The Papers of Jefferson Davis is a project out of Rice University in Houston, Texas. The entire series is well-edited, nicely produced and the format of the series is reader-friendly. The books reproduce all of the letters Davis wrote, as well as his speeches, telegrams and the responses to his letters. The responses appear in the footnotes and the appendix of the books.

Not just about pros- good people facing hard choices.......2005-10-19

The reviewer who says HA! can't have read this book. Maybe Canseco's book, but not this one. I recently met LaFontaine, a man who loved his sport passionately, and like all professional athletes, was trained to ignore the pain. He now works very hard to create multimedia rooms in hospitals for very ill children. His foundation is called Companions in Courage.

There's a chapter in the book about a potential Olympic medalist who didn't fight the final bout to qualify (tae-kwon-do). It was not because her opponent was also her friend, though she was; it was because her opponent had dislocated her kneecap in the previous bout. The athlete forfeited, rather than take a sure win from a wounded opponent.
That's an amazing story, not another "pro athlete look at my pain" whine.

Michael J. Fox wrote the most recent foreword. LaFontaine is always working for his foundation, and he volunteers to be part of the prize for several charities' live auctions.These prizes have included: Golf with Pat LaFontaine, Hockey lessons with Pat LaFontaine, and more.

LaFontaine's book is like the man; genuine, intensely hard-working and willing to face fear head-on and try to come out the other side. I can't say enough about it.

A matter of balance.......2002-06-05

The previous reviewer does not appear to have read the book. While there a fair amount of discussion about LaFontaine and his career challenges, the book focuses on anonymous, unremarkable people, who manage to accomplish absolutely amazing things. There are several themes running through the book: the crucial role fathers play in the development of their children; the importance of faith in healing families and overcoming obstacles; the power of persistence and determination in changing lives. LaFontaine comes across as a humble, thoughtful, and decent man; there is little self-promotion or self-pity in his writing. Most of the stories (and there are dozens of individuals' stories told in this book) are told in two or three pages, making it perfect for teenagers. I have used these stories in teaching my own family, and in my role as a Church leader.

We are a nation steeped in nastiness. We spend incredible amounts of energy thinking of creative ways to tear one another down. A great man has said, "Cynics do not contribute, skeptics do not create, doubters do not acheive." Pat LaFontaine is a good and decent man, who has given much of his life to service. This book is a wonderful reminder that there are ample reasons for hope, that there is much goodness left among us. His work trancends the naysaying of people who can't get past the fact that he made his living playing professional hockey.

Inspirational? Ha !!.......2001-04-15

"Triumphant Tales" aims to be the inspiring tale of athletes and the misfortunes they have overcome, but instead succeeds merely at coming across as the sort of touchy-feely,pseudo-inspirational, stories that appear regularly on daytime talk-shows like Oprah and Sally Jesse Raphael. The athletes profiled in this book practically scream "look at the obstacles I have overcome," as if the mere fact that they have encountered hardships makes them simultaneously deserving of our pity and to be looked upon as heroes. The tales the athletes tell become fairly monotonous, with only the inclusion of former NHL star Pat LaFontaine accounting for the fact that this book was even published. The writing is pedestrian - even by sportswriting standards. Moreover, the book has no purpose other than to tell "Triumphant Tales of Heroic Athletes," as the subtitle states a little too obviously. The photo of the Olympic torch on the cover practically begs to be mocked, as if these writers have no sense of irony and actually believe the heroic tales they spin. What role did the NHL, television, and money play in Pat LaFontaine's repeated comebacks, despite the permanent damage that could have resulted from another concussion? This book will never tell, because that would only undermine the familiar template of innocent athlete being struck by (fill-in-the-blank illness) much too early, only to somehow overcome it in the end. Potential buyers be warned - life is too short to spend reading this book.

An inspiring and uplifting collection of life's stories.......2001-01-29

Companions in Courage is an inspiring and emotionally touching collection of the stories of how over 50 athletes were able to cope with their misfortunes. Few of us go through life without being tested either physically or mentally. Everyone who has been struck with these problems and is looking for inspirational guidance to overcome their condition should read this book.

