You won't find the latest Casa Blanca club or Ouerzazate-Marrakech bus schedules in it, but you can't beat the Blue Guide for concise historical background and comment on art and architechture. In places where this really matters, like Volubilis, Moulay Idriss, and Fes, it surpasses more mainstream guide books. Pen-and-ink sketches replace glossy photos, giving the book the feel of a war correspondent's diary (or the Wall Street Journal?). ...

No American president has been so enthusiastic in his appreciation of the wilderness and in his attention to the preservation of natural treasures as Theodore Roosevelt. This book chronicles the adventurer's lifelong quests and expeditions, which saw him traversing some of North America, South America, and Africa's most difficult terrain.

    H. Paul Jeffers' Roosevelt The Explorer: Teddy Roosevelt's Amazing Adventures As A Naturalist, Conservationist, And Explorer is an outstanding biography of American President Teddy Roosevelt and one which focuses specifically upon his work in the areas of conservation and exploring. Dwelling on Roosevelt's enthusiastic appreciation of nature, and his struggles as President against tough opposition in order to create a system of national parks and to protect America's forests and wetlands from the depredation of development, Roosevelt The Explorer is a thoughtful, environment-oriented, biographical study of a truly great American leader, family man, outdoor enthusiast, and human being.

"Journey From Madness To Serenity" is a testament to having faith in God. This true story tells how the author's faith and love for her son compelled her to fight manic-depression.

This book is truly a success story. Akilah takes you inside her life, mind, and heart. I feel it an honor to have had the opportunity for Akilah to share her personal story with me. Akilah not only addresses the issues of being afflicted with Manic-depressive illness but shares her intimate thoughts of self-doubt and the feelings of inadequacy in addition to how men attempted to manipulate her in to believing they were some extraordinary men and the only one willing to take on the burden of this illness with her. My heart went out to her when I read the part regarding the lack of support she recieved from the person she probably needed it most from, her mother. How could a mother make a child feel less of a person? How could a mother justify those actions? How could a mother contribute to these feelings of inadequacy supporting a man who is too weak and pathetic to assist a woman in becoming stronger because her weak moments are his only security, wishing them never to leave for fear that she may realize she could do a lot better than him in the selection of a partner. That isn't love. There is no justification for it. I salute you Akilah. I am also afflicted with manic-depressive illness and refuse to allow anyone to use this illness to mask their own inadequacies. The love of God be with, comfort, guide, and protect you always.

This book is definitely not one of those "Woo Me" stories. Instead it's an inspirational story of one persons experience with manic-depression. The author brings not only her remarkable compassion and but also a bit of research to bear on this devastating dilemma.

I read the book in one day. I shared with a friend, and he read it in one day. Therefore, I would say this is not one of those books full of unnecessary detail, yet the author holds you with an interesting story. Akilah, shares with you her life with manic depression, with clear and precise events that takes you into her life. It doesn't get too technical in regards to mental illnesses or depression. If you have background knowledge on depression and mental illnesses, you could probably relate more. However, if you haven't, it explains enough to move you along. The author gives you enough background to understand how manic depression alters one's life.

I encourage persons living with depression, to share this book with close friends to help them gain a better understanding of how depression can alter your lifestyle. Reading Akilah's story will help close friends understand 'What Not To Say'to a person with manic depression, and how to recognize the signs. Many peoples first reaction dealing with loved-one with depression is to attribute all their actions to being depressed. Ultimately, those loved ones make the mistake of assuming they amplify all feelings and emotions.

Much more than the dull, ubiquitous "let me tell you my story" books weighing down shelves at the bookstores, Akilah takes you on a life journey with her through some personal, emotional and mind blowing experiences. Her detailed accounting of events leaves you never wanting to put the book down to see how she triumphed or fell prey. She has demonstrated her ability to bring you into the life of a diagnosed Manic Depressant and help you to understand and read the symptoms leading up to such a diagnoses. I truly enjoyed the education and research she provides to help someone else who maybe having some of the same challenges. She should be praised for her accomplishments in spite of her circumstances. Most of us couldn't have done it in our right minds!

        Book Description

It’s quiltmaking made as simple as paint-by-numbers! With a new method called foundation piecing, you just follow a numerical sequence to stitch fabric onto a foundation. Even the smallest pieces meet precisely, quickly, and accurately. With 365 projects, you could make one every day of the year. They’re organized month-by-month, so you could make a patriotic quilt with the July blocks; a Thanksgiving quilt in November; a Christmas quilt with the December blocks; or pretty floral quilts with each month’s flowers. (There are also some whimsical designs such as the yellow submarine that marks the day the Beatles came to America.) Photos of quilts made with blocks for each month accompany the complete instructions for the entire foundation piecing process.

