    Book Description

The halophytes are highly specialized plants, which have greater tolerance to salt. They can germinate, grow and reproduce successfully in saline areas which would cause the death of regular plants. Most halophytic species are found in salt marsh systems along seashores or around landlocked inland lakes and flat plains with high evaporation. The halophytes play a very significant role in the saline areas specially in the coast by overcoming the salinity in different ways, viz. with regulating mechanisms in which excess salts are excreted and without regulating mechanism, which may include succulents or cumulative types. Besides that they protect coasts from erosion and cyclones, provide feeding ground and nursery for fish, shrimps and birds. Halophytes get increasing attention today because of the steady increase of the salinity in irrigation systems in the arid and semi-arid regions where the increasing population reaches the limits of freshwater availability. In many countries, halophytes have been successfully grown on saline wasteland to provide animal fodder which have the potential for rehabilitation and even reclamation of these sites. The value of certain salt-tolerant grass species has been recognized by their incorporation in pasture improvement programs in many salt affected regions throughout the world. There have been recent advances in selecting species with high biomass and protein levels in combination with their ability to survive a wide range of environmental conditions, including salinity.

      5 out of 5 stars A true CLASSIC.......2002-07-20

The maps in this book are worth the purchase price alone.

The book was origionally published in the mid 1970s, so some of the information about put in and take out points is out of date. The rivers and streams themselves have changed very little, so the detailed maps in the book will give you a blow-by-blow description of what to expect on you adventure.

While there is a lot of information about the Cahaba River, none of the other Alabama rivers and streams are neglected...the Cahaba River is just a great river to canoe, and it rightfully claims an appropriate amount of space in the book.

I purchased this book before I ever baught a canoe, and it has helped me to enjoy trips down the Cahaba Rive, the Sipsey Fork, the Little Fork, and the Mulberry Fork to name a few.

If you own a canoe and live in Alabama (or are just interested in the subject), BUY THIS BOOK.

      2 out of 5 stars Misnamed Book.......2001-07-09

This book should be named Cahaba River Canoe Rides & Float Trips. It focuses primarily on the Cahaba and deals little with the rest of the state. We were disappointed and are still looking for a good book on canoeing the entire state of Alabama.

5 out of 5 stars If you own a canoe and live in Alabama, BUY THIS.......2000-04-19

In this book, Foshee gives scouting reports of many rivers and creeks in Alabama. It includes maps to put ins and take outs, and brief comments on difficulty of put in and take out. Also included are distances of each section of each river reviewed as well as river maps showing the "big stuff." For each section, Foshee describes possible problem areas. These are very helpful in planning a trip and can save you from exposure to numerous hazards. In each section, Foshee gives brief descriptions about scenery.

The only problem with this book is that many of the road maps are outdated. Some put ins and take outs are no longer accessible while many areas now have better ins and outs than those in the book. And many road names have changed since the book was written. Despite being a little outdated, maps are still very helpful, espcially when used along with a more detailed topo map. Of course, the river maps pretty much still apply becuase many of the rivers haven't changed all that much.

This book will help you find new places to go and will help determine distances of trips. Anybody who goes canoeing in Alabama should own this.

      5 out of 5 stars Dynamic Parallels.......1999-12-31

Joe Leininger provides great insight in his daily efforts to be both a good and Christian person with his success as a commodities trader.

Few businessess are as brutally competitive as trading in Chicago exchanges. However, with great faith and works, Joe obviously holds to his strong Christian values in this tough environment.

This book helps me come to grips with striving for success while hoping to maintain the fundamental value of helping and loving one's fellow man (or woman).

5 out of 5 stars I think this book was great, and one of a kind........1999-08-28

Lessons From the Pit was a very fasinating and involving book. It is obvious that Joe Leininger spent a lot of time thinking and planning this book. This book is not one where the first chapters are interesting. The whole story is interesting. I kept saying to myself "at the end of the chapter, I will go to sleep, but I just couldn't put it down! He talked about personal subjects also, making you feel like you were just talking to him, alone. I highly recommend this book, and I think that Lessons From the Pit was the best book I have read so far.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must if you aspire to greatness in business.......1999-08-07

An excellent picture of how to live a balanced life and besuccessful at it. Especially applicable to those in the financialfield, but applies to all of us who desire to excel in our field. Joe's personal experiences in such a high pressure environment serve as poingant lessons. Take advantage of this book as a roadmap on the path to success.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent life advice.......1999-07-26

Under the guise of being about trading securities, this is an excellent book about life, about observing what work gives you and what it deprives you of. About making changes that lead to a richer life and how to know when work costs too much. It also offers wonderful insights into the life of a trader and the paradox of being a good trader and trying to balance that with being a good Christian.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and insightful book about values and business.......1999-07-17

Joe has done a good job of taking interesting stories from his life and distilling an excellent life-lesson from each. Joe's life comes through clearly in this well written collection. He is transparent and engaging. Not only does it draw us to examine our inner health and values, but to look to our own stories for the lessons hidden in them. Worth a plane flight to read it.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Waste of $$$.......2006-01-05

This is a badly written book due to the attempt of using Ivy League elucidations for topics that should be told straightforward in terms of simple language. It also doesn't help to use end-of-the-book topics as examples or part of discussions in the early part of the book. In the end, this book causes more damage and confusion for someone attempting to learn the basic concepts of accounting for the first time.

