Book Description
Volume 1 of the landmark Flora of New South Wales, published with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, was first published in 1990, and describes the naturally occurring and naturalized ferns, cycads, conifers, and some of the flowering plants of this state. This revised edition responds to wide-ranging revisions to taxonomy and the discovery or identification of new plant species--such as the "living fossil" Wollemi pine. It includes a 64-page insert that lists all the updates to the information within the book, including taxonomic changes, new species descriptions, new data about species, and changes to keys. The reference list, glossary, and index have all been revised.

Book Description
Venice has through the centuries attracted an extraordinary range of writers, drawn to it for inspiration, for consolation, or for the sheer pleasure of is unique setting. That so much of the city remains unchanged gives their words a powerful hold over our imaginations today. In this extravagant theater, writes Littlewood, we are as likely to chance upon the site of the murder of a Renaissance prince as the seduction of an eighteenth-century nun; the execution of a dissolute friar as the musings of a Victorian poet. All have their place in these pages, including the writings of Byron, Goethe, James, Proust, Lawrence, and Pound, among others.
Arranged in the form of seven detailed walks through Venice, this Literary Companion provides an illuminating guide to the streets, palaces, churches, and canals that make up this exquisite city. Venice's hidden corners-rife with feuds, rivalries, and romance-have never been brought so vividly to life.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful walking guide.............2001-06-04
As a veteran of the stumbling around with four books in my backpack trying to make sense of the block where I'm standing approach to travel (I don't do guided tours), I became a happier person the day I discovered someone had compiled the highpoints of Venice into one accessible walker's guide. A LITERARY COMPANION TO VENICE by Ian Littlewood is a fine guide.
I'm a literary enthusiast and over the years I've managed to find Louisa May Alcott's home in Concord, the stone ranch house Jack London built in Northern California, the supposed location of Robert Louis Stevenson's grass hut in Hawaii, the house in Rye England where Henry James retired, Anne Frank's attic in Amsterdam, the ancient and dour building in Geneva where Calvin framed his sermons, and Hemingway's house in Key West (still inhabited by his cats' cats' cats).
Many authors have passed through Venice over the years, and some like Henry James and George Sand left written records of their visits. In LITERARY COMPANION, Littlewood guides the reader on seven tours of Venice, the seventh tour being "North Venice" -- including the island where the fabled San Giorgio Maggiore and the Lagoon were painted in an impressionist sunset captured by Turner.
Littlewood provides a map for each of his tours, and at each step along the way he dicusses what you are seeing, who saw it before you, and what they had to say about it. For example, on the tour of the Piazza San Marco, the reader is directed to look "out across the Piazza" and "share the view with a fair number of pigeons.." He says Oscar Wilde's Dorian Grey liked the view.."Stretched on his sofa, he reads some lines of Gautier and thinks back to his stay in Venice" 'The sudden flashes of colour reminded him of the gleam of the opal-and-iris-throated birds that flutter around the tall honeycombed Campanile....'" Elizabeth Barrett Browning described the pigeons as "holy."
A LITERARY COMPANION is not exhaustive, although it contains refererences to the visits and habitation of many illustrious persons including Dante who stayed in Venice when he had been expelled from Florence. If you want an in-depth story of Venice and it's visitors over the past 1,000 years, I suggest you read John J. Norwich's book VENICE. However, Littlewood's COMPANION will be the book you take to Venice, it's compact, light, and extremely useful.
Great Introduction to Venice.......1999-11-30
A Literary Companion to Venice was the best introduction to Venice I could have read in preparation to my first visit there. The author shares stories of famous and unknown writers alike to weave a history of Venice by way of walking tours throughout the city. Great maps and illustrations accompany the seven wonderful walking tours detailed by the author. After reading this book I almost felt as if I'd been to this wonderful city and knew my way around.
Venetian walking tours for readers.......1997-05-19
The English author adds a literary dimension to seven Venetian walking tours by incorporating quotations from novelists, poets, essayists, reporters, and other observers. The resulting book is livelier than you might expect.

