Essential for informed travel.......2000-04-30
This beautiful and informative book (one of a series) is valuable for the armchair traveler as well as the actual tourist. History, photographs, simple and elegant maps, as well as interesting tidbits about people and places. For traveling with kids, it's invaluable. No threat of museumitis, here; lots of outdoors destinations to explore. The authors never preach, yet show convincingly that much is available - for family travel as well as adults - beyond multiplexes and outlet malls. They offer interesting and often "hidden" diversions and historically important places to visit: monuments, parks, houses, and more. It's produced lushly, to be enjoyed and admired - and it succeeds.

Book Description
The lives of this remarkable couple unfold alongside events of the Revolutionary War era, a time in which John left his family for prolonged periods to serve his colony and country. Their engaging exchanges follow John's career from provincial lawyer and farmer in Braintree, Massachusetts, to delegate to the Continental Congresses in Philadelphia, to diplomatic success in Europe. John reveals himself as an ambitious, determined, and self-doubting statesman with a trusting, deeply affectionate character and an earthy sense of humor.
Abigail's lively and captivating letters show the trials of an intelligent, strong, and resourceful woman who managed the family's farm and business affairs and reared the pair's four children during her husband's long absences. Her missives to John are filled with outspoken remarks on politics, public figures, and world-shaking events. An independent thinker and advocate of equal rights for women, she urged him in one spirited letter to "Remember the Ladies" in framing the new government. Abigail also vividly documents domestic life in eighteenth-century America, providing enlightening details on health problems, childbirth, education, women's activities, the difficulties of travel, and the impact of wartime inflation.
The 226 letters contained in this volume are supplemented with a few to third parties and a sampling of diary entries. Altogether, the words and thoughts of these warm, if occasionally fallible, human beings richly convey the experience of the Revolutionary generation in a most personal and authentic way.

Good History Book.......2001-04-15
This was a very interesting book showing the way a women saw the start of a new country. It also shows the sacrifice that both John and Abigail both had to make to still be together while John was helping the colonies. John tells Abigail all of the political happenings that have been going on not including deaths etc... Abigail is very much into politics and reminds John to "remember the ladies" when writing the Declaration of Independence. This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn more about the war at a different perspective than what just the history books say.
Book Description
Now a Hallmark Hall of Fame TV-movie starring Kathy Bates, Elizabeth Perkins, and Lynn Redgrave.
When Margaret Moorman's older sister, Sally, was first hospitalized with schizophrenia in 1959, her family denied the truth to neighbors, friends-and even themselves. Not until thirty years later, when their mother's death made her Sally's sole caretaker, did Margaret face the truth. In this poignant memoir, she tells the brave story of her struggle to come to grips with the legacy of her sister's devastating disease, its effect on her own life and on her entire family. Candid, moving, and ultimately healing, My Sister's Keeper is a heartwarming story about two sisters and their love for one another.

Honest and painful.......2006-01-26
I read this book coming from the outlook of being a mom of a schizophrenic 14-year-old daughter. By the time I finished the book, I was sorry I read it. Although it was a brutally frank and honest account, Ms. Moorman not sugar-coating her feelings for her sister and making it into some kind of overcomer's tale with a happy ending, I found myself mired in sadness through the course of the story. There were so few hopeful moments that I found myself wondering why she wrote it in the first place, and how would this book give comfort or hope to other siblings of the mentally ill?
I had to continually remind myself that for a young person in this day and age dealing with any kind of mental illness, there are so many more effective therapies and medications available with a greater chance of improving their quality of life. Sally seemed to go for so many long stretches without being medicated that I don't know how she did as well as she did (which wasn't that great most of the time).
This book did leave me with a goal of working on bringing my ill daughter closer to her younger brother and sister.
Anyone who has a difficult family member will understand..........2004-05-15
This true-story book tells of a woman's experiences in dealing with a sister with bipolar disorder. Throughout her life, her sister's illness has impacted her own life in a variety of ways, and after the mother dies and she is the only one responsible for her sister, the situation intensifies. While on medication, the bipolar sister can function reasonably well, but she goes off meds from time to time and then the sister eventually has a mess to sort out.
The ambivalence of the relationship (the two sisters both love and resent each other) is perfectly captured in this book. It rings true. Although there was sufficient money left by the mother and social services available to assist, so that this was not the "worst case" scenario that some families experience, still, the family-wide devastation of mental illness was well captured in this book.
I couldn't put it down.

