Best coverage on Leaps.......2007-08-10
This book is written in a very methodical manner with detail coverage of each topic. The book is not one you set down a read in one or two settings but requires careful reading and study. In fact, I have read about 1/3 of the book in depth and proof read the remainder for an overview of its contents. The reason for not giving it 5 stars is I have not applied any of the trade stategies in the book and secondly there are no stock charts in book. Stock charts are an important part of deciding which option trade to apply.
Superb Text on the Use of LEAPS.......2007-07-07
This book is one of the best options texts I've ever read. The material is presented in a clear, easy to understand manner and is less technical than the McMillan books, but is still useful to the experienced options investor.
One thing I like about the book is that it defines the difference between trading and investing and presents strategies for both options traders and investors (though I disagree with the manner in which he differentiates the two groups).
As the title indicates, the book concentrates on LEAPS strategies and presents a number of conservative uses for these instruments. Included in these strategies are stock replacements, covered call writing, spreads and using deep-in-the-money LEAPS as an alternative to margining stocks.
I've been an options investor for nearly 30 years and employ the more conservative strategies mentioned above to enhance the returns on my equity portfolio. While Allaire writes in a manner that is understandable to the novice, I was impressed with the subtle issues and practicle considerations he discusses for each of the strategies.
He also does not over hype the strategies as so many other writers do. This is another reason for giving the book a five-star rating.
Book Description
Written by a prospect researcher, this unique book provides you with tips you need to find your next major gift donors, including step-by-step instructions.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best resources available.......2007-05-13
Prospect Research: A Primer for Growing Nonprofits is one of the best resources available for those who are new to prospect research, for those who need a refresher or for development officers looking for research guidance. It provides the basics (who, what, when, why, where & how)in easy-to-understand terms and format as well as sample forms. In addition, it takes the process one step further with explanations and ideas for prospect management and tracking. All the information you need to build and/or improve your organization's prospect research department operation.
Re-Introduction into Development Research.......2006-05-10
After a 7 year absence, I reentered the field of prospect research in 2003 just when this book came out. I can't say enough how much it helped me reacquaint myself with traditional research methods as well as introducing me to the many new information research, management, and analysis processes that technology has inspired.
Not sure if I'll stay in prospect research, but will definitely keep the book!
Research Delight.......2003-08-04
One of America's most experienced prospect researchers has written the mother-lode on research in fundraising.
Cecelia Hogan's new book is 390 pages of pure value - for fundraisers, researchers, managers and suppliers. Although written primarily for an American audience, its value lies in its cool, concise, cautious approach to research, from day one to the end of your campaign.
Cecelia makes her mark early in the book with a 20-page treatise on the ethics of research. This moral (but not moralizing) tone pervades the book, reminding us to respect our donors and to focus on using "the first philanthropic dollar raised to efficiently identify the next."
The heart of the book is a series of chapters about research techniques. Covering "research math," building a pool of prospects, screening, tracking and managing research, these sections will be of value to researchers from Belfast to Bologna and from Alaska to Adelaide. The techniques that Cecelia describes are applicable in all of these places, even if the sources cited may be American. And experienced researchers will find plenty of value; I found new techniques, new sources, and, new ways of looking at research in this book.
Included in the book is a series of useful appendices including a glossary and models for the paperwork associated with research, as well as more US sources of information and help.
The book is well edited and produced, leaving me with just one gripe - Cecelia's over-use of the first person plural. We don't need to write like that all the time, Cecelia. Good writing can include a passive tense or two.
Whether you are a fundraiser, a researcher or a manager, buy this book and learn all about prospecting from an expert.

Faith on Trial
ASIN: 0805443444 |
Book Description
From AD 33, to the 1950s, to 2005, Walk Back the Cat tells the intricate, page-turning story of Wesley Bright. A corrupt, mediasavvy clergyman, he's out to destroy the Christian church of the God who was never there during his childhood.
Like a cat retracing its steps to return home, the reader must go back to discover the root causes of Wesley's actions.
Connecting the vast time shifts are mysterious characters and elements surrounding the Shroud of Turin, the burial cloth of Jesus. And although Wesley thrives on proving that truth is relative, what will soon transpire is brilliantly absolute.

