The unfortunate man, having finished his packing, had sat down on the spruce log with his face to the fire, and his back to the dense woods, to wait for his companion. While thus waiting, his monstrous assailant, which must have been lurking nearby in the woods, waiting for a chance to catch one of the adventurers unprepared, came silently up from behind, walking with long, noiseless steps, and seemingly still on two legs.

                          Book Description

The story of a young man who dies at the age of 19 from complications of a liver transplant. Written by his father who was by his son's side throughout his struggle and at the moment of his death, the book is about parents and children, doctors and patients, and the perils and promise of high-technology medicine. The author's quest to salvage meaning from disaster through a journey of exploration into Jesse's life and death stands at the center of the book.

                          Customer Reviews:

                          4 out of 5 stars A father's story of his son's life and death.......2003-03-07

The Book of Jesse is about the life, illness and death of a young man. It is equally the story of his father's efforts to care for his son in the face of serious and ultimately fatal illness. It is about the family's struggles and, most of all, about the mysteries of creativity and of human development as long as life is breathed. In his introduction, Michael Rowe says that the writer donsý"the mantle of creative artist while dealing in the coin of true storyý; and let his readers decide whether he has written a good story, and a true story."

In my view, this true story is also a good story. It is surprising that a reader should look forward to reading a book about the illness and death of a young man. Yet the book is intrinsically interesting and compelling, both in style and substance. The use of Jesse's drawings offers a symbolic focus that reminds us of the power and transcendence of art. The moving back and forth between events before and during Jesse's last illness and after his death, while confusing at times, also works because it helps to show the varying moods and tugs that his father and family encounter. The impact of modern technological medicine on patients, families, and medical staff is also well described.

There are no easy answers here, and no manipulations either. The author's style is straightforward and honest. Despite the unanswered questions and the grieving that continues, this book leaves the reader with a sense of wholeness both about Jesse and his father's struggle to understand his son and himself.

5 out of 5 stars The Book of Jesse.......2003-02-24

The Book of Jesse by Michael Rowe is the story of a family's love and suffering as they watch and try to help their loved one struggle to stay alive.
It is a book in which the author has shared his thoughts and feelings with us. In doing so, he has put into words what many of us have experienced in one way or another.
As a retired member of the madical profession, I highly recommend it be read by everyone in the medical field. It will enhance and renew their empathy.
To the author I say "God Bless you and your family for all that you did for Jesse."
                          - Gloria M. Coughlin

4 out of 5 stars Compelling, full of candor; sure to invoke new insights.......2003-02-04

I recommend this book from many perspectives: as a parent, a social worker and former health administrator, and as a relative of another young man who died from liver disease. I specifically recommend this book for the precise reasons that some readers will find themselves struggling with. The author exposes the unpretty side of medical care and in doing so, heightens our awareness of all too readily accepted medical practices and behavior. Rowe presents the uneasy complexities of two families grasping for precious moments with their shared loved one. And, a father's struggle to make sense out of devastation is sometimes hard to read. Self serving? Yes. Of course. It's a father's story about his son. However, the author need not apologize. In writing this book, he helps us know ourselves better; we can appreciate the sharp, difficult realities of illness better; we are challenged to see hope and beauty amidst the shards; and, we get to know - and learn from - a courageous young man, Jesse. This book should be required reading for medical students and professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Love at Full Arousal.......2003-02-03

Life on an intensive care unit is such as to induce family members to forget that there is, or has ever been, normal life elsewhere. It is the great merit of Michael Rowe's book to remind the reader that his son Jesse had always attempted to build such a normal life for himself, even as a child battling numerous illnesses. Jesse did this by creating many drawings, and Rowe includes both reproductions and verbal analyses of them in the book. The effect is to normalize Jesse for us, to re-humanize him, to lift him out of the patient role, as he lies teetering between life and death on the ICU. I took care of my father during his critical illness of five-and-a-half years, and I can attest that the book eloquently captures the minute-by-minute feel of intensive caregiving, of love at full emergency arousal.

5 out of 5 stars Graceful and Intimate.......2003-01-22

With a gentle but sure hand, Rowe guides us on a tour of a young man's talent and illness, and a father's profound hope and loss. The book is illustrated with pictures drawn by Jesse, which seem to range from a fascination with comic book heroes, to anguished representations of mortality--some of which are on par with works from the Vienna Secession. As such, Rowe sets upon a mission of collaboration with his late son, and introduces us to Jesse in the most intimate and graceful of fashions. At one point in the text, Rowe describes how he pretends to haggle over a painting of Jesse's with his other son, Daniel; although Rowe knows this is contest he must lose, he engages it to watch "the heat of [Daniel's] love draw Jesse from his shadows." This book represents a similar endeavor that meets its goals, and in so doing, effectively draws Jesse from the shadows of illness, medicine, and time, to our conscience.

I love this knitting book. There are some projects other than sweaters. This could be used by anyone from beginning to advanced knitting experience. Yarn selection is difficult in my area as I do not usually knit with wool for children.

Every pattern is adorable and very up-to-date. The photography is wonderful and the models-wow! They are so cute! Most of the patterns range from 3 years to 10-12 years old. It is well worth your money and a must-have. I would like to make every one of the patterns shown in the book.

Out of the many, many knitting books I have this is my absolute favorite. The patterns are so beautiful and timeless. I have knitted at least 5 items from this book, and have not come across a mistake yet. Rowan is very careful about the accuracy of their patterns, and it definitely shows in Junior Knits. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to knit for children, although I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

I have enjoyed this book immensely and have knitted a couple of items from it. It provides inspiration even if you want to adapt and change patterns. My favourite kids knitting book for kids though is Pipsqueaks by Kim Hargreaves also. It is one you come back to again and again.