Book Description
TOMOKO FUSE is recognized at home and abroad as one of the most original and exciting of all up-and-coming origami talents. In this book, she explains her method for combining folded-paper units in an insertion fashion that results in an endless sequence of multidimensional variations giving
new life and freshness to old-fashioned origami classics. Another dynamic departure is the way she employs a single origami work as an axis around which to assemble various other multidimensional parts.
Hours of fascinating fun await the origami devotee who follows her along the path to creating original multidimensional forms that are practically architectural in nature. Ranging from technically simple folds to more demanding ones, the many delightful and varied works in this book are highly
stimulating and make wonderful presents for family and friends.
Customer Reviews:
For those interested in furthering your exploration of origami..........2007-04-28
I appreciate Tomoko Fuse's work because her designs are simple, yet elegant, and they are very clearly explained and diagrammed. She approaches her subject in such a manner than she manages to demystify it so that the reader isn't too intimidated to attempt a project. Hers is the first name I turn to when I'm ready to move on to other techniques, designs, or styles. This book was no different in that regard. It is, as the name implies, instruction on creating multiple UNITS that will then be assembled into different shapes and designs. For that reason, I would say it is defintely for a dedicated enthusiast, as it definitely takes some patience to connect some of these units in a way that will leave the final model smooth and unblemished. However, this is the case with any modular or unit style origami, and not specific to Tomoko's work. If anything, she manages to take some of the mystery out of it in the process and even include encouragement where necessary. I enjoyed her little snippets of insight into her method and approach, as well as her deep admiration and reverence for the craft in general, which comes through in these writings. I fold paper because it gives me a sense of peace and satisfaction through accomplishment. Each new project is a tiny little victory when completed, and works as well for me as meditation. These many different units and connecting them in fun and different ways is certainly fulfilling for those who have that constant inner urge to fold, and then not knowing what to do with tons of cranes, birds, and boxes, etc., that you've created. I just fold different kinds of units over and over, then when I'm ready, I can attempt to connect them later on. There are enough different units and ways to connect them that I am stimulated for hours on end with no end in sight yet. If you are just beginning to fold, I would hold off on this book until you get used to something simpler, like her book "Origami Boxes."
Not for beginners or those with casual interest.......2007-03-17
Tomoko Fuse is one of the best known names in origami, and modular forms seems to be the hottest current area. She takes her work seriously, she states, always trying to create the most perfect folds. I am a beginner with a casual interest in moderately complex figures, so this book is way above my interest, commitment and skill level. The large number of black-and-white photos and diagrams also index this as a book for the serious origami hobbyist.
ok i geuss.......2005-08-31
looks good sounds good read well but ive seen better, i do recommend to the high commited
Still my favorite Origami Book!.......2005-06-12
I have had this book for about 5-6 years now and IT'S A MESS! By that I mean, dog-eared, folded, written in, you get the idea. This is absolutely my favorite of the many origami books I have. It introduced me to modular origami back when I was just making boxes and cranes. The instructions are excellent and I have made so many models for gifts, decorations, you name it! Fuse's models decorate my bookshelf and have delighted many of my friends and family members. This book is definitely for more experienced folders, however I do have a friend that borrowed the book and had never done origami before, and he used some of Fuse's methods to build an amazing bridge of his own creation. You can use the methods to create models in the book as well as your own pieces of art. I HIGHLY recommend this book and any other written by Tomoko Fuse.
Excellent, although unit origami can get boring.......2005-01-17
This is an excellent book full of highly original designs. My personal belief, though, is that unit origami can get boring since you have to fold the same unit over and over again.

