Perfect Pocket-sized Copenhagen.......2005-09-21

This was perfect ! This being my very first time in Copenhagen, the map was just the right size, showed all the famous landmarks, along with restaurants with brief reviews, and of course not forgetting a detailed street map of the city, which I will admit, I got lost once, but this map showed me exactly where I was and not only how to get back on course, but also what was along the way, with info about the places and things I was seeing. For this price, I strongly recommend it to anyone ! Perfect price, and perfect size - it didn't make me look like a tourist carrying a huge fold-out map, precise, and concise.

Until it happens to you, its probably hard to relate, but in this beautifully written book, Wendy Sand Eckel has done an outstanding job of showing the process an entire family will go through when a child is diagnosed with dyslexia.

From the inability of the typical educational system to cope, all the way through to the light at the end of the tunnel using specialized educational methods to confront and overcome the dyslexia, in Educating Tigers you have a fly-on-the-wall perspective of what happens to the family dynamic. Effective ways to deal with any learning disability become readily apparent as you make your way through this entertaining and enjoyable book. It's an easy read.

Drawing on her own background in family counseling, Wendy Eckel does a great job with this book. I learned so much, and highly recommended it.

I got a preview copy of Educating Tigers and once started, I couldn't put it down. WSEckel hits all the emotions that give a great read. If you feel like thinking, laughing, crying, and experiencing the feelings associated with family dynamics, give this a try. I'm already looking forward to the next one from this author.

This is a fun story, despite the serious issues it raises. It is a common story among millions, but a story that has never been told so well. With up to 20% of the population affected by dyslexia (and 100% of those families!) this story should be read by every educator, by every parent of a child with a learning difference, and by every mother, no matter how "perfect" your child is. The story transcends dyslexia and reaches to the basic structure of families and relationships. While not the book I would choose for an adult gerbil-keeper, it would be great for kids who want to get their first gerbils. The info is very basic and the pictures are cute. There are some care tips that I wouldn't follow (like cleaning the bedding only every 3-4 months) but as a whole it's a quality book for children who want to learn more about gerbils.

I came across this book at a local craft shop and quickly became enthralled by the beautiful projects. I have never done ribbonwork before nor even thought about doing it. But once I saw this book I very much wanted to learn!

This book covers how to get started and has many different levels of projects. I am going to start small with one simple flower and learn as I go along. Directions seem simple and easy to follow.

The photographs in the book are so beautiful, I like to sit back and just flip through them enjoying the era of days gone by. Also, the author (Helen Gibb) has a wonderful source guide in the back which includes her own website.

Her love of the antique handwork is evident and her work is tasteful and eye appealing. This book is really one of the best I have read about ribbon work. I do have Helen's other book on Ribbon Flowers also.Just could not wait for her Ribbonwork. I looked it over cover to cover and want to make everything in the book.She has a wide variety of heirlooms to make and they are fantastic. An Invaluable Resource for those facing Breast Cancer.......2007-10-14

When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago, this was one of the first resources we found. Dr. Love has dedicated herself to both research, healing and writing about breast cancer. In my mind she has done an admirable job.

This is not an easy read, nor is it always easy to understand what Dr. Love is saying. The book is replete with medical terminology and processes. Yet if one is to beat or even understand breast cancer, this information is indispensable.

We live in the triangle area of North Carolina where there are many excellent cancer resources, yet this book almost always matched the excellent medical advice we got, even when my wife's tumor was so complicated that it required outside expertise from Sloan-Kettering in NY and an expert at Vanderbilt Univ in TN.

Make no mistake, it was tough plowing through the arcane terminology. But my wife's life depended on it. Dr. Love's discussion of the choices a woman must make was both insightful and compassionate and a good ancillary resource in the process we both went through. While I am far from a medical expert, I think this book is the bible of resources on the subject. I could not recommend it more highly.

This is the most complete and readable book on the breast. If you are diagnised with breast cancer, this book is the one to buy. You don't have to read it from cover to cover but you can find the section pertaining to your needs. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer almost ten years ago, a friend brought me this book. I have since bought it for several other friends.

