Excellent guide ...for a 1st edition........2001-12-02

This guide provides good information on Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I cannot comment on Finland since it was ommited from our Scandinavian Tour. The information on historical places was more than enough and accurate. This guide pointed to us the exact location of rock carvings in the Tanum area (Sweden), something that the signs on location failed to do!. The suggested "green" routes were magnificent. Me and Jonas really felt that we did not waste our time and that every one of these routes (both in Sweden and Norway) were "golden" ones. The general maps are not detailed but those of the "green" routes are, with precise indications of views and panoramas. You don't expect accomodation listings in the "green" guides (that's what the "red" are for). We were surprised although that Michelin failed to give a star rating (we would give 3 stars) to the magnificent town of Alesund, but merely underlined it! If we did not experiment on our own we would have missed one of the most beautifull Norwegian towns in the "Jugend" style. I think that for a 1st edition, this guide is a very good effort. It can guide you to the splendours of Scandinavia and comparing it after our trip with other guides I think that I would go back with my Michelin again.

facts and only facts.......2003-07-03

For my 20-day trip to Sweden and Denmark, I picked up several travel books (Lonely Planet Denmark and Scandinavia, Fodor's Scandinavia, Michelin the Green Guide Scandinavia Finland, Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2003 by Rick Steves, and Frommer's Scandinavia). Out of all of these books, the most consistent and most accurate are Michelin and Lonely Plant books.

I tried hotels recommended by Frommer and Fodor and was very disappointed (mind you, these had stars next to the write-ups). I tried one restaurant recommended by Frommer (w/ a star) and got sick afterwards. Silly me, I tired another (w/ a star) to give another chance and the meal was very mediocre. Same deal with Fodor. Where as Lonely Planet just gave facts about hotels and was very pleased with how things turned out. Hotels and meals matched the expectation that the book gave, so no unpleasant surprises.

I used the Lonely Planet Denmark book so much during the trip, I brought the Lonely Planet Scandinavia book in Denmark.... even though it was $...! It was well worth $....

As for Rick Steves, obviously, he only highlighted what he liked. There were some places that I loved in Sweden and Denmark that he suggest to skip.

This book should be a MUST READ.......2007-08-15

There are many imitations to the subject, but there's no replacing the classics. Even though the slang is straight from the 70's, Chaney Allen is one of the most honest and straightforward authors I've ever read. Her wisdom, courage and spirit was felt by this reader. Not only does she give wonderful advice on recovery, but is good for life, period. IMHO, college students should read this book, especially freshmen leaving home for the 1st time.

I'm male, white and sober and Chaney was part of it.

I met Chaney in San Diego in the early 70's and she was a very powerful influence to me and many other struggling acoholics.

If you're in need of help this book should be a must read.

A must read for all African-American Women beginning anew........1999-03-12

In May, 1989, my sister met this woman, Chaney Allen, and told her that her sister, me, was in a treatment center hoping to recover from the disease of addiction. Ms. Allen autographed a copy of her book, "I'm Black & I'm Sober" and my sister mailed it to me. I read it and marvelled at the the content thereof. I had never read anything so personal and honest. It indeed gave me the identification and courage I needed to believe that I, too, could recover from a disease which wrecked such havoc in my life. I applaud Ms. Chaney Allen for sharing her life with me through the pages of "I'm Black & I'm Sober." As I approach a decade drug/alcohol-free I thank God for using you to give me and many others hope - you see, I passed on your book to those I met.

This book is worth it's weight in gold! I have been sewing for many, many years and immediately found things in the book that I never knew about. Great pictures and explainations and worth getting for even the most skilled seamstress as you will most likely find something new in this book. The best by far of any sewing book I have purchased. Would recommend highly! A good "read"!

some good ideas.......2005-03-23

I wanted to know the techniques that make a garment look store bought rather than home made. This book had lots of great tips. No hand sewing at all.........why can't the pattern companies follow this lead ? Easy to read, quick reference information. My only complaint is the photographs can be a little difficult to see..............dark coloured fabric with dark coloured thread or perfectly matching threads so that you can't clearly see the example - should have used contrasting threads.

Anyway, I enjoyed it and would recomemend it.

Great text for sewing students.......2003-07-22

I am a sewing teacher at a college, and I discovered this book in the library as I was looking for texts to improve my skills and knowledge. I got so excited about the book that I read it from cover to cover. I am going to propose that we include this book as one of our textbooks for my Advanced Clothing Construction class to help them learn better sewing techniques and improve their skills. I like all the helpful hints throughout the book, as well as the alphabetical organization. I also like the pictures that show exactly how to measure yourself, and I think the book explains techniques pretty well. The only thing that I think needs improvement is that it is hard to see what they are illustrating in many of the photographs. The reason is because they used bright colored fabrics that look identical on the right and wrong sides, and the thread blends in so well that it is difficult to see. However, if you can follow directions, you can still understand how to do the techniques because their step-by-step directions are pretty good. I want to get one of these books for myself.

