        Book Description

Understanding and working with the current models of financial markets requires a sound knowledge of the mathematical tools and ideas from which they are built. Banks and financial houses all over the world recognize this and are avidly recruiting mathematicians, physicists, and other scientists with these skills.

The mathematics involved in modern finance springs from the heart of probability and analysis: the Itô calculus, stochastic control, differential equations, martingales, and so on. The authors give rigorous treatments of these topics, while always keeping the applications in mind. Thus, the way in which the mathematics is developed is governed by the way it will be used, rather than by the goal of optimal generality. Indeed, most of purely mathematical topics are treated in extended "excursions" from the applications into the theory. Thus, with the main topic of financial modelling and optimization in view, the reader also obtains a self-contained and complete introduction to the underlying mathematics.

This book is specifically designed as a graduate textbook. It could be used for the second part of a course in probability theory, as it includes an applied introduction to the basics of stochastic processes (martingales and Brownian motion) and stochastic calculus. It would also be suitable for a course in continuous-time finance that assumes familiarity with stochastic processes.

The prerequisites are basic probability theory and calculus. Some background in stochastic processes would be useful, but not essential.

Finance Just in Time is a hands-on, no-equations guide to both corporate finance and the financial markets. Author Hugo Dixon, former editor of the Lex Column for the Financial Times, explains topics such as risk, return, cost of capital, valuation, shareholder value, mergers & acquisitions, stocks, currency, bond markets, and crises and crashes in a highly accessible manner. The book is geared to business and non-business professionals who need a stronger understanding of finance and how it works.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-07-11

        This is a wonderful book.

Don't be fooled by the chatty tone and examples. The author knows what he is talking about as a former editor of the Lex column in the Financial Times, which should be daily, essential reading for staying up-to-date with market events, and would make an excellent follow-on to this book.

I have often recommended this book to people beginning a study of Finance (e.g., starting an MBA) and the feedback has always been superb. Reading this book carefully will give the reader an excellent base from which to acquire more detials later on. Even for more experienced professionals (particularly in corporate finance), sometimes the forest can get lost for the trees and this book will re-orient you.

Well done, Hugo Dixon - I do hope this book can be kept in-print and current. Possibly also, it would be wonderful to expand coverage of markets topics on the investor side (perhaps a criterion for what to include would be to be able to read and understand anything in the Lex column).

        4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-01-04

Hugo Dixon describes virtually every aspect of finance that the average individual needs to know to live in the world and survive, and he does it in such a way that even the most uninitiated can understand. This is truly a one of a kind book. I know of no other that covers the range in such an elementary manner. I constantly refer to it in addition to my more advanced books on finance.

        5 out of 5 stars Just Great.......2001-09-06

I have been a 'student' of finance and investment for nearly 30 years. This book simply explains the foundations of finance and then applies it to the business and investment world. There are some problems to solve that bring the principles to life. Explanations are balanced and point out both sides to controversial issues or theories. A reading elevates you to the 'expert class'. I recommend it to anyone interested in finance and investment.

Allen Lacy is a philosophy professor who loves plants--what a perfect combination for a garden essayist. Collected in this volume are selections from his quarterly newsletter, Homeground, which has delighted gardeners around the world for the last seven years. The newsletter is a rich tapestry of experience and opinion, of plants, weather, and musings on digging in the dirt. It is a joy to have in In a Green Shade a distillation of Lacy's knowledgeable prose, honed during his five years as garden columnist for The Wall Street Journal and seven years for The New York Times.

"Can there be a scintilla of doubt that the most mysteriously neglected plants in North America at the moment are the cape fuchsias?" asks Lacy, who then goes on to explain why we should all be growing at least several Phygelius cultivars. He describes how he planted an arbor to drip gourds through its crosspieces, and how the Aztecs domesticated dahlias from wildlings growing in the mountains of central Mexico. His interests are far-ranging, and he takes his readers along with him on an exploration of all things horticultural.

What makes this book especially useful is that it comes from Lacy's own firsthand gardening experience working in his small, suburban New Jersey garden. He is faced, like the rest of us, with unexpected storms, late freezes, and not enough space to indulge all his plant enthusiasms. The difference is that he is a fine writer who is able to transform his experiences into literature to amuse us when we brush the dirt off our hands and come in from the garden. --Valerie Easton

          Book Description

Since 1993, truly fortunate gardeners have been those who have subscribed to Allen Lacy's HOMEGROUND, a quarterly newsletter. Now over a hundred pieces of writing taken from this lively periodical appear as IN A GREEN SHADE. Many of them grow from the author's thirty years of experience transforming a small suburban lot into a private Eden, with its woodland garden, its cottage garden, and its extensive deck and container gardens. Readers will find thoughtful discussions of perennials, annuals, and woody plants, as well as the tropical and subtropical plants that are of such keen interest today. After taking in Lacy's spirited recommendations, they will find themselves unable to do without the daffodil called 'Hawera', the hosta 'Sum and Substance', fragrant-leaved geraniums, or the Roughneck Stool from Rubbermaid (a weeder's helper). IN A GREEN SHADE also travels farther afield, commenting on botanical history and such matters as the perennial conflict between gardeners and television weather reporters, or between proponents of native plants and their more cosmopolitan colleagues. As Henry Mitchell wrote of Lacy's THE GARDEN IN AUTUMN, "Among other virtues, it is based on firsthand experience by a gardener who happens to be an admirable writer."