I bought this book for a good friend of mine who was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The book was suggested to me by my mother who just underwent a double mastectomy. My friend is very thankful for this book. She told me it has helped tremendously with questions she has about her condition and treatment options.

So while I haven't personally read this book, I would defiantly recommend it to anyone who has the tragedy of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Blanche Lazzell, an American, Provincetown artist, printmaker, and master of the White Line printmaking method. This is a MASSIVE book, almost 2 inches thick, and it covers the usual artists biography, early years in art, and the developed years. It has many color photos of prints and paintings, and a good explanation about how images were abstracted, and composed, using a cubist or modernist manner. the "art-world" has a lot to thank, as this unique vision in printmaking can claim to be the only original woodcut printmaking method/technique developed in the U.S. If you like cubisim, buy this book. If you appreciate woodcut printmaking, buy this book. If you have a love for artwork of the teens, 20s, and 30s, buy this book,..it will make a great addition to your growing collection of books on artists as printmakers.

On March 14, 1948, Douglas Hyde handed in his resignation as the news editor of the London Daily Worker and wrote "the end" to twenty years of his life as a member of the Communist Party. A week later, in a written statement, Hyde announced that he had renounced Communism and, with his wife and children, was joining the Catholic Church.

The long pilgrimage from Communism to Christ carried Douglas Hyde from complete commitment to Marxism, to a questioning uneasiness about Soviet Russia's glaring contradictions of ideology and action, to a final rejection of the Party.

In Dedication and Leadership, he advances the theory that although the goals and aims of Communism are antithetical to human dignity and the rights of the individual, there is much to be learned from communist methods, cadres and psychological motivation. Hyde describes the Communist mechanics of instilling dedication, the first prerequisite for leadership. Here is the complete rationale of party technique: how to stimulate the willingness to sacrifice; the advisibility of making big demands to insure a big response; the inspirational indoctrination; and the subtle conversion methods.

In this small book, so large with implications, Douglas Hyde comments on both Communist and Catholic potential and their lack of maximum effectiveness. He advocates positive Catholic action, not just a negative anti-Communism, and he points out that the guidelines are now down for a decisive choice between total Communism and a total Christianity.

This is an interesting book that shows the potential in the recruiting and training tactics of the communist party. It shows how leaders, particularly Christian leaders, expect too little from their members and get what they expect. The principles in this book match those taught in college courses on education: to set the bar high and people will live up to what you expect; if you expect little, you will get little.

You Will Need Multiple Copies of this Book.......2003-11-16

In the first three quarters of the twentieth century, communism moved from a minority political movement in a few European countries to become a major political force with over a third of the world's population under its sway and signficant intellectual influence even in the countries that remained most opposed to it. Douglas Hyde was one of those who diligently to further its influence. In 1948, he surprised his friends and enemies alike by resigning his position as editor of the London based communist paper the Daily Worker and converting to Roman Catholicism with his family.

This book grew out of a series of lectures he conducted that tried to explain the successes of Communism to a Christian audience and to answer the question "Is there anything in Communist methods that can be adapted to serve nobler causes?". The answer to that question is an emphatic yes. Hyde strips away the preconceptions of how Communists recruited and motivated party workers and how they developed them into leaders capable of developing other communist workers.

The main theme of the book is contained in the title. According to Hyde, dedication is a prerequisite for true leadership. The communists had a well defined purpose that every communist could understand and believe in: the hope of a Communist world. In pursuit of that goal, members were asked to make great sacrifices. Rather than driving people away, this demand draws out the idealistic element in them and inspires the sort of dedication needed.

Hyde develops this theme in a number of ways. He discusses how short term campaigns worked, how party education worked, how members were encouraged to excellence in other areas of their life in order to give the communist message credibility with non-Communists.

