excellant for all purposes.......2000-07-31
This was a comprehensive guidebook that gave enough information on all subjects to get you where you were going, tell you how to do things, and alert you to diverse sites and events that were especially interesting. Most important was its way of presenting enough historical, cultural, and political information to make one aware and able to navigate Barcelona's unique environment while at the same time exponentially increasing curiousity. We were working up until the time of our flight and skimmed the book en route. We had never been to Spain, didn't speak Spanish and yet spent two weeks in Barcelona without any difficulties and used only this book as our guide. As a direct result of the ease of use and interest the guide book piqued we bought and read many books on Catalonian history, political history, social culture, Picasso, Gaudi, architecture, etc. while we were exploring the city, making our two weeks of travel instead of a tour of cities into one of the more in depth, interesting trips we've ever taken. In three months we've given a copy of the book to two other families going to Barcelona, tracked down the other Insight Guides and begun to plan next summer's trip around one of them.
Probably the best guide to this beautiful city........2000-05-02
The separate, removable map which is included makes this book worth the purchase. The map lists all sidestreets, which is necessary to navigate the city. The book itself gives just enough history to familiarize yourself with Barcelona and Catalonia, and then takes you on a neighborhood by neighborhood tour. Lots of good photos throughout. More detailed than the smaller compact version from the same company. Not quite as detailed as guides from other companies (e.g. doesn't include much for phone numbers or tourist tips), but is easier to read than they are.

Book Description
The Outsider is an unsentimental yet profoundly moving look at one family’s experience with mental illness. In 1978, Charles Lachenmeyer was a happily married professor of sociology who lived in the New York suburbs with his wife and nine-year-old son, Nathaniel. But within a few short years, schizophrenia–a devastating mental illness with no known cure–would cost him everything: his sanity, his career, his family, even the roof over his head. Upon learning of his father’s death in 1995, Nathaniel set out to search for the truth behind his father’s haunted, solitary existence. Rich in imagery and poignant symbolism,
The Outsider is a beautifully written memoir of a father’s struggle to survive with dignity, and a son’s struggle to know the father he lost to schizophrenia long before he finally lost him to death.
The Outsider is a recipient of the Kenneth Johnson Memorial Research Library Book Award and is the winner of the 2000 Bell of Hope Award, presented annually by the Mental Health Association of Philadelphia to honor “significant and far-reaching contributions benefiting those facing the challenge of mental illness.”
Download Description
Nathaniel Lachenmeyer's childhood memories center around his warm, attentive father, a man whose exceptional mind earned him accolades as a sociology professor and author. But when Charles Lachenmeyer was stricken with paranoid schizophrenia, a disease that afflicts millions of Americans, his relationship with his family -- and to the world -- disintegrated. While most adolescents reject their parents as a universal rite of passage, Nathaniel's break from his father became permanent. The Outsider is the story of Nathaniel's attempt to reconnect with his father years after they were separated at the height of Charles's illness.

