Can't stop crazy quilting now.......2006-10-19

I had already begun crazy quilting by machine before purchasing this book, but frustrated in how to expand on just a plain zigzag machine. I ordered this book and have been closely pouring over it ever since. The encyclopedia of machine stitches was not as full as I anticipated but nevertheless informative. Just carefully looking over the beautifully illustrated projects provides inspiration for many projects to come. Ms. Michler also provides many useful patterns. This book confirmed I was headed in the right direction with machine crazy quilting, and I discovered ways to fulfill some of my own ideas and to do things I thought not possible on a machine. It turned out to be the perfect book for me.

This book shows several different techniques on making crazy quilts. Lots of coloured photos and the instructions are easy to follow. I would have liked the author to have gone into more detail regarding sandwiching and quilting techniques for crazy quilts. Still, this book is worth adding to your collection.

Having lost my confidence with the needle following a long spell of illness, this book, Crazy Patchwork, a Christmas gift from my husband, first gave me great pleasure just looking through it, and secondly inspiration to pick up my needle again.

Beautiful pictures illustrate the non-patronising instructions to create glorious new items from recycled bits and pieces, many of which most needlewomen will find in their possession.
Some of the projects are easier than others but even the ones which are a little more difficult have simplied options.
The projects are varied, modern without being harsh, and pretty without being old-fashioned.

Have you ever noticed in "how-to" books that there are often irritating ommissions, as if the writer wanted you to how clever they are but are not prepared to share all of their knowledge with you. THIS BOOK IS NOT ONE OF THEM!
Janet Haigh, who is obviiously an expert needlewoman, tells it all.

This book is a nice book for those who like Hippeastrums. I ordered it hoping to get a photo catalog of all hybrids (as they were listed in the index). However, for each of hybrids there is only text information (though rather full), but no photos. There are also some nice photos in the colourful middle of the book with some rare varieties and hybrids.

In Depth coverage of Amaryllis species.......2006-05-04

I read this book through in one sitting. As a new Amaryllis enthusiast, I needed help in identifying a mislabeled bulb that I had received in the mail. The excellent pictures and detailed discriptions, in this book, answered my identification question, and many more questions that I had about the proper culture of this beautiful plant. The book identifies many of the more unusal cultivars which are now becoming available through mail order catalogs. The author's enthusiasm and love of Amaryllis is evident on every page.

More (and less) than you want to know.......2006-02-21

Timber Press's horticultural books always present beautifully: glossy paper, colored plates, and densely-packed text that makes you think you'll learn all you ever wanted to know about a particular plant family. Many appear to be written by British horticulturalists associated with some Royal garden or another. And, many appear to be written FOR other British horticulturalists of some Royal garden or another. I was excited to get this book, because I love hippeastrums; but I found many pages that I needn't spend much time on, such as long descriptions of research and researchers in countries around the world. As for learning more about how to grow them, you'll glean a few ideas, but unless you have a tissue culture laboratory, a climate-controlled greenhouse, and access to all the soil and chemical products that are available in the UK (or only given by their UK name or description), you'll probably not do much with the rest of the cultural information.

I've looked over a number of the Timber Press plant guides, and this one seems to be typical of their presentation. The pictures are a joy to look at. But these books are often heavy on varieties and products that the average person will never come across, even in the age of the internet. I'm not saying they'll not be valuable to someone; only that I find they don't live up to their promise to me, and I suspect to most average plant lovers.

Wonderful biographical writing.......2004-01-02

This small book covers the life of a man whose influence will be felt for many years to come. Impacting Ireland, Australia, and beyond, Hammond was truly a Christian hero. Marvellously written, this well-researched biography includes several b/w photographs; appendices on Hammond's writings, quotes of his 'wit and wisdom', and a select bibliography; and extensive notes. I strongly recommend this inspiring book to all who desire to pour themselves out in the service of God -- read it and see what He can do with just one faithful servant!
