Nice glossy coverage.......2005-04-02
I like both kinds of travel books: the detailed, picture-free, historically rich style of Blue Guide or Rough Guide, as well as the picture-loaded, site-focused books like Eyewitness or Insight. This new Hatchette Vacances series definitely falls in the latter group, but it seems to have much more information than your standard Eyewitness guide [much more than the flimsy Insight guide]. The individual towns from the Herault to the Aude are covered generally in about 2 pages each, with longer sections for the larger towns like Narbonne, Perpignon, etc. It doesn't have much depth in the descriptions, nor does it have much historical coverage, but it is broader in terms of the number of villages that it covers than the more detail-oriented books such as Rough Guide or Blue Guide [caveat: I like both of those books as well].
There's also a nice introduction to the region and the many different features and cultural opportunities that it provides in the first third of the book. The information again is somewhat light, but nonetheless useful.
However, the Vacances series is small, handy, covers and visually reveals a bunch of places all over the region, and has some information that isn't covered at all in the detail books [e.g.; I didn't know the Ricard plant was so close to Agde and Pezanas] so deserves 4 stars as far as I'm concerned. And not just because I like Ricard! ;)
I am sending it back.......2002-07-12
I really don't like this kind of travel book and was very disappointed when I received it. It skims over the most obvious tourist attractions of each town filling half the pages with photos (of things like a lion at the zoo in that town - like we can't all picture what the lion looks like).
It's probably a personal preference - if you like LP and Rough Guide I'd say this is way too glossy and general for you.
Hachette & Michelin: Unbeatable.......2001-02-10
We buy every guide to the Languedoc Roussillon that we can, to stock the shelves for renters in our French vacation home. There are two indispensable volumes: the Michelin green guide, which leaves no historical stone unturned; and this new Hachette guide for the region. The Hachette guidebooks bill themselves as "France by the French." The Languedoc guide is exceptional fare: it has enticing overviews of food & drink specialties, restaurants, wines, home furnishings (!), castles, other history (this area has been settled FOREVER), sports, festivals and the arts. There are a dozen preplanned itineraries you can adopt. And an extraordinarily rich level of reporting, with magnificent photography. My test for a new guidebook is this: Does it tell me something new about a place I thought I knew? The Hachette does just that, over and over.

"Why not the best?" is the best introduction to Carter.......2000-10-14
This book is the campaign biography which helped elect Jimmy Carter in 1976. He takes the title from the question Adm. Rickhover asks of all naval cadets, 'in your life was there ever a time in which you did less than the best?' He would follow up the question with "Why not the best?" as a way to focus young men, including James Earl Carter, on striving for exellence. The book outlines in detail what Carter would later refer to as his "sources of strength." This book is a must read for those who feel Jimmy Carter is a model of public service, an outstanding peacemaker, and our best ex-president.
Why Not The Best.......1999-12-09
I am writing a review simply because the other person's review was so obnoxious and mean-spirited. Carter was the most honest and decent man we have ever had running the country, at least in my lifetime. And he is probably doing a lot more with his life right now than that reviewer ever will. Shame.
A political campaign book.......1999-10-01
This is a reprint of the book originally issued before the 1976 presidential campaign, and after all these years, is a very painful reminder of the promise and then the failure of the Carter presidency. In office, Carter proved to be a petty, self-righteous little man who was overwhelmed by the presidency. He was not a leader- he was a bureaucrat. His failures as President caused economic turmoil and international loss of respect for the United States. The book should be read for its irony only.

Book Description
This book talks about achievement that were successfully achieved. It also gives examples of skills put together by myself to help me to function out into the world. This book talks about my life spent in college.
Book Description
Roger Pocock's life reads like a fairytale full of adventure. A childhood cut short to go to sea, then service with the Canadian North West Mounted Police in 1885, followed by stints as a war correspondent, Yukon gold miner, South African army scout, and "missionary to hostile tribes." In between he formed the Legion of Frontiersmen, organized the original World Flight by airplane and was the first person in history to ride the length of the infamous Outlaw Trail. Though Pocock enjoyed a reputation for dangerous living, his observations on horses were praised by the leading thinkers of his day. Professor Cossar Ewart, whose study on the origin of horses drew positive praise from Charles Darwin, wrote the Preface to this book.