This is not your typical "athlete retires, writes his memoirs" book. Rather, it is an aggregation of inspirational stories that are as uplifting as they are touching. The dynamic of the human spirit is on full display in this compilation, and it's all wrapped in a neat bow by one of sport's all-time great role models - Pat LaFontaine. Dragonfly guide review.......2007-09-17

I have several guides for birds, butterflies, snakes, reptiles and amphibians. I just started learn about dragonflies this year and this is one of the best guides I have seen. In fact, it was highly recommended by an individual who has a Masters Degree in dragonfly study. I recommend it for individuals just starting out with dragonflies as the photos are great but it also provides enough information (range maps) to let you narrow down and identify the more difficult species.

The Texas Odonata Bible.......2006-12-23

This field guide is the one to own. It covers not only all the dragonflies of Texas and the Southcentral US, but all the damselflies as well. The photographs are superb and this make for easy identification of species in the field. However, because of these pluses, the result is a rather sizable guide that is just a bit too heavy to really qualify as a handy field guide. If you can deal with its size and weight, it more than makes up for this handicap in thes helpful information it provides. The only drawback and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is because it is a tad less user friendly for the novice or non-professional (i.e. The species identification keys are a bit confusing). Nevertheless, it is destined to become the standard to measure all other guides.

A Complete Guide to South-Central Odonates.......2005-11-08

As an admirer of dragonflies and damselflies I was quite delighted to find this book by John C. Abbott. It is a mix of the very technical and (at least in part because of the 64 plates of magnificent color photos) the very useful for the non-specialist. The range maps are invaluable as a way of adding clues for the identification of similar species. The line drawings of anatomical parts are important in separating closely related species and the glossary of terms, the check list, and the large bibliography round out a very useful or even indispensable volume for the dragonfly watcher. In short, this book is a serious guide to an area with the highest odonate diversity in the United States. "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the South-Central United States" simply is a must for anyone interested in the odonate fauna of the five states involved. Its production, along with at least three earlier regional and national books on the subject, is a testimonial to the growing popularity of these beautiful and fascinating insects.

A serious book for the serious reader.......2005-08-20

This is not a book that you can skim; rather, it is one intended for the serious student of Odonata in Texas. Written by an acknowledged expert in the field, it covers everything you might want to know about the dragonflies found in Texas.

Be warned, though, that you cannot approach this book lightly. The author uses scientific terms liberally: you will have to spend time acquiring the vocabulary.

For the serious Texas "Odo-nut" this is an absolutely essential part of your library.

Oklahoma Bird Life is a delightful reference. Whenever a pair of birds begins nesting in the yard, I head straight for this book. Oklahoma Bird Life provides info on the birds' range, migration, habitat, # of eggs in a brood, incubation periods, fledge times, and what the birds eat. The narrative stories make reading about the birds a pleasure. For example, the authors tell a wonderful story about Carolina Chickadees in their own yard. The color plates and numerous photos bring the book to life and help with identification. While I live in Georgia, Oklahoma Bird Life includes most species of birds, and I am never disappointed.

The information in Oklahoma Bird Life enabled us to postpone a roofing job for 2 weeks to allow robins to fledge. I highly recommend Oklahoma Bird Life to people who enjoy learning about birds. It is much better than a list of facts, as the stories make it so delightful.

I love this book. The bag pattern instructions are easy to read and follow and most can be finished within a few hours. Although one has to enlarge the patterns, it cost me only $11.50 for the entire book at my local copy center. If I had to purchase each pattern separately, at approximately $10.00 per pattern - a real bargain. I've already made three of the bags from this book and plan to make more.

I like the book, love the ideas and the inspiration. The variety is great with zippers and open tops and metal hex closures. A great way to expand your bag making! The patterns do not come full size or with dimensions to fudge them to the right size. Instead, you are given a pattern shape and instructed to "Enlarge 111%" or "Enlarge 150%." Kind of kills the spur of the moment creativity, unless you have a large copier in your house or pre-copy all the patterns ahead of time.

