors acknowledge is tough for most couples. After all, our society is not exactly saturated with great role models for healthy marriages. It's also difficult, when you're angry at your spouse, to pull back and remember that you created the relationship you have now -- and you've got the power to change it. The key, say Carlson and Dinkmeyer, lies in understanding that the skills for a good marriage are learned. So you can start unlearning worthless habits and begin practicing new, more effective, positive ways of relating to each other right now.

As a hands-on tutorial this book is clear, comfortably paced, and interesting. It's packed with exercises designed to demonstrate the importance of learning to take risks and avoid ruts in your marriage; to focus on strengths and successes, back up each other's resources, and develop the courage to be imperfect; and above all to seek creative ways of resolving conflict. Best of all, like physical exercise you can incorporate into your daily routine, TIME FOR A BETTER MARRIAGE makes it easy to put a wealth of practical tips to immediate use every day. Carlson and Dinkmeyer are keenly aware of the value of being able to approach big changes in small strides. They advocate no daunting shifts in attitude or behavior, just countless simple ways of creating a healthier environment for your marriage. Activities like a Daily Dialogue, Encouragement and Marriage Meetings, developing a Marriage Mission Statement, keeping a journal, and evaluating your feelings on various issues help promote self-esteem, understanding, and mutual support.

This is a very "feeling-oriented" book that focuses on the message of emotions as the energy that powers communication. As anyone who's gotten mired in marital miscommunication knows, when you waste that energy in vague or misleading exchanges with your partner, you sabotage intimacy. Bottom line, there's no way to completely divorce-proof a marriage. But before you conclude you've picked the wrong mate, consider rediscovering your present mate by changing the only person you can change -- yourself. As Carlson and Dinkmeyer point out, the distinction between successful and unsuccessful marriages isn't in the challenges encountered. It's the choices couples make in meeting or avoiding those challenges that make all the difference. This book inspires the confidence to choose perceptively for a lasting relationship.

4 out of 5 stars Time for a Better Marriage.......2000-06-28

A well-written, concise help-manual designed for couples to improve their communication skills. The workbook is light-hearted yet packed with helpful hints, exercises and is easily integrated into any communication or marital enrichment seminar. Recommended reading the the marriage and family therapist!

This painter was an amazing combination of excellent artist, sarcastic and humorous person, and historian -- he painted what he saw - and each tells a story. This book helps guide you through it and points out things in his paintings that I would have missed.