      2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad.......2005-10-28

Antle, being caught up in his own Yale-educated thesaurus, fails to explicitly reiterate Financial topics that may be lost to less familiar students. Fortunately, I had another book on the same topic that served as a mentor through a horrid and fast paced class on said suibject, while this one failed miserably. It also is missing certain topics that other books cover.

3 out of 5 stars not for beginners.......2005-10-24

I bought this book mainly due to its conciseness(350 pages of text), since I'm a computer science student and only hope to get some basic ideas on accounting. However, I find it takes even longer to get through this book than a double-sized, but friendly-written textbook. I have to admit the accuracy and conciseness of the way that definitions and explanations are given; unfortunately, those words are no more comprehensible than the GAAP lines. Real-world financial reports are given from beginning to end, but lacks clear explanations, leaving readers pondering over the exact meaning of each newly-confronted item. It does have merits, and that's the emphasis on the correspondence between economic and accounting concepts, which is more profound than most other books. Maybe this book is a good refresher, but it's definitely not for novices. I hope it hadn't been my first accounting book. Frustrated, I turned to another book written by Horngren (Financial Accounting and Cisco Report Package, 8e), and that turns out to be the right primer for me

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Honest Book on Making a Living in Crafts...........2007-10-03

This is the best of the artist books on how they and others have made it in the art world - successfully! It is inspirational and yet honest. Testimonies by other artists add interest, especially since they work in varied media. Tips on how to make it and yet develop a thick-skin for particular situations added to the usefulness in motivating any artist. The quality of the book is impressive, from the type of paper, images, and resources, making it a reference that I can use for many years to come.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-07-20

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-09

This book is excellent for tips and ideas on how to get started on a home crafting business. My favorite part about the book is that it tells you what you need to do to get licensed, what steps to take to get there, and how to submit the information. I would highly recommend this book to anyone just thinking of selling thier homemade treasures.

        5 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS GUIDE!.......2006-10-28

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in making a living selling their creations. Mr. Clark provides a complete guide with the information neccessary to help artists reach their potential. From the basics of consignment to desirable ways to sell and market your crafts, he has thoughtfully included it all. By implementing what I've learned in this book, we are well on our way to making a living doing what we love to do, in less than a year! Thank you, Donald Clark!

        5 out of 5 stars It's about time!.......2006-06-02

It's about time this book was written. I found it insightful and thoughtfully written. Donald Clark has presented the world of marketing and selling your craft to the novice in a way that makes sense of it all. From the wonderfully asthetically pleasing layout to the expert perspectives this book was a joy to read. The advice given is advice that I will take to heart as I enter the business of making art. Hopefully, I will be as successful as the artists that are fortunate enough to be represented by Donald Clark. This book is a must for anyone who has thoughts of entering this world and looking for truth of how to make that happen.

1 out of 5 stars You can judge this book by it's cover.......2004-04-14

This may be the worst Bonsai Book ever written. The tree on the front cover is a prime example of what a Bonsai tree is not supposed to look like. The tree is a young Ficus with no taper to the trunk. The branches grow straight up and the style is all wrong. Most importantly are the horrible scars on the branches from leaving the wires on too long. The book is very generic and really doesn't give enough information to create a heathly and well trained tree. If you have shown enough interest in Bonsai to pursue more information on the Art of Bonsai then you have already outgrown this book. Avoid this book, and buy a tree instead.

4 out of 5 stars Good introductory indoor bonsai book.......2001-02-07

As stated in the title this book is about indoor bonsai, or more precisely how to grow and maintain tropical bonsai indoors. It doesn't contain much info on non tropical species, which are more appropriate to growing outdoors. There are many beautiful pictures that will inspire the beginning bonsai artist to create masterpieces of their own. Highly recommended beginners book.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of Dull.......2000-08-30

While the book offers information on some indoor and partially indoor species, I was looking for a book with more species information. The pictures were not all that great and the book in general appeared boring. It was more concise that what I was looking for. The book lacked many species that I was interested in, such as: Camphor, Baobab, Banyan, Coffee, Bald Cypress, and Buttonwood. I have ordered Bonsai in your Home: An Indoor Grower's Guide, and hopefully that will have the information I need.