Walk Back Fundamential Questions..........2006-11-25
Walk Back the Cat had been sitting at my bedside for a few months by the time I picked it up to read it. Finally I put aside my non-fiction, drawn as much as anything by my curiosity about the books name. Then - I could not put it down, reading it at every free moment. With an interesting and penetrating style along with great character development the story unfolded. It carried me into the terrain of the fundamental question... Is this life all there is? While the vehicle is fiction, the reader's opportunity to work through this question for himself or herself is very real. I thoroughly enjoyed this read!
Christian fiction at its best!.......2006-06-20
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (6/06)
In writing, "Walk Back The Car", Pamela Binnings Ewen has asked readers to examine their faith. There is a popular song that asks the question, "who held the hammer." This book asks the question, who betrayed Jesus. She does this with an entertaining style, in a fast paced action and suspense drama .
The phrase "Walk Back The Cat" was not familiar to me. The definition used by the author was, "Just walk back the cat. You know...if you want to get to the root of a thing and really understand what's happening...trace events all the way back to the first one, the thing that started it all. Ever watch a cat find its way home?" One event leads to another; perhaps consequence is a better way of describing it. What I do today will have consequences in the future.
At first it appears that three individual stories are taking place, one having nothing to do with the other. Actually, the stories are intertwined. A child looking deep into the eyes of Jesus as a frightened Apostle stands close by, terrified that he will be seen. A child sees his brother dropped from a tall building, growing up only to live with the guilt of what he witnessed. The Archbishop of a quickly growing church, leading his flock away from Christian morals and down the road to New Age beliefs, "it's all about me". How could three such different stories be related? Ms Ewen finds the perfect way to weave them together in doing so she leads the reader to a better understanding of oneself.
It's hard to read this book and not get involved. I found my face wet with tears as I read the last few chapters, days later I still find the characters fresh in my mind. This book has twists that aid in building the suspense. The characters were more than mere words, they seem to come alive on the pages; I felt that I knew them personally. My favorite character was Hanna with her indigo eyes. If only we all were so ready to listen and serve. I'm glad I read this book. Already I have recommended it to several friends, telling them it was a "must read" for this summer. Pamela Ewan is a gifted writer and I look forward to reading more of her work. This is Christian fiction at its best.

Bitten with Cats -- not Wolves.......2007-09-18
As I was reading this story I kept thinking of Kelley Armstrong's 'Bitten' story - even though this was done with cats it was eerily similar.
I finished reading the book simply to see if the author did anything unique and unfortunately that wasn't the case. It really felt like the author just jumped on the paranormal train and hoped to ride it to the end. There wasn't anything about the story that I'd recommend -- most of the other reviewers have said pretty much everything I'd say.
I admire any person who writes a book and goes through the process of getting published, so kudos on getting that far. It takes a lot of work to write and complete a story and I do appreciate the effort.
Purrr-fect!!.......2007-09-15
What an awesome book!! The first line really grabbed me. I was hesitant at first because so many werepeople books have hit the shelves recently, but I am so glad I picked this one up!! I am a huge fan of the supernatural and I like cat-people stuff even more and this book definitly delivers!! Rachel Vincent is one to watch!!
Faythe is a great heroine. She's tough but she still has a lot to learn. She just wants the chance to have a normal life with normal friends but that proves to be harder than she expects. It starts out with her being attacked by an unfamiliar stray jungle cat and this sets into motion a chain of events that puts her and her family in great danger. Add into the mix two hot kitties vying for her affection, lots of action, cat people politics and kidnapping and you get one effin amazing book!! I can't wait to read the next one!! Me and all the people I've told to read this have lots of theories for how the next one will unfold. Loved it!!!
Rachel, if you read this, MORE JACE!!! Less Marc. He's so pushy. He needs anger management. Poor Jace.
Yikes...I am starting to question if urban fantasy will survive.......2007-09-11
Okay, firstly let me explain myself for the header. I am a HUGE lover of the supernatural urban romance horror noir genre. I love that there is a niche for readers who love monsters, romance, killing, mystery, and comedy all packed together into an imaginative world of the authors creation. But more and more I keep picking up these new authors and new potential series and....they aren't good.
The thing that put the Nancy A Collins and the Tanya Huffs and the early LKH was the fact that it was new. Their worlds were very much their creations (as much as anything creative can be) The female protaganists where strong, deeply flawed, and complex. The male leads shared a lot of those qualities as well and the supernatural element colors their worlds and fills in the gaps. This new crop though....they don't get it. I will state my case briefly and be off:
1. The were cats and their animal identity was murky at best. Did I believe these characters were dual natured? Did I believe these characters were real at all? No, they were vague shadows, the pack leader a generic Jeremy Danvers knock off. The mom was a combination of every homemaker/society wife ever and the male characters were hunky, generic, and interchangeable.
