The only problem with Robert Fisher's Escape to the Amalfi Coast is that it's addictive. Fisher is both a writer and a photographer, and his guide to the Italian coast bordering the Bay of Naples is rich in luscious photography and descriptive prose. Starting with the lure of Positano; exploring the sun-blessed coastal towns of Ravello, Sorrento, and Amalfi; and venturing as far as Naples and Capri, Fisher revels in the region's beauty--both natural and manufactured. He highlights the azure seascapes and scruffy mountain hikes, the palazzos where celebrities romp; the bougainvillea-bedecked nooks where lovers spoon; the grand restaurants serving truffles and foie gras; and the archetypal fishing villages, replete with whitewashed cottages, turquoise seas, and weathered dories. Thumb through those pictures, read about those villages, and your only focus becomes how soon you can go and how long you can stay. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration to travel to the Amalfi Coast.......2006-06-11

In the introduction the authors tell us that the purpose of the book is to be both luscious magazine article and guidebook. In my opinion they have done both. However, I have been to the Amalfi Coast more than once, and it is possible that I am swayed by my love of the place.

The photographs in this book are amazing. I love to take pictures of the Amalfi Coast myself. I think that the photographer does a magnificent job of capturing the beauty of the coast. In my opinion the Amalfi Coast of Italy is the most beautiful place on the planet. Once you have experienced it, you will want to return each year.

You cannot use this book as your only source of information to travel to the Amalfi Coast unless you have a large budget that you are working with. The hotels that are referenced in this book are lovely, but they also come with large price tags.

Overall I think this book is valuable as an inspiration to visit this magnificent place. For arranging lodging I would recommend a second book, or a travel agent to get the best bang for your buck. I found a lovely little hotel in Praiano named Onda Verde that is reasonably priced and is easy access to Ravello, Positano, Sorrento, and Pompeii. There is also a boat that leaves from the dock that goes directly to Capri. You can locate this hotel on the web, on send me an email and I will be happy to answer your questions from an American perspective.

1 out of 5 stars Amalfi on your own.......2000-04-01

The photos are beautiful. This is not a typical Fodor's travel guide book. They forgot the "guide". If you want to sit and "uuuu" and "ahh" and want a coffee table book this is good. If you want a guide book...PASS...you'll do better on your own.

2 out of 5 stars Escapes any real information.......2000-02-28

This is not the typical Fodor's guidebook one may have used for previous travel, but rather a compilation of beautiful photos coupled with minimal detailed information. If you are looking for wonderful snapshots of the region prior to travel - this book is for you. If you are looking for a book with even a bit of useful information, i.e. restaurants, hotels, "things to do", weather, shopping, etc. - pass and don't look back - you won't find it here.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic;a book to treasure and display for a life time........1999-08-10

Having traveled on the Amalfi Coast numerous times, being able to open the spectacular pages and relive the memories is something both my husband I will enjoy for years to come. More indepth tour books are available, but nothing can capture the beauty and romance that is in Robert Fisher's book. It will never be out of date and can be treasured for a lifetime.

1 out of 5 stars A bunch of picture postcards with gushy writing........1999-07-15

Esentially this is a book of picture postcards with writing so gushy diabetics reading it should keep their insulin handy. The "practical" information is useful but the lodging recommendations sounds like they were written by the Amalfi Chamber of Commerce. If you've been to Amalfi and weren't happy with your photos, you might want this book. Otherwise, skip it.

In the spirit of his earlier books, Alexander Hamilton: American and Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington, Richard Brookhiser produces an elegant, concise volume drawing on previous scholarship but offering a fresh perspective on four prickly generations of Adamses. Until David McCullough's John Adams became a surprise bestseller, the United States' second president and his descendants seldom had good press. Acknowledging John's essential role in the American Revolution and his son John Quincy's principled fight against slavery, contemporaries and historians nonetheless judged both men poor presidents, characterized by haughty pride and stiff-necked dislike of compromise. Charles Francis Adams, John Quincy's son, lost an almost certain chance to run for president as a Republican in 1872 by disdainfully announcing "that he would reject any nomination that had to be negotiated for;" the most famous book by Charles's son, The Education of Henry Adams (1907), implicitly blames Henry's failure to achieve the prominence of his forefathers on the loss of meaning and coherence in the modern, fragmented world. Tracing the lives and careers of these four men, Brookhiser strikes a balance between their struggles with a daunting heritage and battles with the often unappreciative outer world, identifying "the constant companion of the Adamses" as "the idea of greatness. Am I as great as my ancestors? As great as my contemporaries? Why doesn't the world recognize my greatness?" This proves a sensible organizing principle for his graceful reappraisal of a well-known but not often well-understood family. --Wendy Smith

