Book Description
A blow-by-blow unearthing of the places where the Beat writers first came to full bloom: the flat where Ginsberg wrote "Howl;" Gary Snyder's zen cottage in Berkeley; the ghostly railroad yards where Kerouac and -Cassady toiled; the pads where Jack & Neal & Carolyn lived; Ferlinghetti's favorite haunts. This meticulous guide also brings to light never-before-heard stories about Corso, Bob Kaufman, DiPrima, Kyger, Lamantia and other West Coast Beats. A entertaining read as well as a practical walking (and driving) tour that covers the entire Bay Area. With an introduction by Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Bill Morgan is a painter and archival consultant working in New York City. He is the author of The Beat Generation in New York: A Walking Tour of Jack Kerouac's City.

San Francisco before things changed........2003-07-16
I lived in The City from '67 to '73 and was there during the heyday of Haight Ashbury and the mammoth explosion of all that was pre-Altimont but for some strange reason Beat San Francisco was far more important in my memory than The Haight. The reasons probably have much to do with why I finished Morgan's short book in only a day because I became so involved in his descriptions of the places that I considered my San Francisco-all of Upper Grant after it crosses Columbus with Caffe' Trieste and the New Pisa and of course City Lights, Discovery and Vesuvio with Tosca watching from the other side of the street.
Even though I now live on the other side of the planet, these places are burned into my memory. They're memories of cold winter evenings searching for the inevitable bargain in Discovery and then going next door to City Lights to troll through its basement looking at all the titles that I wanted but couldn't afford as a student. And on Saturday afternoons going into Trieste and buying a cafe' and knowing that not so many years ago this place was the epicenter for guys that wore old berets, had beards and thought.
I am indebted to Bill Morgan for writing such a heartwarming look back at a time and place that will go on in the hearts of Americans that realize there was a recent time when things could have gone another way. It didn't happen but with people like him keeping the memory alive and people who care enough to take pictures of City Lights for people like me who remember- perhaps all has not been lost.
Buy the book and revisit these modern American icons before they are redeveloped.

Book Description
Herbert Hoover had a lifelong passion for fishing, beginning in his boyhood. The sport gave relief from first the pressures of business and civil service and later the presidency. He fished throughout the United States, in California, Oregon, Key West, and North Carolina; founded the Cave Man Camp, a spot for powerful Republicans at Bohemian Grove, north of San Francisco; and had a hideaway near the Upper Rapidan River in Virginia, where he could fish for trout as an escape from the stress of Washington, D.C. In the last year of his life, he wrote a small book about fishing. Includes never-before-published photos and an interview by Senator Hatfield, who spent time at Bohemian Grove.

Many facets of a complicated man.......2005-10-07
Wert has uncovered the complex , intriguing life of Herbert Hoover. Hoover's energy, verve, and even joie de vivre is revealed in anecdote after anecdote. While the book is a great fishing adventure, following Hoover from youth to old age on nearly every fishing outing he undertook, in the background is subtle political history and commentary that tells an enormous amount about Hoover's character and political savvy . Most interesting is the way we are shown the behind-the-scenes shenanigans of powerful political figures.
The book is superbly researched and well annotated and illustrated. A great read.

Book Description
As a hospice nurse Marilyn Azevedo had seen how disease could ravage a person's body and spirit, and how it could cripple friends and family with grief. She knew about life and death. Yet, nothing could prepare her for the journey she would face when her youngest child, Andy, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 16.
In this powerful memoir, readers share Azevedo's painful journey-from the days when she felt strong and powerful, to the days she just wanted to stay in bed and pull the covers over her head. But Azevedo's battle is more than a fight for her son's life as she takes on the health insurance bureaucracy and lobbies Congress to reform inequities. Sadly, reform comes too late to save Andy, but their efforts result in legislation preventing insurance companies from denying certain types of medical care.