2. The main character! Her flaw is that she is so thoughtless, so self involved, and so childish that she endangers herself. She should be kept at home is there is so much danger around. Her cousin was raped...and she was totally unsupportive. And all the while she is leading on another member of her pack knowing full well what will happen to him if spurned ex lover catches on. She completely blows off human boyfriend (just like in Bitten) But all that would be fine if that was what the author intended, if that was the kind of character that she was ...But she wasn't she was supposed to be, described herself as being, and is spoken to like she is an entirely different character. The new crop of novels just 'tells ' me that they are tough, 'tells' me they are smart and 'tells' me that they aren't in love with the perfectly hunky male lead....
3. The potential.
Were Cats in the Desert: no one had featured them exclusively, outside of Cat People. Sigh.
See this book had potential, and i read it all the way thru all though it was difficult (long layovers will help with that) The book was too long, the plot too thin, the main character too callous...
and she wasn't tough, or sassy, or intelligent.
but she told us she was.
TSTL heroine, Derivative of Bitten.......2007-09-09
Faythe Sanders is a were kitty with a problem. She is one of the few females of her species (ala Elena), and her father sends her ex-boyfriend Clay... Oops... Marc to escort her home. What nefarious reason does Daddy have to do this? He wants to protect her and keep her safe? What an awful guy! The problem is Faythe broke up with Marc and broke his heart and would rather stay at school and be yet another over-educated nitwit than return home and help her people. When Faythe does get back to the ranch, she finds herself the center of a love triangle between Marc and Jace two of daddy's hot bodyguards. Is Faythe happy with the situation? No! She must make everyone miserable, including her father, her brothers, and her mother. Is she satisfied then? No! She must assert her independence AT ALL costs, even if it means risking her life and everyone else's' in the process.
Seriously what the heck? I thought characters like Faythe belonged in 1970's harlequin novels. She never gets off the Self Pity train and her bellyaching about her independence constantly (while consequently relying on her parents to pay for her college education and future grad school) left me cold. Seriously this girl never works a day in her life...She is a total spoiled brat... This would be somewhat more palatable if she changes in the story... But it doesn't happen. Not only is she spoiled but she is TSTL at times. Yikes!
Ironically, I LIKED the male characters. But even they came off as TSTL for their utter love of Faythe which seemed undeserved and frankly a little hard to believe. Considering how she jerks them around.
Many plot elements reminded me of Armstrong's work, down to the Kitties not wanting their blood tested because it was `different' to the alpha cat having a cage in his basement. I agree with the other reviewer who said the ecology of the were animals in the story remind me more of wolves than large cats. Frankly I am surprised so many males would be content with a monogamous arrangement of their only females when there are so many young healthy men running around single.
Overall this novel which started off promising ended up being a disappointment. Faythe was annoying as a heroine could be and the similarities to Armstrong's work were difficult for this reader to choke down.
I love this new author.......2007-09-09
Vincent come out of the gate running..I bought this book last week and had to start it, I started yesterday and I am done today. I could not put it down!!! I can't wait for book 2 Rogue to come out next year..I loved the plot and her time with the characters and I love the love triangle with Jace and Faythe and Marc!!!!Keep them coming Rachel!!

Not as interesting as it looks.......2007-01-10
I was disapointed by this book. The cover is great and drew me to buy it but the contents is a bit all over the place and I'm not sure what the purpose of the book is. There aren't really any projects and the design foundation information is a bit hard to follow. I must admit that I haven't picked it up again since looking at it the first time.
Wonderful concept, badly written.......2006-05-25
This introduction to design principles for artists working in polymer clay is a useful book, and I learned a lot from it. McGuire discusses the elements of design, including value, color, form, shape, line, space and texture, and addresses more briefly design principles like balance, pattern, rhythm, emphasis, and unity. McGuire follows each section of the book with an exercise designed to allow the reader to experiment with the element or principle being discussed, and illustrates each section with excellent photographs of polymer clay art that uses that element or principle particularly effectively. Between the exercises and the photographs, I was able, as a design newbie, to gain some understanding of McGuire's topics. However, McGuire's writing is so muddy and vague that I learned almost nothing from the text itself. Indeed, some of the paragraphs--especially those defining the key concepts--were so unclear and confusing that I was completely unable to discern what McGuire was talking about. The editor of this book really fell down on the job!
