5 out of 5 stars A deliberate, power hungry G.W........2002-02-22

Paul Longmore has written an excellent book for the serious George Washington scholar. George Washington is a difficult man to understand. After reading five books on the man, along with several published books and articles on the Revolutionary War, Federalist Period, and biographies of other people who were active in Washington's days, I still have a hard time grasping why such a diverse group of people universally looked up to and respected Washington. Edmund Morgan's book, "The Genius of George Washington" helped me to understand how Washington wielded power once it was attained, and this book helps to fill in the gaps as it describes how George Washington worked his way toward greatness.

Longmore's argument in the book is that George Washington was FAR from a minor player in his rise to fame. It wasn't through a series of coincidences or through fate that Washington became the very embodiment of the American Revolution and Federalist Era. Longmore argues that Washington had, in his youth, an insatiable lust for power...but would only seek to achieve it through socially respectable means (highly developed interpersonal skills didn't hurt, either). It is through an examination of what constitutes "socially respectable," Washington's writings, and examining the change in his tone as he matures that Longmore bases his premise. In my opinion, he does a very good job of it. His arguments are strong and backed up in an extensive end-notes section. The only problem I have with his research is that I would have liked to see Longmore's view on two major incidences that happened in Washington's early life and how they affected his rise to fame: the death of his older brother/patron Lawrence; and his marriage to the filthy rich widow, Martha Custis. In all, Longmore has written an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone who would like to begin a serious study of the early life of the "First in War, First in Peace, First in the Hearts of his Countrymen."

By the way, this is not a cradle-to-grave biography of Washington, but follows his life from birth until about the time he takes command of the Continental Army.

          5 out of 5 stars Washington, a Complex Character.......2000-11-28

Paul Longmore's biography of George Washington is a superb book. It portrays Washington as a complex Virginian. Neither a stone-like figure nor an unread hero, Washington becomes an interesting and even vulnerable leader. Well written, Longmore's book is a must for people interested in Washington and in colonial history.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the origins of the Washington image.......2000-04-21

Paul Longmore's book, "The Invention of George Washington" is a wonderful book about the Washington that people have come to know over the years. Longmore looks at Washington's life chronologically and compares it with the image of Washington as the Father of Our Country. Longmore shows that one of the most important people in shaping this image was George Washington himself. Washington was constantly concerned with what others thought of him. He always lived his life as if he were on a stage with the whole world was watching. At many of these points, they were watching. Washington was setting the model for future leaders of the United States as Commander-in-Chief, and ultimately as President. Behind this image of a man doing the best for his country, however, is a man of ambition. Especially as a young man during his days commanding Virginia troops in the French and Indian war, Washington strived for recognition among his fellow colonists and from the British regulars that he was forced to serve under. As Washington matured, he was more successful at curbing this ambition. It was during these years that Washington built his reputation and became known as the Father of Our Country.

5 out of 5 stars This Father and Mother are a Church Bishop and Bishop's Wife.......2001-07-17

Through "Dancing in a Wheelchair" United Methodist Bishop and Etta Mae Mutti pour out their own hearts as parents who lived the experience of HIV/AIDS with two of their three sons and saw them die. This family's story cannot deal with AIDS without homosexuality. Every emotion impacts their pensive dialogue: When the two sons individually come out, the father and mother go behind their own doors to express shock and anger, and to weep; yet, affirm love for their sons. Etta Mae Mutti storms with disbelief, and finally a commitment to action, because her church does not treat gays with equality. Where will a Bishop turn for support in his personal pain that's a controversial issue in the church? In dialogue format these parents reveal many experiences and truths any family might encounter when HIV/AIDS invades, but with profound impact coming from a Bishop and Bishop's wife. The book is powerfully enlightening regarding the physical and mental stages and the stresses of the disease, AIDS. Despair rips parents' hearts when this illness worsens. The dialogue graphically paints the ugly portrait of AIDS. Questions loom: How to let adult children make their own decisions when they're dying? Should we make him come home? Families who have persons who are gay or those who suffer from AIDS will find Fritz and Etta Mae are companions. Religious folks will be changed if this story is read with open minds and eyes. The result could be effective risks, love expressed to all, and lifes lived in equality.