Book Description
Pregnancy and the special time during the first year of a baby's life is a time for nesting and nurturing-and the perfect time for an expectant or new mother to take up knitting.
In Knitting for Two, renowned knitwear and textile designer Erika Knight presents a delightful collection of knitting patterns for soon-to-be and new moms and their babies. Knitters can choose from 20 easy-to-knit projects in a variety of color schemes. There are knitting projects using easy-care yarns in soft neutrals accented with baby blue, pink, and green; or fine yarns like cashmere in pastel shades of pink, blue, green, taupe, and cream. Other projects use vibrant colors like lime, fuchsia, and red. The patterns for mothers-to-be are stylish, feminine, and sexy and include a long-sleeved, chunky rib wrap; a cardigan with chiffon rose decoration; and a long twinset. The baby patterns are sized for premies and 0-12 months, and include a round-neck sweater with shoulder buttons and matching pull-on pants, a lacy bonnet, and a pixie-style hat with earflaps.
Customer Reviews:
Knitting for (size) Two! Booo!.......2007-05-22
What is wrong with knitting designers today that they think that normal or even large size women don't want to knit and wear beautiful things when they're pregnant?
The largest size in this beautifully photographed book is a 38" chest. I am so frustrated that even though the patterns are gorgeous I don't even WANT to fiddle around with trying to size them up -- I shouldn't have to!
Not a single woman or baby of color? Boo!
The patterns are absolutely stunning, I must say. I likely will take the time to size up the ones I like for me and the baby patterns are sweet and useful, things I would actually make for this little one I'm cooking now (due in October 07!). However, I did find it frustrating to not see whole photos of some of the items, especially blankets. That papoose is the sweetest thing ever, I'm sure... I could tell you for sure if I knew what the whole thing looks like!
I wish knitting designers would look outside and see that women come in a variety of shapes, and make their books relative to real women. It's getting very, very old.
Where are the schematics?!.......2007-05-17
I think it should be a law in the world of knitting books that patterns have schematics or at least a non-artistic photo of the item. There are some beautiful and seemingly simple patterns in this book, but no schematics. Especially for something like the papoose pattern that appears to be simple, you don't even see a photo of the full finished product to get an idea of how it finishes. I'm a semi-experienced knitter, but I need a little visual help and that's what keeps me from giving this book a better rating.
Very Limited Sizing.......2007-03-02
I can't find a maternity sweater in this book that has bigger than a 38 inch chest. According to the standard size chart, that is a MEDIUM! If you wear larger than medium, you will have to alter the pattern significantly to fit. That is truly ridiculous-- the sizing should go up at least to XL, and preferably larger. The book ought to be called "Knitting for Two (As Long You Don't Weigh Over 98 Pounds)". If I am going to alter the pattern so much to fit me-- why bother? I might as well just design my own. And less experienced knitters who don't know how to size up will just be out of luck.
Love this books and designer.......2006-06-20
This is a fantastic book of great maternity and early motherhood clothes and stunning baby clothes as well. The only thing to note is to not order both this title and baby bloom as they are the same book under a different title and cover-otherwise inside they are exactly the same book.
This book has some very quick and easy little baby items which can be completed in just a few hours through to more complex designs. I have made 3 of the designs in lesss than a week. The sweater from pages 20-21 took less than an evenings tv to make and looks great. The chunky zip up jacket from pages 32-33 which was very fast and easy and will layer up over the sweater for extremely cold weather. The lacy bonnet from pages 92-93, because i just couldn't resist it( hopefully 1 of the mums from playgroup will have little girl) and I have started the chunky tweed cardigan from pages 61-63 although I am making it in wool instead of cotton. This is all in less than 1 week so they are certainly quick and easy projects although there are others which would take longer. I would recommend this book to ANYONE who likes to knit for babies and the patterns for maternity are so stunning I will knit some for myself even though I am definitely not pregnant-LOL.
