Book Description
Cleopatra’s Wedding Present is the rare book that captivates its reader from the first page. Like the best travel books, Robert Tewdwr Moss’s memoir of his travels through Syria resonates on many levels: as a profoundly telling vivisection of Middle Eastern society, a chilling history of ethnic crimes, a picaresque adventure story, a purely entertaining travelogue, and a poignant romance.
Tewdwr Moss, a brilliant young writer who was murdered in London the day after he finished this book, left this lyrical gem as his legacy. He adeptly captures an essence of the Middle East that is foreign to most of us, but which becomes real with his astute observations of the region’s culture and explosive politics. He conveys what so many westerners find both fascinating and frightening in the Middle East, making no attempt to mask circumstances that are appalling and dangerous while also exotic, beautiful, and sometimes very funny.
Mesopotamia, now present-day Syria, was part of Mark Anthony’s love gift to Cleopatra. Then and now, it is a land of mystery and love.
The Wisconsin edition is only for sale in the United States and it's dependencies.

One of the most beautiful travel books ever written.......2007-07-27
One of the most beautiful travel books and memoirs ever written; one of my favourite books ever.
Frustratingly Good.......2006-03-07
Cleopatra's Wedding Present is an account of the solitary wandering of a Briton through the back roads and alleyways of Syria. What draws this urbane, openly gay man to a country like Syria is a question that draws the reader immediately into the book. Fittingly, Moss begins his book not in Damascus, but in culturally and geographically isolated northern city of Aleppo. He makes his way through a maze of noisy, cluttered streets to the Baron Hotel, an establishment of fading glory, where notables such as Lawrence of Arabia and Theodore Roosevelt once stayed. In the hotel bar, he quickly meets a fellow Briton, Rupert, and becomes entangled with the comings and goings, and affections, of a few young Syrian men. Through Rupert, like himself, an outsider, a loner, and also attracted to Syrian men, Moss realizes that it is only natural for such strangers in a strange land to find in Syria a place to come to terms with one's strangeness.
Moss forays from Aleppo to other locations in Syria in chapters that begin abruptly, with Moss on the road to a new destination. In other locations, his experiences are similar in tone to that of Aleppo: A lonely man, part tourist, part journalist, and partly a man in quest of some ineffable longing, meets a few people in the new locale, and strikes up brief friendships before moving to the next destination. These vignettes of ordinary people, though, mainly young men, such as the ex-commando named Jihad, but also a variety of people, such as Gladys, the Christian florist recently repatriated from New York, are the highlights of the book. In these vignettes, Moss illustrates how everyday life in Syria is shaped by history, culture, and an oppressive political regime. Nonetheless, the characters Moss encounters are truly individual, never simple products of their environment.
Insightful, too, are the author's mediations on the longing that draws us to travel, and its counterpart heartache at leaving a place. "To travel is to always be to some extent in a state of bereavement, always to have somebody die on you a little," he writes. The fact that Moss was murdered on the day he finished the book, shortly after returning from Syria to London, is oft cited as reason to read this book. This would be a poor reason to read the book; however, his thought that "partir, c'est toujours mourir un peu," does take on added poignancy as a result of his death. To illustrate this theme of love and loss, Moss relates Rupert's doomed pursuit of Syrian boys, culminating in a letter to Rupert the Moss intercepts and steams open. He also relates the more successful, yet also more tragic, love affairs of the Victorian Mary Digby, whose final love, a sheik, brought her to Syria, where she would die. However, it is frustrating that Moss himself initiates a narrative that is personal, not only journalistic, and focused on desire, only to direct the reader's gaze away from himself. Moss speaks of the pain of parting, yet himself takes leave of all he meets in a cool and aloof fashion. The letter we wish he would open is his own, but this letter, scarce begun, remains sealed.
