4 out of 5 stars Outstanding travel guide.......1997-12-10

The Phaidon guides are profusely illustrated with color photos, and provide details on art and architecture not given in that other essential travel guide, the Green Michelin series. While small (ca. 4 x 7 inches) for home enjoyment, Phaidon's are well built with durable bindings and are easy to carry on trips. When traveling to Germany, the appropriate Michelin and Phaidon guides will add much insight to your trip. It's a pity they are now so hard to find.

                Book Description

Angel Mommy is a moving and compelling account of the nightmarish world of bulimia, one which few people experience firsthand. The author has the courage to allow her readers entrance into this world and the desperate struggle, at times one of life or death, in which she has been engaged for most of her life. A normal, bright and attractive teenager, she gradually slipped into the cycle of binging and purging which became the driving force of her existence, and which threatened not only her life, but the lives of her unborn children. Ultimately, it is the love for her son and daughter which has given her the courage to live, and to write this sensitive and inspiring book, which provides a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

5 out of 5 stars this woman is truly insane, makes being nuts fun.......2002-09-17

I really have to say that this was a very unique book. This woman is funny, she has a lot to give, she does not sugar coat things in the least. She gives a realistic discription of life with bulimia, and does not try to wrap things up in a nice perfect package. There is no sugar coating. This woman is plain and simple crazy, but at least she admits it, is not ashamed of it , and does not make excuses. She is like the typical eating disorder patient. They really do to an extent enjoy the disease. I loved the fact that she slammed the insurance companies. This should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand more about the disease.

                5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2001-02-06

As a mother of three teen-age daughters and someone who has had no experience with eating disorders, this incredible tale of a bulimic mother was a true eye-opener. I encouraged my daughters to read it and after doing so, we were able to have some healthy, honest discussions regarding eating and body-image issues. Ms. Krikorian's raw, honest account of her struggle with bulimia is an inspiring story. I wish her the strength she needs to control this disorder and the hope for a possible recovery.

                5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2001-01-02

I first came across this book in a mothers club. I had heard through my playgroup that she (the author) was in the local papers and believe it or not in the same mothers club! Out of curiosity I read her book, and as a person I was appalled (however the woman in me somehow understood), as a mother I was mortified.

How could she do this!? The answer - bulimia. Here is a all guts no glory book of a person, caught up in an estranged disorder. Linda K. recounts moments in her life that could only be fulfilled through bulimia. This book gives people a REAL insight to the real world of bulimia, I applaud her courage.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-12-27

A Reader from California. Not having a first hand experience with an eating disorder---I found this book very informative and right to the point. The author gives the reader insights that are poignant and with an honesty that made for a clear understanding of what one goes through with this condition. I for one have gleaned a new understanding and compassion for anyone who goes through this. I recommend this easily read book to everyone to gain a first hand appreciation of this wide spread compulsion.

5 out of 5 stars Angel Mommy: a compelling story.......2000-12-23

Angel Mommy was a compelling and accurate account of a person with an eating disorder. The author openly and honestly illustrates the life of a person with a "sickness". This subject, and this book in particular, may strike a personal nerve with some readers. This is really a compliment to the writer. This shows that she was able to depict the true meaning of having this illness in such a way as to bring on a feeling of passion. This is the ultimate goal of any book that touches on such an overwhelming subject.

This book does not glamorize the disease. However, it is not something that is meant to be revered. Books like this are important and necessary to the understanding of this terrible lifestyle.

This is clearly not meant to be a "Professional" opinion. The author openly confesses that she is not a Doctor. However, it is obvious from the input that it accomplishes its goals of bringing the symptoms and affects of this terrible situation to forefront.

This is a great instruction tool for learning to paper piece quilt blocks. Carol Doak does a fine job of taking the quilter step-by-step through the process, and the photos are very well done. I am confident that I can do the project with the paper piecing pattern that is provided in the book. Many thanks to Carol Doak for this fine little pattern/instruction book! I recommend it to any quilter who wants to learn to paper piece, no matter what their quilting skill level is.

All the essential information is here--how to condition the soil, how and where to plant, sprouting schedules, what kind of yield to expect from each plant variety, and harvesting tips--in beautiful, bountiful, illustrated detail; the book's largest section, "Plant Portraits," contains explanations of the many cultivars of each vegetable and herb. If you're a novice vegetable gardener or new to organic gardening and can only afford one gardening guide, this may be your best value.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview book.......2007-06-09

This book is great if you're a beginner gardener, and want just one book to sit down and read that covers all aspects of gardening. You'll want to go on an buy other books that go into more detail on specific topics, but this is a great place to start, and one to keep on the shelf.
It is presented as a gardening book should be - a large hardcover with lots of glossy colour photographs.
                      Chapters are:
                      1) Growing you own
                      2) Getting Started
                      3) Garden Tools & Equipment

                      8) Coping with Garden Problems

5 out of 5 stars Should be called the Coffee Table Encyclopedia of Gardening.......2007-03-10

I am so impressed with this big, beautiful book! The photos are inspiring, and the technical aspects are thoroughly covered. I love the historic background of each vegetable and herb.
I think there is literally everything I ever needed to know about vegetable gardening from seed germination, through care and feeding, to harvest. Detailed charts outline fertilizer, pests, water, soil conditions, and planting and harvest times.

