Book Description
It has been 200 years since their epic trek across Western America, yet Lewis and Clark still evoke strong emotions. For good or ill, the captains redefined America's sense of identity, and interest is at an all-time high in reexamining their expedition and its effects. Timed for publication amid the four-year bicentennial celebration of their journey, this book retraces the path taken by Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery from 1804 to 1806 and offers an uprecedented examination of the trail both as the explorers saw it and as it exists today. The author draw on the explorers' journals and period illustrations for historical context, and he complements this material with modern color photography from the roads and rivers along the trail blazed by Lewis Clark. Readers will also hear from history enthusiasts who are enamored by the explorers' feats as well as from those who view Lewis Clark as villains.

Great Book.......2004-07-27
Hannaford's book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in knowing how the President lived (and worked) away from the White House. The pictures were also excellent.
A highly recommended study of a beloved personal retreat.......2002-09-07
Ronald Reagan And His Ranch: The Western White House 1981-1989 is a solidly written, vividly presented, behind-the-scenes insider look at the ranch owned by the Reagans during Ronald Reagan's tenure as President of the United States and which came to be nicknamed by the press as the "Western White House". From the security difficulties the ranch posed for the secret service, to humorous anecdotes, to visits by famous and powerful people, and enhanced with black-and-white as well as color photographs, Ronald Reagan And His Ranch is a unique contribution to school and community library American History, and a highly recommended study of the beloved personal retreat of one of America's most popular 20th Century presidents.

The greatest person ever lived .......2005-11-20
i really loved this book if i was born around his time i would have been his friend i love how he stood up for his beliefs and went back to school in stuff even though he didn't get to gradulate, but he still lived a great in fun life it was short but he did things with it i'm young but my aunt past away with AIDS and after reading this book it really touch me i was crying because i felt so bad what ryan went though but he didn't let it get to him. He was so strong he got people believing again.
Intrest in school.......2005-10-06
In fifth grade we were introduced to an illness called AIDS. We also learned about a boy named Ryan White. I took an interest to this story because I have an illness called diabetes and have to deal with how different people react and treat me because of it. Just like Ryan and AIDS diabetes is not contagious and there are no know ways to prevent or cure it. I have heard many different reactions when they find out that I have Diabetes. The most commom being "Did you eat too much sugar or something?" Most of the time I just laugh at this and explain that you have no control over getting Diabetes. I took an interest in school that year and by doing so I found myself a role model...Ryan White.
Inspiring with a tear jerker end..........2005-09-10
When I was young I remeber a copy of People magazine that my mom had lying around with Ryan White on the cover. For some reason I always took an interest to him, and his life, and all the article that I could find on him. In high school I remeber reading part of it to do an exta credit project. Finally 2 year out of high school I decided to reread the story of his life. It is amazing how people really are. It really hit home, not living too far from Kokomo, Indiana where he was from, that people in my community would treat people this way. It is also amazing how much determination he had to be who he was and not let anyone or anything get in the way. This book is great!!!! Everyone should read it and put themselves in this families shoes!!
Inspiring.......2004-12-04
I read this book upon entering seventh grade. Ryan's story was so empowering and so honest that I often feel the need just to sit down and read a chapter by random. Everytime I read it I cry. This auto- biography has inspired me to help in the relief and research for AIDS. I have done reports on the disease and Ryan and teachers often comment about how passionate I am about the subject. This book changed the way I veiw life; a treasure that should'nt be wasted. Thank you Ryan.
Touching and simply inspiring.......2004-06-25
Ryan White was born with hemophilia, which means that his blood does not clot the way it is supposed to. Fortunately, there was a new product, Factor VIII, which contained the clotting agents found in blood.
After Ryan took Factor VII repeatedly, he started to get severely sick. His mother brought him to a doctor and found out that he had contracted AIDS through the tainted blood products that he had been given for his hemophilia. He was only thirteen.
He was denied the right to return to school to study as the people of his hometown, Kokomo, did not approve of his disease. He went to court and fought for his right to return to his school. Ryan won the case eventually, but many parents withdrew their children from the school in fear of Ryan's disease.
Although Ryan could return to his studies, the children at his school taunted him and vandalized his locker with vulgarities. Ryan's house was vandalized too; bullets were fired into his house, rocks and bricks were hurled, and people thrashed the White's backyard.
Ryan and his family had enough of it. They moved from Kokomo to Cicero, Indianapolis. With great courage, Ryan began to speak out against the misconceptions about AIDS and called for AIDS sufferers to be treated with equality and compassion. He was very welcomed in his new hometown and was invited by many schools and countries across the country to give talks.
Ryan's last and final trip before he died was to Washington D.C, to take a photo with President Regan and his wife, but the very first thing he did when he arrived was to attend the Home Show with Howie Long.
However, during the next day, April 8 1990, Ryan was admitted to the hospital as he was having trouble breathing. Some visitors, including Elton John, came to visit Ryan. Ryan's mother stepped out to greet them as they arrived. Once they were back into the room, they saw doctors huddled around Ryan and his bed. Ryan was then rushed to the intensive care unit.
Once there, Ryan's doctors laid out the situation for Ryan and his mother; Ryan knew that once he was knocked out me would never wake up again, but he told the doctor to go on with the plans. Ryan told his mother that he was tired of fighting AIDS, then the drugs took effect, and the world lost a wonderful person.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. It is suitable for all ages. It is both heart warming, hopeful, spirited and heart breaking at the same time because it is a true story about people fighting for what they believe in. This true and powerful story about Ryan White will make you think twice about life because it tells you that you can be alive and well one day but you might be gone the next.