I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting an up close and personal look at life in Syria. From a literary aspect, Moss proves a talented writer, who intertwines elegy, elegance, and wit, in a style reminiscent of Evelyn Waugh. However, because of the disjointed narrative, and the frustration with this fascinating persona who begins his own tale several times, only to turn away from it, I found myself wanting to skim the best parts of the book and leave the rest, wondering how Moss might have rewritten it.
A languorous, yet exciting trip to a complicated land.......2004-02-17
This absolutely remarkable story brings to life the sights, sounds and smells - in all their beauty and ugliness - of Syria. The book recounts the journey of one gay man has he spends several months traveling around this complex and exotic country, which was actually part of Mark Anthony's love gift to Cleopatra. Robert Tewdwr Moss was tragically murdered in London just after this manuscript was completed, so he never got to realize the fruits of his labors. This is such a pity because Moss was an extremely talented writer, who had a wonderful capacity to totally reinvent travel writing. This memoir works in many ways - as a profound treatise on the Middle Eastern Society; a chilling history of ethnic crimes - particularly the Armenian genocide - a picaresque adventure story, a compelling travelogue, and a touching and affecting tale of sexual self-discovery.
Moss certainly captures the essence of the Middle East - from its indescribable poverty, and its government corruption to its chaos and the unconditional hospitality and uncomplicated generosity that is offered by many of the local people. The story begins with a description of the "hot winds," "the blinding heat," the "fine brown dust" from the dust storms, the "chaos of the streets and the air "clotted with diesel fumes hanging like a cloak around us." As the story progresses and Robert leaves the city of Aleppo to travel to Damascus, he infuses the narrative with descriptions of this suffocating yet exotic world: the dirty collapsing towns that have had a "great past and no present" full of "the old merchants you see here - sly, and leathery, survivors."
Moss had a gift for describing the intricate details of everyday life, from the clothes to the exotic foods, to the markets and bazaars, and of course, the Arab frankness towards sexual transactions, which "are regarded in a purely practical light." The text recounts Moss's trips to various ancient sites, and there are some gorgeous descriptions of the ancient towns of Palmyra, Bosra, and Lattakia (Have a map of Syria handy so that you can trace his journey). There's also an excellent introduction by Lecretia Stewart that fills in the blanks about Robert's life and work and talks, quite frankly about his horrific murder and about his somewhat closeted sexuality. Cleopatra's Wedding Present is profound and beautiful, and is without a doubt, one of the best travelogues of the Middle East that I have ever read. Robert Tewdwr Moss was a real talent, and as this story shows, his loss was just terrible.

Customer Reviews:
This Book Was Extremely Helpful!.......2007-03-06
I bought this book back in September of 2005, before taking any parts of the exams. When I began studying, I felt like I was going nowhere. I felt the information in my CPA study material was too much. I studied for about two months before I went on-line and searched for how to pass the CPA exam. I stumbled across this book and thought it was very helpful. It gave techniques on how to study and gave me confidence whenever I went in to take the exam.
I believe that this book should be read in college before a candidate sits for the CPA. My college did not talk a whole lot about the CPA exam (only the basics) so I really wasn't sure how to go about studying. This book is a great investment and informed me of how to use my study time well.
Also, I am happy to say that I have passed the CPA exam. I passed AUD, FARS, and BEC on the first try and it took me three time to pass REG (which was partly my own fault).
Good Luck!
This book can be used as your mentor to help you successfully pass the CPA exam........2007-02-05
What a wonderful book. It seems to have been written for a junior or senior in college who is majoring in accounting. I'm sure it will be very helpful to people on their journey to successfully tackling the CPA exam and getting licensed as a CPA. I found the text to be very informative since I passed the exam back in 1984 (law and theory) and 1985 (practice and auditing) when it was administered a little differently. I must say, though, that the exam experience described in the book sounds like it is still pretty much the same deal I sat through 20+ years ago.
I found out I passed the practice and auditing sections of the exam just two weeks before starting my first law school education. And when I completed law school three years later I sat for the New Jersey and Pennsylvania bar exams together. Taking those two exams was a joy ride compared to taking the CPA exam. And I passed both on the first try with minimal study.