A gift from Azevedo.......2001-03-22
When trajedy strikes, many people draw deeper into themselves. A few rare individuals will allow their emotion to be given as a gift to others in similar turmoil. In clear and blazingly honest language, Marilyn Azevedo shares her experiences as a way of making others feel less alone. Anyone who has suffered loss will benefit from this book, as well as anyone who has ever fought a valiant fight against that which can't be overpowered.
This is a beautifully written and worthwhile book, hearbreaking and uplifting in equal measures.
She did defend Andy!!.......2001-03-20
This well written thought provocating book is written beautifully from the heart. Not only is it a book about extreme unimaginable loss but is also a story of strength and love under undue circumstances. Marilyn Azevedo epitomizes a mothers unconditional love for her child and the length this mother went to keep him living among us. She articiulates succintly the battles patients, families, health care providers are raging with this unjust disease CANCER. Kudoos to her in her first literary masterpiece. My only regret is that Andy cannot share in this incredible achievement.

Hamster questions? Find Answers!.......2000-10-07
This book was VERY helpful. I have owned hamsters for years and have run into some very mysterious health problems with them. There aren't any vets in my area that are familiar with hamsters so it has been a learning process for me and my vet with different hamsters that I've taken in. This book has solved some of those medical questions. Not to metion the excellent section on breeds/colors of hamsters I found to be very helpful in classifying one of my hamsters. The format of the book is very easy and yet does not "talk down" to the reader. It is a must have book for the novice hamster keeper as well as those who think they are pros! I would definitely suggest you get this book if you love hamsters/gerbils/mice/rats/chincillas.

Includes diagrams, charts, and photographs of completed articles.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource Book!.......2006-11-03
This book is full of beautiful patterns with the great detailing that make lace knitting so enjoyable. Some of the book is not written out line by line, the patterns are adaptable and flexible. If you are looking for a great resource book with patterns that will get your mind working, this is the book for you. If you're wanting straight patterns to follow then you might want to pass this one up for now. Definitely a great addition to any lace knitters library.
Neat book, but a bit dated.......2006-03-24
Interesting book - focus is on doilies, and tablecloth type stuff. A bit much for a beginner at lace.
Exquisite knitted lace designs.......2005-07-01
This is a collection of exquisite knitted lace designs by Marianne Kinzel. The patterns are in very fine thread lace and mostly use knitting needle sizes around 2.00 mm or finer.
The sizes of the pieces range from doilies to tablecloths and bedspreads and every lace knitter should have this book and Book 2 in her collection.
Disappointment.......2004-01-03
This is NOT a good book for a beginner in Knitted lace.
I am an experienced knitter but have not knitted lace for years - I was once fairly expert, I earned pocket money while a medical student by knitting circular Shetland lace baby shawls to order. Even so, I found this book of little use in getting back into this area.
There are virtually no general instructions and the layout of the patterns is unnecessarily complicated
Try Jan Eaton's book instead
Treasure Found!.......2002-07-30
After almost giving up in despair, I found a copy of this book in our local library (pop or 3200) and found myself in lace knitting (or is it knitted lace?) heaven. Explanations are simple and concise, as are both diagrams and charts. I adapted one of the smaller patterns using overlocking thread and size 1.50mm needles and made a 4ft sq tablecloth as my son's wedding gift. It took approx 285 hours, but it was magnificent (even went through MY wedding ring and I'm 5ft! If you can knit, purl, make 1, then this is the book for you to enter the realm of fantasy.