      Book Description

Richard Brookhiser has won a wide and loyal following for his stylish, pointed, and elegant biographies of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. In America's First Dynasty, Brookhiser tells the story of America's longest and still greatest dynasty -- the Adamses, the only family in our history to play a leading role in American affairs for nearly two centuries. From John, the self-made, tough-minded lawyer who rose to the highest office in the government he helped create; to John Quincy, the child prodigy who grew up amid foreign royalty, followed his father to the White House, and later reinvented himself as a champion of liberty in Congress; to politician and writer Charles Francis, the only well-balanced Adams; to Henry, brilliant scholar and journalist -- the Adamses achieved longer-lasting greatness than any other American family.

Brookhiser's canvass starts in colonial America, when John Adams had to teach himself the law and ride on horseback for miles to find clients. It does not end until after the Titanic sinks -- Henry had booked a room but changed his plans -- and World War I begins, with Henry near the action in France. The story of this single family offers a short course in the nation's history, because for nearly two hundred years Adams history was American history. The Adamses were accompanied by an impressive cast of characters, from George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, to Andrew Jackson and Ulysses Grant, to Teddy Roosevelt. America's First Dynasty offers telling portraits of the great men of our past, and many of the women around them. John and Abigail's great love affair was destined to be repeated by their offspring and offspring's offspring.

As with any family, there was a darker side to the Adams story: many of its members were abject failures. Alcoholism was a familiar specter, and suicide was not unknown. Only one of the four great Adamses was a kind man and father; the others set standards so impossibly high that few of their children could meet them. Yet despite more than a century of difference from John to Henry, certain Adams traits remained the same. In the story of our first and still-greatest family, we can all see something of our own struggles with family, fate, and history.

I saw this on sale and thought it would be a nice 'chaser' after David McCullough's long but excellent "John Adams" that I was just finishing up. I was right, but barely. It's a well written quick review of the four famous and interesting generations of Adamses. It gets high marks for putting a lot into a small package. Also, all four get equal time, which, given the complexities of each, I appreciated. It did not surprise me that Brookhiser took a less flattering (and more mainstream) view of John Adams than McCullough. But when his disparagment stretched to the following three generations I started to wonder what size burr the author may be sitting on. If you buy Brookhiser's somewhat malignant view of these four, it then begs the question how such an irascible hypocritical set of men could be so successful. Which is neither asked nor answered. It was worth the $5 I paid, but I wouldn't pay full price.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging but in want of more depth........2005-11-17

Throughout much of human history, leaders of nations were the children of leaders of nations. Nearly 230 years ago, a radical notion was advanced in a document that would help to form a new republic: that all men are created equal. Many of those American colonists who declared themselves independent of their king wanted not only to limit the power of the executive but to be sure that they had the ability to choose who that executive would be, rather than to have it pass from father to son. Thus, "only three of the first eight presidents produced potential successors, [and] only three of those sons were considered presidential timber." Two of them were named Adams, and one of them would actually become president.

In America's First Dynasty, Richard Brookhiser uses just under 220 pages to paint compelling biographies of four successive generations of a family from 1735 through 1918, an unusually active one that included two presidents of the United States, a public servant of the republic and his state, and a writer. These men lived through tumultuous and eventful times and played roles in them.

The text appears to be well-researched and is quite readable. Quite a lot of history was packed into a very small number of pages; readers with a good understanding of the times and concurrent history will find their understanding of these characters enhanced. Readers who do not know much of the concurrent history might feel rushed.

In groups of three chapters, each of the subjects is considered. Beginning with John Adams, we're introduced to him already in service of his country, at a dinner party in France. We follow him through the highlights of his professional career, and into retirement. We're suddenly focusing on his son John Quincy, as his career starts at an early age with his father, and how he differs from his brothers, who fall prey to the snare of alcohol. John Quincy himself was distinguished, even becoming president, but (much like his father) was hampered by his distaste for political parties and the method of serving in public office.

Charles Francis Adams married well and held various public offices throughout his career, even running as a candidate for Vice-President on the Free-Soil party ticket. Most of his public life was in state and then federal legislature, followed by a diplomatic appointment by Abraham Lincoln. Brookhiser points out that it is in the family of Charles Francis that the family tendency toward alcoholism is broken.