I keep it on my coffee table and flip through it daily just to enjoy the photos and learn some new fact.

You will not be disappointed with this book!

                      5 out of 5 stars Gardners Dictionary.......2006-10-31

I am a new gardener and this book has helped so much! I look everything up in it. RIght down to problems with plant to how much water each plant gets. It has a guide to all plants and great pictures. Also has tips for gardening.

5 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Comprehensive, Excellent Layout.......2002-08-14

Burpee's "The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener: A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically" is fantastic. In addition to what Burpee lists on the back cover of what is inside the book, there are also many easy-reading tables that contain excellent information such as the vitamin(s) that each vegetable contains, different cultivars, plant PH needs, watering needs per week, crop yields, etc. Many interesting tidbits.

The layout is so wonderful, one does not feel overwhelmed with all of the information that is in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Vegatable Gardening Made Really Easy.......2001-11-02

Very similar in content and structure to Ortho's Complete Guide to Vegtables. The difference comes in the experience the writer has growing and maitaining the various plants. I find using both books gives different perspectives for growing and caretaking of plants but conatins the same basic information. For instance the Ortho book has better Garden Setup and maintenance data, and raw data on the various gardening aspects like fertilizer and pest eradiction. The Burpee book focuses on plant and cultivar details a little better. The book is filled with plenty high quality pictures of plants and their fruits using multiple pictures of various cultivars within plant families.
The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.
I consistently flip between both this book and Ortho's book. I find using them in this manner makes the information extracted complimentary and thorough.

I bought this book as an infant caregiver and was disappointed to see that it was all the things I'm already doing with my babies...there were a few different ideas, but overall, not worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for new parents.......2006-04-05

This book was bought due to my concern with, "What do I do with this baby, now that I've got her home?" I've taught fifth graders for many years, but didn't quite know how to begin to "educate" my baby. This book gave me some very quick, easy and simple ideas of games to play to help my child learn. It is also broke down into ages (ie. 0-3 months, 12-18 months, etc.) I definately recommend this book to parents that want to begin the learning process in a fun manner early on.

2 out of 5 stars are you kidding?.......2006-02-23

This book is a waste of money. Most of the "games" that they suggest are so OBVIOUS you'd have to be a complete idiot not to figure these things out on your own. And in that case you have bigger problems than how to entertain your baby. One such "game" goes as follows, 'say things like good night sweet baby or rest, rest, rest your little head'. Are you serious? Gee, I don't think I would have thought of that all on my own. What I want to know is who are all these people that are giving it such a high rating? Well, I guess anyone can be a parent.

                        5 out of 5 stars Finally, a WELL-ORGANIZED idea book!.......2004-01-21

Just as a I said: Finally, a well-organized idea book! I can look up activities to carry out in my classroom by category (Bath and Dressing Games, Going to Sleep Games, etc.); by age (0-3, 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12 months); AND by theme (just for fun, colors, etc.). The activities are simple and clearly described in one page each. But they are not all commonsense ideas, or I wouldn't like this book, and neither would any other experienced under-threes teacher :p. I HIGHLY recommend this book to under-threes teachers and to new parents.

                        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book........2001-12-22

I was shocked to see that someone gave this book 1 star- this book is excellent. It is well organized with games grouped in sequence from age 0-3 months upto 9-12 months. There are about 20 games for each age group. Each page has a different game, an easy to understand description, and tells you exactly what skill(s) it will help develop. I found this book creative and insightful, and had ideas I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I am putting this on my wish list for when I have kids of my own.

                            Book Description

Of the many practitioners of art nouveau in Great Britain, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) has outlasted them all. His work bridged the more ornate style of the later nineteenth century and the forms of international modernism that followed. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, with whom he is frequently compared, Mackintosh is known for so thoroughly integrating art and decoration that the two became inseparable. His work has been honored by a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his designs have proliferated to such an extent that they can be found reproduced in posters, prints, jewelry, and even new buildings. His most important project was the Glasgow School of Art, which still functions as a highly prestigious art school. This glorious building is visited each year by thousands of tourists from around the world. Built over a dozen years, beginning in 1897, the Glasgow School of Art is Mackintosh's greatest and most influential legacy.

This completely redesigned and lavishly illustrated edition of Mackintosh's Masterwork has been greatly expanded and contains newly discovered material about both the early life of the architect and the formative years in which his plans for the School of Art were executed.

An architect, decorator, graphic artist, painter and furniture designer, Mackintosh was known for combining the prosaic with the sumptuous, the severe with the romantic. This collection of essays examines his work in relation to the character of Glasgow and other artistic developments of the era. It also considers his contributions, and those of his wife and associates, to the cultural vibrancy of their city.