Alfred Rehder was the curator of the Herbarium of the Arnold Arboretum. He was German born and a self-taught taxonomist, arriving at the Arboretum in 1898 and first employed to weed the shrub collection. His keen taxonomic judgment was quickly recognized however.

The Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs Hardy in North America Exclusive of the Subtropical and Warmer Temperate Regions, best known as "Rehder's Manual", was first published in 1927. This release is a reprinted the second edition, published in 1940.

Alfred Rehder's book was designed to complement Sargent's Manual of the Trees of North America (exclusive of Mexico) and Gray's Manual of Botany, which documents the native vegetation of the same region.

Rehder's goal of a concise compilation of all the woody plants known to be cultivated in eastern North America was achieved in the volume. For each of the 2,300 species of trees and shrubs covered in the book, Rehder included a concise physical description, as well as time of flowering and fruiting, references to published illustrations, region of native habitat, date of introduction into cultivation, hardiness zone, and comments on horticultural merit or special cultural requirements. He gave distinguishing features and pertinent information for 2,465 varieties.

Brief mention was included of another 1,265 species and 507 hybrids that were either less well known or rarely cultivated. Its value to nurserymen, gardeners, arborists, botanical garden curators, and anyone else needing to identify trees and shrubs became readily apparent.

Gary Chapman en su libro Los cinco lenguajes del amor, observa que hay cinco maneras generales de expresar amor.

a) Palabras de afirmación (como el reconocer logros, elogiar y dar ánimo).
b) Tiempo de calidad (como el escuchar con atención, realizar paseos y viajes juntos).
c) Recibir regalos (como las flores, las joyas y los libros).
d) Actos de servicio (como lavar el automóvil, cortar el césped, hacer la comida, cuidarle en la enfermedad).
e) Toque físico (como tomar la mano, dar abrazos, besos).

Es de suma importancia que cada cónyuge descubra cuál de estos "lenguajes" aprecia más su cónyuge. Es grato y aun necesario "hablar" todos estos lenguajes emocionales para expresar amor a su cónyuge, pero conviene un énfasis especial en aquel que el o ella siente hondamente. Es posible que uno esté amando con un lenguaje que el otro apenas siente o entiende como amor. For everybody.......2007-08-30

I think there are very few books out there that literally anyone could benefit from. Singles, couples, kids, anybody. I recommend this book a lot, if nothing else just for the sheer value of people becoming more aware of their relationships.
I know my parents marriage was in part saved by this book and some of the deeper understanding it brought them.
If it were up to me, there would be a copy on every book shelf.

Simple and sophiscated at same time.......2007-08-21

Over the years I have counseled many people purchased many, many excellent relationship books, despite the slight Religious References this book is among the top ten, no the top 3 under essential reading. Here advice seems simple untill you start practicing, it takes a bit of work, but the results are excellent! I intend to buy more copies of this and her book for couples on The Five love Languages, to give away. Her advice is excellent for anyone who wants to get along better with someone in their life, family, friends, business associates well as Significent Others.

Another relationship book skimming the surface.......2007-08-01

I liked this book a lot, but it's yet another one that gives the impression that you can fix relationships by simply applying rules that you learn. It doesn't really get into the driving forces of what gets people into the relationship situations that they find themselves in before they start reading it - and these are always subconscious drivers that need to be understood and learned patterns and responses changed. Otherwise, all you do is try to apply things that are foreign to you, and in the long run that cannot work and isn't realistic. Try Fit for Love: Find Your Self and Your Perfect Mate, and then read this. I found that the two in tandem work well, but you need both.