Henry Adams apparently had no taste for public life, preferring instead to become a writer. Much of the biographical sketch focuses on the creation of his best-known work, The Education of Henry Adams. With only his lineage and his wife's suicide to frame the work, we're left wondering what else Henry did. Perhaps this was Brookhiser's intention: to focus on that which each of the subjects left behind for posterity.

Indeed, after the biographical sketches, we're given several more brief chapters that discuss the family habit of keeping a diary and the writing of history. Brookhiser then attempts to frame much of what we have read, discussing such matters as dynasty and legacy. I found the discussion a bit strange because while various Adamses were clearly concerned with the matter of greatness-returning to the question of who are great men-I was under no impression that the Adamses themselves were much concerned with the legacy of the family. I saw only that they were like every other family, wanting what is best for their children, hoping that they will be of good character and do well for themselves.

Putting the discussion in terms of dynasty might not be so strange when viewed through the lens of history. The fact is that John Adams was there from the founding of the country, and his family remained prominent in American life into the twentieth century. Had Henry fathered children, perhaps the chain of prominent Adamses would be unbroken today.

Given this country's interest in the families that produce presidents, it's hardly any surprise that there would be such interest in a family that produced two presidents, especially in light of the fact that the current president is also the son of a president. In all, America's First Dynasty makes for an engaging read, but the extreme brevity of the biographical sketches left me hoping for more.

1 out of 5 stars Reversion to an Old Style of Historical Biography.......2004-02-27

The old style of biography was much like theatre criticism. The more cleverly you could trash the subject, the more you were -- or felt yourself to be -- a winner. When personality peculiarities made subjects as vulnerable to witticism as John Adams' was, we got decades of historical biographers trying to out-acidify the likes of Bernard Shaw. This style had faded significantly by the time David McCullough wrote a biography of John Adams that was unabashedly laudatory...an open fan letter...clear hero worship!

From Brookhiser's race through four members of the Adams family I learned only two things for sure.
      1. The Adams's irritate him.
      2. The old adage that "the things you criticize most in others are usually your own worst fault" appears to be true.

The author's rancor calls and raises the rancor he attributes to his subjects. Reading it was an unpleasant experience with little to no redeeming informational or ideational value for anyone but the author's therapist.

4 out of 5 stars Interestin History of famous family........2004-02-05

"America` First Dynasty" by Richard Brookhiser. Sub-titled: "The Adamses, 1713-1918".
Understandably, this book concentrates on the two presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Their contributions as one-term presidents help to establish democracy in the nascent United States. Brookhiser notes that the two Adamses were the first presidents not from Virginia. Much of what John Adams did became precedents for later presidents.

It appears to me that the author makes the tacit assumption that the reader has a fairly good knowledge of American history, so he casually introduces lesser know subjects, such as the "Know Nothing Party " (Native American Party) and the anti-Masonic efforts in upstate New York. This, of course, leads you to things that you want to examine further, but, on the other hand, inhibits the free-flow of the book.

I think that the author is stretching to consider Charles Francis or even Henry Adams as "greats" who were continuing the Adams "dynasty". I did, however, enjoy Brookhiser's "book review" approach to "The Education of Henry Adams" and Henry's book on Mont St. Michel. Perhaps the next book by Brookhiser would be the comparison of the contributions of the Adamses, the Harrisons, the Roosevelts and the Bushes: all presidents who related by blood.

I listened to the seven tapes as I commuted around Boston; excellent reading by Dan Cashman. It is appropriate to note the name of the town of Haverhill is pronounced as HAV AAAA rill by the natives.. The reader sounded it out and said Have Er Hill, which is logical but not the way it is said in Massachusetts. Further, the hometown of the Adamses , Quincy, is said as "QuinZZZy".

3 out of 5 stars Nice Vignettes, but Pointless Talk of Dynasties.......2003-12-13

I've read all of Richard Brookhiser's biographies of the Founding Fathers (Washington, Hamilton, Morris) and I've enjoyed them all, but I liked this one the least. Brookhiser writes very well and his observations on the character of his subjects are always revealing. He shows how often the best quality in a biographer is not polished prose or research skills, but judgment.

