This book is enchanting, wonderful, and beyond description, except to say it is a testament to the human spirit.

If you read this and loved it, also look at "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," by Jean-Dominique Bauby. If you can't imagine living on your back for ten years, try imagining writing a book using only the ability to blink one eye, to dictate letter by letter. Tis book is another testament to the human spirit.

This book is amazing, I am 15 and I read it, my mother at 39 read it, my grandma read it and my younger sister at 13 read it. Everyone takes away some different, but something wonderful from this book. It is absolutely indescribable, you have to read it; right now, order it, read it, it will change your outlook on life.

My husband gave this book to me and I am truly enjoying it! Katharine sees things from a rare perspective. Her life transformed her into someone that could see deep into even the most mundane subjects. I feel a new appreciation for even the sounds of crickets! She was certainly a person who's cup was always half full! This book is like welcome raindrops, enveloping you and staying with you long after the drops have evaporated!

This book is astounding-- I keep wondering why no one ever told me about it before. Why did I find it on the dusty independent table in the back of bookstore? It is rare and beautiful. Butler-Hathaway's insight, uniquely sensual perspective, enthusiasm, and empathy are lovely. Order it.

Nice Origami book........2007-01-11

Lang's book on Origami is a good buy for anyone interested in this ancient art of paper folding. It covers models that are simple to fold all the way to models that require more skill. It also includes quite a large variety of animals to explore.

A great book full of variety!!.......2006-08-04

This is the first origami book I have bought,Origami Zoo. Before I got this book I had to print heaps of stuff off the internet, and before long I had a huge collection of stuff I put in a folder. I soon found out that all the models I had printed out were way too hard for me, even though I'm around the intermediate to advanced level!! As cool as they may sound, the Biplane always confused me, the Bee always ripped and the Alien always became too small and thick.
But then I discovered Amazon.com. Here there were millions of choices of origami books, but I chose to get "Origami Zoo, an Amazing Collection of folded paper animals." This book was at my level exactly!!
My fav models are, so far:
- The Penguin. Even though this is one of the easiest, it still looks lifelike side-on.
- The Owl. This model is also 2D, but it perches on a thin rod, and looks lifelike as well.
- The Duck. This model is a particularly cute 3D one!
- The Sea Turtle. This model is both fun to make and cool to look at!!
- The Fox. This model is rather easy, 3D, and lifelike!
None of the models in this book are very easy. Most of them are at the intermediate level, but the last 10 or so models are complex. I still haven't gotten to the real complex models yet, but when I do, I hope I have a lot of large origami paper on hand!!
This book contains info at the start, about folds, paper, designing models and so on.
I would recommend this book to people who like to make a variety of animals, not just plain four legged animals, but insects and sea creatures as well!!

Lots of animals - Intermediate to Advanced.......2005-08-21

There is a great selection of animals to make in this book. Some are very advanced and complicated. Others are easier and more familiar. If you are a beginner, but are familiar with folds and instructions, it is worth giving it a try for a challenge.

Absolute excellence... Don't Miss!.......2003-07-02

Even though the final models are *extremely* complex, the book begins with very interesting texts about origami origins, evolution and approaches to creation; and the models go in progression from the very simplest ones. So actually this is an excellent "transition" book - if you have some experience with origami and have the ambition to try more complex stuff, there cannot be a better book than this one to guide you. The diagrams are crystal clear, and so are the indications. I got this book when I was 11 (I'm 24 now), and it is still every bit as amazing an enjoyable as back then!!

ABSOLUTELY Awesome...but CHALLENGING!!!!.......2003-04-19

Origami Zoo is yet another book my boys and I got from our local library. This book is by two of the BEST Origamists around, in our humble opinion.
We will be watching for it on ebay. While we are all beginner/intermediate folders, we are AMAZED by this book. There is nothing in it we don't like, but only a couple so far we've been able to figure out. It is WELL written. All the basic folds one needs, are clearly shown and explained at the front. While it has black and white illustrations, they are fairly easy to follow, and the written instructions are very good, IF you already know something about Origami. There are very nice & clear pictures at the beginning of each model, to show you how it looks, finished. I like that.
If you are intermediate to advanced, I would say this book will keep you busy for MONTHS, maybe years.
FUN, EXCITING, "CHALLENGING" ! I can't wait to get past the cool Dolphin, which I got pretty quick. If you are just starting out, don't be like us, find an easier book to begin with. Highly recommended!!