Lesson #1 for the programmed masses.......2007-02-18
Unfortunately, most readers of this book, as well as the author of the book, even if he is his son, are misinformed. I've spent a lot of time around mentally ill people who really do seem to have something dead wrong in their brain/body biochemistry, as well as imbalances of all sorts. Charles Lachenmeyer, the Outsider, was not crazy, except for the extremely stressful situations that he was forced into from OUTSIDE ( pun intended ) sources. He was no fool, he had a PhD in sociology and was a University professor of the same. A man doesn't just go from that kind of being to a homeless guy sleeping in a puddle of his own urine on a park bench in -0 degree weather. His books are still in the sociology section of Borders and Barnes n' Noble bookstores. What happened was that Charles came up with a multi-million dollar idea as to how to revolutionarily re-structure society in a much more efficient way. However, he refused to share his idea with his colleagues, thusly with the government. Charles wanted full credit for his own idea, and rightly so. So his colleagues teamed up with various government and probably military agencies to try to ruin his life, basically to torment him into sharing his breakthrough idea of sociology. Anyone who is naive enough to doubt that various agencies are well-versed in mind-control technology and psychological warfare, needs to seriously deprogram themselves from their own mental conditioning. MK ULTRA, MAJIC, OPERATION MIND CONTROL, etc. as well as other operations are no mere conspiracy stories, even the agencies themselves willingly admit that they did these operations now, being that so much time has passed. Unfortunately, Mr. Charles Lachenmeyer was subject to their torture devices. His embarrassing dreams at night were, in turn, reenacted the following days in braod daylight public view to humiliate him by " strangers ". His family life was sabotaged away from him, leaving him all alone except for his comanion, his dog. Of course, then, the dog was kidnapped away from him, leaving him emotionally bankrupt and spent. He was then subjected to the final part of the plan, which was to make him seem like some crazy " schizophrenic " spouting off conspiracy stories, and unfortunately, even his son Nathaniel, bought into this. The whole time Charles was homeless, he was writing, more and more he was expanding on his breakthrough, as well as exposing the mind-control that he was subjected to, probably naming important names in his book. Charles was ultimately killed, and " his papers were mysteriously lost in a flood in his apartment " ( how convenient to lose all of the evidence ) All in all I think Nathaniel did well to honor his dad in this book, and I do believe that his intentions were good. The book is excellent, and I read it back to back 3 times in a row. But .... Seem like he was simply a brilliant man that became schizophrenic? Well let me pat you on the back, that's exactly what they want you to think.
A Book Everyone Should Read.......2005-11-02
I truly believe this book should be read by everyone, not just people that are going into the mental health field. I was required to ready it for a Social Work class I am currently taking at the undergraduate level; however, I can say without a doubt it is by far the best book I have ever read! Lachenmeyer really brings home the stigma and heartache that is experienced by people and their loved ones suffering from such a debilitating mental illness. Most people are unaware of the devastating effects mental illness can have on a person and their family. This book highlights so many issues concerning mental health as to responsibilities of people in the system, stigma, prejudice, and the tolerance of society in general to someone suffering from mental illness. Moreover, this book was really an awakening that this could happen to anyone at any time. I wish everyone could read this book as it really teaches a lesson on humanity!!
Heartbreaking and poignant.......2005-08-20
THE OUTSIDER brought the pain and the struggles of Charles Lachenmeyer to life. Charles was a brillant sociology professor who gradually was transformed into a victim of paranoid schizophrenia. Even at his lowest points, he kept trying, and he kept believing in humanity. In one letter to the author, he wrote, "No matter how adverse the circumstances--and mine have been adverse--there is never any reason to give up . . ."
This book breathes life into a person with mental illness, and it brings understanding. It left me in tears and with a deep respect for Charles.
The Outsider.......2005-08-02
I found the Outsider to be a fascinating book, one that really opened my eyes to the problems encountered by those suffereing from mental illness and schizophrenia. The son's journey to understand the father and piece together the last few years of his life is heart-wrenching and the reader truly sympathizes with his pain and anguish. A terrific book that I heartily recommend.
Should be a movie.......2004-11-16
How many times have we looked at homeless people on the street and wondered how they got there? I've thought about it many times, because my own father was homeless when he died. When I searched for books about people with homeless parents, Lachenmeyer's "The Outsider" was the only one I could find. I expected a revealing look at what it's like to have an indigent parent - what I didn't expect was for it to be so touching, well-written, and kind. I hope others read it and have more compassion for the nameless people haunting our streets. All of them have family somewhere.

Customer Reviews:
Touched By All Creatures.......2002-04-15
Gay Balliet's grandmother taught her to appreciate nature and all creatures when she was a child. Her grandmother also taught her how to communicate with animals. Balliet says she "learned that not only was my own life and the lives of my parents and grandparents sacred, but that all life, down to the tiniest creature of the garden, was important."