In his book on the four generations of Adams, however, Brookhiser overreaches. Had he kept his focus on the men, this would have been a fine if undistinguished book. But Brookhiser appears to be trying to say something about families, American dynasties, and the difficulties of sustaining greatness. What he wanted to say, I could never quite figure out. The wonderful aphoristic quality of Brookhiser's prose -- that makes him so good when writing some sharp and brief observation -- fails him when he must sustain an argument.

An example of this is when Brookhiser writes in his introduction of the contradiction of an egalitarian society having so many political family dynasties, from the Adamses to Bushes. In noting this, he writes "[An American political dynasty] is the tribute democracy pays to aristocracy." This sounds very nice, but it's meaningless. Most of Brookhiser's comments on the significance of American political dynasties and how the Adamses were able to sustain their greatness fall along this line.

Thankfully, most of this book is on the Adamses, and it is when writing on them that Brookhiser shines. Still, the bad ideas -- even though they don't make up a substantial part of the book -- hang over it. Brookhiser is always interesting when writing about a person, but is not at his best when trying to come up with a conceptual framework to make sense of it all.

THE EXTRAORDINARY SAGA OF A FAMILY THAT FOR OVER TWO HUNDRED YEARS HAS BEEN AT THE CENTER OF POLITICAL AND INTELLECTUAL POWER IN AMERICA.

To imagine the United States without John and Abigail Adams and their descendants would be impossible. The indefatigable Adams family has managed to be close to the heartbeat of America's political and intellectual life across more than two centuries.

Adams: An American Dynasty tells the epic story of the Adamses of Massachusetts. From the great political and philosophical contributions of the founding father, John Adams, to the present generation of inheritors of the family legacy who continue to serve the country, the reader follows the dramatic careers of John's stoutly independent son, the diplomat and sixth President, John Quincy Adams; the pre-Civil War "Voice of Honor," Charles Francis Adams; the famous authors, Henry and Brook Adams; and those who have carried on the dynasty's tradition in giving leadershp in many fields of American endeavor, from scholarship and intellectual pursuits to statesmanship and business.

Chip Correll is in his late 20's and through medication successfully manages schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), two severe, biologically-based mental illnesses. The treatment success rate for schizophrenia is 65 percent, better than most people imagine. Central to Chip's recovery, however, is his faith in God and love for his family. The book is more than an autobiograph: it is a conversation a person with a courageous, optimistic spirit, who confronts an illness which most Americans, because of ignorance and fear, rarely ever engage (Keep in mind that many homeless people suffer from mental illnesses). The book is an expression of Chip's hopes, emotions and individuality. It may not be a best-seller, but it is authentic and interesting. Its most important revelation is that in most respects, Chip, like any person with schizophrenia, is much like any of us. He lives in Florida and owns a condo. He likes dogs. He likes to travel. He is a college graduate and former honors student. Although he must depend on Social Security Disability Income because of the severity of his illness, he volunteers writing press releases and short magazine profiles. He would like someday to work in public relations in the entertainment industry. In this work, he bears witness and speaks truths that we all should consider.

                          Book Description

The bowl is one of the most traditional forms, but contemporary artists who work in wood understand that it has tremendous potential. These 500 exquisite examples, many by pioneering artisans, show just how much the bowl has been “reinvented” by craftpeople all over the world as both an iconic object and as a departure for self-expression. On display are a wide range of woodworking approaches, from chisel to chainsaw to router to bandsaw. Some have carvings on the suface; others feature paint and mixed media; while many more stay close to what nature provided, with the wood simply sanded and sealed. The talented creators include James Prestini, Bob Stocksdale, Rude Osolnik, Mel Lindquist, Ed Moulthrop, Mark Lindquist, David Ellsworth, and William Hunter.

The publisher of this book is also responsible for '400 Wood Boxes,' which I reviewed about a year ago. Both books are juried photographic collections of the work of contemporary woodcrafters. '500 Wood Bowls' is a more eclectic selection composed of almost anything that could be considered a bowl that has some wood in it. This actually is my one complaint about an otherwise very well done collection. In favoring the more modern and experimental work, a great deal of contemporary work that is more traditional, and more focused on the wood got left out.

Don't get me wrong, there's much to admire and wonder at. As a struggling woodturner I find much inspiration here, and a good deal to feel envious about. I've just added a large lathe to my workshop, and bowls continue to elude me. If it wasn't for books like this I would have resigned myself to making very expensive dowels. Here the reader sees possibility and knows that incredibly fine work can be done, whether he be turner, carver, or a collector. Lark books should be congratulated for a very high quality effort at a very reachable price.