Disappointing.......2002-12-29

Fine layout and photographs, but I found this book oddly uninteresting to read.

There are better books out there covering the same ground. One book I like, less exhaustive but more interesting to read, is "100 Easy to Grow Native Plants." If you want something more exhaustive, Cullina's two books on Wildflowers and Shrubs are IMO the best native plant guides on the market.

Mr. Burell oragnizes and expalins beautifully.......2002-09-05

Mr. Burrell has been providing useful information on gardening with native plants for
a while now - through his books and columns in magazines like "Fine Gardening."
I am never disappointed when I read his material, and this books fits with the rest.
It's a wonderfully helpful starter's guide to native plants, particularly for east coast
and midwest gardeners.

Excellent context and detail.......2000-02-26

C Colston Burrell seems to be a genuinely professional gardening writer, having written a general perennials book for Rodale too. I'm thoroughly impressed with this book, which does a very good job of placing species in both natural and garden contexts. It also gives adequate treatment to the basics of native garden care in some introductory chapters.

A Gardener's Ency of Wildflowers is not a comprehensive reference; I haven't seen anything I'd call a definitive reference out there on native gardening. Intelligently, Burrell chooses to provide very complete descriptions of a representative sampling of 150-some native plants. In side bars, he sends up other species in slightly less detail, contrasting them with the full description he started from. The format works well. Native gardening is still at the point where you need to do a fair amount of poking around yourself to know what's appropriate to your area and your garden, and this book is a perfect starting point for that process.

The other positive here for me personally was that Burrell is a Minneapolis author. I happen to also be in zone four, and really appreciated the fact that the book had a very healthy complement of species that are happy in northern gardens.

The one absence I noticed was any detailed description of propagating each species. Good nursery catalogs -- Prairie Moon's being one -- include information on when to plant each type of seed, how long to cold stratify it, and so on. Here you get more of a basic description of how fall planting works, in an introductory chapter mostly. After a couple of years with my own garden, I can tell you that isn't quite enough to go by.

Excellent source for those interested in wild flowers.......1998-09-24

Burrell, with his Gardener's Encyclopedia of Wildflowers, has filled an invaluable gap in the literature. Books on wild flowers are widely available, but few offer definitive details on the growing and cultivation of these precious, often endangered, plants. In addition to its stunning illustrations and workable garden designs Gardener's Encyclopedia adds sources for seeds and plants throughout the coountry. It also includes a reading list and an excellent glossary. Altogether an important addition to the gardener's library.

The book was smaller than I had expected, and it focused more on the rural traditions than on the ones that most Irish people actually follow. My Irish parents found it more amusing than helpful. Otherwise, the book was in perfect physical condition and as described.

This book is chocked-full of Irish traditions, superstions, and folklore! I am "a little bit" Irish and therefore may use a few suggestions in my own wedding. The only down-side in using this book is that there are few practical suggestions on how to incorporate the information into your wedding, so you have to use your imagination. I found it an interesting read, though overall.

This is truly one of the most well-written and all-inclusive books on the topic of Irish weddings. (And I've seen most of them!) When my wife and I first discussed the idea of an Irish wedding, I must admit I expected green beer and kissing of blarney stones. I really didn't expect to have any input or interest in the plans at all. My wife's purchase of this book, while not making me an expert on celtic traditions, has given me a new vantage of the elegant and classic themes present in Irish ceremonies. This beautiful book has maintained its place at the top of our collection, and will remain there for years to come--both as a reminder of our ceremony and as an aesthetically attractive addition to our coffee table.