Gay grew up to marry veterinarian Edgar Balliet. As well as earning a Ph.D. in English and developing her own career as a college professor, she assisted her husband with his patients. Touched By All Creatures is her delightful account of the animals she and Dr. Balliet doctored, as well as their unforgettable owners. It also chronicles their personal growth both as individuals and as a couple.
Working in the Pennsylvania Dutch country, the Balliets cared primarily for farm animals. Dr. Balliet later provided care for animals at a nearby game preserve, expanding the cast of characters in their lives to include monkeys, raptors, buffalo, and a white tiger, among other exotic creatures.
Balliet says that for her and Edgar, "here with the animals, our friends, is the life we both value." Each anecdote is told with love and compassion for life, with lots of humor sprinkled in.
Touched By All Creatures is a book that readers will return to again and again whenever they need a pleasurable respite from their harried lives. It's also a great gift for anyone who loves animals.
Book Description
Are you a fabric collector, quilt collector, appraiser, or antiques collector who needs to know specifics about fabrics or quilts? Then this book is for you! It will help you identify, date, and recognize antique fabrics and their uses in quilts and clothing. Over 1,000 color fabric swatches are listed in this handy, easy-to-use reference guide. You'll be able to identify fabric dating from the pre-1830 era through the Second World War. Match your antique fabric by selecting a suspected time period and comparing colors and prints. REVIEW: There are many books out with beautiful color prints of quilts from various eras but until now we couldn't examine an extensive collection of fabrics. Dating Fabrics: A Color Guide 1800-1960 offers this opportunity by organizing hundreds of fabric swatches by period. For each period, Eileen Trestain gives us fascinating information about how textiles were made, dyes were used and prints created in the making of fabrics during that time period.

Dating Fabric.......2007-06-27
I am the teacher for our Guild with the Block of the Month. This book gave me addition education to share with our members. Where we all began in the USA..
Dating Fabrics 1 & 2 - Trestain.......2007-01-10
These two books were purchased for donation to the local library in memory of deceased relatives of our local quilt guild. We were familiar with the books and felt the historical importance of the information would merit their addition to the library. They are spiral bound and beautifully illustrated. Persons trying to date and evaluate old quilts will find them very useful.
Three Decades is a Long Time Span.......2006-05-14
I purchased this book mostly to help date vintage fabrics from the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. I love the spiral binding. The swatch examples are awesome. The notes on color and styles are helpful. I do feel, however, that lumping 1930 through 1960 photos together with no notes does not really help to date the fabric accurately enough.
Quilt fabrics.......2005-09-30
This book would be of interest to quilters and those interested in dating quilts. The patterns are listed in colour headings under 20 to 30 year groupings eg 1880-1910 and there are several pages in front of each year grouping with details including the period, textile colours, fabric print styles and quilt styles. The pictures are in colour and the book spiral bound so it will lie flat easily when open - good for making comparisons of quilt material.
What a lovely book for anyone who loves vintage fabrics.......2005-01-14
I love repro fabrics for quilting but wanted to learn more about them. This is a particularly well done book, with good color and real-life sizing of the prints. Each period section begins with a few pages that covers what was happening in the period, what fabrics were popular, what quilt blocks and quilting patterns were popular, etc. There's also a bit on how the fabric was manufactured in that period. Fabrics before 1830 took an enormous amount of work and were basically done laboriously with hand-coloring and wood blocks -- very labor intensive process to produce prints. The prints they produced remind me (not surprisingly since India was the source of much of the cotton fabric then) of the gauzy prints from India that you still see today. There's a discussion of popular colors and dyes, and the fabrics are organized by color within each period section. Now I know what Turkey red is -- including where the dye came from, when it appeared, etc.
This is a wonderful book, but then, I love vintage fabrics.
Book Description
Gardening Through Your Golden Years is a book about gardening wisdom and "seasoned" gardeners who have much knowledge and wisdom to share.
Gardening Through Your Golden Years is a wonderful gift for a gardening friend…from one seasoned gardener to another. As author Jim Wilson says, the book will be shared from one golden gardener to another as recognition for a job well done. It will be a gift of appreciation for their continuing love and their success in gardening. Also, it will be a thoughtful gift for a family member who loves gardening.