Takes you there.......2004-06-22
This series is often excellent and this one on Venice does not disappoint. The only chapter that I skimmed was the one on religious connections. Endlessly fascinating though and ideal to take along if you ever visit Venice. I also love the fact that the author does not get bogged down so much discussing the architecture and gives plenty of historical background. I also dug the fact he went off the islands to finish up talking about nearby cities like Padua, Verona and Vicenza.

Book Description
Like benefits and bonuses, stock options are fast becoming a `must have' for many businesses. Designing an Employee Stock Option Plan explains the concepts and requirements that must be part of any successful plan. Based on years of experience consulting with hundreds of companies, it was developed to help companies with the step-by-step process of creating and implementing an employee ownership strategy that works. This book should be used by any company that wants to energize its work force by giving them an ownership stake.
Customer Reviews:
Totally Worthless!.......2001-10-24
This book masquerades as a comprehensive guide to developing a stock option plan. In truth, it is a very basic overview of some of the topics surrounding stock option plans. When it attempts to walk through how one would actually go about creating a plan, it uses a hypothetical company and an executive named "Charlie". Sadly, whenever Charlie comes to difficult questions, no answer is given. For example, when discussing the question of valuing stock in a private company, the author's answer is to hire an outside consultant....Gee thanks! Beyond the single basic example give, no discussion of how or why certain decisions are to be made and rationalized. Another great example of this is in determining the number of shares to grant to employees and management. The answer given in the case study is that Charlie had "no process to determine these numbers"....wow, really insightful advice.....No plan at all, so when the executives ask you how you came up with the grant allocations, you can just tell them that you winged it, just like Charlie.
As you can tell, the authors couldnt even tackle simple issues like how many shares to grant, or the appropriate strike price,
and this is not even to mention REAL issues like compensating employees whose options are underwater. I guess Charlie didn't have this problem. I am totally embarassed to have bought this book, save your money and search the web for real-world advice.
Book Description
Dimitris N. Chorafas defines both auditing and internal control, and explains the value of internal control, why it must be audited, and how it can be most effectively achieved. He addresses top management's accountability for internal control and uses case studies to demonstrate the application of such systems, as well as the importance of sound analysis of the information gathered. Based on an extensive research project in the UK, US, and continental Europe, this book is an invaluable source of practical advice for implementing internal control systems and making existing systems more efficient.

Very informative but a little too generic.......2004-08-09
I found the book easy to read with loads of great photos of TT's. The first few chapters on the description, origin, living with a TT and Grooming a TT were great. The large section on TT's in the US was irrelevant to me since I am from Australia and I was dissappointed in the last few chapters because they were very generic and packed full with advertisments for a particular companies products.
Still I think it is a good read for anyone considering obtaining a TT for the first time.
Left wanting to hear more . . ........2002-02-20
The photography in the book is great. I also liked the history on the breed. I was, however, disappointed by the minimal information in the book about the breed's temperment, personality and the pluses and minuses of the breed. I was yearning for more information about this. The second half of the book is devoted to the typical puppy information that was very generic and has been written about in almost every dog book I've read. Anne, next time give us more!!
great photographics, generics.......2000-02-11
Its a very good book for new commers also for other breeds but not for breeders. Why are not included the opinions of other breeders? It hase also commercial announcements I don¨t like that.
Great photographs, as well as terrific descriptions........1999-07-25
I have read this book because I am looking for a Tibetan Terrier. I did lots of research, and read many books, but this one was the best. I found in all the other books that they were a little generic, and didn't give good advice, or was a little out dated. I found this book very simple to read, and I read it in one day. It gives terrific advice on the do's and don'ts of the Tibetan Terrier. The pictures are terrific, but I found the information even more fantastic.

Best Resource on the Breed.......2007-05-04
Although this book is very old, it's still the best resource on the breed and the one book I turn to to get me through each stage with my pup. For example, the book accurately predicted when and where I would find my pup's first matt and how to handle it. The book is dense with information, but if you are investing in a Tibetan Terrier, you will find no better information about the breed.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful and informative........2000-07-29
When my family was looking into getting the "perfect" dog we considered the tibetan terrier. This book helped us to determine whether it was the perfect dog or not. It did help, and convinced us to get the dog.
Whether you are looking at getting a dog, or just want something to read this book is great. It also has GREAT colored photographs.

