Pretty darn accurate.......2004-01-06

I must say, this book was very accurate for me. I followed the information in the book and was able to experience a very interesting country. I was able to eat at some rather delicious restaurants, I stayed at a wonderfully pleasant hotel and I saw beautiful attractions. The portable guidebook fit right in my back pocket too.

This is a misguiding guidebook of Berlin. Following this guidbook, I had to undergo constant frustration before I finallyy jumped in one of the Berlin bookstores and bought another guidebook in English. The explanations are truncated and ambiguous (unjustifiable even for a "portable" book), and the maps are either lacking, incorrect, or grossly mis-mapped (some restaurant locations and sights of interest); the total lack of some important places for tourists is especially inconvenient (Amex offices, major shopping areas, American Embassy, for instance). Such a basic fact as how the houses in Berlin are numbered should be mentiond in the book, or else tourists are guaranteed to have a hard time to find places; there should be far better and kinder explanations about how to exchange foreign currencies and to cash TC, and how much is the commission fee even for cashing TC (0 % to 19 % according to where you cash your TC). As a result, I got an impression that this guidebook was written by an author who does not know Berlin too well.

Read it in one night!.......2001-07-10

John Moriarty has been able to put down on paper what a lot of people are afraid to admit to themselves -- It's hard to fix yourself when you are so broken, but it is not possible. This book made me understand that I am not alone. It made me realize that the feelings that I have felt while growing up, growing into myself, were not unique. I would recommend this book to every kid growing up - regardless of their preferences or problems. We all need to remember that it's okay to screw up, it's okay to forgive ourselves for screwing up and we must never stop trying to get better at finding ourselves.

Packed full of information for a novice would-be painting contractor like me. It's a pity they have not updated it and done a reprint, because at one point it talks about typing up an invoice. No computer is ever mentioned. An updated edition would be wonderful. Still a great book for my purposes.

Written for painters trying to become contractors.......2006-06-10

If you don't know how to paint, but want to make money at it, don't buy this book. If you already know how to paint, but need help with business savvy, buy this book. Is it out of date? Yes, but it doesn't take a genius to read the 1985 imprint in the publishing info. We all know its out of date. However, what you'll get from this book isn't time sensitive.

What this book has that's timeless is an introduction into business for painters in a way we can understand it. It includes necessary forms that only need to be updated to your needs, semi-reliable man-hour tables, and info on marketing and costing. Just that much is well worth the purchase price.

If you want to start making money and building a business, buy this book. If you want to whine about not having enough work, and losing money on jobs, I can't stop you.

Just like any other book, this one isn't a silver bullet. I haven't seen any cost data book, or construction related book yet that I didn't have to update to my region, crews, special circumstances. You have to use your savvy with what this book gives you. Tanstaafl.

What are you looking for?.......2005-12-23

I'm a small painting contractor, been around several years, and I'll put my work up against anybody's. This book gave me some new ways of looking at things. This is the third book I've bought on paint contracting and it is by far the most common sense type book I've read. No, it isn't highly sophisticated. I wasn't looking for sophistication.

I wanted to read something written by someone with experience like my own, and this author has just that. Over the years I've developed several forms I use daily in my business. I remade two of mine using a lot of what he put into his examples.

Simple costing techniques, tips on how to survive up against the competition, the big companies with several crews and foremen employed. I don't ever aspire to be that kind of contractor. This is a fresh viewpoint and it gave me so much I am no longer looking for a painter's contracting manual. I found a lot of his times for painting different items to closely match my own.

There is a certain comfort in seeing that someone else is doing it like you are. But the tips and techniques he shares are great. Ever hear the term "too close to the forest to see the trees"?

If you are a small company, even a one person painter, you will definitely benefit from this book. The first tip you see will be well worth the price of this book.

Purely for beginners.......2001-03-16

After skimming through the book I found that it was hardly sophisticated as it was originally described. In fact what I read and saw was highly remedial and just plain common sense content. The book did not go beyond the very very basics of painting. I really don't know who I could recommend this book to. If you are seriously considering being a painting contractor this book would hardly prepare you.

Understanding the capacity of an at-risk child.......2007-06-27

I TOTALLY agree with the statement regarding Holding Therapy. This type of therapy was widely used in the 1980-1990 era to *treat* RAD children. We now know that this therapy is extremely harmful, and even outlawed in some parts of the USA. If we can IGNORE this portion of practice that the book refers to, then we might be able to extract the importance of dealing with at-risk children in unconventional ways, for these children are anything BUT conventional children. At-risk children have NOT been socialized according to the standards of society. While they LOOK normal, somewhat FUNCTION normal, and many times ACT normal, many have deep psychosocial issues. Society LOVES to cast social labels onto children that have not bonded properly, as *troubled kids* or *deviant kids*. This book UNDERSCORES the reasons at-risk kids cannot function as society expects by presenting FACTS that have led to their dysfunctional existence, as proven through research. At-risk children often times have been neglected and abused by primary caregivers who have not received help themselves for their own issues, but go on to have children. Please, READ BETWEEN THE LINES. Other helpful sources for understanding the peril of at-risk children are: Harry Harlow (monkey studies on neglect) and John Bowlby (attachment studies). Both men are pioneers in the field of attachment and neglect.

Be a critical reader!!!.......2007-02-27

This book is the largest compilation of studies ever done on the study of unattached children. Although it was published in 1980, still today it is the most in depth study to attachment disorders across the board. It may have outdated methods but critical readers know better than to not look beyond that. The theories about unattached children may not be answered but anyone working with children, or have any close relationships with children need to read this to understand why the attachment bond is so critical to a child's development, not only for the rest of the worlds sake but for the child's sake as well. All of my childhood development classes have had this book on the must read list for the last ten years.

It was as if a weight was lifted off us!.......2004-10-25

Thank you so much for putting into easy to understand words so that regular people will know what 'unattached' and 'unbonded' mean. We were dealing with many of those issues with a child we became guardians of. We knew something wasn't right but did not know what. We looked on the internet, talked with friends and family, asked at our local library for help. After reading 20 books on the subjects of adoption and foster parenting we finally came up with 'High Risk' and everthing came together. We were in shock at first until we read that not all psychopaths exhibit all the symptoms outlined in the book. Our child had many of them and we felt better because we became empowered by this knowledge and were able to move ahead and try to help him and our situation. I recomend this book to anyone who can read. It should be a must for anyone contemplating becoming a parent. Please help these children by not creating them first. Please help them by reading this book and taking the next steps.
The doctor tells us it will be years of therapy before he may bond again. Until then we will do whatever it takes to help him.
Good luck to those who suffer with this problem.

positively engaging children.......2004-05-15

As a personal life coach and elementary school teacher, I found this book extremely helpful for both parents and professionals who want to know more about high risk children and positive parenting. I have heard Dr. Magid speak and his personal approach with children is to positively engage them and to look at their strengths. Although he reported in the book about many different treatment processes, he did not endorse one over another, and I like the fact that he clearly discussed how early consistent love is the best treatment for children. His empathy for children in trouble and their frustrated parents is clearly evident to me.

holding therapy is dangerous.......2004-02-10

The "holding therapy" recommended in this book can result in the injury or even death of a child. While parents of adopted children with attachment disorder may need to seek the advice of a therapist, this is not the sort of therapy they should subject their child to. It is a shame that people can still purchase this book.