The book will also have tremendous interest among younger gardeners who appreciate the wisdom available from those who have practiced the art for so many years.
The heart of the book is ten essays about specific older gardeners, based on personal interviews conducted by the Author. Jim Wilson has selected a range of gardeners from across the country, from a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds…all with a lengthy devotion to gardening. We see them through color photography of their gardens.
This is a not only a book about gardening wisdom, it is a practical book that will help the reader garden smarter, not harder.

Book Description
Benny Hills saucy smirks and lascivious glances are relished across all continents and creeds. Yet he cut an unlikely figure of adoration: uninterested in money and with scant material needs, he was a deeply private individual, a loner, overweight, unmarried and emotionally enfeebled in his few relationships despite a compulsion to be seen in the close company of scantily-clad women.Acclaimed as the first British TV comedy superstar, a national treasure in the 1950s, his career burgeoned internationally in the 1980s just as he was becoming increasingly reviled in his home country. His mode of comedy was branded sexist, a charge he did not foresee, could not comprehend and was unable to alter. Though he was rich beyond his wildest dreams, and certainly well in excess of his meagre needs, the fall from grace led to the end of his long-running TV show and a terminal decline in his health. This is the first objective and full account of Benny Hills life and work. Tenaciously researched yet sensitively reported, it charts the unlikely rise, sad demise and many paradoxes of a decent man whose strengthsobservation, impression and mime, fashioned by the stars of the silent screen, music hall and Varietybrought him unimagined and unparalleled success.
Customer Reviews:
All of Benny Hill is exceptional.......2005-12-25
Good but slightly flawed
I bought this book not only because BCCA started to run the half-hour series again, but because I remembered reading a story in the paper a number of years ago how Benny Hill died alone in a sparsely furnished apartment, unloved.
What I got was a tremendous insight into English vaudeville and its morphing into radio and then television. I also got a tremendous amount of information about Hill's life, as other reviews note. I would, however, like to focus this review on the author's highly critical look at Benny Hill's work after he brought together the Hill's angels. The author unabashedly takes the feminist line that these programs were sexist, and there's no doubt that while the programs themselves were probably enough to get the feminists atwitter, now that BBCA is showing the uncut hour long shows, Hill's on air ridicule of the feminists was what really did it. I hadn't seen the hour long shows when I read the biography, so I more or less took the author at his word. Now that I've seen them, I have two comments. In no way are the Hill's Angels in any way objectionable. The author's comment, what did they have to do with comedy, is misdirected because they had everything to do with framing the skits that were carried within the performances. I think some of Hill's best work was done in these years.
My second comment is more of a revelation. I've always wondered exactly what it was that set Hill apart, the quality that no one else could or ever will duplicate. I realized watching these later shows that Hill had done something no one else had ever been able to do. He brought vaudeville, in its true form, to television. From childhood, he was steeped in, although unsuitable for, vaudeville. Television gave his strength, an acute eye for vaudeville, and his weakness, an inability to project beyond the tenth row of seats, the perfect format. It happened once, and that's the only time it will ever happen.
Finally, as to his death alone in a sparsely furnished room. The picture of Hill dead looks pretty bleak. However, the author makes one thing clear. Benny Hill did in life exactly as he pleased, lived his life exactly the way he wanted to live it, and knowing he was going to die soon, died exactly the way he wanted to die, eating candy bars, drinking, and watching his beloved TV. He had no regrets about anything in life and he was surrounded by people who loved him dearly. Even his failed romances weren't romances, but attempts to reach for unattainable women so he never had to make a commitment that would limit his freedom to do as he pleased. The one time he was expected to make a commitment, he ran fast. Hill did what he wanted in life, and to do that, he had to live and travel alone, and that's exactly what he did. Definitely buy this book, but don't let the author's prejudices dissuade you from enjoying all of Hill's work. As to the author's hope the British return to an appreciation of Hill, it'll never happen, but that doesn't stop us from enjoying him.