Move over, Martha Stewart! Bubba's in the garden with the sweet potatoes and the tire beds. Rufus T. Firefly gives away all his family secrets in this humorous gardening guide. He tells you why old carpeting makes great mulch, how to fight the bugs with cigarette butts, and how to grow a pickle-in-a-bottle. There are some actual great gardening tips peeking out of the redneck humor. (For example, eggplants and peppers need sulfur to grow well, so stick half-a-dozen unburnt matches head-down in the soil next to your plants.) Save me some of them tractor-tire tomatoes, you hear?
Customer Reviews:
Get the Low-down before you put your Hoe down........2000-03-07
Half gardening how-to, half humor, "White Trash Gardening" is guaranteed to raise a few eyebrows along with lots of other plants. It's not for your great-Aunty Matilda, who gets the vapors when things get a little off color -- but everyone else, gardener or not, should love it. I first read the book about three years ago when I was working full time at a newspaper. It was so hilarious that I went around the newsroom quoting from its pages -- and had everyone cracking up. Benton is as funny as Dave Berry, only with a down-home Southern-fried sense of humor. And a green thumb. The book is actually supposed to be "written" by Benton's alter-ego, one "Rufus Thiabeaux Firefly," who is from Arkansas and supposedly a distant cousin of everyone in the state, including a certain president. Rufus, like his (in)famous kinsman occupying the White House, is not the sort Martha Stewart would like at her garden parties. To put it mildly. He's more like the American version of Hyacinth's brother-in-law Onslow in the PBS series "Keeping Up Appearances" -- as common as mud, in other words. Rufus tells you what kind of vines are good for covering up your rusty trailer, and which kind make good ground cover. Not wanting to spend lots of dough on his landscaping, he doesn't advocate grassy lawns. Ground cover, therefore, cuts out the mowing, watering and most work. For "high falutin' people," ivy makes a good ground cover; Firefly's own ground cover, however, is a '64 Chevy Impala on cinder blocks. You don't need a rototiller to prepare your garden. According to Rufus, just tell the neighborhood kids your garden plot is an Indian burial ground and they can have all the arrowheads they dig up. Two ideas for potted plants in your living room: either some ivy or your teenaged son -- you'll get about the same level of conversation from them both. And when you're trying to classify your plants, Rufus's aunt categorizes them as perinnel, annual and bisexual. Rufus says no gardening tasks should take any longer to finish than a six-pack of beer. Now, the book really does have some good gardening tips in between its jokes. And some history behind them all: in less prosperous times a century or so ago, the "po' white trash" truck farmers had to raise vegetables and crops, making sure they got maxium yield with a minimum of money. That was the only way they survived. So they came up with some ingenious methods that really work. These tips were handed down from one generation to the next, but prior to Benton's book, seldom if ever written down. Now that everyone's leaving the farm and getting citified, these methods may be lost forever if not for books like "White Trash Gardening." You'll want a copy for yourself this gardening season, but buy several. They make great gifts and are guaranteed to have Yankees and Southerners alike doubling over in laughter.