5 out of 5 stars This book is my Bonsai trees' best friend........2000-06-25

I would recommend this book to every first time bonsai owner. I'm sure that if my current trees could speak, they would thank me for reading this book prior to making my bonsai selection. My first bonsai tree did not fair so well. It appears I did everything wrong the first time around. First I selected an out door tree for an indoor garden. I did not know when to trim the tree or how to fertilize. I thought all bonsai needed the same care guidelines. I was very wrong and the tree died.

I love the section on individual tree care. Now when I find a bonsai that I love, I just pull out my copy of Indoor Bonsai for Beginners: Selection, Care, Training, and find out if the tree will thrive in the location I have available. If not, I do the tree a favor and leave it for someone who has the proper location.

Thanks to this book I know which trees will fair well in an office window with only the morning sun. I know to have a drip tray, sprayer and other supplies waiting for the trees to arrive. I know to find out when the bonsai was last transplanted and fertilized. This book is definitely my Bonsai Trees' best friend and a MUST READ for anyone thinking about owning a bonsai. Just do your tree a favor and read it before you make your tree selection.

Photos are uninspiring, if not misleading. All the trees pictured resemble twigs thrown between undefined rocks with no thought to shape, movement, intent or design.

Content wise, misdirection and vagueness are the only quality offered. The reader will learn very little, and what they may learn isn't correct.

While the author is undoubtedly a talented bonsai gardener, and may well be a good teacher 'at the elbow', his informal jargon may leave the reader puzzled, and his concept of 'dimensional drawings' for tree planning is still unclear, despite numerous example drawings.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to introduce a beginner to Bonsai.......2002-11-17

I found this book a wonderful read. Excellent information, not too lengthy in detail but concise and intelligent. No information overload. Just the very thing to get a beginner interested in starting Bonsai. Sound techniques and a very friendly read throughout. The sections are well laid out and in my opinion, the book acts like a teacher of Bonsai was just behind me when I am working on my Bonsai. I have been keeping Bonsai for two years now and this was exactly the kind of book I was looking for-a book to take me from the elements to intermediate. I have seen this excellent teacher twice now and I have been inmpressed with his teaching abilities. This is clear in his writing. Succinct, to the point and no faffle! This beautifully illustrated book must obviously make one or two other Bonsai writers very jealous.

5 out of 5 stars A very good Bonsai Book.......2002-11-15

This book is excellent when it comes to giving beginners to Intermediate growers information on basic techniques. I am a Bonsai grower of nearly ten years and I wanted to review this book after reading some of the other reviews. Its clear that Craig Coussins has worked to keep such information at the introduction level and he succeeds extremely well. His section on watering, for example, does not cover bad, old fashioned techniques such as full pot immersion, which, on most trees, disturb the soil and cause damage to the fine feeder roots that need to develop in a Bonsai. He discusses proper soil requirements for most types of Bonsai. And their various needs. In a simple way and not a complicated way, unless you find such things complicated of course. He uses clear and well-tried techniques to explain the best way forward. He can not cover all species in such a book of course, after all who can, but he goes a long way towards this by explaining the general techniques for most popular species in many climates. His understanding of techniques can be applied to both indoor and outdoor trees and he discusses that in some detail. His second book, Totally Bonsai is very much a beginner's book and works well, in addition to Bonsai for Beginners which is designed to take the beginner from start to intermediate standard. Apart from being a reference book it is also a very will planned book and easy to follow and easy to read. I can not wait for his next book, Bonsai School, that he mentions on his web site.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing at best........2002-10-26

I found this book to be somewhat disappointing at best. The positive reviews that other people wrote were misleading. This book should certainly not receive 5 out of 5 stars! I myself am a beginner to bonsai, and found this book to be quite unacceptable in terms of actually instructing the beginner. In fact, after purchasing this book I was immediately inclined to go purchase another book that had more explicit instructions for different bonsai.

First off, this book contained detailed information on only a few species of trees. In general, the information presented is put out in such away that it implies all deciduous trees and all coniferous trees should be treated the same way. It doesn't even mention tropical trees, which is what I have found beginners should really be focusing on in terms of learning the basic skills required to care for a tree with a dormancy period.

Second, this book contains information that is in no way aimed towards a beginner in bonsai. The different case studies in this book include planting established bonsai in forest-like groups, performing extremely severe pruning on established trees, grafting, etc. None if this stuff is at all basic, and therefore should not be included in a book that is sopposedly geared towards beginners

Finally, this book contains information that is very poorly presented. There are certain sections of parts of the book which don't even explain what they are talking about. Coussins will explain basic procedures to complicated processes of which the reasoning for performing the procedure is not even explained. Basically, I don't even know what he is doing and why; he will explain the process, briefly, despite this. Additionally, he does not even discuss the immersion method of watering, which is the most convenient method of watering indoor plants. This is indicative of his complete lack of thouroughness on writing about bonsai.