We only knew the laughter..........2005-02-24
This book is a tremendously thorough examination of Benny's life, and there are some surprises here for those who are only aware of him through his television shows. Lewisohn pulls no punches and leaves very little unturned, both good and bad. It is unfortunate that Benny is now almost taboo in his own country. Having read this book, I will appreciate his comedy in a different light.
good evening viewers!.......2004-11-04
An excellent biography of the funniest man who ever stole a gag from another comedian. Yes it's Benny Hill, a man who took a name because is sounded Jewish and wrote some of the funniest songs ever using the most recycled of jokes.
His humour was what the people wanted in the seventies, coarse slightly obscene and saucy. He deserved the title of the the worlds most popular comedian. It was a shame that Benny ended up as a target for feminists and other politically correct groups and was eventually sacked for his humour. The people that hounded him must have been very humourless, cold hearted people indeed.
The book is great though there are few mistakes here and there with respect to show titles and content. I recommend anyone who is interested in British actors and theatre read this book.

An exemplary biography of a misunderstood man.......2002-11-07
This is one of the finest biographies I have read in years -- it penetrates deeply into the formative experiences and motivations of this strange and reclusive figure, and brings him vividly to life. Many interviewees discouraged the author from this task, but he persevered, and we have much to thank him for. All Benny Hill fans will now watch and enjoy his familiar sketches -- shamelessly recycled over the years -- with an added appreciation for their origins and rationale. Lewisohn helps us to delve into the psyche of this mysterious man, at once the embodiment of little Englishness, yet also a sensitive soul and a student of foreign cultures and languages.
The book is not unblemished. Benny's 50s farce, "Who Done It", is not nearly as abysmal as the author suggests (it's adequate slapstick with a few laughs -- how many 50s British movies has Lewisohn seen, there are many worse!). Benny's frugality is surely comprehensible in a man who had withstood wartime privations; and that character trait, combined with the much-hyped locker-room chit-chat with Bob Monkhouse, was regrettable but entirely standard male behavior for the 1950s. Despite all the conventional wisdom to the contrary, Benny did evolve. And--again with respect to Lewisohn--Benny scaled some of his finest heights of inspiration during his latest years with Thames. I am thinking of the Chubby Dodds documentary, and Murder on the Orient Express, and the "Family" skit, which bring smiles and laughter without fail, though I know them back to front. Of course, he was a comedian who operated rather too comfortably within his decent but clearly defined artistic parameters. Yet what was comforting for Benny was also reassuring for us... Lewisohn is right that Benny Hill's work will return to favor some day. It deserves to.

This is a fascinating, first-rate biography of one of the twentieth century's most beloved comedy figures; a man who is now largely overlooked in his home country despite having been its most successful comic export outside of Charlie Chaplin. Benny Hill was a complex man who led a simple (if somewhat peculiar) life, and this book provides tremendous insight into not only his personal foibles and professional endeavors, but also the motivations and reasons for his intriguing private behavior and public rise and fall. Drawing on extensive research and fresh interviews with many of the key figures in Benny's life, Mark Lewisohn's writing combines warmth, empathy and humor with analysis, objectivity and attention to detail -- the comic inventiveness and outright stealing of other artists' ideas; the abnormally excessive frugality; the sexual indulgences and hopelessly failed relationships... whether you want to know about the man's career, his love life or the fact that he just loved a quick game of Kalooki, it's all here. Book Description
Behind the Scenes presents the story of Dublin's famous Abbey Theatre and its major creative personalities: W. B. Yeats, Annie Horniman, J. M. Synge, and Lady Gregory. Part history, part sociology, part biography, Frazier's work recreates the forces that shaped the Abbey stage, forces that involved the spirited participation of actors, audiences, press, and financiers as well as of the famous poet-playwright who was its co-director. His book unfolds an entertaining and suspenseful tale, centered on the undeniably autocratic personality of W.B. Yeats and with the political struggles of Ireland as a backdrop.