Book Description
Top trend spotters in the craft and greeting card industry say that consumers are showing a real passion for texture. Crafters can easily satisfy that craving with this treasure trove of 40 elegant card and gift projects. It teaches plenty of texture-making techniques that utilize the magic of stamping in all its forms.
Curry is a master at creating dreamy, sophisticated and surprisingly beautiful texture effects. With enthusiasm, she teaches how to make richly textured backgrounds that look complex, but are surprisingly easy to re-create.
Step-by-step, readers will have fun combining basic stamping techniques with metallic paints, resist effects, alcohol inks, layers of acetate, watercolors, embellishments and much more!
Projects are conveniently grouped into sections that highlight the different ways texture can be created-by using visual texture, spot coloration, layered texture or adding embellishments.
Long-time rubber stampers and card makers will be inspired by all the new texturing techniques and clever variations demonstrated in this book.
:More than just cards, there are also lots of fresh ideas for turning ordinary boxes, tags, clocks and tiles into memorable gift items.
All this makes Texture Effects for Rubber Stamping an inspirational resource crafters will turn to again and again.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond basic rubber stamping techniques! .......2007-10-06
A beautiful book on using texture in paper crafts (not just in card making).
This book goes beyond being a "basic rubber stamping book",which is why I bought this book. I have been taking paper crafting classes for a few years and it's good to have a book like this one on hand because many of the techniques shown in this book are used in the "upper-level stamping classes" I've taken.
So often I have taken a paper craft class and then after a few years I've forgotten how to create a certain texture. Well, this book is great because it will often jog my memory of those upper-level classes that require skill and detail---BEYOND just inking a rubber stamp and slapping the design on paper.
In order to create a card or picture with color and texture, it's good to know the techniques shown by Ms. Curry in this book. Then, after practicing these "texturizing techniques", an artist can apply his or her own style to their art product.
For everyone who likes rubber stamps ..........2007-05-22
New approch for rubber stamping with great usages and provides every step for doing them. I love it.
A great idea and project book.......2007-05-15
This book has fun ideas shown in steps and in color! There are 40 projects with material lists and great texture effects that most anyone can accomplish. Very easy to follow the directions and some projects even have variations for additional ideas!
worth owning.......2007-02-19
This is not merely a picture book, nor is it a long-winded teaching book. The teaching is there, done via a series of projects which involve the reader in using the techniques. I love the clear way the content is provided. And I like it that Ms Curry gives her preferences, and reasons, for specific products. Altogether a great book.
This will replace all other stamping resource books!!.......2007-01-05
This is a must-have book for serious stamper's. Nancy's techniques are very detailed and creative. You'll be surprised how many supplies you have on hand and around the house when trying her techniques. I've read the book twice and I've tried all her techniques. Believe me you will not be able to put this book down. Definitely a stamper's bible!!
Customer Reviews:
Free Your Garden from Chemicals.......2007-07-13
If you want to get away from spreading chemicals around your yard, then this is the book for you. There are lots of color photos and it gives plant-by-plant specifics. Some ideas were new to me, like putting aluminum foil as mulch. I wanted to try the diatomaceous earth for slugs, but could only find large batches in the swimming pool supplies. Maybe it's available in smaller containers in garden centers, but I've not found it.