Looking at the state of communism today, one might question whether there is any value in this book after all. Indeed, Hyde faced the same question himself in the late 80s and refused a reprint of the book because he thought that communist commitment was no longer what was described in the book. In my opinion, the failure of communism was due to its successes proving its invalidity, not to the methods by which it had enjoyed those earlier successes. Militant Islam seems to be the ascendant ideology of our times, and to the limited degree that I am aware, it seems like the Islamists are employing similar techniques. If we are wise, we will choose to learn from them rather than dismissing them outright.

This is one of those rare books that demands the purchasing of multiple copies. You will want to keep one for yourself with all your underlinings and notes, and keep at least one to lend out. Any sort of organisation could benefit from the lessons to be learned here, but Hyde's message is chiefly to Christians. Any believer distressed about the weak impact his church is having should immediately read this book.

Truly, a transformational book.......2003-08-04

This is truly a fascinating book. In it, Mr. Hyde takes us into the inner working of the Communist Party in which he was a member for more than twenty years. With utter clarity, he shows us that the dedication of the average communist worker was not the result of brain washing, but was the result of exceptional leadership. Throughout this excellent book Hyde contrasts the weak and anemic leadership styles of the church with its corresponding weak following, to the strong leadership of the Communist Party and their dedicated following.

I was especially impressed by the first part of the book where Hyde takes the reader step by step though the process by which a young communist recruit is trained to be a leader of men. High expectations (you are joining an elite organization) and high purpose (you are going to make a difference in the lives of men) combine to get to form the foundation of dedication. The only apparent weakness of the book is it's "Britishness." The Brits do write in a style that is difficult for their American cousins to follow.

This book is transformational. Everything I have learned about leadership dove tails right into what Hyde is saying: The need for public witness, ministry before training, life application teaching, strict accountability, high expectations, beginning with felt needs, a commitment o excellence, are all themes common to great leadership.

Single-minded Dedication.......2002-06-11

The best book on leadership I've read. Douglas Hyde, a british ex-communist leader, exposes the methodological success of Communism. He doesn't delve into Communism's ideological fallacies (although alluded to). He rather lays out communistic functions that led to it's incredible growth in such a short period of time. Throughout the book he comments on both Communist and Chritian potentials that culminates in the choice between total Communism or total Christianity. One of the most intriguing chapters is "The Story of Jim." Hyde told those in a Communist leader seminar that the Communist party could take anyone willing to be trained in leadership and make a leader. Corn occupied an important place in the lives of many Native communities that lived along the Upper Missouri River. In this landmark book, George F. Will and George E. Hyde introduce readers to some fifty varieties of native corn discovered in the Missouri Valley. Equally important, they provide an indispensable overview of Indian agricultural techniques there, including methods of harvesting and storing the crop, the preparation of corn for food, and the role of the crop in intertribal and Indian-white trade. Corn was not only grown, traded, and eaten, it also had spiritual significance. A final contribution of this book is a discussion of the presence and value of corn in American Indian myth, religion, and ritual.

Interesting book.......2007-06-04

If you are a gardener, are interested in Native American culture, and especially if you are both, you may value this as highly as I do. Through interviews with surviving women who remembered the details of their tribes' agricultural methods, and the way of life/religion that went with them, the authors have made an important contribution in an area that was undervalued at the time (the early 1900's). But thank goodness they had the foresight to put this information to paper. The book describes tools, varieties, planting methods, and agricultural customs of the Upper Missouri tribes. Thanks to the authors' preservation work, and the work of others, some of the varieties mentioned can still be found. If you are interested, google up the Seed Saver's Exchange in Iowa, and add a new dimension to your gardening.

Born in 1963, Swiss painter Caro Niederer is one of the most exciting painters of her generation. She first gained attention with her small, vividly colored, figurative oil paintings executed from personal snapshots. Since 1984, she has produced a series of photographs of interiors documenting the context in which her works were hung by their purchasers. In 1997, Niederer turned to larger formats, largely eliminating color from her paintings, and creating works in deep tones of sepia. Her recent series of works shown here features soft-focus color photos of idyllic holiday settings--from seashore and mountain scenes, to exotic pagodas.