The author in this book doesn't say it, but the reason the pass rates for the CPA exam are so low compared to the pass rates of bar exams is that it's not all that difficult to qualify to sit for the CPA exam. One could be a high school dropout, sneak into community college, and then transfer into a 4-year college that will give them an accounting degree. And they can graduate from college with a C average and still be allowed to sign up for the CPA exam. Exam applicants like that are more likely than not to pull the pass rate down. It's tough to get into law school. The screening process in the accounting profession rests with the CPA exam. In the legal profession the screening process is in the law school admission system - not in the bar exam system.
I think a freshman in college will benefit from this book even more than a junior or senior. This book is not just about passing the CPA exam like the title suggests. It is really about getting the CPA license, and a college freshman that wants to be a CPA some day should be very interested in what he or she will have to do to get that license. This book will tell them.
I would have liked the book better if it had not tried to make the CPA license sound so impressive. Sure, I'm very proud that I passed the CPA exam, but being a CPA isn't anything special. The guys that make the money in the corporate world are the guys with a sales background or financial analysts that rise up through the mergers and acquisitions departments. CPAs rarely become CEOs. If they are lucky they might become a CFO. Furthermore, all the time and effort required to maintain a CPA license is not worth it. But if you major in accounting in college, then you owe it to yourself to at least put the icing on your college degree by passing the CPA exam. To not do so would be like going to law school, graduating, and not passing a bar exam. 5 stars!
You Can Pass the CPA Exam : Get Motivated!.......2006-03-10
I enjoy reading this book. This book arrived in excellent condition in a timely and orderly fashion.
I will use Amazon to order CD's and/or DVD's in the future.
Good resource, a little outdated.......2006-02-27
I am about 3 quarters through this book. I plan on sitting for my first section in July. The book was obviously written just as the computer based version began... The book eludes to some things that may have changed in 2005 with the exam. This book is not for someone who has already mapped out a plan for studying. Although some of it is redundant and obvious. I have found some information to be valuable. I think it was worth the price.
Don' read.......2006-01-30
This book is out dated. All the information contained within it, is based on the old paper exams and not the new computer version. If they revise the book I would strongly incourage it, but until then stay away.

Book Description
Convenient collection of 60 patterns, specially designed to make machine quilting quick and easy. Featured are traditional feather designs, florals, geometrics, corners, borders, and many more. Includes clear, easy-to-follow instructions on machine stitching and other essentials. For quilters at all levels of expertise.
Customer Reviews:
definitely worth the price.......2005-10-28
i can agree with some of the other reviewers that these are not necessarily the most stunning machine quilting patterns available (for stunning, try joyce mori's books, the newest of which includes continuous line designs).
however, there is a nice balance of traditional, contemporary, and cutesy patterns, and the bonus of directional arrows for some of the patterns so that the quilter doesn't have to waste time tracing the correct pathway. these patterns may not be useful for an heirloom quilt, but they will be a great convenience for baby and childrens' quilts which are expected to disintegrate eventually. some are shown in one or two combinations and directions to demonstrate how they could be changed.
any beginner who works her way through these designs will definitely be ready for any machine quilting she wants. more experienced quilters will be able to find useful patterns and ideas.
Great beginning book for machine quilting.......2005-03-08
I've been making quilts--or rather quilt tops--for years. This affordable book gave me the info I needed to plunge into machine quilting. I just did my first design tonight and am very pleased with the results. There are probably books with more patterns and nicer patterns out there, but if you are just beginning, this book will tell you what you need to know and give you some patterns to start with at an unbeatable price. You can then experiment with this little volume and invest in more expensive books when you have "gotten the hang of it" and know which types of patterns you want more of. My appetite has been whetted.
Good Value.......2004-03-18
You may not use all of the designs; however, at this price, who cares. The patterns are easy to sew and are easy to transfer. Good combination of styles. This book has something for any beginner.