This book is beyond awesome!! What a fine collection of bowls, from the most intricate to the outlandishly uncommon. This book has the most incredible collection of innovative turning, carving, and transforming of wood that I have even seen. From intricate inlays to woodburned accents, including segmented to free form with every unbelievable artistic vision and extra-ordinary form of artwork in between. Many common ordinary available woods along with exotic and worldly woods are shown in so many unthinkable showpieces. Every new page turned brings "I can't believe how incredible" to a new height.
Some leave one wondering just "How could this be done?"
If anyone ever needs a book to inspire, motivate, and capture the drive within to create, this is the book.
Every photo is crisp, clear, in color, and close-up. Each labeled with the dimensions and some with the author, and most all with the type of wood used.
416 pages, many with 2 pictures per page. Very professionaly photographed and displayed in an exceptional book.
Some books show bowls, this book inspires greatness!!
Highly recommended and a book to KEEP!

No tool reviews, no "how-to" pages: just pictures of beautiful bowls. Some right off the lathe, and some where the lathe was the tool that created the canvas, and then the artist started to create. Many names I recognized, and lots of new names also. Highly recommended if you want to see fresh ideas from both the known and not-yet-known.

                          Excellent photography throughout.

"Ortho's Guide To Herbs" is one of the most informative books I have ever seen. It contains an alphabetical section of herbs, including roses since roses are edible flowers, that gives comprehensive descriptions of various species. It tells the color of the foliage, the color of the flowers of each species, what they can be used for and all information on how and where to plant them.

Then the books contains other sections on using the dried flowers as sachets, potpourri and many things I hadn't heard of before. It lists which herbs and flowers are edible and which are not, which might be poisonous. It has lists for choosing plants by color. It has many recipes to use the herbs in. The color photographs are magnificent and inspiring for combining different plants to create beautiful gardens with the herbs in addition to having them to eat.

The search for family origin has been a preoccupation of African Americans for centuries, long before Alex Haley's Roots. The task has become easier in recent years, thanks to the advent of the Internet and genealogy organizations. Now add Tony Burroughs's excellent primer, Black Roots, to the list of necessary research tools. Written for the general reader, Burroughs details the best methods and research techniques for mapping family histories, and explains how to navigate the endless labyrinths of myths, stories, omissions, and official records. "Genealogy is important for kids to know their heritage, who their ancestors are and what they accomplished," he writes. "If African American youngsters learn genealogy early enough, it can make a big difference in their lives. Genealogy can not only help kids understand the world but can give them respect for their elders, bridge generation gaps, and heal family wounds."

Using case histories as examples, Burroughs outlines six phases of African American genealogy: oral histories; family research to 1870; the identification of the last slave owner; the research of the owner's background; a trip to Africa; and research in Canada and the Caribbean. Burroughs shows how to research birth, marriage, and death certificates; obituaries; social security records; and even trace histories in other countries and across racial lines. With over 100 illustrations, photographs of real documents, and sample worksheets, Burroughs has put together a comprehensive guide for prospective genealogists. "Now that you have assumed the position of family historian, remember that it comes with responsibilities," he writes. "You are entrusted with the responsibility to trace your family history thoroughly and accurately." After all, your descendents are counting on you. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Black Genealogical Book Written.......2002-01-03

This is the best source for black genealogy that I have read. It was an easy read and hard to put down. Mr Burroughs gave good explanations and used interesting examples. When he introduced a new concept, he explained it thoroughly and gave an example of why or why not to do whatever he was explaining. I learned a lot of good habits from this book, especially about documenting sources. If you are planning to become a professional genealogist, this book is a good beginning and an excellent reference for your genealogy library. I know I am going to buy it and have already referred several others (who are beginners to genealogy) to read it and/or purchase it.

5 out of 5 stars "Trapped"- One Way or Another.......2001-03-09

Black Roots delivers far beyond the stated expectations. Not only is it a one of a kind comprehensive guide for the new genealogist, but serves as a corrective resource for the more advanced researcher. Unlike traditional guides, Mr.Burroughs'largely first person, experiential accounts are so genuine, that he effortlessly, fervently and even humorously, challenges the reader to explore self, family and the human experience in general. He sets forth thirty-four(34) "traps" that the beginning genealogist should avoid, which is a unique feature to a genealogical guide. Traps are interspersed throughout the chapters and reviewed together in the appendix. One can surmise that some of these traps evolved from Mr. Burroughs' early personal blunders. Although the Book's title addresses African American research, his expert advice transcends culture/ethnicity.

