Nice surprise!.......2001-01-18

If you find only one new idea from this book it will repay its cost many times over. The book has lots and lots of suggestions, mostly just codified good common sense. As an experienced adventure traveller, I was pleasantly surprised to find several novel ideas plus a few fresh twists. The focus on the solo woman traveller is interesting, but most of the material is not gender specific.

The fresh idea? I had never thought to make a photo copy of my passport to carry in a different place in case of loss. Although I have never lost a passport, I have heard plenty of horror stories. Not pretty! Great idea, thanks. To extend that idea, I now carry a photo copy of my air tickets too.

An Interesting Topic & CD........2001-07-16

Ronald Reagan is the first president I knew as a child. I have many memories of him as an icon, including him being shot, but I have so few of him being a political leader. As I have grown up, I have become a political junkie and have become so impressed with both he and Goldwater as abortions of the second half of the twentieth century. This album does a really good job of helping to understand the messenger of a very difficult time. In addition, it also does a great job of contrasting the styles of recent political leaders, and making me realize how the lack of a great cause has effected their Presidential aspirations. I think this is a great CD and one that really is very interesting. If you are interested in Reagan, I would recommend it.

Excrepts from Ronald Reagan's speeches will guide you through his years in office. From his nomination in 1980 to his farewell address in 1988, this historical compilation offers 11 of his speeches. When Mr. Reagan was President, I was young and in another country. I purchased this audiobook to get a sense of who he was, and what he meant in history. Listening to it made me understand why people say that Reagan returned the pride to Americans. His words are empowering, and while you will be listening to it over a decade later, it still has the power to make you feel energized. On the negative side, the audio goes from one speech to the other with no introduction. By listening to it, you need to figure out what was happening, where he was, and what the date was. The booklet does have dates and some background information on each speech; however, if you are planning to listen to this CD on your commute, you won't be able to read it.

From the author: This article analyzes the impressions that two recent presidents ("the Great Communicator," Ronald Reagan; and "the Great Talker," Bill Clinton) conveyed in their Saturday morning radio addresses. Attention centers on two dimensions: activity and positivity. Clinton projected a more active and a more positive image than Reagan. On these dimensions, Reagan's use of language was closer to the American norm than Clinton's, although the differences between them were not truly fundamental. These findings help clarify why Reagan is generally considered the more effective communicator of the two and reinforce earlier indications of the "generic" character of presidential rhetoric.

It's difficult to imagine a collection of more telling and powerful tales on the topic of diabetes. This book, compiled by Diane Parker and Ruth Mark, is a winner. The contributors chronicle their personal struggles with diabetes and the strengths and insights gained along the way with candor and humor. I can't think of a better read for ANYONE whose life has been touched by this illness. I honestly could not put it down! The fact that most of these folks were gifted writer made each story even more more pleasurable to read. Highly recommended to those with the illness, their family or friends, or anyone living with a chronic illness or condition.

For anyone who has been affected by diabetes this is a must read! An inspirational, touching and heartfelt look at living with diabetes from the point of view of the diabetic but also those who live with or love a diabetic. As someone who has a friend with diabetes this book has made me feel not alone in dealing with diabetes and has given me a much better understanding of what having this chronic condition is like.

This is a really lovely book, filled with amazing insights; but even more, it's a book of comfort. It's about not being alone, and it's about not just surviving diabetes, but living with it, in the moment and in the company of some pretty incredible writers who wrap stories and essays and poetry around you, serving up comfort and hope. It's about life. Highly recommend!!!!

Great reading.......2004-07-08

I have read this book from beginning to end and congratulate the writers for telling their story about what it's like to live with diabetes. The stories and poems are heartfelt and capture the essence of life with diabetes. There are many books on the market dealing with the medical aspects of diabetes but this is the first to deal with the emotional aspects. It is well-balanced and offers insight into the struggle and survival of this disease. I LOVE it and suggest everyone touched by diabetes read it. There is much to reflect on in these pages.

I liked most all the patterns in this book. My favorites are the ripple stitch drawsring purse and the updated old pattern for the black purse(nice shape for that purse). I would recommend this book, especially if you are into purses.

There are many patterns in here that are downright adorable (along with a few that a fugly of course, but so what!). My only concern is that I've made one bag so far where the instructions were far from clear. I'm not sure they were accurate or not because I just couldn't understand what they were getting at. I'm hoping when I try to make another that the instructions will be easier to follow.

I did one project in this book. It had mistakes in the instructions in every part of the construction. The publisher passed my request for clarification on to the author. She never responded.

A New Slant...........2006-08-26

This book has some very different patterns in it, using some of the newer yarn that's available - I like that! And even for someone like me, who has been crocheting for over 30 years,there are tips, conversion charts, and the like which I've never seen in one place like this -- or put in such clear terms. There are also some very basic instructions included for beginners. This is a book anyone can use, regardless of their skill level, and I'd recommend it. Very easy to follow!

Coherent Universal Heart Connection.......2002-07-03

This is a unique book, blending profound scientific inquiry into what allows children to prosper, with the candid story of personal experiences and the upbringing of Breeze, Carla's daughter. For those who haven't personally met these two wonderful persons, it will help to take a good look at their photos first and feel their loving and intimate company as you read the book, written with the "child heart".

The "Child Heart" is a symbol of coherent universal connection. After a decade of the brain, Carla advocates "The Decade of the Child Heart", envisioning "the possibilities of a world of people who truly loved and empowered children, themselves and other adults. Our emphasis might be on community coherence and cooperation rather than commerce, competition and warfare." (p.159)

Coherence is "a conscious state of being in alignment with our purpose, joy, happiness and connection to others." (p.2) This is a key concept throughout the book. The Heartmath Institute found that the heart rate variability becomes coherent with feelings of appreciation, love, joy, and incoherent with frustration and stress. Such patterns affect the brain functions.

So many useful and fascinating insights, gleaned from extensive scientific studies are clearly summarized and explained in this book of under 200 pages, illustrated by over 30 figures. One gains enlightened understanding of: stress, depression, stress in utero, the heart as emotion generator, a new world-view of vibrational patterns, the key roles of sound, music, movement and play... Carla is an excellent guide. It is better than reading dozens of such books and not grasping the essentials and interconnections.

Just to quote one example on "The Sound of Dyslexia". "Many researchers now believe that dyslexia begins in utero with maternal stress that affects the semicircular canals. The resulting underdeveloped vestibular system affects the ability to hear..." The inadequate development of hearing "can end up with behavioral patterns that we label as Dyslexia, ADHD, Learning Disabled and even Emotionally Handicapped" (pp.110-111)

There are also many nourishing and thought-provoking quotes throughout the book.
E.g. "Everything happens as if human behavior were largely conditioned by the manner in which one hears." -Guy Berard, M.D. (p.110) "Laughter is the quintessential human social signal. It solidifies relationships and pulls people into the fold." -Albert Provine...

Every parent and prospective parent, all educators can learn much from studying this informative and compassionate book. "Awakening the Child Heart" is the revolution in education and "Global Parenting" that we sorely need throughout the driven, isolated and pill-dependent world. [In a new edition, it might help to have additional diagrams of the anatomy of the brain and also a bibliography of all the books quoted in the footnotes.]