This is the second foundation quilt block book that I have bought written by Linda Causse and I can't wait to get started on my next quilt project using one of her latest designs. Since I am a fairly new quilter, I find her books very explicit with instructions and helpful tips, especially for a quilter doing foundation blocks for the first time.

I love this book and was disappointed to see that it is out of print. I logged on with the intention of buying a copy as a gift for a friend who has discovered gardening - and to get an additional copy to take me to 2006.

I love the layout that allows for maximum flexibility and the thoughtful prompting of categories.

This makes a great personal garden diary and a wonderful gift idea.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 5 year diary of your garden.......1999-12-17

A wonderful journal to track the progress of your garden. Useful for long-term gardeners and those who are just starting to learn. The pages are layed out so 5 years show on a 2page spread, sections for week 1 of january, week 2 of january, etc. Categories you can fill in include weather, flowers(what was blooming when), shrubs & trees, lawns, vegetables & fruit (when did you plant tomatoes last year? ), greenhouse, and a section for notes. There is room for putting down basic information - this isn't a book for writing down detailed information. It is a reference to use morelike a calendar (when was the first hard freeze in previous years? ) A great book. I haven't been able to find another one like it.

5 out of 5 stars A simple but elegant garden diary for five years.......1999-03-16

Having previously used The Royal Horticultural Society Gardener's Five Year Record Book (now out-of-print), we were delighted with this journal. It is nicely bound with a ribbon to tie it closed. It is divided by weeks, so that one can see "August, Week 1" on 2 facing pages. Prompts for Weather, Bulbs and Flowers, Shrubs and Trees, etc. are listed down the left side. Five columns (for each year) with blank lined spaces are spread across 2 pages. Having used this type of journal before, we have enjoyed seeing what we experienced in weather and blooming in previous years. It is also helpful to remember what was planted. Nice photography and seasonal illustrations throughout. Appendices includes places for yearly summaries, lists of suppliers, notes, etc. A clever envelope holding gridded paper for planting plans is glued inside the back cover. Everyone to whom we've shown this book has exclaimed over it.

              Book Description

There are no bruises to yellow and heal, no gaping wound to point to. But, in spite of their invisibility, emotional wounds are a very damaging form of abuse. Whether caused by words, actions, or even indifference, emotional abuse is very common-yet often overlooked. In this helpful guide, Christian therapist Gregory Jantz examines why emotional abuse is so common and damaging. He reveals how those who have been abused by a spouse, parent, employer, or minister can overcome the past and rebuild their self-image. This new expanded edition of Healing the Scars of Emotional Abuse now includes: strategies for dealing with the verbal abuser; self-check quizzes with each chapter; keys to rebuilding relationships; letters from survivors of emotional abuse; new information on spiritual abuse; a biblical plan for healing.

              5 out of 5 stars Emotional Abuse.......2007-04-07

The topic of emotional abuse is one that must be addressed in our time. Physical abuse is highlighted quite often but not emotional abuse. Everyone should read this book. It will change the course of many lives.

              5 out of 5 stars Realization.......2006-01-01

This has been such a great book for me. It was such a big eye opener for me. I knew that my life as a child left me scarred, but without any physical signs of abuse I felt that maybe it was all in my head. It was hard to read and realize that the emotional abuse I have suffered still has a great impact on me today. I loved how they spoke of God and seeking Him in your road to recovery. This book is so well written and it's easy to understand. It has identified the different types of abuse and I can see the type I myself have suffered from. Even if you have never suffered emotional abuse I would still recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Healing the Scars of Emotional Abuse.......2003-05-21

This book is an excellent resource to help a person recognize the difference between criticism and emotional & verbal abuse. Criticism is normally given IN LOVE, there is an enormous difference between criticism & abuse. This book will also help anyone who was previously in an abusive relationship to be able to recognize some of the common traits all emotional abusers and potential emotional abusers exhibit and steer clear of another abusive relationship. I even found instances in my own life where I was the one doing the controlling through emotional abuse & have been able to discontinue that behavior through self examination & prayer. Excellent book!