Too many young women become convinced during their teenage years that they are failures who will never be beautiful, smart, or able to achieve professional success. But some girls manage to break free of the cycle of self-doubt--and 81 of them told Barbara Littman what their parents did to help make their success possible. The advice in Everyday Ways to Raise Smart, Strong, Confident Girls is mostly commonsensical (spend time with your daughter, take her ambitions and achievements seriously), but the simple activities it recommends can make a huge difference in an adolescent girl's life. There's some parental advice that is gender-specific: fathers can include their daughters in traditionally "male" activities like auto repair, while mothers, by accepting compliments from others, can show that it's OK for a woman to be proud of her accomplishments. Above all, Littman advises, be honest with young women and give them the psychological tools they need to mature into self-reliant women.
Book Description
A resource of fresh, practical things you can do every day to help your daughter stay active and involved during the precarious period of adolescence.
Customer Reviews:
Everyday Ways to Raise Smart, Strong, Confident Girls.......2001-07-29
This book gives you practical, down to earth ideas that you can easily incorporate into your everyday life. No time consuming charts to keep track of. What I really liked was that many quotes and ideas were from successful girls and what they felt made them successful.
A Must Read for All Who Care About Girls.......2000-03-27
Everyday Ways... is a must read for any parent, educator or mentor who is concerned with raising girls in the world today. Not only does Barbara Littman explain why girls are the way they are, she gives suggestions on how to raise girls to be confident in themselves and to be proud of who they are. The suggestions are do-able and simple. The book is truly a usable handbook that can be read in a short amount time with additional resources added in the back of the book. I am recommending this book to all my friends with daughters!
Book Description
Theodore Robinson (1854-96) was among a number of American painters who began to visit the small hamlet of Giverny on the Seine River in the late 1880s and early 1890s, where Claude Monet had settled in 1883. Robinson adopted the master's vibrant palette and fresh brush work. He also pursued Monet's rigorous practice of exploring subjects in series and, like his mentor, concentrated on recording aspects of the particular locale where he lived and worked. The book shows how Robinson absorbed and translated Monet's working method, style and subject matter, and demonstrates how Robinson conveyed Impressionism to America. His individual accomplishments and his artistic exchange with Monet are examined by juxtaposing the American's French works with a small number of carefully selected examples by Monet.
Customer Reviews:
In Monet's Light - A Unique Insight.......2005-09-08
Theodore Robinson moved to Evansville Wisconsin when he was 4, studied in Chicago, and visited both Evansville and Chicago for almost 40 years. As an auctioneer in Chicago, I had seen his works both for sale and at the Art Institute, and had read some of the existing bibliographical information.
While an artist's bibliography will always refer to the influences in the life, style and career, In Monet's Light is unique in the interlaced history of Robinson and Monet, as much a story about friends as about artists. Hundreds of artists tried to fall under Monet's acceptance, but Robinson became both a friend and found a mentor.
The quality of the images and their comparisons, the strength of the writing and the knowledge of those involved are of unusual strength. Historical photographs of the artists, landscapes and family members blend into a comparison of their works as Robinson developed his own style of Monet's technique and palette.
While specialists can produce definitive catalogs about the works of an artist, or write dealers can expound on the strength of a piece for sale, this book should have a special placing on a shelf for both institutions and people with an interest in this type of art.

A Book and a Life to Inspire.......2002-07-16
"Matt Talbot" is a short biography-inspirational life of an obscure Dublin workman who has become an inspiration for those who seek to rid themselves from addiction to alcohol. The fact that there is a story of Matt Talbot is a story in itself. Matt lived such an obscure life from 1856-1925 that no picture of him exists. It was only after his death that people began to collect memories of him and his sanctity began to be recognized. Talbot's problems began at the age of twelve when he tried to help his family by getting a job with a wine merchant. The sampling of the wine led to a sixteen year slavery to alcohol. In 1884, aware of what dirnk was doing to himself and his mother, Matt took the pledge to refrain from drink. He kept his pledge for the rest of his life. As he freed himself from alcoholism, Matt found, in Jesus and His Mother, someone in whose service he could gladly enslave himself. Most of the book contains memories related by those who knew Matt which display the degree of his dedication to religious devotion. In this book, Sister Susan Helen Wallace, FSP, has pemitted adults to enjoy her gift for religious biography which she had previously reserved for children