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The gardening life..........2000-05-29

Allen Lacy has been writing about gardening for a number of years in books, newspaper columns and letters to friends. I've purchased mostly paperback copies, but bought this one in hardcover because I kept the others and wish now I had bought hardcover versions. I reread them from time to time, and lend them to really good friends who will return them. Lacy gardens in New Jersey in Zone 7 so I find his writing helpful since I live in the same climate. He was a philosophy professor for a number of years, and his writing is reflective. This book is filled with practical wisdom. Think of your old uncle Horace who can get anything to grow sharing some of advice. Lacy's books fall some where between an essay on "How gardening changed my life" and "Why your Bee Balm got Mildew."

"In a Green Shade" is a collection of articles covering the seasons of the year. In spring he writes about bulbs and other familiar plants, including Fritillaries which are not so well known or grown because some find them frustrating. Lacy implies there is hope for those who fancy these lovely flowers, though I refuse to waste any more money on 'Imperialis.' He says if one can figure out how to treat them properly, the fritillery are faithful flowers that return year after year. I love Meleagris (Snake's Head lily, and have had some luck here). Lacy digresses on Thomas Jefferson's love of the Imperialis and it's origins in Turkey.

In other sections, he covers lillies, roses, Bee Balm, tobacco plants, gourds, dahlias, begonias, mums, trees (Hazel)and other plants he has grown in his New Jersey garden. He discusses their nature as well as nurture, and their history, geography and interesting anecdotes. I particularly found his bits on creating a garden on a deck interesting. His pots, and trellises and other deck paraphanalia must be beautiful, and I wish a photo or two had been included. I have mirrored his approach to gardening--completely fill the yard with plants, shrubs and trees, and removed the grass--so if you like grass, don't look here.

If you've read many gardening books, some of the anecdotal material may seem recycled. For example, seasoned readers know Nasturtiums are nose-twisters. If you're starting out, the book will seem fresh, and funny in places. If you need lots of basic "how-to" information, the book will prove less useful. There are no photos of how to prepare the soil or long discussions of which tools to buy. From time to time, Mr.Lacy interjects technical details, but this is not the strength of this book, although there is a short list of extant nurseries in the back of the book.

This book is nice, but for the same price you can buy a DVD on the subject. I like Aimee Ketchum's DVD because not only does she do a great job of demonstrating baby massage, but she also gives lots of information on how your baby develops. Her massage method lasts only 4-5 minutes per session. I really don't have the time to spend an hour giving my baby a massage. There is so much more information on her DVD about your baby and how simple exercises can help your baby's brain development and lots and lots of other stuff. I just don't see why you'd want to buy a book with only massage pictures in it when you can buy a DVD with not only lots of massage info, but also has tons and tons of other simple stuff you can do with your baby. It makes so much sense and you don't need to buy anything else. Plus Aimee has a nice personality and you can tell she really cares. She's very qualified and is a pediatric OT plus certified massage therapist for babies, like Gweneth Paltro hires to massage her baby.

5 out of 5 stars Deeply moving and wonderfully inspirational book.......1999-01-23

What a beautiful book! The photographs are so telling of the love existant between mother and child. Frederick Leboyer is gifted with words and descriptions come across as simple poetry rather than dry descriptions. Here is something I wish my mother had done to me as a child. A gift I will give myself and my child when the time comes. On a side note I didn't find the exclusion of fathers massaging as being a bad thing. This is the story of Shantala and her baby. The poetic reference to death is about the death of the soul without love. Whether you are a baby or an adult the results are the same.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos reveal loving method for bonding with baby.......1998-03-19

Beautiful photographs set amidst poetry and simple instructions guide new parents in positioning and massaging their baby. The book conveys a sense of serenity that a parent may find through interacting with his or her child. It also discusses various oils and lotions that can be used for a smooth and soothing massage. One factor which did not allow for a 10 rating here is the lack of fathers giving infant massage. Also note that if someone wished to give this book as a gift, they should be aware that there is one poem which discusses the circle of life, including death, which can be very upsetting to some new parents. If this book has been revised by Leboyer, I would certainly look for the new; it is very difficult to find the original.