                                Book Description

The Glaswegian architect, designer, and painter was a man ahead of his time. His work, as imaginative and original as other artists and architects of the Art Nouveau period, also extended in other directions and became an inspiration to aspiring artists. In his own time and environment, however, Mackintosh was largely ignored. Under Francis Newberry, the director of the Glasgow School of Art, a talented nucleus of artists was established whose work gained recognition throughout Europe. Mackintosh became a draftsman in the firm of Honeyman & Keppie, later becoming a partner and designing the modern Glasgow School of Art. He also designed several modern interiors and the appropriate furniture for them. Mackintosh finally moved to France, where he dedicated himself to painting a remarkable series of original works that have become as highly prized as his furniture pieces and other designs.

In 1923, architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret Macdonald, went on holiday to Roussillon, in the South of France. The holiday became a permanent stay, and Mackintosh began to paint. This work details how the Pyrnes Orientales inspired Mackintosh's paintings.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's (Scottish, 1868-1928) textile designs are not widely known—unlike his architecture, furniture, and watercolors. Fortunately, many of his original drawings for textile designs, made between 1915 and 1923, have survived and are presented in this book, an expanded and revised edition of Mackintosh: Textile Designs (John Murray, 1982). Roger Billcliffe is a noted expert on Scottish art and on Mackintosh in particular. His previous books include Mackintosh Watercolours (Taplinger, 1978); Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings and Interior Designs (Taplinger, 1979), and Mackintosh Furniture (1984).

                                  112 pages, 90 full-color reproductions, size: 9 x 11 1/2". Casebound book with dust jacket.

                                      Book Description

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Glasgow 1868-Londres 1928), Scottish architect and designer, had a great influence on twentieth century architecture and decoration. He graduated from the Glasgow School of Art but soon abandoned the affected Victorian style to embrace one based on simplicity and geometrical shapes. The project for the Glasgow School of Art (1897-1899) established his reputation. This rationalist building juxtaposes long, delicate curves against its rectangular structure; it was extended by adding a library (1907-1909). Mackintosh is also famous for his interior design and furniture creations, which combined traditional Scottish elements with the subtlety of the Art Nouveau movement. His influence can be seen on the designers of the Secession of Vienna, and on the development of the Modern Movement. Despite his success he virtually ceased to practice architecture and turned to watercolor painting.

I just returned from Glasgow and this delightful book - brand new - is being sold for 10 pounds in all the gift shops, at the Mackintosh House and at the Glasgow School of Art. Why are used copies being sold for so much on Amazon?

I ordered this book and received a tiny, 32 page, gift book instead. When I contacted the seller they asked that I return the gift book. 1) I returned the book, was reimbursed for the original order, but was never reminbursed for the postage to return the book. 2) This seller continues to advertise a book they evidently do not have to sell. This is bait and switch. 3) In response to my Amazon A-Z Claim I receive a form email stating I have been reimbursed and my claim is closed. Amazon has just lost a very good customer.

Glasgow is as far North as Moscow. In the time of Charles Rennie Mackintosh it was a tough, smokey, industrial city still living in the shadow of centuries of Scottish Puritanism. Not exactly the most promising environment you would think for an artistic movement that created the works of exquisite beauty presented in this book.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with a tight-knit group of fellow artists known as the Glasgow School, ensured that Glasgow at the turn of the century was an integral part of the international Art Nouveau movement, that was also flourishing in Paris and Vienna. The Art Nouveau movement is now seen as a major watershed in global culture because it was the first major art movement that drew inspiration equally from East and West.

As art evolved away from representative art, spiritual aspects came more into play. As with the Secessionist in Vienna, the German Expressionist, and the French Symbolists, mystical ideas became increasingly prominent, turning much of this art into a kind of ouija-board farce. The ghostly and heavily-symbolic works of the other members of the Glasgow School earned them the nickname of the "Spook School" and saw them marginalized.

But while much of the painting of the time reflects the faux spirituality of misunderstood oriental mysticism and sham seances, Mackintosh's work was distinguished by his deep, instinctive understanding of Oriental aesthetics, expressed unpretentiously in beautiful lines. This gave him the Midas touch at whatever he turned his hand to.

In his painting, posters, stained glass windows, furniture, and architecture, we can see the masterly interplay of straight and curved lines. Although John McKean's rather pedantic text in the book doesn't really emphasise this point enough, what we in fact experience in the stimulating tension between Mackintosh's straight and curved lines, is no less than a fusion of yin and yang, the 'female' and 'male' components of the Universe.

Fighting an uphill struggle in a city that didnÕt really understand his unique aesthetic, Mackintosh still managed to do an impressive amount of work as Colin Baxter's excellent pictures reveal. The greatest fulfillment of his art is in 3-D work, especially his furniture designs, which are notoriously difficult to photograph well, although here Baxter does a good job.

It was with furniture, especially in his many chair designs, that he most fulfilled his aesthetic. While most furniture designers of the period gave into the yin or the 'feminine,' with over-elaborate curves and rich decoration, creating a heavy effect, Mackintosh played these 'feminine' aspects off against the yang or 'masculine' by emphasizing simplicity and straightness, creating an uplifting tension that was not only beautiful in itself but also interacted with the curvature of the human form.

While much of Art Nouveau art and design is forever anchored in the historical period that created it, the work of Mackintosh continues to float with us into the future.