BAD BOOK.......2003-03-18
Do NOT buy this book if you care about your rats. This author has no idea what she's talking about. Debbie's books are much more informative.
Very Poorly Researched.......1999-03-07
This book made me very unhappy. The author must not have any pet rats, or her rats would be dead and she would now know NEVER to use wood shavings in their cages. The only wood shavings suitable for rats is aspen, but CareFresh or products made of recylved and sterlized newspapers are best. This along with a lot of other misinformation can kill your pet rat. To learn the truth about pet rats and how to care for them click on Debbie Ducommen's book at the top of the page.

Great Intro to the Commercial Greenhouse Industry.......2002-07-10
If anyone out there is curious about how commercial greenhouses operate, this book is it! It was suggested to me by someone in a professional gardening web forum.
I was looking for a book that would show me how the big boys do it. Heating, Cooling, Media, Fertilizer, etc.. It was like I got a tour of some of the top greenhouses in the world and had someone take notes! And at 800 pages, this is a bargain considering all the info in it. And I love all the tables, charts, and formulas. I will be able to use these as I start my own commercial greenhouse.
The 2nd half of the book is dedicated to 137 different crops, and how to grow each in a greenhouse environment.

Building on the success of his guide to raising healthy young boys (The Wonder of Boys, Michael Gurian has written the next chapter--a book focusing on the much-maligned adolescent male. Gurian asserts, "We do not understand adolescent-male development, and therefore are unable to give our adolescent males the kind of love they need to become fully responsible, loving, and wise men." Adolescent boys may appear to be self-sufficient, but Gurian asserts that they actually need their parents and elders desperately. The author carefully illustrates what we--as parents, mentors, and educators--need to know about male adolescents, and what we can do to aid them on their journey to adulthood.
In the face of many sociologists and scholars who strongly declare the contrary, Gurian claims a biological basis for many male behavioral traits. In A Fine Young Man, he employs convincing data from scientific studies on neurological development to assert that female and male brains have significant differences, and that testosterone plays an important role in male development and behavior.
But A Fine Young Man offers far more than theory. Gurian's arguments are firmly rooted in reality, and he offers specific suggestions for typical family dilemmas. He breaks down the stages of development into preadolescence, early, middle, and late adolescence; discusses education and the role of the media; and suggests ways to keep aggression (caused in part by the testosterone flooding the adolescent male brain) from becoming violence. In a social sense, Gurian says, adolescent boys are our most undernourished population, and A Fine Young Man encapsulates his hope that our neglected young men receive the nurturing they need. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
The author explores the unseen problems and marvels of maile adolescents, showing parents, teachers, and mentors how to shepherd boys through the challenging ages of ten to twenty.