One of the Good Ones..........2006-01-12
I have a couple of bookshelves in my home dedicated to homemaking and organization books, this is one that gets pulled out and skimmed over on a pretty regular basis.
I like that I can just flip around and find good reminders and quotes just about every page I end up on.
I like her "tone" -- meaning there are some books out there with an annoying tone (i.e., the kind that sound too bossy and haughty, and then the kind that you feel like they are speaking to a toddler or puppy: "good girl! you can do it!" - blech...).
Just an overall good book. I don't give it 5 stars b/c I reserve that rating for those I consider the absolute best.
Decent book but there might be better.......2005-12-22
This is a pretty decent book. What confuses me is why this author has so many books out that seem to be variations of the same thing. I happened to pick up this particular one but I'm not sure why she has authored so many different ones that seem to be all the same topic. This book is pretty jam packed with lots of great ideas on how to be organized. Of course it's full of pretty much the same stuff other books are full of too. That's because when it comes to being an organized mom much of this information is going to be the same no matter what book you read. If you are looking for something really simplified and very hands on with exact steps on what to do then I prefer Sink Reflections by Marla Cilley. If you are already a pretty organized person then this is going to be a nice addition to your library. If you are already overwhelmed then this will probably just be another book to fill your shelf.
A good start for the organizationally challenged.......2003-07-03
I am organizationally challenged. I admit this. My home is an explosion of toys, cracker crumbs, laundry and paperwork. Our bills are regularly late because we can't find them or worse forget about them. I would like to say this book re-invented my life, I have to be realistic though. After almost 30 years of disorganization nothing will change over night. The author does offer some very practical simple solutions that I was able to implement with almost no effort. This was great for us. I created an organization system and rearranged a few items of furniture to find that I could use the space and things I already owned to my advantage. I try to look through the book weekly to find something new I can add to our routine to see what we can do to improve things. If you are just starting out with organization or you are to the point I was where you were ready to explode this is an excellent resource.
You may be the boss, but are you the Family Manager?.......2003-05-20
It's so easy to feel like we stay-at-home moms do so little in the world. Everyone else has titles at their job: "assistant product developer", "marketing coordinator", "research and design engineer". We're simply "Mom". And often as we sit around in our jeans with banana mash stuck on them juggling a baby and figuring out when we need to leave to pick up our older ones from school, we wonder whether we're really that important.
Kathy Peel helps us in two ways: first, she encourages us that what we do truly is important. In fact, it's the most important job there is! And if we're going to do it right, it requires some organization.
The Family Manager doesn't just teach us how to organize our homes, it helps us make sure that the main priorities don't get lost in the shuffle of driving to gymnastics, to Boy Scouts, and the grocery store. She reminds us to plan family activities, to make everyone feel special, and to take time just to enjoy each other. And to keep stress to a minimum, she reminds us to do the "preventative maintenance" in all areas of our lives, so that we don't have to spend precious time putting out fires.
When I wrote To Love, Honor and Vacuum, I didn't repeat what Kathy Peel did, because she did such a good job. I focused on how to change our relationships so that we don't feel so taken for granted, but I recommended that everyone also read The Family Manager to learn how to do that housework quickly, efficiently, and to everyone's benefit.
If you're down in the duldrums and feeling like you're running off your feet, this book will help you to remember that you are important and that you can make a difference.
Full of Information, Repeat of much information.......2001-10-23
First the positive:
This book is full of useful information to help you in organizing your home, your time, your life and more. There are many hints and techniques as well as a encouragement. If you are just starting down the road to organizing, this is a good book to begin with.
However, if you already have a fairly well run family and need to fine tune your organizing this is not the book to get.
Much of this can be read in any women's magazine in any given month. Many of the ideas are very simplistic (not that this is all bad).
Overall, I'd say that there are other better books out there that deal with organizing a home. I prefer Confessions of a Happily Organized Family or others by the same author.

Henry Ossawa Tanner: American Artist (Negro American Biographies and Autobiographies)
ASIN: 0824519728 |
Book Description
Henry Ossawa Tanner is a turn-of-the-century African-American painter who achieved great success in France and is now becoming even more famous in the U.S. Alongside the landscapes that brought him great acclaim, Tanner was also a genius in depicting Biblical scenes. This book examines Tanner's rich life through the lens of his paintings.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent biography of a great artist.......2002-05-29
One of the most stunning moments in my art-watching career came many years ago in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, when I suddenly came upon Henry Tanner's painting "The Annunciation." I remained transfixed for many minutes. It remains my favorite religious painting of the last couple of centuries. I soon learned that the artist was the first African-American to make it to the artistic top, the stratospheric heights of French Salon shows and membership in the American National Academy of Design. Tanner was almost forgotten for a long time, but there is a flock of webpages and internet resources on him now, as well as this wonderful biography.
Marcus Bruce has written a brief book that lays out Tanner's lifecourse, centering on the religious and spiritual side, which was, in fact, Tanner's true focus. (Tanner, a minister's son, remained deeply religious all his life.) This book is not only clear and authoritative; it has some of the most insightful art criticism that I have seen. Bruce is far from the "in the right corner we see a dog" school of art writing. He describes the paintings in relation to Tanner's spiritual quest, and Tanner's vision of the world and humanity. His account of my beloved "Annunciation" is a real masterpiece.
My only complaint with this book (besides sloppy editing--there are too many typos) is that it is too short and does not have color pictures! I hope, even pray, that Dr. Bruce will go on to do a full-scale, large-format art book about Henry Tanner, with the major works in full color. Tanner certainly deserves it--he still has not received the recognition he deserves--and Bruce is the man to do it.