A must read for those in any kind of life situation.......2007-07-10

It really gives you a deeper understanding to things I would've never even thought about as far as relationships and communicating with others.
The concepts are relateable to real life experiences, in almost any situation whether family work friends or significant others are involved.
I'm only 24, but I am glad I read this book now as it has given me a lot of valuable insight into how to express love "languages" to others. A must-read for all you out there that want to communicate and understand your loved ones better.

I had the original book on my wish list for some time, and then I found out about this book. Later, I saw a friend of mine from church who had a copy, and she said it was wonderful. So I immediately ordered my own copy.

I was not disappointed.

Seeing these insights led me to realize why it was that I preferred certain activities and certain behaviors in a relationship, and it leads me to explore what another could want from me. And since this is directed towards single adults, this seemed more applicable to my situation than the original.

Now, a warning to the non-religious. Yes, this book quotes the Bible frequently. But instead of doing so with the intention of disguising a religious tract as a self-help book, the author does a masterful job of quoting scripture while staying marvelously on point, and he maintains the focus implicitly promised in the title-helping you improve your relations with others.

If you are a single adult, read this book. Don't let the religious sprinklings turn you off. This book is valuable even if you ignore them.

The remarkable career of composer-orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett (1894-1981) encompassed a wide variety of both "legitimate" and popular music-making in Hollywood, on Broadway, and for television. Bennett is principally responsible for what is known worldwide as the "Broadway sound" and for greatly elevating the status of the theater orchestrator. He worked alongside Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, and Frederick Loewe on much of the Broadway canon, eventually providing orchestrations for all or part of more than 300 musicals between 1920 and 1975. This work is the first publication of Bennett's autobiography, which was written in the late 1970s. It also includes eight of his most important essays on the art of orchestration. George J. Ferencz is professor of music at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

Now back in print, this life of George Eastman is the first biography since 1930 of the man who transformed the world of photography. In this revealing and informative work, Brayer shows us how such key innovations as roll film and the light, hand-held camera helped the Eastman Kodak Company dominate the world market. More importantly, Brayer draws a vivid portrait of the man behind the money. Eastman worked hard at staying out of the limelight and even insisted that his donations be kept anonymous, prompting the Boston Globe to call him "America's most modest and least-known millionaire." Despite his retirement in 1925, Eastman showed little sign of slowing down. Making money had been interesting, but putting money to work became more so. In the 1920s he designed a special camera for use in orthodontia and established elaborate dental clinics for needy children around the world. He oversaw the building of the Eastman theatre and the Eastman School of Music. His contributions built a new campus for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a new medical school for the University of Rochester. Finally, he became the largest contributor to the education of African Americans during the 1920s and the Tuskegee Institute's most important benefactor. Elizabeth Brayer lives in Rochester, NY. For the past 18 years she has served on both the George Eastman Legacy and the Landscape committees at the George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film. She writes about the history of central and Western New York State. George Eastman: A Biography was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1996.

George Eastman was one of the seminal figures in the development of photography. Eastman was the founder of the Eastman Kodak Company. Brayer's scholarly biography is long and definitive.

Eastman was perhaps the first scientist-engineer entrepreneur, a model followed later by men like Edwin Land and Bill Gates. Brayer skillfully weaves his engineering feats with his financier skills into a highly readable biography. Eastman was like Gates and Land, a hands-on entrepreneur. Stories abound about Eastman's midnight haunts through his factory, showing up in the wee hours unannounced to some startled employee working late on a project.

I was constantly amazed at Eastman's ingenuity. Eastman the inventory of flexible film, made his first commercial batches by spreading the celluloid out on level 100-foot long glass topped tables. It wasn't until many years later they finally found a way to machine make it.

For my taste there was far too much information on the architecture and building of Eastman House. Since Brayer, as I understand it, was or maybe still is, an employee of Eastman House, now a foundation supported museum of photography, this is understandable. I did find it amusing that Eastman used Belgian imported glass plates that were to be used in the factory as a film base as window glass in the House. Window glass will have an occassional ripple or bubble, but not these. George always had to have the very best.

Brayer has shed some new light on several of the patent infringement lawsuits that went against Eastman.