Excellent, Most Complete Reference.......2002-02-09

I've been sewing for over twenty years, and have authored over a dozen crafts and quilting books. Just yesterday I checked this book out of the library and am thrilled at this discovery and am here on Amazon to order a copy.
The book gets into much more detail than most texts, and answers little questions that other books don't touch. The depth reminds me of articles in Threads. Things like: how and when to use feed dogs to your advantage; the nitty gritty on prewashing and how to test; excellent illustrated fabric ID photos and instructions (for all those pieces of yardage we have stored away;) )...
This book is an excellent deal at Amazon's price (Why did another reviewer complain? And BTW, I checked out the plaid cuff in question--it wasn't opened up fully!) and will be a welcome--and much used--addition to the sewer's library.

Good book for "intermediate/beginners".......2001-08-01

I'd still classify myself as a beginning sewer, but this book is very helpful. I've got a Singer Sewing book that has illustrations that are less clear, in my opinion. This book certainly doesn't take the place of a basic reference, but I'm pleased that I bought it, and I've been referring to it a lot. I consider this book a replacement for someone nearby who is an experienced sewer who would drop by my house and say things like, "you know, you can use invisible thread for that..." and things like that that I'd never know about otherwise. I do have to agree with the reviewer who said the colors of the fabric in the book are not the easiest to look at. As far as I can tell, this is true of all sewing books that include color photographs.

Just common sense.......2005-11-16

This is a good book but it is very tiny and looks like something you'd pick up in the supermarket checkout line. It's a great pick me up but nothing incredibly life changing is in it - just simple common sense things to keep your cool, i.e. count to 10, etc.

Karol Ladd is an attractive, articulate woman who specializes in bringing Christ's teachings to the least understood group of human beings in America--the stay at home Moms who are often misunderstood, especially in Texas ever since that woman went a little crazy and killed all her kids. Don't let that happen to you, and get yourself a copy of "Scream Savers," which is a Bible-based guide to keeping your cool even when your kids get out of hand.

Whatever you do, spare your children from your own neuroses, especially if they are the fatal kind in which the chikdren are not seen as loving dependents, but as enemies of the stay-at-home mother. Karol Ladd, who has written over thirty books, and spoken often to many Texas and national women's groups, can show you the way. She is not exactly a stay at home Mom herself, but she's been there, and she will help you to cope. Remember, murder is not a resort, even a last resort, but prayer and confidence can and should be your first port of call when you make your voyage into the pften rewarding world of being a Stay at Home Mom.

There are many great tips here. Recommended. Karol Ladd could be the cousin of the starlet Cheryl Ladd, both are petite and blonde and very articulate and together women with a love of Texas that shines right through them.

Beautiful and insightful.......2005-05-16

I very much enjoyed the choice of photographs that were included in this book: the trinity of "Migrant Mother", "Pledge of Allegiance", and "White Angel Breadline", along with other photographs that showed the range across time, space and subjects that formed the body of Lange's work. My only gripe with the photographs was the narrow crop used for "Pledge of Allegiance"; I much prefer the wider aspect ratio the Getty chose for their print.

The essays were mostly quite insightful, particularly the ones by people who knew her, the editor Partridge, her son Daniel Dixon, and Ansel Adams. I didn't get as much out of the essay by Sally Stein.

Overall this is a great book and the best I've seen to date on Lange's life and work.

Visually beautiful.......2001-07-04

Fascinating book about the famous photographer. A woman before her time in many ways. This is an honest account of what many who worked with her, lived with her and loved her thought OF her. The pictorial story of American life will capture your attention.

Succinct. Beautiful........1999-05-28

This book is put together in a way that allows readers to meet Dorothea Lange on different levels. On a personal level through family (or "just like" family) members, friends, and through Ms. Lange's own words (wonderfully used as text to complement her photographs). On a professional level, an interview with one of Ms. Lange's fellow photographers is included, along with chapter-long essays by those who have studied her work and life. I feel the strengths of this book are the organization, essays by those who knew Ms. Lange personally, and Ms. Lange's words.

The photographs are direct, honest and beautiful. Ms. Lange, her life, and words at times tough and unyielding, yet are luminous, and always "true".