The latest strains of tomato may look perfect, but they often have thick skins and tasteless flesh. Dwarf peas may be the easiest to grow commercially, but many gardeners still grow attractive six-foot types that taste "like peas used to taste." Whatever the benefits of modern hybrids, old varieties still have much to offer, and they are becoming hard to find.
Seed saving is a surprisingly simple and hugely satisfying way to propogate your favorite varieties. In this book you will find easy-to-follow, crop by crop guidelines to help you save your own seed.
Relevant to the beginner as well as the expert, Back Garden Seed Saving tells how and why we should join in the battle to save our irreplaceable vegetable heritage, and the reward--a kitchen full of tasty vegetables.

Once upon a time girls stopped wearing dresses to school and put on jeans and tie-dyed T-shirts. It was the Age of Aquarius, when old rules of behavior no longer seemed to apply. But now that the flower children have children of their own, they're starting to wonder what the new rules ought to be.Manners expert Carol McD. Wallace, who has two sons of her own, comes to the rescue with a clear, contemporary guide to what today's parents should teach their children, when to teach it, and how to do so with turning their homes into boot camp. Here, in the kind of knowing detail only a parent could offer, are step-by-step guides to: -Basic Training: The dawn of civilized behavior, or how to teach 3- to 5-year-olds to behave at meals, say "please" and "thank you", share, and apologize.-The Age of Reason: Refining the manners of 6- to 9- year-olds at home and abroad.-The Young Sophisticate: How to bring the manners of 10- to 12- year olds to high polish and, --Manners for Parents: Everything from when it's okay to bring your child into work to privacy--your own and your children's.

                            Klaus Albrecht Schröder

In this brilliant analysis, the erotic work of the Expressionist artist is examined within the perspective of history's shifting views concerning beauty, aesthetics, and decency.

Egon Schiele's controversial nudes and self-portraits were fiercely reviled when they first appeared in the early decades of the twentieth century and, nearly one hundred years later, they still have the power to shock. Examining why Schiele's work elicits this response, the author explores the social constrictions of Schiele's generation and the role of the artist as a breaker of taboos. Incorporating superb reproductions of Schiele's works, those of his contemporaries, and historical photographs, the author offers a penetrating study of an artist whose idea of beauty transcended the morality of his time.

Klaus Albrecht Schröder is Director of the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria.

5 out of 5 stars On the beginnings of the id in art.......2000-02-27

As we continue to toil through terrors remembered from the last century, up pops this little tome that quite successfully takes us back to the early years of the last century when psychology and the study of the dark side of our minds exerted its now immutable influence on all of history. In this scholarly but immensely entertaining dissection of the seeds within Egon Schiele's mind that produced a prodigious, fascinating body of figurative painting in a short life time, author Schroder investigates sexuality, mores, mental hospitals and those who captured the inmates on film, photography, and the crumbling of empires. Lavishly illustrated with not only many relatively unknown Schiele works but also with works by Gertsl, Klimt, Degas, Courbet and scientific photographs of the twisted minds and bodies caged in sanitariums, this book reads well and allows us to absorb just how significant Schiele was in opening 20th century art to new levels of exploration. This is a fine addition to libraries of artists, students, collectors, physicians, psychologists...and anyone who enjoys visiting the fin de sicle - asurring us that what seems crude today was seen, perhaps more naievly, a whole century ago!

                            4 out of 5 stars A painfully transparent Schiele.......2000-01-06

If in-your-face nudity is your cup of tea, then Egon Schiele is the one for you. He is the avatar of not only physical transparency; but also of emotional transparency. The uncoventional nude poses makes you a co-conspirator on a voyeuristic voyage, a voyage which you may embarrasingly enjoy or find distastefully provocative. The Prestel Verlag publication is translated from German. While it is priced for the budget conscious, its text is not so easily accessible. The text relies heavily on psycho-analytic jargon and analysis. For the uninitiated, it can prove to be quite a quagmire to wade through. So be forewarned. But if you are interested in Schiele's psyche then you will gobble this up.

Schiele's works represented in this book is adequately comprehensive and a fitting catalogue of his repertoire. If you are a fan of Kent William's works (mostly comics related)then you would see some influences borrowed from Schiele, esp in his limited colour palette.

The Irish, Kansas City's largest ethnic immigrant group ever, hauled stones to build foundations and buckets of water to put out fires. They cut the throats of a million cattle, laid miles of bricks and rails, drove the streetcars, kept and distrubed the peace, organized the working poor and kicked down barriers at City Hall and the courthouse for themselves and many generations and nationalities to come. Lavishly illustrated with photos from family collections and historic and newspaper archives, From the Bottom Up features a soft cover with a photo montage, for a handsome addition to the library of anyone who is proud of that wee touch of Irish blood - or simply interested in a fascinating perspective on how Kansas City came to be.