Beautiful book, and great projects too!.......2006-03-29
The photography inside this book is just stunning! And there are so many of the projects that I want to make. Plus, the designers have chosen some unusual colors for some of the baby projects which are incredible! Who would have thought of the color eggplant for a baby blanket, but WOW is it gorgeous! The maternity designs are elegant, and different. I plan to have another child soon, so I know I'll get a lot of use out of this book.

Beautiful Easy Flower Gardens.......2003-04-29
This host of "the Natural Garden" on Northeast Public Radio has developed a low-maintenance approach to gardening that allows him to have a beautiful garden with interesting plants - and time for his family too.
This easy-to-read book starts with the very basics of gardening - the site, the soil and the tools a new gardener will need and then guides the reader in developing gardens for a wide range of sites. He explains how to design a garden, choose annuals and perennials for the site and each season, and then how to maintain that garden through the year. There are good source lists and a useful reference section.
The writer has a direct approach that is readable and useful for the novice gardener. The book is published by Rodale - a long-established and reliable publisher of gardening books.
Just Like On the Radio.......2000-04-14
As a longtime fan of Larry Sombke's occasional stint on WAMC's "Vox Pop" program, I was thrilled to find out about his books. Just like his radio self, Sombke's prose is smooth with clear explanations and illustrations accessible even to those of us with purple thumbs...
Book Description
The first complete guide for couples to the most popular method of natural childbirth. Destined to become the standard book on Lamaze, covering everything from the moment of pregnancy to the difficulties of adjusting to parenthood.
Customer Reviews:
Very informativee.......2007-09-09
I really like how this book covered ALL the options we have during labor and delivery. It really put me at ease.
I also very much liked the different breathing and relaxation techniques provided.
Nice for "repeat mom's" but VERY outdated.......2007-08-12
I took Lamaze class with my first pregnancy and found it very informative and helpful. Although when it came down to the process I was overwhelmed with pain and lost control. With this second pregnancy, I wanted to review the Lamaze method so that this time I would know what to expect and have the tools with how to deal with it. The Lamaze class could not fit into my schedule so I looked to books. This book was nice for a mom who is just reviewing the techniques. It is VERY outdated and I believe even scary for the first time mom who does not know what to expect.
So I think this would be a fine book to review the Lamaze method, but that is about all it is good for!
great read!.......2007-08-03
This book is better than I expected. My advice would be to start reading well in advance of lamaze classes. Sometimes the breathing seems complicated. But when you've read it and then see it in class, it will all come together. I love the quotes from actual patients. They help you to understand it will be different for eveyone but you can adjust. I feel extremely confident and ready for natural childbirth!
Good Book.......2007-07-17
This book, in combination with the dvd "Having Your Baby! A Complete Lamaze Prepared Childbirth Class" are perfect together. It is a good way to review as both follow much of the same information and set up basically the same way.
I read another book written by Dr. Lamaze himself that was a great start to understanding the psychoprophylaxis method and Lamaze in general.
Don't buy this book unless you are having a baby in 1987!.......2007-07-13
I was in a hurry (due with my 2nd next week) and wanted a refresher on the Lamaze breathing techniques and thought this book looked good and would offer some additional interesting information. If I had noticed it was from 1987 I wouldn't have bought it. Not only are the breathing techniques not straightforward, some of the general information is outdated. I live in small town and our hospital has not used forceps in delivers for years due to the risks. In addition, the part about giving your baby water the first few days - you should never give your infant water under 6 months of age - ask a pediatrician that's current, not old school. I stopped reading . . . buy at your own risk.
