"Forest Trees of Illinois" is a an excellent source of comprehensive information about tree species in Illinois. The book is clear and concise. Each species is thoroughly defined through a text description, realistic drawing, photo and a map indicating species location. The book is especially helpful for woody identification. The IDNR Forest Resources department successfully presents a helpful format appropriate for a wide range of nature enthusiasts, from professional foresters to community members wishing to know their local forests intimately. "Forest Trees" is cost effective in light of the abundant data encompassed in the book and also offers other resources for additional information. I recommend "Forest Trees of Illinois" without reservation for every member of our Illinois community to learn the precious natural resource of trees around them!

I bought this book expecting it to be a useless gimmick--especially since I've hated Alley's other mtb guide books. Lo and behold, it's a gem with a specific and useful purpose: if you're going to visit the national parks in these states and want to ride in or around them, this book is essential. I ride and my partner doesn't, and she loves National Parks, where good riding can be hard to find, so this book saved our lives--she would visit the park and I would head out to find a nearby ride. The trail and road choices are good--the treatment of trails/roads around the south rim of the Grand Canyon is the best I've found. Alley casts her net widely around the parks--anything within 60 miles or so of the park counts. Thus the "trails in and near Tuzigoot Natl Monument" is really little more than a short list of trails in Sedona, 40 minutes away. Trail info is good, background info is fascinating, and the maps are the usual. Each park or monument begins with a handy one-paragraph summary of the riding opportunities, e.g. "Near this park you have a choice of two nice road rides, one beautiful dirt road, and three challenging single-tracks." One inexplicable gaff: the book omits Canyon de Chelly, so you're on your own, but you only have two paved roads to choose from there anyway.

This study is a wonderful compilation of the life and writings of Thomas Jefferson. The introduction by Koch and Peden of Jefferson's long and fruitful life is rich and complete. Jefferson's greatness shines forth in the pages of this volume. His Anas, Autobiography, Essay of the Anglo Saxon language, Notes on Virginia, And his numerous public papers and letters show the reader the depth of this great man. Koch and Peden clearly admire Jefferon which is a welcome respite from the sad and anti-intellectual deconstructionist philosophy of modern historians. No PC here. For a student of Jefferson, or someone attempting to familiarize themselves with his ideals, this is a great buy!
A excellent anthology for your library.......2000-09-15
We added this book to our library when I was doing research for a doctoral project on Racism. In one volume, is Jefferson's autobiography, travel journals, essays, biographies of other historical figures, notes and correspondence. It is a wealth of material into a foundation stone personality of our American identity.
Lately Jefferson has drawn fire because of his position on slavery and his philandering activities as a plantation owner. Still, within this volume you can observe the full story historical context provides.
In my favorite passage in connection with the slavery issue he writes,
"And can the liberties of a nation be though secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of thepeople that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever; that considering numbers,nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation is among possible events; that it may become probably by supernatural interference! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a contest." (Notes on Virginia, Query XVIII; p. 278 Modern Library Edition)
I think every family should have a copy of this volume in their library. It is enlightening, powerful and life changing material.

I purchased this book many times, it is one that I keep in my car. I use it to help teachers, friends and family members understand my children and others like them. It has helped me understand why I feel the frustration when my kids "don't get it" or need extra guidance in different situations or in the public school system. It is a book that I give to their teachers in hope that they will take the time to read it. As I read this book for the first time, I highlighted many sentences, example - page 17 - quote "She was so funny and effervescent and her behavior was so far frm being considered " a problem" that my mother gave up all attempts at discipline or even expressions of disapproval".... I can remember so many times my kids - acting out -- but in a way that was just "their way" they are so full of expressions and life.
most important - page 39 - There is more then enough heartace involved in coming to terms with the fact that your child is disabled. .... this is the truth, but with this book it helped me come to terms with it and I am trying to help others. Please take the time to read this book it will help you, empower you and your child. You are the voice for your child, you are their confidant. You need to read this book....another wonderful book is Legacy of the Blue Heron, Living with Learning Disabilities by Harry Sylvester.
If you have a special needs child, this is the book to read........2006-03-29
I have read many books out there, and this is the best one that I have found. This book is much better than Dana Buchman's book called "A Special Education" in which she constantly refers to her daughter's mild mental retardation as a "learning difference". In this book, the author is honest and tells it like it is.... she does not sugar coat it like Buchman's book. In Buckman's book, she talked too much about herself instead of her daughter. The only negative part of Anne Ford's book is that she constantly talked about the private schools refusing to let her child attend, but if she had picked a public school, it is the law that they would have to allow her child to attend. Most regular private schools would not have the resources that her child would require. For instance, speech therapist, occupation therapist, physical therapist are not necessarily found in private schools, but public schools would have these resources because they are required by law to teach all children. Anne Ford did note this in her book. Finally, here are some quotes from Anne Ford's book that might be helpful...
"a learning disability affects a person's ability to interpret what they see and hear or their ability to link information from different parts of the brain, because their brain is 'wired' a little differently. These differences can show up as specific difficulties with spoken and written language, with coordination, self-control, or with paying attention. People can have learning disabilities in reading, writing, math, and processing information."
"Most children with LD can read words, but comprehension may be another matter entirely."
"Children with LD can and do succeed in school."
"Adults with LD can and do succeed in the workplace."
"LD can be treated successfully, and children with LD can go on to live happy, normal lives."
In conclusion, I highly recommend this book to all parents who have special needs children, and the teachers who teaches them.