This book had a lot of very practical ideas. You can tell that the author had real life experience with these situations and found solutions that work for ordinary people. My favorite was the idea to spend 5 minutes in each room. That really helped my with my biggest problem, the endless clutter. I would recomend this book to anyone who would like to streamline their life and feel more in control.

I keep my copy by my bed. It's got great practical solutions and drawings to demonstrate. I give this book as gifts to those of my friends who won't be offended by the "self-help" implications of receiving it! I've implemented lots of the ideas.

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I was looking for.......2004-08-03

As an extrememly unorganized person, I was looking for a book that would map out exactly what to do one step at a time. I get overwhelmed very easily. The day after ordering this book, my friend sent me a website link about organization, and I found that it was exactly what I was looking for. It talked about slowly getting to the organizing point that I want to be at and how to get there, baby steps. The website is flylady.net, and I found out that the lady who does this website has a book here on Amazon as well, called Sink Reflections. After being on her website, I wish I had bought that book instead, which I still plan to. From the website alone, my house has never looked better, it's still not even close to perfection, but at least now I feel it is somewhat presentable if someone were to show up at my door. Though Totally Organized may be helpful to many people, I find that I need more direction, and more mapped out steps. I would recommend you check out flylady.net before you make a decision.

5 out of 5 stars Most Helpful Book I've Read...............2002-11-06

next to Flylady's book and her website. This book gives real practical advice, page after page, and I've read a lot of organizing books! It is extremely helpful for mothers with children. If I were to only have one organizing book, this would definitely be it. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars So much more than just lines on paper on folks.........2007-05-12

Dedicated collectors of Crumb will appreciate this book for what it is - a genuine tribute to hope and youthful enthusiasm through the eyes of 'the first punk' (see "Confessions of..").

"Your Vigor for Life Appalls Me" adds a deeper layer of insight into Crumb's fascinating family life and his discovery in the 1950's of a world outside his closed Catholic existence. And fittingly, between the lines of Crumb's writing, so to are the rich lives of Marty Pahls, Mike Britt and Charles-Maxon-Sandra-Carol-Beatrice-Charles Snr Crumb. All people whose lives were one way or another turned inside-out by the works of Harvey Kurtzman, Charles Barks, and ultimatetly - one Robert "voice of countercultureMrSixtiessexpervertlovechildidealistonceinagenerationGENIUS" CRUMB.

I'm 27 and find Robert Crumb's comics to be the work a 'classic' modern artist. Yes I've suffered the appalled looks and barbs of many a dissident, but I maintain that even when his work is grotesque and repellent you can't help but be fascinated by this man's focus and tenacity. OK, does anyone not know that Crumb loves voluptuos, fleshy women and doesn't mind getting kinky with 'em? I mean is that pretty much absolutely VERY OBVIOUS BY NOW FOLKS?? AND that he had the kind of troubled childhood that is vividly echoed in this (very endearing!) book of letters?

This is a chidhood/teenagehood that I think people of our time would be able to relate to.. particularly those who are creatively inclined or at an early age blankly questioned subjects such as religion, philosophy, art, 'fandom', what makes things 'good' or meaningful, family, the unknown.. Here we see Crumb asking these questions that at some stage in an artists life, just have to be asked. To paraphrase - "Could pretty much all of what I've been told is good and true be made up of lies? Would they actually do that just to make a buck?"

This book establishes that even in his early teens, Robert Crumb was an individual with talent, passion and an incredible focus. And the letters are hardly 'tedious'.. Knowing full-well what Crumb would become is half the joy of reading this book, which if you've read this far you know you must purhcase. ESSENTIAL for the Crumb collector.

4 out of 5 stars Probably for completists , mostly..........2002-07-11

This collection of letters focuses primarily on R. Crumb's life from age 16 to about age 21. It's particularly useful in its presentation of how the budding artist formulated his views while he was still in such an impressionable stage of life. All 50 of the letters printed in this volume are addressed to one or the other of his youthful friends (Mike Britt and Marty Pahls), with whom he shared the primary interests of comic-book collecting (fandom) and collecting records from the 1920s. A lot of the content of these letters consists of lists of comics and records with the accompanying minutiae relating to them. While this makes for tedious reading at times, it demonstrates the obsessive passion Crumb had for the worlds of these particular collectibles. Sprinkled among the letters are incompletely formed philosophical tracts about isolation, religion, the commercialism of American society, and personal relations. It also includes some examples of early artwork which Crumb included within his letters to his friends. While this collection does not present Crumb's evolution past his early-20s, it does give the reader a sense of an idealistic, youthful, and sometimes sweet R. Crumb that his fans are unlikely to find elsewhere. So while I would recommend this to Crumb completists, I would suggest that those less knowledgable about the artist start with Zwigoff's documentary, "Crumb", or "The R.Crumb Coffee Table Art Book".

5 out of 5 stars Glimpses into the psyche of a comix genius.......1998-10-06

It is easy to deconstruct the graphic ouvre of R. Crumb. This does not mean that understanding his creative mind is an easy task. This collection of his letters from the early years of his career gives the reader a glimpse into the passions and motivations of America's formost cultural iconoclast.

This book is not for the Politically Correct crowd, which is a blessing. Crumb is not only honest in his creative work, but in describing his attitudes about American popular culture--the more obscure the expression, the more he appreciates it.

A must-have for any scholar of pop culture.