Customer Reviews:
Let the Story Take you there. .......2007-06-14
It is debateable whether or not Beryl's husband helped to write this story. He was a writer and must have inluenced her in some ways. However, there are books other than "The lives of Beryl Markham" that give insight to the depth of his inluences upon her writing and also present Beryl's opinion on this subject. In Beryl's "African Stories" compiled by a woman who interviewed Beryl it becomes clear that Raoul's writing style did not match the writing style of this book. Raoul focused on scandal and tried to write his own story about Beryl in which scandal played a large part to help make the book popular. In Beryl's opinion the scandals of her life were unimportant details. Horses and African life were her truths and the details surrounding these truths were what she wanted to convey to the world. She used artisitc liscence. One surely should be able to to use this skill if one is writing about ones own life. Stories are not required to be as reality shows are today. The book is not titled "West With The Night A True Story". It was not meant to be taken with a grain of salt. It was meant to immerse the reader, take them to a different place if you will and make them feel as though they lived it. Allow the book to be what it is, enjoy the fine writing and let it take you to where you may have never been before. Read further and discover more. It is a facinating mystery touched by so many factors many of which we may never know because the one person who could tell us whether or not she wrote the book is dead and gone.
A beautiful but often fictional account of a great life.......1999-05-17
I've recently read the "autobiography" "West With The Night" for a Hight School history class. While I found Markham's book to be a beautifuly spun story of growing up in colonial Kenya and life in the early 1900s, this book left me with more questions than answers. On digging deeper, I found that this book was written by her third husband, Raoul Schumacher. Also, I found that many interesting and scandalous parts of her life had been omitted from this historical tale. However, these things do not change the fact the "West With the Night" is a completly enrapturing tale of a very strong, determined woman. I only advise that you take this story with a grain of salt; and then go read the book "The lives of Beryl Markham" by Errol Trzebinski to get the real deal.
A life-changing read-Even better than Out of Africa!.......1998-08-08
Beryl Markam's controversial "West with the Night" gives a vivid, personal view of life in colonial Kenya. A geat aviator and race horse trainer, Beryl Markham gives new life to women everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Must read for anyone who considers themselves a writer.......2007-10-11
This book is a hidden treasure. Markham offers a rich history of her life and the western influence upon east Africa, the land where she grew into a woman. Her writing style takes descriptive to a new level. This is an excellent book for readers of thirteen to ninety years of age. Enjoy!
A Classic..........2007-07-27
Quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. West with the Night transports readers to a real life era of adventure (the 1930's in particular) in an Eastern Africa that scarcely resembles the region today. Markham's beautifully described tales of her adventures as a bush pilot make this one of those books that is hard to put down at the end of the day. As for her writing style, Ernest Hemingway's comment that she "Can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves writers" sums it up. I highly recommend this novel.
VERY INSPIRING!.......2007-07-05
This is one of the best books I have ever read! The writing is superb and colorful. The author takes you on a journey through Africa. Also, I found this book to be very spiritual. Beryl Markham was an accomplished pilot and very courageous and ahead of her times. I savored every word!
An adventurous life.......2007-07-02
Wonderfully written story of Beryl Markham's life growing up in Kenya East Africa and her career as an aviator. You can almost picture Markham sitting on the veranda at the Muthaiga Country Club telling tales of high adventure. It has been questioned whether she actually wrote the book or whether it was written by her third husband Raoul Schumacher. Either way it is a great story of a fascinating woman. Well worth the read.
MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME.......2007-06-30
AFTER READING THIS BOOK THE FIRST TIME, IT WAS SO GOOD I READ IT AGAIN 5 WEEKS LATER. THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. I READ MORE THAN A BOOK A WEEK PLUS SEVERAL EVERY WEEK ON CD. I HAVE NEVER FOUND ONE TO COMPARE TO THIS.
GREAT

Most interesting view of 18th century Ireland.......1999-01-22
This is a very interesting history of 18th century land ownership in a small town in the west of Ireland. The author is a teacher and researcher whose wife is from Monivea. The book traces how land was acquired by the favored class and how they in turn treated the native Irish citizens. It will give the reader a very intimate look at life in Ireland during the 19th century and the relationship between the landowning class and the local citizenry. Anyone who loves Irish history, has Irish ancestors, particularly from the Galway area, will enjoy this gem of local history.