This is a wonderful book for any parent, written in an honest, unvarnished manner. Very insightful..... with lessons on supporting, loving, and accepting one's child no matter that the child's reality differs from the parents' dream.

that all those schools turned Allegra down, her being from the prominent family she's from! Maybe the schools weren't really right for her, but I guess I assumed some would have done cartwheels (and made some adjustments) for the privilege of having a Ford in their school.

Very fine expository writing for those interested in the history of and current state-of-the-art woodworking benches and accessories. Enclosed plans are a nice plus. The resource section is excellent. Well researched, well written, photography is exceptional.

For me this is a coffee table book. Alot of history and research about workbenches from the middle ages on up till now. Not much information or diagrams on building benches.

Excellent information for the woork bench I plan to build this winter. I would highly reccomend this to any woodworker that needs a work bench and doesn't want to spend a lot of money buying one.
Fascinating !.......2005-08-27
Scott Landis knows how to write. This is both a history book and a woodworking book, and I still loved it. I never liked history in HS or college, but if I had had Landis, I would have been a history major. The book is captivating virtually from cover to cover (although I found the latter chapters a little less enthralling than the first 3/4 of the book). I plan to build a significant workbench, and I bought this book thinking it would help me with ideas and planning. It did so much more than that, I'm stunned. The insights it gave me about different ways of working with wood have expanded beyond the previous limits of my imagination.
Landis' approach to describing the workbench from an historical perspective highlights the changes in tools that have occurred over the years and how benches have evolved alongside. I started reading the book as a devoted user of power tools who would put up with some hand tools if absolutely necessary. I ended with a much clearer understanding of how hand tools, working in conjunction with the appropriately designed and build bench, could enhance my woodworking pleasure and accomplishments. lol, I've even started buying high quality planes.
If you enjoy history, get this book.
If you want to gain better insight into ways to work wood, get this book.
I you are looking for bench plans, this has some, but I wouldn't buy it for the plans. While there's nothing wrong with the plans, they just seem sort of out-of-place here. I would rather have had more narrative.
If you are looking for a tutorial on how to build a bench, this is not the book.
If you just like looking at and reading about neat stuff made from wood, buy this book.
Bottom line - if in doubt, buy this book.

Great book and worth of reading.......2004-08-05
This book is written for parents/families with children of any age - from young children through the teenage years. Each chapter has an example family that is having a problem with a virtue covered in a chapter. In most chapters, the siblings in the family argue and do not get along. Well, not only this book has great ideas and examples of how families can teach different virtues to their children, but it also shows examples how to encourage the siblings in the family to get along and be kind to each other.
The structure of the book allows you to read any chapter as you choose. You don't have to read it from the beginning to the end. Say, your family has a problem with Respect - you can open a chapter on Respect and read it all by itself.
I found this book to be very refreshing. The chapter on Respect is a great one. If you want to teach your children Respect, YOU have to respect them and treat them with respect. For example, the book suggests treating your children, as they were guests in your house. It does not mean you have to serve them and drop all the rules. All it means - you will not yell at your guests for spilling a juice on the table and tell how clumsy they (your guests) are. Then why should you yell at your children?
This book is not only for "middle Americans living in a white suburb" - all children of all ages need to have empathy and respect to self and to others. I don't think it's meant to be applied in the classrooms. This book is written for parents raising children - working or staying home. Also, I don't think that the book "makes an assumption that parents are O.K". I think a lot of parents, while they read this book, may revalue their own behavior and the way they handle different situations and their own children.
The review above says: "parents need to be less arrogant and realize that we teach virtues to children by modeling our own virtuous behavior. This is probably the major failing in this book". I disagree with this remark. This is the message of the book - if you want to teach your children the virtues, you have to live your life by them.
Great book.
Useful behavioral approach to raising young children.......1996-05-20
Various virtues are examined from a behavioral/psychological approach.
The commentary in terms of implementation seems to be focused on
a small child or young inexperienced parent. My impression was
the virtues were randomly selected without much order and
connnection. I thought that the reccomendations were applicable to
middle Americans living in a white suburb. The title teachable implied
implied that these might be used in a classroom, It would have been
nice to see a chapter or appendix suggesting how it might be used at
school. After all, the problem that most parents are having is a
lack of time and most teachers spend more time with children
in today's culture than parents. This lack of time was not addressed by the
authors. Finally, the book made the assumption that parents are O.K. and
they themselves don't have room for improving their own virtues. I think
all of us especially parents need to be less arrogant and realize that we
teach virtues to children by modeling our own virtuous behavior. This is probably
the major failing in this book. The writing style seemed choppy and made it
difficult to follow the points of the authors.