A tool that parents, teachers, and community members can utalize.......2006-12-12
This book was written not only for youth but as a tool that parents, teachers, and community members can use to engage in the difficult task of guiding youth, especially young men. The author states that "Adolescent boys may appear to be self-sufficient, but they actually need their parents and elders desperately." This profound statement by the author summarizes the book in the fact that without mentor's youth can not survive. Besides providing information for family and community members the book also addresses many male behavior traits by describing biological reasons behind them. Scientific studies conducted on neurological development have asserted that female and make brains have significant differences. Within males testosterone plays a much more profound role in male development and behavior which sheds some light into the aggressive actions of male youth. However, the author doesn't simply focus on neurological development as a means to scapegoat the fact that males tend to be more aggressive then females thus their behavior should be excused, but rather suggest that this theory might explain in more depth the reasoning behind typical family dilemmas.
The book outlines ways that parents, mentors, and community members can keep aggression from becoming violence, such as focusing on education and how the media effects aggression in young men through development from preadolescence to late adolescence. The author states that adolescent boys are society's most undernourished population in regards to mentoring and that focusing a little bit of time and effort is going to pay of immensely for these young men and how they ultimately affect society.
This book was clearly written for individuals who want to broaden their knowledge surrounding at risk male youth. It has clear goals which are outlined throughout the book and it provided a solid basis for understanding what needs to be done in ones home, community, and elsewhere to aid in the development of at risk youth.
Even though at times I did not agree with the physiological causes for assertive male behavior I was able to understand that extensive research within this area has been completed and this book is based on that research. Although the neurological development of males is drastically different then females, I believe that it does not excuse aggressive behavior. Overall I thought this book was well written and had some excellent alternative view points. I would definitely recommend it to another mentor.
Makes Boys Sound Like Wreckless Hormone Driven Monsters,.......2005-01-17
Basically to make a long story short he gives boys
*bunk" all the traits of monstes which have to be controlled by
channeling boys even further into this behavior by saying it's
"normal".In REAL life there are plenty of quiet, well mannered
boys and sex crazed rocus girls. This book has nothing to do with
reality, and is based on Gurian's subjective beliefs about
boys or as he puts it "male brains".Brains are brains and they
vary from person to person, once more he doesn't seem to understand their is more to a ^BEING^ than mere biology.
People can teach their children, both boys and girls that they
have self controll and will to succeed. Both girls as well as
boys need information which will lead them toward success in
life, not just boys.Much weight to succeed is put on boys in
his realm. This ideal of 'masculine' *gag* perfection is not good for boys, because it's a ONE SIZE FITS ALL type of
mentality.
What he's doing to kids and also adults is criminal.
A Clinical Psychologist's View.......2002-04-06
I find Gurian's cross-cultural perspective fascinating, and he does a better job in this book than in "The Wonder of Boys" of suggesting actions that can be taken and changes that can be made to help our young men. As a mentor and a clinical psychologist who works with children and their families, I see far too many boys trying to figure out how to become men with little or no input from men. Growing up just happens as boys grow older, but maturing is another matter; maturing or developing into adulthood requires guidance and/or examples to follow. Mothers do all they can, but boys need men they respect who will teach them how to become men, or at least lead by example. This is highly recommended for mentors, educators, and parents.
Good but left me longing for more.......2001-07-21
I have 2 boys 12 and 14. I hunger for books on this subject. I liked this book better than others. I chaff at the sterotypes necessary in this sort of book although Gurian handled this issue gracefully. The book is dense on theory and philosophy and more articulate and complete and thought provoking than most. I liked his list of characteristics and attributes of the fine young man. The sections on practical hints, while much more complete than most other books on the subject could certainly bear some fleshing out especially for parents who not are well connected with adequate male models. It made me grateful I have a great husband and a circle of good friends.
A practical book substantiated through scientific research.......2000-08-17
One of the best features of this book is the fact that Michael Gurian. having lived in other cultures, researches his material through the scientific process aas well as by investigating other cultures in how they relate to boys. In so doing Gurian discovers some common elements and some differences. Some of these differences are surprising and offer our own culture something to thnink about. It is hard to focus on what is good about this book because one would have to summarize all its chapters. Perhaps a strong element of "A Fine Young Man" is the structure of those chapters. Guriam presents the thesis of the chapter. He presents cross-cultural references, scientific reseach and personal histories. He then offers some practical "how-to's". For those of us who work with boys, especially adolescents, this practical aspect is quite important. While Gurian's style makes this "easy" reading, one finds oneself pausing numerous times and talking to oneself about what one has just read. Gurian inspires the reader to bring "his" own life to the process. I thought this book would be a releif from the spiritual and theological reading I have been doing. Yet I found myself reflecting frequently on Gurian's insights, the implications of the research he discovered and the stories he presents. I found myself journaling about these times.
This book has solid practical value, but it also has a deep spiritual challenge to those of us to want to help our young men grow into healthy and faithful adults.

De Chirico And America
ASIN: 3791327941 |
Book Description
Giorgio de Chirico's idiosyncratic symbolic style had a powerful influence on 20th-century art, and in particular on Surrealism. His strange dreamscapes, featuring classical statues, Italian piazzas, sinister shadows, geometric objects, and mannequins are filled with enigma. This richly illustrated book focuses on the artist's mysterious and fascinating representations of the human form and describes how events and friendships in his life influenced his artistic development.
At a young age de Chirico was deeply impressed by Arnold Boecklin's painting of Odysseus on the island of Calypso. De Chiroco appropriated Boecklin's Odysseus for his own paintings, at first with little modification, then pushing it ever further into the background until it appeared only as a shadow. The author explains how the figure underwent numerous additional alterations in later paintings before returning to centerstage as the famous "manichino" figure, the faceless tailor's dummy.

Book Description
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was not only a major Irish poet, but also a playwright, theater founder, politician, and literary critic. In his early life, he immersed himself in Irish folk stories and mythology, which he would later weave so skillfully into his major poems and plays. He devoted himself to occult studies and philosophy, and he found dignity and significance in the land, people, and history of his native Ireland. He was largely responsible for the Irish literary renaissance, for he encouraged his contemporaries to turn to the Irish past for their literary material. His works have generated volumes of critical commentary, and interest in his tremendous cultural contribution continues to grow. This reference book is a comprehensive guide to his life and work, and to the large body of scholarship that has been written about him. The book begins with a chronology that presents the chief events of Yeats' life in capsule form. The volume then provides more than 1000 alphabetically arranged entries on Yeats' publications, fictional characters, mythological figures, places with which Yeats was associated, organizations to which he belonged, and the many historical persons whom he either knew or whom he mentioned in his many writings. Most entries include lists of works for further reading, and the volume concludes with a selected, general bibliography of primary and secondary sources.