Black Roots borders on over-kill; so, readers who shy away from intensity may not get beyond the first twenty-five pages. Mr. Burroughs states that his book is limited in scope, yet he leaves no stone unturned. His dictate for scientific methodology, discipline and tenacity throughout, may be somewhat intimidating to the faint hearted new researcher who thinks genealogy is "merely a hobby". Although he shares plenty of motivational lifts such as "Have fun and Don't give up", some may not see any amusement in the phrase,"the study of..." On the other hand, it would be difficult not to be trapped by Mr. Burroughs' fire and passion for the study of...genealogy.

                                Book Description

Anna Eikenhout (1902-1986) was an honors graduate of Ohio State University, a fine-arts librarian, a skilled pianist, and an avid reader in three languages. Harlan Hubbard (1900-1988), a little-known painter and would-be shantyboater, seemed an unlikely husband, but together they lived a life out of the pages of Thoreau's Walden.

Much of what is known about the Hubbards comes from Harlan's books and journals. Concerning the seasons and the landscape, his writing was rapturous, yet he was emotionally reticent when discussing human affairs in general or Anna in particular. Yet it was through her efforts that their life on the river was truly civilized. Visitors to Payne Hollow recall Anna as a generous, gracious hostess, whose intelligence and artistry made the small house seem grander than a mansion.

5 out of 5 stars A Sometimes Painful Account of Anna Hubbard's Life.......2005-07-28

Recently, my husband and I (along with our little dog) took an 8 week boat journey on the Ohio River. When we got to Big Bone Lick in Kentucky, we heard about a fascinating couple named Harlan and Anna Hubbard who had navigated the Ohio in a Shantyboat and then homesteaded along its shores. Two of the people we spoke to actually had met the Hubbards and spoke of them with great reverence. So it's no small surprise that as soon as I got to a Lewisville, KY and a big bookstore, I looked for works by and about the Hubbards. That is when I discovered Mia Cunningham's book. I bought it and read it as we navigated the same waters Anna had, along with her husband, Harlan. From the start of my river journey, I was interested in women's experiences, finding that so much river lore is from an entirely male perspective. The river world, I found, is largely a man's world; women's hopes, dreams, and heroic journeys are largely forgotten or spun into romantic yarns. So I was happy to find a book that examines river life and homesteading from a woman's, Mia Cunningham's, viewpoint. Cunningham's book breaks apart the Hubbard mystique. Harlan Hubbard is a great source of pride for people living near the Hubbards' old homestead, and rightly so. Harlan and Anna LIVED what we have come to understand as the Thoreau-like existence of simplicity and self-sufficiency. Yet sometimes people's lives get spun into myth and these people are projected as larger-than-life with no character faults. Cunningham's book gently tears at the seams of the Hubbard mystique. Drawing on her memories of the Hubbards and letters she received from Anna (unfortunately, most of Cunningham's own letters to Anna were destroyed by Harlan after Anna's death) Cunningham shows Anna as a woman of intelligence, inner beauty, and strength of character. However, the author also reveals that Anna's life was less than idyllic, exploring Anna's childhood loneliness, her poignant attempts to find love, the jarring effects of her hysterectomy, her altercations with her husband, and her struggle to maintain a balance between solitude and fame as the wife of the artist, Harlan Hubbard. Harlan Hubbard acknowledged that his goals of traveling the river and homesteading would not have been realized if not for Anna--Cunningham's book reveals why this is so, and the extent to which Anna sacrificed for Harlan's sake. ANNA HUBBARD: OUT OF THE SHADOWS is also an intimate exploration of the author's coming-to-terms with her own guilt at having lost contact with Anna Hubbard. This book is at once a tribute, a myth-breaker, and an intimate exploration of the pain we experience when we grow up and away from those we love--and those who love us. This book is highly recommended for those interested in Ohio River history, homesteading, women's studies, and memoir.

                                Book Description

Representations of "the Jew" have long been a topic of interest in Joyce studies. Neil Davison argues that Joyce's lifelong encounter with pseudo-scientific, religious, and political discourse about "the Jew" forms a unifying component of his career. He offers new biographical material, and presents a detailed reading of Ulysses to show how Joyce confronts the controversy of "race," the psychology of internalized stereotype, and the contradictions of fin-de-siècle anti-Semitism.