Traditional yes but not pretty.......2003-06-06
Yes the quilting designs are tradtional but they are not pretty
and they are very hard to do. (Harder than this beginner could manage at least :-( Instead I would recommend their other book, Amish Machine Quilting Patterns, which is just superb but is not a complete replacement for this one.
The best thing in both books is the intro of how to package, hold and transfer the designs. Great ideas here. What is particularly special about this one though is that it is very good in giving you projects on building your skills. These sections could be invaluable (they helped me with my regular sewing) and should not be skipped. (The Amish book does not have the same skill builder section. )
So this book is a mixed bag and had the designs been prettier I would have scored it higher particularly because of the skills section, but I consider the beauty aspect rather important. This is rather subjective so look at this book and see what you need more. For the price it's a great tutorial.
Traditional.......2002-03-30
This book is full of traditional mostly border designs. Very well-written directions. Can't wait to try them out.

Perfect Blocks in Minutes - Anita Grossman Solomon.......2007-07-18
Anita Grossman Solomon's instructions are terrific.
I'd given up on paper piecing until I saw her method on Simply Quilts. I'm anxious to put her technique into practice. She even responds to emails - - awesome!
Wonderful.......2007-04-11
This is the best quilt book I have ever bought in my 20 years in quilting. I find the processes to be revolutionary. This is saving a ton of time and frustration.
Perfect Blocks In Minutes.......2006-05-06
I love this book because it is so easy to understand and has so many different blocks to choose from. I wish I had found this book first.
Perfect Blocks in Minutes.......2005-09-25
Have just started paper piecing quilting & find this book very down to earth and understandable & user friendly.
Perfect Blocks in Minutes The Make It Simpler Way: Revolutionary Technique One-Piece Paper Foundations to Fold & Sew/60 Traditio.......2005-09-12
I love this book. It is so great for a beginner that has not done any paper piecing and great for anyone that has not done paper piecing by strips. The instructions are very clear; there are pictures to show "how to" for each step. THe patterns are clearly marked with strip cut sizes and even have arrows to show best direct to sew each strip. There are cutting instructions and multiple patterns. Would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how to work with foundation/paper piecing.

Have Energy, Can Manage........2007-03-24
I was browsing at the library when this book caught my eye. For several months I had felt Tired, to the point I was starting to get depressed about it. It was beginning to interfere with everything I did.
This book lists symptoms of not enough sleep and dehydration- now I'm sure I was suffering from both. Also listed were lots of good tips for getting more sleep. (I figured out how to drink more water by myself.) :) This is pretty basic, but so helpful! After all, a perfectly prioritized schedule is worthless if you don't have the energy to do your tasks.
Once you get your engine started, the author helps you feel a sense of accomplishment everyday by striking a dynamic bargain with yourself-
"What would it take for me to feel good about ending work on time today?"
He helps you determine long-term goals and break them down into plans with built in rewards and vacations. This is a good thing to know how to do. In the book, Get Hired Now! A 28-Day Program for Landing the Job You Want, a study is mentioned involving the 1979 Harvard MBA program. Students were asked, "Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?"
3% had written goals and plans
13% had goals, but not in writing
84% had no specific goals at all
10 years later...
the 13% who had goals were earning TWICE as much as the 84% who had no goals. The 3% who had clear, written goals were earning TEN times as much as the other 97% put together.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time outlines how to do what the 3% were doing.
I only give this 4 stars because I was perfectly happy to take 2 pages of notes and return it to the library- not something I'll reference frequently enough to buy, but still, a helpful book.
A word from the author.......2005-06-01
Dear Frazzled, Time-Pressed, Never-Have-an-Extra-Second Reader,
If freeing up oodles of time and breaking bad time-use habits is of interest to you, then read on--you have come to the right place. As the commercial goes, "You've got questions, I've got answers!"