Book Description
Abigail Garner was five years old when her parents divorced and her dad came out as gay. Like the millions of children growing up in these families today, she often found herself in the middle of the political and moral debates surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) parenting.
Drawing on a decade of community organizing, and interviews with more than fifty grown sons and daughters of LGBT parents, Garner addresses such topics as coming out to children, facing homophobia at school, co-parenting with ex-partners, the impact of AIDS, and the children's own sexuality.
Both practical and deeply personal,
Families Like Mine provides an invaluable insider's perspective for LGBT parents, their families, and their allies.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for Virtually Everyone.......2007-07-14
I just finished reading your book, and it made me cry. (And I don't cry easily.) Your insights and perspective were profound, for me, and I'm sure for countless others who have read, and will read, your words.
I am a gay dad, and my son is currently three years old. It took my partner 15 years to convince me to adopt, and I did so reluctantly. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and was led to believe by all I heard and saw that my sexuality not only defined me, but limited me. I did not believe I was worthy, capable, allowed or justified to raise a child, or children, even after having mine placed in my arms the day he was born. I've come a long way as a parent in the past few years. But there remained lingering doubts about my ability to prepare my son for his unusual road ahead.
After reading your book, I'm relieved, hopeful, and mostly thankful to have such an eloquent reference tool. As a GLBT person, and now parent, I cannot satisfactorily tell you how meaningful your book is, or how fortunate I feel to have you as an advocate.
This really should be required reading for everyone in our society.
More than an invaluable resource.......2007-05-30
This book is a heartwarming panorama of the viewpoints and experiences of kids with gay parents. I am the adult daughter of gay fathers, and as I grew up I did not really have the luxury of knowing there were others like me. That I was a grown and married woman before I discovered this does not detract from the immense value of the lesson.
When I received this book, I read it from cover to cover in one day, relentlessly devouring the many pearls of wisdom and insight shared by those like me, these fabulously different queerspawn with that one silvery, similar skein woven throughout their lives. It was a wonder to hear these voices in their choir, flawlessly directed by Abigail Garner, finally allowed to sing and sing well of their lives without fear of reprisal, without shame. Too long had I lived without the knowledge contained within; each paragraph had me nearly shouting affirmations. It is far too easy to believe that you are alone, and the stories recorded here are a blessed reminder otherwise.
There is tremendous worth in the accessibility of these anecdotes, and they all reveal a vital part of the larger picture of our lives. It is often difficult to speak of these issues with friends or even family, but the freedom of these stories is infectious. I cannot begin to express how much that alone helped me in my own journey. These stories show most sweetly that we are normal, we are zany, we are troubled, we are compassionate, that we are the legacy of the parents who raised us, and we are much, much more than just the sum of these things.
For long and long, we have been invalidated, conveniently ignored or pushed aside for the sake of political and social agendas. This book purposes to change that. There is no agenda here, just the timeless, often hilarious, often tragic stories of the children of gay parents. Families Like Mine should be a staple in the literary diet of anyone whose life is even remotely tangential to queer culture. Moreover, I daresay that anyone who is involved in the great debate about children and LGBT parents should be required to read these pages and glean wisdom from the stories within, to see that we are really no different than any other children raised in a more traditional manner. But then, what could be more traditional than love and stability and a family that rallies with pride and care around its members?
Helped me understand my kids.......2007-01-16
I just came out Aug '06. The book taught me that kids have to "come out" about their parents (or may choose to hide it) and it's okay! Also, my multi-sexual eldest does not want to be categorized, and it's okay! Glad to have it on my shelf.
Excellent Teaching Resource.......2006-11-13
This is a well-written, well-researched book about what it feels like to grow up with LGB parents. It is an excellent teaching resource, and appropriate for use by high-school and college educators in a variety of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, human development, and family studies. I use this book in several classes, including a course on gender and families. Students love the book, and it always provokes questions and discussion on issues ranging from heterosexism, gender development, sexual orientation, and the experiences of children growing up with non-heterosexual parents. Highly recommended to educators and anyone looking to learn more about the lived experiences of kids of LGB parents.
More than you know!.......2006-06-09
I have read Abigail Garner's book, Families Like Mine, twice. Not only does this book cover the basics of parenting and being parented by gays and lesbians, it delves into the emotional quandry from all sides, fairly. This is not an old book about an old subject, but an excellent resource for anyone reaching out for understanding and guidence about the LGBT life. Considering the current political attempt to stop civil rights, this book will show anyone how much we need to understand and accept all people as "equal under the law." No one can truly walk in another's shoes, but Ms. Garner easily maps the way, page by page, to clear and educated thinking. Buy it, share it, pass it on!
Book Description
Beautiful four-color paintings and illustrations! Olana was the home of Frederic Church, a student of Thomas Cole and a major figure in the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Called by Church "the center of the world," Olana's Perrsian-style house and romantically-designed grounds are a "perfect Eden of picturesque beauty."