This book does contain some great pictures, and SOME basic procedures to basic principles. However, Coussins leaves out a great deal of necessary information, and includes information that is in no way necessary; i found a good deal of this book to be completely useless to me as a beginner in bonsai. I could not recommend this book to anyone who is beginning bonsai.

5 out of 5 stars The nicest book I have read about Bonsai.......2002-01-31

"Now and again in Bonsai, or indeed any other art form, comes along someone who not only knows how to do this art but also, and more importantly, knows how to teach this art."

Bonsai for Beginners is much more that a simple beginners book. It takes you form the beginners points of reference up to intermediate standard in Bonsai. I am a beginner to intermediate grower and I was astonished at the breadth of information in this truly wonderful book. It is the most lavishly illustrated book on the subject that I have seen and I was riveted to the pages as it is a very easy to follow text. The step by step is practical in every sense and the subject matter made me want to go out and try them immediately.
Now and again in Bonsai, or indeed any other art form, comes along someone who not only knows how to do this art but also, and more importantly, knows how to teach this art. Craig Coussins is such a person and I would heartily recommend his writing to anyone that truly wishes to understand the subject.

        5 out of 5 stars r42thebar@aol.com.......2001-06-02

Bonsai for Beginners is a superb book written by someone that obviously knows their subject. Unlike many other Bonsai books, this book shows you through many examples methods of achieving excellent results from this `art'. The photographs are simply amazing and I have never seen so many in a Bonsai book before. There are close on approaching 450 in this volume and while there is a lot of text, the text is easy to read and follow. In fact, I found myself sitting down and reading what I thought was a reference book. The quality of the writing is almost novel in its structure and very riveting. If you want to know how to make Bonsai then this is, without any doubt, the book for you. As you develop your Bonsai skills, you go to some of the slightly more advanced sections such as taking a cascade style, where the Bonsai foliage is cascading down over the pot and below the table and turning it upside down to make a wonderful informal upright tree shape. You really have to see this to appreciate it. The core of this book is its excellent series of step-by-step photographs covering all the techniques such as potting, pruning and root pruning, subjects that usually scare the pants of many a beginner. Scattered throughout the book are many wonderful examples of Bonsai from Craig Coussins own collection and prize specimens from a number of other Bonsai collections.

Craig Coussins shows you in a clear and concise way all the techniques that fill you with confidence to try these techniques for yourselves. Not only a `best buy' but also a truly necessary purchase if you are interested in Bonsai.

The pressures of modern living make it all too easy to become disconnected from our families, both geographically and psychologically. Embarking on a project to capture your loved ones on tape will not only bring everyone closer together in the here and now but will create a legacy of memories for future generations. Under the sage guidance of Mary LoVerde in Touching Tomorrow: How to Interview Your Loved Ones to Capture a Lifetime of Memories on Video or Audio, we learn how easy (if time-consuming) it can be to help family members open up, share memories, and reveal hopes and dreams, and how to record these interviews on video- or audiotape.

From overcoming resistance to making the speaker feel comfortable, and getting it all recorded to making this heirloom-to-be uniquely your own, LoVerde offers instructions and tips as well as moving recollections from those who have participated in the process. LoVerde's extensive lists of questions are perfectly geared to get the whole thing rolling, and even if your discussions never reach the taping stage, you'll gain valuable insights and hear touching remembrances from your own loved ones just from trying out the interview procedures. --Amy Handy

Baron Haussman was the famous 'architect' of modern Paris and has been little covered in history: enter Carmona, a biographer who sets the architect's life against the backdrop of 19th-century European society and history. A fine balance between biography and history is created in a survey of Haussmann's involvement in civic life as an administrator, and his influence on Paris politics and structures.

Recently, I was looking for a book about Georges-Eugene Haussmann because of a long time interest in Paris, and when you come to speak of how it developed, that is a name that you just cannot ignore. The book hasn't been out for so long, so I took a gamble in buying it (no reviews were posted pretty much anywhere).
The first part of the book is about Haussmann and how he climbed up the ladder in the civil service (without losing sight of any of the cultural or historical background), when the following parts of the book focus more on Haussmann's time in Paris and the changes he made there (what it should be about). The only comment you can give on this part is that the maps in the back of the book are not enough to understand the bigger picture. I don't know whether this should be included in the book or whether the writer should have recommended the reader to buy a detailed plan de paris. He didn't say that so that's the star that's missing, but short of that, I think it's the perfect book you can buy about Baron Haussmann, his plans to change Paris and the cultural circumstances surrounding it.