Welcome to the third edition of the Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time. Understandably, this book is more useful than the second edition, and much more updated than the first. More than 160,000 of the first two editions are now in print. (I have always relied on the kindness of strangers--book buyers--to do their part: buy dozens and dozens of copies for your immediate family, best friends, and for special occasions such as graduation, weddings, funerals, retirement parties, baby showers, and Groundhog Day.)
Now, well into the 21st century, it's no secret that everywhere you look, for everyone you know, the pace of life has sped up and seemingly is getting faster all the time. Watching people drive SUVs as they speed around crowded intersections with one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the cell phone is not a pretty sight. The juggling and struggling of people seeking to get a lot of things done in a hurry makes for some questionable behaviors, some of them risky, some merely silly. All such behaviors are driven by the same basic notion--there is too much to do and too little time in which to do it.
I don't blame you if you're leery of tackling a large book. After all, this one contains more than 300 pages. Yet, once you start perusing the pages, you'll see that this is an easy read. I'm on your side; I did not create more work for you by making a text that is hard to read and whose advice is hard to apply. Each chapter tackles a particular issue related to the overall theme of managing your time.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time is loaded with insights and witticisms that ring true and that you'll be able to apply to the everyday issues you face. I don't lay on a ton of rules that you're supposed to memorize and apply around the clock. You don't need that kind of assignment--you're already very busy! Rather, I offer a handful of guiding principles that work in pretty much any situation, any time, for anyone who draws upon them.
My goal in writing this book is to offer you a solid framework for taking charge of your time by offering practical, commonsensical, fresh approaches for seizing control of your day, year, life, and maybe even your afterlife. You won't have to get up at 4:30 a.m., spend a small fortune, surround yourself with high-tech gadgets, or clone yourself.
If you're like most people, you want to finish your day's work and still have a life. You want to reclaim your weekends for leisure and fun-filled activities. You want to embark on invigorating, relaxing vacations. In short, you want to win back your time so that you can have a life!
Within these 27 chapters, there are dozens upon dozens of tips, suggestions, and recommendations. Not all of them will apply to everybody. Some may rub you the wrong way, some may be totally out of reach, and some may represent ideas that don't seem palatable to you. That's okay--what's vital is that there are enough tips and suggestions that do fit your scheme of doing things, that aid you in controlling your time, and that enhance the quality of your day.
When it comes to reading this book, you have lots of options! You can read the whole thing from cover to cover (the way I read books) and you'll do quite well. You will find the text to be witty, though entirely readable and hard-hitting. You have the option of reading a chapter at a time, not necessarily in chronological order. For example, you may have some burning issue that's addressed in one of the middle chapters of the book. In that case, plunge in right there! You can always go back to the earlier chapters. Take action where and when it makes the most sense.
You also have the option of dabbling. Open the book to any single page or paragraph at random and simply begin reading. I promise that you'll benefit no matter where you start because every page and passage is packed with high-octane insights and suggestions.
As you begin to master managing your time, subtly, almost imperceptibly, you'll experience positive, significant differences in your life. Indeed, the world takes on a totally different hue when you build some slack into your days and stay in control.
All the best to you on your personal and exciting journey to reclaiming your life, year, month, week, day, and now as you become a master at managing your time.
Finally managing my time wisely!.......2005-01-22
I was pleasantly surprised. At first I thought this was going to be a too light treatment to a topic that's important to me. Even though the author does take a humorous approach, I guess the whole series of idiot's guides takes a humorous approach, nevertheless, I found the tips to be hard hitting and practical. If I had this earlier in my career I might have saved a whole lot of time on stuff that for all practical purposes was a waste of time.