So, while this book did help me get started thinking about the elements and principles of design, I will have to turn to other authors to gain a richer understanding of these ideas.
Gorgeous book.......2006-05-15
This has some of the most wonderful artists. And good examples of their work. Just lovely a favorite.
My favorite polymer clay book..........2001-08-08
Barbara McGuire's Foundations in Polymer Clay Design is a must have for every polymer clay artist. It has exceptional information to enhance one's design knowledge and how to apply this knowledge to polymer clay artwork. The photos are stunning and best of all, show evidence of today's talented pc artists. Barbara's examples of each design concept and how they apply to working in polymer clay are valuable to the serious artist.
This book has several wonderful easy-to-try projects that demonstrate the chapter's concept. These lessons help to satisfy the reader who is looking for practice, but may not be 'enough' for the person who is simply looking for a book of how-to projects.
McGuire's book will remain an excellent reference for the artist and one where new lessons can be learned each time the book is taken off the shelf to reread. Five Stars!!!!
A Well-Rounded Approach to Design.......2001-07-30
Barbara E.McGuire's 'Foundations in Polymer Clay Design' is a great addition to both a beginner's and a more advanced artist's library, however, note that it is not a project book. The technical aspects of the clay are briefly discussed in the first chapter. The rest of the book focuses on the aspects and elements of design. Invaluable discussions on color, line, form, movement, etc., are contained within its chapters; as well as a stunning array of polymer clay artwork captured in beautifully executed photograpy.
While you will find plenty of inspiration gazing at the gallery of work in 'Foundations', you'll find little if any discussion of the techniques used in making them. The information offered is to be used as a guideline for refining your own unique style.
Working in polymer clay is more rewarding now that I've read (and reread) this book; it has served as a muse and a mentor. My work is more professional, more diverse and visually pleasing; my practice far more organized. The absense of step-by-step instruction does not limit the reader but helps them to expand by calling upon them to apply what they have learned to their own ideas.
This title is a perfect complement to Donna Kato's 'The Art of Polymer Clay', which is overflowing with technical instruction made beginner-friendly. I highly recommend a newcomer to the medium purchase both titles.

Book Description
A distillation of the author's more than 40 years' experience in growing and hybridizing, this book is devoted to every aspect of these lovely, exotic irises. The author was the first to introduce tetraploidy in Siberian and Japanese irises and has bred, registered, and introduced almost 100 new Siberians.
Customer Reviews:
Beardless wonder..........2001-06-02
The book THE SIBERIAN IRIS by Dr. Currier McEwen is the most comprehensive work on this flower imaginable. Well written and easy to understand, even for the beginner. Dr. McEwen is one of the most respected and foremost hybridizers of these beardless irises. Nothing has been left out. The history, the culture, favorites, sources, showing, judging, hybridizing, registering and introducing a new cultivar, etc. The photographs are wonderful and the illustrations by Jean G. Witt are dynamic and extremely good. The only think I would have asked for is even more photos! This is an excellent gift choice for someone who is interested in these easy to grow but exotically beautiful flowers.
Book Description
The determining factor in whether a child between the ages of six and seventeen enjoys athletics is his or her parents -- not the sport, coach, or team. Yet, parents are often unaware of how their behavior and expectations impact their child's experience.
In 101 Ways to Be a Terrific Sports Parent, Dr. Joel Fish, a sport psychologist who is also the dad of three young athletes, shares both his clinical expertise and practical experience to help parents develop a deeper understanding of the many issues that surround the young athlete. For athletes of all skill levels, from Little League to high school, Dr. Fish discusses how to:
Help your child reach his or her full athletic potential
Develop strategies to deal with competitive pressure
Know if you're too involved or not involved enough
Interact successfully with your child's coach, and more
With insights into the different developmental and self-esteem issues facing girls and boys, information on parenting a superstar athlete, and special tips for single parents, 101 Ways to Be a Terrific Sports Parent will help any parent make sports a memorable and happy experience for their child.
Customer Reviews:
If you think you need this book... you do........2006-12-05
The conclusion of this book is the best part, but I found that I needed to read the '101 ways' to really understand it. I suggest you scan the table of contents to see if what leads you to look into this book is addressed, and just buy it if any are even close. If you think you need this book.... you do. Buy it, read it.