                5 out of 5 stars Passageways.......2006-06-27

Durini has created a fantastical novel and work of scholarship. "The Felt Hat: Joseph Beuys a Life Told" is an immensely important read for anyone trying to understand the culture and life of post war Germany from the point of view of its artists. Having been sequestered since Hitler began to take power, the voices of many artists saw freedom in those like Joseph Beuys who survived the war. To understand this book one must look at the artist from the stand point of a mystic and a Shaman. A healer in a world awash with danger and disgrace. The life mission of Joseph Beuys was not so much to create art as it was to engage people with ideas and force each one of us to step outside our world of understanding and common ground.

To accomplish this very complex task in her book, Durini began by telling us the story of Beuys crashing his German bomber in Cirema, Russia in 1943. The story of his rescue is utterly false and completely fabricated by Beuys himself. The story was written to explain Beuys' use of specific materials in his art. Beuys created his own mythology and in doing so created his persona. The interviews which Durini has published for this book are extremely important source documents which cannot be found elsewhere. They include very intimate details of how Beuys became an artist and what drives him to engage people in communication. This desire to confront society and force people to question and think was again broached when Beuys started the Green party of Germany.

The Green party began as a party for the middle and lower class. The party was very concerned with the degradation of the environment and the building of a socialist state. Having since departed from many of these basic party platforms, the party remains only a shadow of it's original intent after Beuys' death. The simple fact that an ARTIST created a political party is tantamount. Not only is it rare in modern society, it is completely unheard of, especially in the United States! Beuys use of his voice to educate the public also extended to his lectures.

As a professor of art, Beuys routinely packed his lectures with youth filling every seat in an auditorium and allowing students to sit on stairs for an entire semester or longer if they took successive courses. His message was one of hope and social activism to ensure that his students and his country would change from what it had become under Hitler. This willingness to reclaim his own history, and the history of his country shows not only Beuys' magnanimity, but also his passion, love and concern for the well being of the human race.

Durini's book is as practical as it is fantastical. In a way it holds a mirror to the life works of Joseph Beuys and reflects them to the reader. The image we receive is reflected in such a way that the mythology and also the reality of Joseph Beuys becomes lucid.

It was the review above that put me off this book, but I read extracts from my university library and also consulted "joseph Beuys: the art of cooking" from the same author and found nothing of use, just a general rantings of the authors relationship to the artist. well, good for you - but how does this help me? or anyone else?
The author SEEMS to offer the same hero worship that Joseph Beuys was keen to escape from, given the dangers of idolising anyone, his critics certainly made a big deal of this (especially benjamin "quite mean" buchloh who compares Beuys to fascism and claims that a former luftwafe pilot cannot represent the art of post-war germany - but I say, look to your own problems in dealing with your national identity in the climate of psychological post-war reconstruction and leave the do-gooders be) and the image tends to override everything else - the lasting image is one of messiah and not creative freedom.

It would probably be hard to overestimate the impact the works of German artist Joseph Beuys have had on modern European art. This is true. It is also true that Beuys was, and still remains, a most fascinating figure, and a most inspiring one as well. Thought provoking, liberating, and magical. However, Beuys was no great philosopher. Actually, to be quite honest, he was equipped with a brain like a Swiss cheese, full of holes, and whenever he was asked to talk about art - or politics, or ecology, or whatever - most of what he had to say made no sense whatsoever. For those of us who are FOR BEUYS - compared to those who are against him - READING Beuys can be very depressing, being constantly confronted with nonsense, mixed with lack of knowledge and pure mumbo-jumbo, and not even the slightest bit sophisticated, or ironic. Durini's book contains transcripts of a discussion with Beuys, entitled "We are the revolution", and more.

Generally speaking, Durini's book is perhaps the most embarrassing one I've ever read. She, a (self-proclaimed?) "cultural professional, journalist, writer and patron" of the arts knew Beuys personally, and he - she says - changed her life. I bet he did. She was a Beuys groupie, and now that he's dead she's devoted her life to repeating over and over again just how splendid he was, and in all ways imaginable, strongly emphasizing - constantly - how fascinated HE was with HER, how SHE inspired HIM, and how THEY collaborated, and so on. Despite the book's subtitle, "A Life Told", it's not about the life of Joseph Beuys, and neither is it about art. Instead, Durini - it would seem - has taken every word Beuys ever ushered for granted, all of the nonsense and the mumbo-jumbo, and boiled it into a Swiss cheese soup, adding more than a few dashes of egomania. If it wasn't so absolutely pathetic, perhaps it could have been funny. But it isn't. As far as I am concerned, the MOST embarrassing part of the book is an "interview" conducted by a certain MBM, "interviewing" Durini. If she - Durini - didn't write ALL of this herself (and while I was reading I kept suspecting that she had ... Which (sane) interviewer would go, like MBM does, "In Beuys I see the totality of reason set within the context of life, and therefore in the real and the spiritual"? And what the heck does it mean?) ... Where was I? If she didn't make this up herself, MBM ought to be ashamed of himself. Lucrezia De Domizio Durini, I fear, would never even stop to consider.

                Go buy some other book.