I don't know why the previous reader gave such a bad review, I think they were talking about another book!
returned it - preaches deceit; more fluff than substance.......2004-05-06
The author's target audience seems to be salaried employees working unpaid overtime, who are overweight, out of shape, watch too much TV and get too little sleep. His solution to the unpaid overtime is to lie to your employer and coworkers about how much you work at home, use oversized containers to take work home so it looks like more, schedule outside appointments late in the dy so you can just go home, etc. A lot of the book is aimed at helping people take better care of themselves and get their priorities in order, which I applaud. But that isn't what I was looking for in a time management book. I was looking for practical strategies for organizing my work and time, which it is thin on. It has some, and there are some very good ideas in there, but not really much more than a good magazine article.
A very useful book, far superior to others on this subject.......2003-03-22
I encountered the Dummy's version of Time Management and was of disappointed. It seemed like it was just one ad after and another for the various products that the author was touting. The Idiot's version of Time Management in comparison is devoted to the reader. I didn't detect that the author had any affiliations with any products or services, and even if he does, it doesn't come through in these pages. Instead, I encountered one chapter after another of sound logic, action steps, and encouragement. If the book is lacking in any area it would be on using technology to enhance your use of time. But, you can always make the argument that tools of technology change so fast, that such discussion is better handled in newspaper and magazine articles anyways. The bottom line, this is an excellent book on time management and certainly worth the time it takes to read it.

Book Description
Of all the revolutionary changes brought about by the industrial age perhaps the most extraordinary and far-reaching was the transformation of light. Scientists described its hidden laws to the public for the first time. Artists found radical ways of depicting it. Inventors found new ways of making it. The lives of ordinary people changed forever as streets, shops, theaters, and their own homes were brilliantly illuminated, first by gas, and then, even more dazzlingly, by electricity. The story is told here for the first time in its entirety. The book describes the inventions still with us, like electric light, the microscope, and photography, as well as arcane reminders of a vanished world, such as the heliostat, the lithophane, and the magic lantern. It portrays a revolution in the arts: Caspar David Friedrich depicting twilight, the Impressionists conjuring up sunlight. And it debates the changing symbolism of light: the meaning of the Enlightenment, the light of God's truth, the nightmarish light of the furnace by night. Above all, it delineates the changing lives of people. Setting masterpieces of painting alongside contemporary scientific instruments, theater paraphernalia, and domestic articles, Light! captures the history of human perception, understanding, and ingenuity. 195 color and 100 b/w illustrations.
Book Description
Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) has become, in the century following his death, a man on first-name terms with the world. His brief but eventful life has inspired the scrutiny of other painters, film-makers, psychologists and novelists, and his personal celebrity outstrips even the substantial fame of his works. While the popular appeal of such pictures as Sunflowers or Starry Night resides in their seemingly emotion-fuelled spontaneity, they are in fact the products of a reflective and idea-driven man who was profoundly interested in and inspired by all manner of literary, musical and artistic sources. Spanning his early work in the Netherlands, the formative years in and around Paris, and ending with the intense, vibrant studies of peasants and the countryside he produced in the south of France, this survey makes extensive use of Van Gogh's own correspondence to illuminate his artistic development and the personal vision that lies behind his work. The result is a balanced and sensitive account of this most innovative and influential of artists.Judy Sund teaches art history at Queens College, City University of New York. Her publications include True to Temperament: Van Gogh and French Naturalist Literature (1992).

Small Gem.......2003-03-13
"Masterpiece Studies" is one art historian's proposal to emphasize the influence of contemporary European music, primarily Wagner, on the production of three painters: Manet, Van Gogh and Monet. At the same time, Emile Zola's novel "L'Oeurve" is considered as Zola's reaction to the Impressionist "threat" to his realist sensibilities.
Manet's "Bar at the Folies-Berger" is a late masterpiece that challenges Zola, who will then create a failed version of Manet in his novel. Investigating Van Gogh's series of "La Berceuse" paintings, Champa explores how the series fits into the idea of "masterpiece" or "copies". Finally, Monet breaks down the single-masterpiece concept with his extended practice of painting series (cathedral, haystacks).
The depth of understanding about the subject(s) is rivalled only by the evident love Champa feels for his Studies.