I've been reading a lot of self-help books, but have rarely been so moved to recommend them to others. I found this one uncommonly wise, kind, and helpful and sensible--you come away
with a grounded, helped feeling...hopeful, too. I'm not crazy about the word "empowering," but this book is empowering, I think. If you're looking for help in this area, this book is worth reading. (I know Bill Blass used to say in those magazine perfume ads that he didn't like people (women) who thought they could be helped by self-help books--remember?--but I don't care! This is a truly good one!) If you are in pain and you suspect past emotional abuse might be a factor contributing to it, please check this book out. You might even be moved to pass it on to friends--I am already plotting to purchase additional copies!

5 out of 5 stars Souls are Unisex.......2002-04-06

Laying open oneself to another is an act of love unlike no other because it is an intentional removal of the protective layers through which self insulation protects us from the world and the misinterpretation which can result in pain, or worse, hardening of the heart. Unlike hardening of the arteries, hardening of the heart affects many more people than just the person to whom it happens. Hard boiled hearts do not permit entry, obviously, without gently and delicately trying to crack through the outer shells to reach the tasty treasures within that can be had only with this special, nurturing mission - a revival of the heartbeat necessary to pulse within the rhythm of other harmonious lives through which synchronous melodies are obtained rather than the discords of chaos, all too common. Symphonics or the ability to hear the music that inspires falls mainly to those who are not tone deaf and are never gender related. While there may be fewer men than not because of the nature of the environment in which they live, it is through the rare artist of empathy that the ungodly sounds of the earth are cultivated, even in a godly world where god may have been left behind. While we tend to think that, for example, it is children, or lovers who are left behind, it is actually God who has been left behind in a world where the respect of God has been sorely challenged, or ignored. In these times of Godly distrust where men are so eager to rely upon themselves, possibly to the exlusion of God, everyone suffers because it is a derivative illness whose ripples are far reaching. The obligation to attend to our souls to prevent this outcome is imperatitve and critical to preserve or revive the souls so damaged, so in pain, and so hardened. The ability to realize that what stalker's remove, other stalker's can return is an important facet of this book where being open to either is the main business of life.

              Book Description

Audrey Munson was once called the "The most perfect, most versatile, most famous of American models, whose face and figure have inspired thousands of modern masterpieces of sculpture and painting." It was not an exaggeration. Audrey's career is the classic tale of meteoric rise and tragic downfall—from "Queen of the Artists' Studios" to fragile psychiatric patient.
Her best known clients included Daniel Chester French and Karl Bitter for whom she provided inspiration beyond her physical grace. The consummate professional, she modeled for dozens of civic monuments and was called "America's Venus." At one time, thirty pieces of art based on her poses were housed at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to many public edifices throughout the U.S., she has adorned the estates of John D. Rockefeller and George Vanderbilt, J. P. Morgan's yacht, and U.S. Mint coins.
At the peak of her career she was selected as the primary model for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition (P.P.I.E.) in San Francisco, eventually appearing in 24,000 feet of mural decorations, scores of groups of statuary, and the Exposition's exquisite symbolic figurine which graced the cover of Sunset magazine. Audrey Munson's life as a fine art model was the subject of four controversial silent films in which she starred—mostly nude. After a media spectacle linking her with a murder case her career faltered and ultimately doomed her to a life of reclusion in a psychiatric facility at the age of 39. She lived there largely unacknowledged by her family until the astonishing age of 105. This then is her story.

              4 out of 5 stars Dignity Restored.......2000-01-03

This is an illustrated account of the tragic life of Audrey Munson (1891-1996) who modeled for leading American sculptors (e.g., Daniel Chester French, A. Sterling Calder, and Sherry Fry) in the so-called "guilded age" of art. She posed for both the head and tail of the 1916 U.S. dime (the Mercury dime); as well as for statues that stand at the front of the New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, on the fountain outside of the Plaza Hotel, in the pediments at the entrance to the Frick Collection, and (as the figure of Evangeline) at the Longfellow Memorial in Massachusetts. When the Beaux Arts tradition in sculpture was quashed by the rise of Modernism, she tried to survive by performing in films about artists' models, resulting in a great scandal because she appeared on the screen totally nude. In 1919, when rumored to have been involved in the murder of her landlord's wife (she wasn't), she collapsed emotionally (described back then as "mental blight"), was ostracized as "Crazy Audrey," and, after a quest for a husband that failed, attempted suicide. At age 39, she was committed to an asylum, where she remained in obscurity until her recent death at age 105. This book is a belated but sincere attempt to restore her dignity. (Copyright © by Roy R.