Much Needed.......2006-07-28
This is a much needed book in my opinion. I want to do everything I can to help my child. Also recommended: 'Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Your Nonprofit Corporation' by Ms. Cellaneous, The Unknown Attorney, for a look at kids sports and booster clubs from a legal and protective (of your kids) viewpoint.
Outstanding!.......2003-11-16
Dr. Fish's book is truly outstanding. This book has brought me and my children closer together and I would highly recommend other parents to read it. My attitude toward my children and their athletics has changed and I have a new outlook on being a positive sports parent.
A Must-Read For All Sports Parents.......2003-10-24
Every parent with sports-playing kids needs this book! I saw Dr. Fish on The Today show two months ago and I really liked what he had to say about not pushing kids too hard so I got the book. Since then, I've given a copy to two parents on my daughter's soccer team and insisted that my husband (who gets carried away with our son's hockey to read it). This book has validated me in my decision not to allow my daughter to be on the travel team right now. (We have two other kids with activities so the travel has been an issue.) I like how he offers advice on how to help your child and evaluate your child's experience. This is just an overall great guide for parents whether or not there's a problem or issue.

Giving an important artist her due.......2002-07-20
In this wonderfully written book, Bloemink traces the life and work of one of the most fascinating women artists of hte 20th century. I was so excited to find a serious, comprehensive study of Stetheimer's work, and the late 19th Century European/American context in which it was written. Bloemink addresses the somewhat stiffling environment of the artist's family, and explores how her artword provided an escape while at hte same time chronicling her times with a perspicacity not seen in work by her contemporaries. An early feminist in her refusal to fulfill the roles forced on women of her time and social station, Stettheimer stands out by not using men - as spouse or gallery promoter - to further her career. An amazingly creative, analysis with sensitivity and depth. It is also interesting to learn about a woman who was socially reticent, traditional, and very private, who nonetheless carved out a significant art career. In many ways a more interesting artist than her contemporary and acquaintance Georgia O'Keeffe. Includes interesting discussions of sexuality, the role of theater, interior decoration, race and gender relations among the priviledged classes of New York during the decades after the first World War: this is not a simplistic or essentialist study but one that explores the subtleties and complexities of these issues from within the context of the times. A wonderful read for anyone intersted in women's studies or art during the period from 1890s to the 1940s.
Genius, yes, but let's not forget spinster.......2002-01-28
I'm reading this now, and find myself unutterably depressed by the tone of Ms. Bloemnik's writing. It's obvious she researched this dedicated, dynamic, gifted painter and early feminist, but the book so far is pepperred with stupid, defeatist comments about why Florine never married- even as it cites Florine's own dislike of marriage in favor of her career and her vision of herself as dedicated to painting.
Check this out:
"Indeed, as with certain male artists, most of Stettheimer's energy went into formulating and creative work. It is not clear to what extent this was the result of an overwrought nineteenth century modesty, a desire to remain perpetually a young maiden (not married, childless), or anger against men and fear of marriage because of her father's desertion."
Or maybe, say, she wanted to paint instead of having children. It was, after all, the late 1890's. Ms. Bloemnik says that Ms. Stettheimer considered herself a feminist and a serious professional painter and that she thought marriage and children would hinder her ability to paint, but in sentences like the gem I've just quoted, she makes it clear that it must, after all, have come down to neurosis.
I'm a woman artist, and I'm inspired by Florine Stettheimer, but I'm also really scared that someone like Ms. Bloemnik, (who clearly thinks she is a feminist) will promote my work. It seems like Florine Stettheimer got more of a break in her own time than she did in this one.
MS. Bloemnik, by the way, has written all the books on Florine Stettheimer, and is now the new director of the Guggenheim Los Vegas. And she recently wrote about Barbara Bloom, Lisa Yuskavage (!), and Laurie Simmons. God help them.
Left wanting to know more of who this fanciful artist was..........1998-11-15
Just finished this book last night and am left wondering who this incredibly gifted, decorative woman was. Her sister Ettie remains in my mind a jealous monster for having taken her scissors to much of Florine's personal papers and diaries...this is such a shame as we will never know the personal, driving force behind this talented woman. Reading about Florine felt more like reading about a vauge ghost...I just know there was so much more. The author did her best to unearth and explain this woman and her art but it felt more like I was reading someone's academic assignment, a master's theisis. However I am glad that this book was written....the pictures inside are incredible and allow a glimpse into the magical quality of this very important female artist the lovely Florine Stettheimer.
